Jean Paul Gaultier VARIOUS ARTISTS Jean Paul Gaultier is the quintessential « enfant terrible » of French fashion and one of the industry’s most flamboyant characters. His bold and often irreverent styles - think Madonna's cone bra from the 1990 Blonde Ambition World Tour have earned him the status of fashion icon. This compilation has been produced to coincide with the Paris exhibition devoted to the celebrated French couturier, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk. The album celebrates the “music and fashion muses” of this provocative designer. His Parisian charm and tongue-in-cheek witticisms are reflected in this selection of songs he personally handpicked, from artists and muses including Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Catherine Deneuve, Boy George and Grace Jones - a selection which is as full of fantasy as it is of classical poise.

The Meridian Suite ANTONIO SANCHEZ & MIGRATION With motifs, phrases and concepts that recur and transform throughout the piece's five movements, The Meridian Suite is a thrillingly adventurous achievement that absorbs influences from modern rock, free form improvisation and electronic music into a forward-looking jazz masterwork. The album marks the high point thus far for a career that continues to climb and serves to reinforce Antonio Sanchez's place at the forefront of modern jazz - breaking boundaries as a virtuoso drummer, a visionary composer, and a truly inspired musical thinker. The suite, the cinematic scope of which was heavily influenced by Sanchez's experience composing the score to the Birdman movie, takes full advantage of the versatility and wide-ranging palette of Migration, the quartet that Sanchez has led since 2011. Tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake doubles on Electric Wind Instrument (EWI), John Escreet on piano and Fender Rhodes, and Matt Brewer on both acoustic and electric bass. Sanchez also layered keyboard atmospherics onto the album in post-production along with a wide array of guitars from Adam Rogers, while singer Thana Alexa contributes soaring lyrics to the second movement, "Imaginary Lines," and coloristic wordless vocals elsewhere.

The ACT Man - Siggi Loch 75 A Life in the Spirit of Jazz

VARIOUS ARTISTS Producer and ACT label boss Siggi Loch turns 75 on August 6th this year and to celebrate his birthday ACT are releasing a collection of music that Siggi had the pleasure of producing over the last 50-plus years, his own personal ‘Best of...’. “Life in the Spirit of Jazz - Siggi Loch 75” represents a fascinating cross-section from the glittering career and from the passionate life of a man who has achieved legendary status in music. Right at the start of his career, he had the dream of running his own jazz label, and he has now fulfilled that dream. ACT has been voted label of the year four times in a row at the German ECHO awards, and in 2015 alone, its artists and releases garnered eight ECHOs: the label has achieved international renown. However this CD collection is a snapshot of where things are, a provisional taking of stock to mark and to celebrate Siggi Loch's 75th birthday. And what does the future hold for him? Loch answers that question unambiguously, and with Dizzy Gillespie's immortal formula: “I will bop until I drop!”

Siggi Loch has a breadth of experience in the music sector that very few can match. From the 1960s onwards, those formative days for the modern record industry, his career path rapidly became a giddying ascent. From a position as sales rep for EMI, to label manager at Philips, on to head of Warner Europe, Loch owed this meteoric rise to his inexhaustible enthusiasm, combined with an ability to spot the talent and to predict the trends in pop music. He had been at Warner eighteen years when his boss and mentor Nesuhi Ertegün, the legendary Atlantic Jazz producer, stood down as WEA chairman. Loch, who now knew the music business inside-out, took his cue to abandon a lucrative managerial position, and finally to turn the dream of his youth into a reality. In 1992 ACT was born as a jazz label. Contents: CD 1 : The Beginning CD 2 : Blues & Rock CD 3 : Crossing Borders CD 4 : Visions of Jazz CD 5 : Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic Full track listing available on request

Do What You Like GINGER BAKER'S AIR FORCE FEATURING THE FAMOUS DRUM BATTLE WITH ELVIN JONES! After Ginger Baker had re-written music history with Cream and broken up Blind Faith after just one LP and a U.S. stadium tour, he had the financial backing to set off on his first solo project, Ginger Baker's Air Force, formed in 1970. It was Ginger's idea to mix African roots with popular western music. It was to become the first 'World Music' band in music history, long before the category even existed. The last tour began on January 29, 1971 in Leeds and the next day Air Force played the Lyceum in London, where the famous meeting between the two great drummers Elvin Jones & Ginger Baker took place. After Air Force had played for a half hour, Elvin came on stage and played 'Aiko Biaye' with Baker. 'Do What You Like' followed, during which Ginger and Elvin delivered a drum battle of the highest quality. After the concert Elvin commented: "Those were great moments. Moments that I will remember my entire life." On February 20, 1971, Air Force gave its last concert in England. Ginger Baker's Air Force had made musical history after just 14 months.

Everything is Cool GIACOMO GATES Gates approaches jazz singing with a showman's poise and an aficionado's zeal. With his deep, cognac baritone and his vintage-hipster lexicon, his phrasing and his bearing, he upholds a distinctly masculine ideal of deceptively easy nonchalance. Gates is known as the modern day heir to Eddie Jefferson, the godfather of vocalese. Here he uses the style sparingly, but to great advantage, never showboating by using the challenging technique. Backed by his go-to pianist, di Martino and guitarist Lombardozzi leading the rhythm section and Grant Stewart out in front on sax, Giacomo sings and swings his way through a dozen tunes - some familiar favourites, some rarely heard gems. He may be soft and subtle or he may be hip and humorous but one thing Giocomo Gates is not, is predictable.

Akhenaten Suite - Live at Vision Festival XII ROY CAMPBELL ENSEMBLE Roy Campbell was a jazz trumpeter and composer of the first order, one who encompassed the tradition even as he pushed the music forward. He was a founding member of the luminous collective Other Dimensions In Music, as well as Marc Ribot’s Spiritual Unity project, and produced numerous acclaimed releases as a leader. This album is one of his crowning achievements and, sadly, was to be his final album as leader. Akhenaten Suite was specially commissioned for and recorded live at the 2007 Vision Festival in New York. Released in 2008, it's original pressing quickly sold out. This re-press of 500 copies, with revamped artwork, finally brings this stellar release back in print. “A joyous, expansive collective of compositions that embraces stretching ambitions within an inviting language. Great band too: veteran bassist Hilliard Greene is an unsung hero, and the Bang-Carrott vibraphone and violin frontline encourages a lightness of touch that’s wholly refreshing." (Jazz Review)

Metamophosis Classical Meets Jazz and Modern

VARIOUS ARTISTS Winter & Winter introduces thematically in the „Jubilee Edition“ artistical principals and highlights of the work cycles that have been realised in the first 30 years bewteen 1985 and 2015. A fundamental part of the all together over 300 productions that Mariko Takahashi and Stefan Winter have built up are the classical adaptations.

Label: Winter&Winter File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: 910224-2 Barcode: 025091022427 Price: MID PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack

The album »Metamorphosis« centers around the adaptations of composers and interpreters such as Uri Caine, the ensemble Kneebody, Reinbert de Leeuw and the Schönberg Ensemble, Barbara Sukowa and her band The X-Patsys, Fumio Yasuda and Stefan Zeniuk with the brass group Gato Loco and moves them in the focus. Their works stand for competence, creativity and musical innovation. The arrangements and performances represent an attempt to re-read historical musical texts from a todays perspective, by transferring them to new – sometimes formerly unknown – instruments and by filtering out existing elements, which are hidden. The re-interpretations open up unimagined perspectives to experience and enjoy the historic masters. Adaptations belong to the craft of composers and musicians since the early days of music. Bach deals with Vivaldi's music, Schumann with Bach's compositions, Mahler with Beethoven. Experiencing old masterpieces in an adaptation by contemporary artists has until today not lost any of its appeal. Track listing: 1. Othello's Victory [Adaptation by Uri Caine after Otello by Giuseppe Verdi] 2. Wehmut [Arrangement by Reinbert de Leeuw after Robert Schumann, Lyrics: Joseph von Eichendorff] 3. Debi SANGOMA EVERETT TRIO A musicologist with a tremendous curiosity, American drummer Sangoma Everett has been established in France since 1979 and has always been a huge traveller, collecting and recording local tunes everywhere. It’s a beautiful story of triangular jazz, a meeting full of harmony and humanity, in which double bassist Christophe Lincontang forms an elegant rhythm team alongside Everett (a colleague of Dizzy Gillepsie, Clifford Jordan, Kirk Lightsey, Steve Grossman, and many others…), joining talents and imagination to Bastien Brison’s piano style, full of emotion. Brison contributes the majority of the compositions here. Where Are Our Friends opens the album on a wonderful and silky melody, almost pop. Debi and Frida soak in soft melancholy. The title track Debi is a tribute to the Indian sarod player Debi Prasad Gosh. Brooklyn concludes the album under a beautiful sun in New York. The Sangoma Everett Trio present a cohesive and striking work of breath-taking imagination.

With... JOHN RUSSELL John was off the scene for several months prior to this gig (Dec, 2014), mainly in hospital under observation for a serious heart condition, but he was determined to play this, his 60th birthday concert, at Cafe Oto in London. He has since had a heart bypass operation and is now well on the road to recovery. "On approaching my sixtieth birthday and how to celebrate the fact I had made it that far I realised that I have been deeply fortunate in having had the opportunity to play with some great musicians over the years. It is this thing of ‘with’ playing together in a spirit of shared generosity that is at the heart of free improvisation for me. It seemed natural then that the best way to celebrate would be to play a concert with some of these musicians." John Russell

Chapter One ISKRA 1903 Paul RUTHERFORD / Derek BAILEY / Barry GUY A reissue of EM4301, featuring the first Iskra line-up recorded in London and at various locations in Germany, between 1970 and 1972. "Rutherford was the guiding spirit behind Iskra 1903 and even if he had not recorded another note, this fact alone would place him at the very heart of British improvisation since 1970. The early performances documented on CHAPTER ONE are typical of the group's highly concentrated output. More intensely focused and, residually at least, more jazz-inflected than either AMM or the more radical excursions of the Spontaneous Music Ensemble, Iskra 1903 represent a wonderfully challenging auditory experience. So densely interwoven are the lines and so convincingly vocalised is Rutherford's tone that one almost feels one is listening to a passionate discourse." Uhrlicht - Primal Light 2LP URI CAINE 180g VINYL ANALOGUE-MASTERED DOUBLE LP In early 1995, the New York-based jazz pianist, composer and arranger Uri Caine was approached by German music producer Stefan Winter about adapting the music of Gustav Mahler for a documentary film Winter's brother Franz directed in 1993/94. Caine was also asked to debut this music during a live performance accompanying a screening of Winter's film at the Knitting Factory with a group consisting of leading members of New York's creative music community. Caine accepted this commission immediately and enthusiastically and for an entire year intensively immersed himself in Mahler's life and music. He pored over scores, searching for themes and fragments he could assemble into new compositions drawing on nearly every style of contemporary music of our age jazz, Latin, fusion, funk, free jazz and New Music. The premiere performance of Caine's work was a critical and popular success and in May 1996, he entered the studio to record Gustav Mahler - Primal Light, a unique and original tribute to one of the most significant composers.

Mongolia - Throat Singing VARIOUS ARTISTS The best-known aspect of Mongolian music is the famous koomei or throat-singing, in which one or more pitches sound simultaneously over a fundamental tone, resulting in harmoniously rich melodies. Imitation of the sounds of nature (animals, wind, water) plays an important part in this pastoral music of nomadic people. Sung by populations that have seen little outside influence, it is one of the world's oldest, purest forms of music.

For Those Who Are, Still WILLIAM PARKER For Those Who Are, Still is a 3CD box set of new and previously unissued long-form works from world-renowned composer-bassist William Parker. This set is comprised of four distinctly compelling long-form works – Parker’s first composition written for symphony orchestra performance; a commissioned piece for a standing new music ensemble; a “chamber-jazz” song series for voice / soprano sax / piano / bass; a composition created specifically for a particularly diverse Parker assemblage in Universal Tonality mode. The four works are linked by a focus on and greater adherence to William Parker’s written compositions; the depth and breadth of the resultant performances is astonishing.

Le Bébé de Brigitte (Lost in Translation) DARIUS JONES QUARTET Le bébé de Brigitte (Lost in Translation) is alto saxophonist-composer Darius Jones’ new album work, and the 5th installment in his expansive Man’ish Boy epic. The highly acclaimed series began in 2009 with Man’ish Boy (A Raw & Beautiful Thing), and shall eventually comprise nine albums. This release arrives soundly at the mid-way point with aplomb, and is performed by the Darius Jones Quartet featuring vocalist Emilie Lesbros. As ever with Jones’ work, the compositional palette ranges widely here. From the new blues swagger of “Universal Translator” to the equally universal sense of great loss evoked in “I Can’t Keep From Weeping” (as aching a ballad as Jones has yet written/recorded); from the infectiously swinging & (finally) unhinged cabaret dialogue that is “Chanteuse in Blue” to perhaps the deepest essence of the album (and platforms of intent) which are “Two Worlds, One Soul” & “Beneath The Skin”, a pair of extended works which evolve with the utmost in careful consideration to timing and gesture by all involved. French singer-lyricist Emilie Lesbros’ own composition, “Quand Vient la Nuit” (arr. by Darius Jones) closes and lyrically encapsulates the album: espousing no fear, in life, in art.

Life in Real Time LASZLO GARDONY Over the past quarter century pianist/composer Laszlo Gardony has gained widespread acclaim for a series of inspired albums documenting his trio and his riveting solo recitals. In a welcome addition to his treasure-laden discography, he delivers his first sextet session, Life In Real Time, a thrilling live album recorded at the Berklee Performance Center at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Rather than an all-star blowing session, Life In Real Time introduces an ensemble that breathes, phrases and reacts as one, reveling in the knifepoint balance between structure and freedom afforded by Gardony’s arrangements and bandleading sensibility. In many circles Gardony is best known as a master of the trio format, but he’s equally impressive alone at the piano, the format he first explored on 1993’s acclaimed Changed Standards and returned to again on his last album, 2013’s Clarity (both on Sunnyside). After the probing introspection of a solo recital it seems fitting that Gardony returns with a bandstand bash that captures some of jazz’s most eloquent raconteurs inspiring each other to ever more vivid tales.
