Apikorsim - Heretics THE KLEZMATICS From the beginning of their career The Klezmatics have demonstrated that Yiddish music does not have to be nostalgic, schmaltzy, or kitsch; that Jewish klezmer is Eastern European party music and a vital part of the spectrum of world dance music and culture. Now, approaching their fourth decade together, the Klezmatics continue their redefinition of Yiddish music with their new recording, Apikorsim. The Klezmatics erupted out of New York City’s East Village in 1986 and revitalized klezmer for the new century with music that is steeped in Eastern European Jewish tradition and spirituality, while incorporating contemporary themes such as human rights and anti-fundamentalism with eclectic musical influences including Arab, African, Latin and Balkan rhythms, jazz and punk. Elemental Music proudly presents a reissue of a long out of print title from the extensive James Brown discography: his 1979 album The Original Disco Man. This masterpiece set the pace to a more Disco oriented sound in Mr. Brown’s career, and marked the first time the Godfather of Soul entirely delegated the production of one of their albums in favor of an external producer. At the request of Polydor, the chosen man for the job was Brad Shapiro, a deep soul producer who worked out of Muscle Shoals, utilizing the famous studio and band. Before working with James Brown, he had produced albums by such greats as Wilson Pickett, Betty Wright and Millie Jackson. Shapiro wrote the bulk of the music for the LP with Muscle Shoals keyboardist Randy McCormick, and cut the background music at the famous Alabama studio. James recorded his vocals later in Nashville. The resulting album was one of Brown’s strongest in a long time, featuring such luminaries as bassist David Hood, and drummer Roger Hawkins. Track listing: 1. Nature Planned It THE FOUR TOPS Elemental Music, together with Universal Music Group, present the best selection of Jazz, R&B, Soul and Funk out of print titles from the vaults of classic labels. This Elemental Music reissue presents a reissue of Nature Planned It, long unavailable on CD, by one of Motown’s most consistent hitmakers of all the times: The Four Tops. With a lineup lasting for over four decades, The Four Tops were probably the most stable vocal group to emerge from the label in the ‘60s, charting with scores of upbeat love songs featuring Levi Stubbs’ rough hewn lead vocals. Nature Planned It was The Four Tops’ last Motown album before the group departed for ABC/Dunhill Records. They would later return to the fold in ‘83.

Released in 1972, this fantastic album contains some of their strongest material. Frank Wilson was again the appointed producer, and the production is top notch, using many of Motown’s highly talented musicians. Some of the recordings truly stand out. The title song, “It’s the Way Nature Planned It”, is one of the group’s best, with an engaging lead and Abdul Fakir, Lawrence Payton and Renaldo Benson’s smooth harmonies. The medley “Hey Man/We Got to Get You a Woman” garnered quite a few spins when released, with a happy optimistic feel that went over well. “I’ll Never Change” and “I Can’t Quit Your Love” are both sung by Stubbs near the top of his register, adding even more fuel to the already dynamic arrangement. Their sensitive interpretations of the title cut and “Happy (Is a Bumpy Road)” are just two of the standout numbers. The soul component is super-high, with tight group instrumentation that reminds us of the best Philly backing combos of the same time. Dennis Coffey and Wah Wah Ragin are on guitars, Jack Ashford handles percussion, and Leonard Caston adds some nice funky keyboards. Track listing: 1. I AM YOUR MAN 4:19 2. This Elemental Music reissue presents the solo debut album for former Temptations’ lead singer David Ruffin. It was originally released by Motown Records in May of 1969. After leaving The Temptations, Ruffin was still considered a key component of the Motown family, and on this album he was afforded support by the best and brightest figures the label had to offer, working with top-notch hit making producers Harvey Fuqua, Johnny Bristol, Paul Riser, and Ivory Joe Hunter. “My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)” was supposed to be a Temptations record. Instead, it became Ruffin’s first solo single. The song was written by Johnny Bristol, Harvey Fuqua, Pam Sawyer, and James Roach, with Bristol and Fuqua producing the record. Background vocals were by The Originals, who would have a hit of their own with “The Bells” the following year. The backing band were the essential Motown in-house rhythm makers, The Funk Brothers. “My Whole World Ended” was an auspicious debut, as it reached #2 on the Billboard R&B Singles chart, #9 on the Billboard Hot 100, and paved the way to the release of the album, which reached #1 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart. Without a doubt, the song “My Whole World Ended” is more emotional and raw than the smooth soul sound of Ruffin’s former group. This Elemental Music release presents one of the two only albums that Solomon Burke released on the Chicago label Chess Records between 1975 & 1976: the underrated masterpiece Music to Make Love By. This is an incredible record – a real standout in Solomon’s career. It features the genius of “King Solomon” working with arrangements that are smooth, mellow, and sexy – very much in the Barry White and Isaac Hayes mode, a style that’s a perfect fit for Solomon’s voice, which was warm and deep back when White and Hayes were just kids! Gene Page (who also used to work with Barry White) helped Solomon with some of the arrangements. Solomon Burke said soul music is “life itself, the very blood running through your veins, and it’s your heartbeat”. It is this very sentiment that runs through the entire album.
