Live at the Village Vanguard MARC RIBOT TRIO Guitarist Marc Ribot makes his next appearance on Pi with his trio featuring bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Chad Taylor, recorded live at the venerable Village Vanguard. Not only was it Ribot’s debut as a leader at the iconic venue, the occasion also marked the first appearance by Grimes at the Vanguard since 1966, right before his mysterious 35-year disappearance from the scene. In a wide-ranging set, the trio plays the music of Albert Ayler, covers tracks from the John Coltrane album “Sun Ship,” and even plays two ballad standards! Ribot, whose unmistakable sound is sought after by musicians of all stripes – from Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, John Zorn, T Bone Burnett, Susana Baca, Neko Case, Diana Krall… the list goes on – astounds with his playing, spinning one frenetic, snarling solo after another. Sound, Space and Structures JOHN ESCREET The impressive collaboration between John Escreet’s Trio and the luminary saxophonist Evan Parker on Sound, Space and Structures is truly revelatory. It provides a wonderful example of an innovator without boundaries working with equally passionate musicians of the next generation who plan to keep rattling expectations. The Doncaster-born Escreet moved to New York in 2006. His deft approach to piano brought him quick attention from press and peers and allowed him to perform alongside many of jazz’s most celebrated musicians, including Antonio Sanchez, Chris Potter, Tyshawn Sorey, Ambrose Akinmusire and David Binney. Escreet’s own projects have focused around his Trio and Quintet - called the John Escreet Project - and have increasingly branched out into the worlds of modern classical and electronic music.

Escreet has been a long time fan of the master improviser Evan Parker. A perfect opportunity for an initial meeting presented itself when Parker was invited to curate a week at John Zorn’s performance space, The Stone. He invited Escreet and his Trio to perform with him on September 18th, 2013. As Parker was in town for another week, Escreet arranged a recording session at Sear Sound on September 25th. The recording session generated a number of very different pieces, which Escreet edited down to nine tracks for release, showcasing each individual and the results of their tremendous congregation.

Chicago Fire ERIC ALEXANDER There's an old saying that a great jazz musician never plays a song the same way once. That could certainly be said of Eric Alexander. One of the busiest players in jazz yet his playing is as imaginative as ever, with the ideas pouring out of his horn. His harmonic inventiveness is exceptional and he'll run the changes at such length at times that you wonder if he'll resolve everything in time and end up back on the beat – but he always does. He has a big, full, sound, and a ferocious technique, with access to the full range of his instrument, all under super-human control. Both the Bird and the Sonny Rollins legacies have been thoroughly internalized but here Eric explores the repertoire of another school of tenor playing – the Chicagoans. The Adventurous Monk ERIC REED Jazz pianists today must practice their art in the shadow of the towering figure of Thelonious Monk. If that be the case, then botanists would label pianist Eric Reed a Night Blooming Jazzman for he not only thrives in that shadow, but he embraces it in this installment of his ongoing exploration of Monk's music. Reed is faced with the daunting task of separating Monk's music from his piano playing, retaining the compositions, and then bringing something new to the party. This new recording -- along with Reed's two previous volumes -- takes Monk's unique and highly identifiable music and compliments it rather than trying to completely rework it. In the process, Reed has managed to make these works sound fresh and interesting while never resorting to incongruous pianism to resurrect the style of the composer and never compromising his own considerable musical integrity.

Stories ENRICO PIERANUNZI A creatively inspired trio. Once again Enrico Pieranunzi has joined up with Scott Colley on double bass and Antonio Sanchez on drums for a recording session which gave rise to the amazing “Stories”, an enlightened, flowing, joyful CD. This album, recorded at Avatar Studio, New York, in February 2011, is a collection of eight tracks, most of which were composed by the Roman pianist. Jazz, Pieranunzi’s fondness for classical music, a Latin flavour by Sanchez: everything merges in a single discourse that perfectly combines different accents, allowing listeners 49 minutes of highly enjoyable, engaging, magnetic compositions.

The passionate three-track opening with “No Improper Use”, “Detrás Más Allá” and “Blue Waltz”, gives way to the soft “The Slow Gene” by Scott Colley, the only song which wasn’t written by the Roman pianist. Then there are the experiments of “Which Way Is Up”, a frenzied piece lasting less than four minutes in which the trio runs through a vibrant game of improvisation. The final part of the CD opens with “Where Stories Are”, which has the honour of and is credited with giving the title to this work, then flows into the peaceful haven of “Flowering Stones”. There is nothing left to do but close with a dreamy “The Real You”.

Kubic's Cure PIERRICK PÉDRON The French saxophonist's previous ACT recording was a blistering tribute to Monk. Fair game for a jazz player. It was in the spring of 2013 that an idea (unlike any other) took seed in Pierrick Pedron's imagination. Few would have dared take bets on the celebration of his love (of thirty years!) for one of the UK's most unique and successful bands: The Cure! From their steadfast indie beginnings through decades in which the hits piled up and the stadium shows grew bigger, Cure-mania became a musical constant: A Forest, Close To Me, Why Can’t I Be You?, Just Like Heaven, Lullaby, Boys Don’t Cry... and at the front of the stage, a literate singer-composer and admirer of Albert Camus (whose "The Stranger" had inspired his Killing An Arab, often misunderstood) whose words and demeanour welcomed the disenfranchised.

Pierrick Pédron got down to the task in the summer of 2013: he made some drastic choices among compositions that were either known or less so, and overcame their primary harmonic simplicity to imagine arrangements which would allow the music to live another life - it was about how to dynamite music that was powerful, sombre and obsessive, without betrayal, whilst fervently hollowing out the furrow of its minimalistic melodies. It might perhaps be necessary to point out that being a Cure connoisseur is not a prerequisite in order to enjoy the intense pleasures of this second cubic experience. Flowers of Sendai JAN LUNDGREN TRIO Jan Lundgren is a part of a long tradition of innovative Scandinavian pianists. Inspired by folk music tradition and jazz improvisation, he quickly immersed himself into the entire piano tradition and built himself a strong reputation in Sweden. He has served as a sideman for some of the biggest names in music such as Johnny Griffin, Benny Golson, and singer Stacey Kent. He has received an impressive amount of prestigious prizes such as the Thore Ehrling Award in 2010, the German Jazz Award in 2011 for his gold disc and more recently the Skane Cultural Award in 2012. Standards Live - At the Village Vanguard LEE KONITZ The Great American Song Book has been in focus of alto saxophone legend Lee Konitz for most of his improviser’s life. For years he returns on stage or studios to the great standards constantly exploring the harmonic and rhythmic structures, never repeating himself in his solo work. At the Vanguard recording session he made it a point to nearly disguise the melody and let the audience guess which standard he actually improvised on – kind of testing the musical qualities of the listeners who had great fun in this game. Some songs were played quite straight ahead, others were more difficult to decipher. It became immediately evident what great material he had picked to improvise upon. This approach did not only work perfectly well for Lee but for his colleagues as well. German pianist Pianist Florian Weber, US bassist Jeff Denson and Israeli drummer Ziv Ravitz felt fully at home with Lee’s demanding concept and used the freedom it gave them to fascinating results. He was so impressed by this international trio that he called their association THE NEW LEE KONITZ QUARTET, pointing out that he hadn’t had his own regular group for decades. The band now works on and off with Lee Konitz in Europe, the US and Japan.

Lee had lived in Cologne, Germany with his family for 20 years before returning to New York. The last time he had played at the Village Vanguard was 1983 and the New York press gave him a great “Welcome Home, Lee” and a half page article in the New York Times. Music From Videogames BOoOM Insert Coin. Press Start. Jazz musicians have a long tradition of finding inspiration in popular music and culture. For many kids and young adults the melodies of video games have become a new kind of standards. For more than a quarter of a century people have been playing videogames. Space Invaders and Pac Man down the local chip shop or in fairground arcades, later on at home on consoles like Arcade, Nintendo or Play Station, and still later on the Gameboy or the Smartphone. In his new project paying tribute to video games and the music and melodies programmed therein, drummer / percussionist Gerwin Eisenhauer has three of his favourite musicians on board: Pianist Walter Lang (his fellow member in the Trio ELF), upright and electric bass player Uli Zrenner – Wolkenstein, and Scottish guitarist Graeme Stephen (voted Best Guitarist in the UK 2012). Payan ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH Never before released on CD: the first piano solo recording of one of the leading and most influential musicians from the first generation of European free improvisers. Alex von Schlippenbach studied classical composition with Bernd Alois Zimmermann at the Hochschule Köln, at the same time he started working as a jazz pianist with Gunter Hampel and Manfred Schoof. In 1966 he established the "Globe Unity Orchestra" certainly one of the most influencial and successful European jazz groups. Schlippenbach has been invited to perform all over the world and achieved numerous awards for his work as pianist, composer and bandleader. All compositions Alexander von Schlippenbach. Amoureuse ELISABETH KONTOMANOU Although based for a long time in America, and currently in Sweden, for her latest album Elisabeth Kontomanou has chosen to reflect the music of her homeland, France, replacing her usual English-language Standards repertoire with a selection of chansons francaises. The melodies she heard as a small child, and which awakened her life-long love of song, were joined with words imbued with meaning to her. The songs belong to French popular heritage and are frequently associated with a particular artist, often also the writer, for example Charles Aznavour, Gilbert Bécaud, Fréhel and Jacques Brel. Like them, Elisabeth inhabits these songs with her own voice and personality, suggesting the emotional – even autobiographical – resonance they provoke in her. She is surrounded by her musician sons and a group of fi rst-class French instrumentalists which includes trumpeter Eric Le Lann and harmonica player Olivier Ker Ourio, both of whom have proven affinities with this repertoire. Angela Manukian, the versatile singer of Volga, has collected ancient texts dating back as far as 1100 A.D. in Russian villages of different regions, all of them written in various dialects. Each dialect requires an unique vocal technique and stands for a singular sound, carefully studied and mastered by the singer. Some might say Volga is the sound of the Middle Ages erupting in our times. Others might object by saying that this is the third millennium speaking to us in the language of the Russian Middle Ages.
