Slow Eastbound Train DANIEL HERSKEDAL A tuba playing jazz musician might have the right to describe his sound as unique – after all, tuba soloists in jazz are as rare as hen’s teeth. But when we describe Norwegian tuba player and composer Daniel Herskedal as unique, we’re not referring to his choice of horn. In the last few years this young musician has proved he has the facility, vision and musicianship to push the boundaries of his instrument, technically and sonically, further than anyone has done so. The result, as demonstrated by his new album ‘Slow Eastbound Train’, is a spellbinding and mesmerising sound worthy of a vast international audience. In Norwegian musicians Eyolf Dale (piano) and Helge Andreas Norbakken (percussion) as well as the Trondheim Soloists, Norway’s most celebrated string orchestra, Daniel has the perfect vehicle to demonstrate his facility as both instrumentalist and composer. And ‘Slow Eastbound Train’ is a sublimely beautiful and melodic album full of diverse influences and unique soundscapes that entirely fulfils both Daniel’s promise and the full potential of this group.

Beneath the melodic, sublime, elegant themes that make up the pieces on ‘Slow Eastbound Train’ there’s a rhythmical energy in the string writing as well as the virtuosity of his tuba playing that gives the album its wonderfully varied and vibrant feel. This is the sound of a master arranger and musical thinker at work. Track listing 1. The Mistral Noir 4:11 2. Rainfall 3:37 3. Monsoon Coming 6:34 4. The Solar Winds Effects on Earth 4:06 5. Afro Blue HAROLD MABERN Harold Mabern’s second release on Smoke Sessions Records, Afro Blue, is a very special recording featuring a truly stellar cast of guest vocalists: Gregory Porter, Norah Jones, Jane Monheit, Kurt Elling, and Alexis Cole.

Label: Smoke Sessions File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: SSR1503 Barcode: 888295177337 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Harold Mabern - piano, with: Gregory Porter - vocals (tracks 2 & 3) Norah Jones - vocals (tracks 4 & 5) Jane Monheit - vocals (tracks 6 & 7) Kurt Elling - vocals (tracks 8, 9 & 10) Alexis Cole - vocals (track 11) Peter Bernstein - guitar (track 12) Jeremy Pelt - trumpet (tracks 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 & 11) Steve Turre - trombone (tracks 2, 4, 6 & 11) Eric Alexander - tenor saxophone (except 5, 12, 13 & 14) John Webber - bass (except 5) Joe Farnsworth - drums (except 5)

The chemistry of these artists with Harold — the sound of his piano voicings combined with their voices — is extraordinary. Well-known in jazz circles as a consummate accompanist for instrumental soloists, Mabern also has a special gift for sensitive and supportive playing behind singers. It’s something he takes pride in and has been doing since he first hit the stage at Birdland half a century ago with Betty Carter. “I love vocalists. I love to play for singers because that’s really how you learn how to play the piano jazz-wise. They go through every aspect of music — changing keys, slow tempos to fast, playing rubato, playing verses, all of the Great American Songbook — that’s really how you learn how to play,” says Mabern. There is a lot of music and there are a lot of memorable performances on Afro Blue but Mabern’s soulful, blues-driven style is the constant highlight. He is joined by a stellar supporting cast — Jeremy Pelt, Eric Alexander and Steve Turre form a killer horn section while John Webber and Joe Farnsworth complete his reliable rhythm team. Guitarist Peter Bernstein also makes a special appearance on Steely Dan’s “Do It Again.” Track listing: 1. The Chief 5:07 2. Afro Blue 5:25 3. The Man from Hyde Park 5:52 4. Fools Rush In 4:36 5. Monoceros EVAN PARKER Soprano saxophone solos originally recorded direct-to-disc in 1978 at Nimbus Studios, Wyastone Leys, Monmouth by Michael & Gerald Reynolds. Originally issued as Incus LP 19 and previously reissued as Chronoscope CPE 2002-2. "On Monoceros, Parker explores a wide range of soprano saxophone work, though most of it is hardly recognizable as such: squeaking, squawking, and birdlike noises persist throughout. The first piece on the record spans a long 21 minutes of essentially uninterrupted solo saxophone, facilitated by Parker's exceptional technical command of the instrument: circular breathing, triple-tonguing, false fingering, etc. The guiding principle of this music, as realized by Parker, was to use technical prowess to remove the barriers between the sounds in his head and the sounds coming from his horn. Generations of saxophone players who followed in Parker's footsteps owe a huge debt to his innovations on the instrument. Indeed, none of Monoceros is easy listening: Parker seems driven to play as freely and outspokenly as possible." All About Jazz

Double Circle ENRICO PIERANUNZI & FEDERICO CASAGRANDE A piano and an acoustic guitar. “Double Circle” is the album that brought Enrico Pieranunzi and Federico Casagrande together in a recording studio for the first time: two musicians from different generations and with different backgrounds, but united by their love for jazz. This love has led Pieranunzi to become a reputable piano master over time and Casagrande to live far from home, since he left the province of Treviso (Italy) and moved all the way to Paris to learn the ropes in the jazz clubs of the French capital and returned more mature and ready to tell his musical tale. Two different paths crossed in a recording studio in Udine and gave rise to a charming record including airy, quiet tunes that alternate with small, more quick-paced movements. Pieranunzi and Casagrande wrote all of the tracks here, except for “Beija Flor” by Noel Silva, Augusto Tomás Jr and Nelson Cavaquinho.

Luminosa ANAT COHEN Luminosa sees clarinetist-saxophonist Anat Cohen play dancing originals, interpret Brazilian classics by the likes of Milton Nascimento, and even re-imagine electronica as acoustica with an ingenious arrangement of a Flying Lotus tune. Members from Anat’s touring quartet – keyboardist Jason Lindner, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Daniel Freedman – appear on the album, as do guest guitarists Romero Lubambo and Gilad Hekselman, percussionist Gilmar Gomes and the Brazilian players of her new band Choro Aventuroso. Anat has been named the top clarinetist in both the readers and critics polls in DownBeat, the jazz bible, for multiple years running. And her fluency in the jazz tradition is utterly at one with her flair for Brazilian music. Anat sums up the album this way: “The title Luminosa is Portuguese for luminous – something shining, especially in the dark. To me, music is a luminous experience. Whenever I’m immersed in it, life lights up for me, no matter what else is going on."

Dark Nights AVISHAI COHEN'S TRIVENI Dark Nights is the soul-deep third album from rising star trumpeter Avishai Cohen’s trio Triveni with bassist Omer Avital and drummer Nasheet Waits, and guest performances by superstar clarinetist Anat Cohen and pianist Gerald Clayton. Avishai is also joined by French-Israeli singer-songwriter Keren Ann for a duet on “I Fall in Love Too Easily,” which sees the two indulging their shared love of Chet Baker. The purview of Dark Nights is wide, from intimate lyricism to electrifying virtuosity, from jazz standards to progressive originals. The classic balladry of Billy Strayhorn’s “Lush Life” and Charles Mingus’s “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” rubs shoulders with electronics-stoked compositions from Avishai’s pen that groove hard and burn slow, by turns. The New York Times has praised him as “an extravagantly skilled trumpeter, relaxed and soulful. . . deftly combining sensitivity and flair,” Avishai is a member of the hit 3 Cohens band with his siblings Anat and Yuval, as well as the all-star SFJazz Collective. Dark Nights is Avishai Cohen’s state of the art.

Snowy Egret MYRA MELFORD On Snowy Egret the eminent pianist-composer-educator Myra Melford presents the debut of, as she puts it, “a killer band” that she assembled in 2012 to perform a suite of music inspired by Uruguayan author Eduardo Galeano’s epic Memory of Fire trilogy, a history of the Americas told through indigenous myths and the accounts of European colonizers. A year later, in November 2013, at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, near Melford’s Berkeley home, the unit — Ron Miles on cornet, Liberty Ellman on guitar, Stomu Takeishi on bass, and Tyshawn Sorey on drums — performed the music in a multi-disciplinary performance titled Language of Dreams, with dancer/choreographer Oguri, video artist David Szlasa, and vocalist Sofia Rei reciting Galeano’s texts in English and Spanish.

With or without the extra-musical trappings, Melford’s ten pieces — informed by a host of Pan-American flavors, hardcore jazz, the blues, and African and Eastern elements — are an aural feast. Completely in control of her materials, she operates with a broad harmonic and rhythmic palette, conjuring memorable melodies for her ensemble of individualistic virtuosos to interpret. In sum, the CD represents the most comprehensive iteration yet of her capacious musical imagination. Track listing: 1. Language 5:27 2. Night of Sorrow 6:44 3. Promised Land 5:44 4. Nexus PAT MARTINO Recorded at the Tin Angel in the Old City section of Philly, Nexus represents a rare look at jazz guitar master Pat Martino in the stripped down setting of duos with one of his most empathetic partners to date, pianist Jim Ridl. On Nexus Martino's signature voice is instantly revealed in these intimate recordings with Ridl, a longtime member of the guitarist's working quartet and a valued duet partner for ten years. This previously unissued material includes originals by Ridl and his interesting arrangement of Sonny Rollins' “Oleo.” Also featured is Martino's legendary “Country Road,” a tune well-known by guitarists from its famous transcription, but which is making its first appearance on a recording. Indeed, Nexus is a welcome addition to the Martino discography and a reminder of the remarkable rapport between the Philly jazz icon and the North Dakota native, two musicians who come from different generations and different parts of the country but very much speak the same language.

Feelin' Good MARY STALLINGS Writing about Mary Stallings The New York Times declared that “perhaps the best jazz singer singing today is a woman almost everybody seems to have missed. Bay Area jazz lovers chuckled ruefully over yet another blast of East Coast parochialism, long recognizing Ms. Stallings as a singular jazz treasure. Her talents were also recognized by the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Eckstine, Count Basie, Cal Tjader, Ben Webster and Wes Montgomery, who all went out of their way to showcase this supremely soulful singer. For her latest HighNote outing, Bruce Barth occupies the piano bench and handles the arranging duties with Peter Washington and Kenny Washington rounding out the rhythm section. Mary herself requested the added tone color of Steve Nelson's vibes, Freddie Hendrix's trumpet and the latin percussion of the irrepressible Ray Mantilla. So here again is Mary Stallings, enjoying her recording resurgence, singing with such confidence, poise and authority that every tune feels like a custom-tailored garment expertly made for her fine-grained tone, relaxed phrasing and supple sense of swing.

Basalte VÉRONIQUE HERMANN SAMBIN Véronique Hermann Sambin is a singer, songwriter, author and musician born at Pointe-à-Pitre on the island of Guadeloupe in the French Caribbean. Her journey from the idyllic Caribbean island to Paris is as unique as her voice. Véronique decided to set down her suitcases in Paris after stops in Munich and Antwerp, and obtaining a business school diploma. She worked as a sales director for a record company before deciding to focus on her music career on a full-time basis.

Label: Jazz Family File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: JF003 Barcode: 3341348158518 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Véronique Hermann Sambin - vocals Xavier Richardeau - saxophone & clarinet Frédéric Nardin - piano & keyboard Samuel Hubert - double bass Inor Sotolongo - percussion Romain Sarron - drums

Véronique Hermann Sambin attaches great importance to the words and melodies of her songs, which she writes and sings in Creole, French and English. Her sophisticated voice is loaded with emotion and takes the listener to an original and under-explored nexus between pop, jazz and Caribbean music. The rhythms and tempos change, and the moods as well. Each song has its own no-frills attitude, but is graced by Véronique’s warm poetry. She, who, as the “lyricist” and composer, wrote almost all the songs, also recorded a poem (“Love After Love”) by the Nobel Prize of Literature poet-playwright Derek Walcott, from Saint-Lucia. Although French and English are used in “Basalte”, Creole is the foremost language - Véronique is true to her mother tongue, gracing the whole album with an “unheard” originality. Track listing: 1. The first two sessions, HAH! from 1976 and THE CONSTANT EXTENSION OF INESCAPABLE TRADITION from 1977, were issued on two hat Hut LPs (with two tracks missing). The third, WHEN I WAS FIVE YEARS OLD, I PREDICTED YOUR WHOLE LIFE from 1978, was scheduled to appear on Horo, but that label went bust before it happened, so this material is now making a very belated first appearance. Art TATUM / Benny CARTER / Louis BELLSON The complete original trio session showcasing the brilliant Art Tatum with Benny Carter on alto sax, and Louie Bellson on drums. Originally issued on three different EPs on the Clef label and two LPs on the Verve label, this music constitutes one of the various pairings of Tatum with other jazz greats produced by Norman Granz in the last years of the pianist’s life. Tatum was seriously ill at that time and neglected by record companies due to stylistic changes in the music industry. He would die on November 5, 1956 at the age of 47. As a bonus, we have added the only two other existing versions of the classic “Makin’ Whoopee” recorded by Tatum, both on unaccompanied piano. Includes 16-page booklet.

During various marathon recording sessions in 1953-56, Norman Granz taped Art Tatum playing both alone and coupled with various other stars he had under contract. A heavy drinker, Tatum was seriously ill by that time and he would die on November 5, 1956 at the age of 47. The collaborations undertaken by Granz produced some of the most beautiful music in Tatum’s discography – the Tatum-DeFranco album reissued here is one of the finest examples (no other conjunct work between the two musicians exists). During the sessions many musicians were just as amazed at the amount of beer Tatum drank as they were at Tatum’s staggering musical virtuosity. Although his excessive drinking didn’t affect his playing, it did unfortunately affect his health. Granz’s recordings of Tatum are, therefore, a testament of one of the most outstanding artists jazz ever produced. We are deeply indebted to Granz, who once wrote: “I think if I am ever remembered for any meaningful contribution to jazz it was presenting permanently for the future the incredible artistry of the greatest instrumental soloist in the history of jazz, Art Tatum”. CANNONBALL ADDERLEY LIMITED EDITION CLASSIC LPs 180 gram VINYL – AUDIOPHILE PRESSING INCLUDES FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD

Label: Jazz Wax File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: JWR4566 Barcode: 8436542018173 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 LP JULIAN “CANNONBALL” ADDERLEY, alto sax with: A1-A5 & B1 NAT ADDERLEY, cornet JUNIOR MANCE, piano SAM JONES, bass JIMMY COBB, drums B2-B4 JOHN COLTRANE, tenor sax WYNTON KELLY, piano PAUL CHAMBERS, bass JIMMY COBB, drums

The music on this LP presents two different formations led by Julian “Cannonball” Adderley (1928-1975). Side A and the first song on Side B showcase one of the best formations led by Cannonball during his whole career. This “Cannonball” Adderley Quintet included his brother Nat Adderley on cornet, pianist Junior Mance, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Jimmy Cobb. The musical empathy between the two brothers was long standing: “Nat and I played together for many years”, explained Cannonball during a 1972 interview, “and we developed lots of things, based on other people’s material, and some ideas of our own. We were basically just simple players. We had never been exposed to the blood and guts, dog-eat-dog syndrome. We were just Florida guys. So we played a lot of blues, a lot of funk, a lot of gospel-sounding stuff, and cute things based on Bird and Dizzy, Bird and Miles, based on that feeling.” Side A: 1. OUR DELIGHT 4:40 2. Viaticum 2LP E.S.T. (Esbjorn Svensson Trio) 180g DOUBLE VINYL EDITION WITH DOWNLOAD CODE "An over zealous junkmail filter might think Viaticum is some kind of new impotence drug but its real meaning - the blessing given to a dying person sets out a new, darker tone for the Esbjorn Svensson Trio (E.S.T.'s) ninth album. Along with free pencils in furniture shops, E.S.T. are surely one of Sweden's greatest gifts to the globe. Their Radiohead meets Keith Jarrett soundworld and busy touring schedule have made them what in these times may seem like an oxymoron; a credible crossover act. ...If you're new to E.S.T, perhaps a better place to start would be one of their lighter previous albums. If you're already a fellow traveller though, this more subdued installment comes highly recommended." BBC Music

Tuesday Wonderland 2LP E.S.T. (Esbjorn Svensson Trio) 180g DOUBLE VINYL EDITION WITH DOWNLOAD CODE "Given that this is their 10th album, Sweden's EST could be forgiven if they began to show signs of slowing down. Instead, their momentum seems to have got appreciably faster with each successive release and with Tuesday Wonderland they're soaring. First they wooed their homeland and, indeed, Europe as a whole before setting their sights on America, where they were the first European jazz group in Downbeat magazine's 72-yearold history to make the cover. The headline said it all: 'Europe invades: the Esbjorn Svensson Trio leads the breakthrough of new, adventurous jazz musicians coming from across the pond.' ...Tuesday Wonderland offers numerous reasons as to why EST are one of the few bands in existence that can genuinely be called unique." **** Guardian

Lila Derdeba, Beyond the Ritual ALWANE The Gnawa is a popular Sufi brotherhood that expresses their faith through music and dance, culminating in a trance state. It is on the lila derdeba (trance nights) than Gnawas manifest their exceptional gifts as exorcists and healers, treating patients with physical or psychological suffering. On this album, the group Alwane ("Colours") explores the connections between Gnawa and jazz. The concept was born following Alwane's meeting with the Mad Nomad Quartet and Dar Gnawa and is inspired by the musical repertoire of lila derdeba. A bonus DVD documentary (in English or French) explores the mystical world of the Gnawa using audiovisual documents gathered by Jacques Willemont over 40 years and features insights from anthropologist Viviana P창ques.

Desperate Dance PABLO ZIEGLER & QUIQUE SINESI Pablo Ziegler is the most important artist of the Tango Nuevo and Astor Piazolla's legitimate successor. Between 1978 and 1989 he worked continously with Astor Piazolla and contributed substantially to his enormous success. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Latin Grammy-winning pianist, composer and arranger Pablo Ziegler artfully blends classic tango with elements of jazz, adding a new voice to the rich tango lexicon. The exceptional guitarist Quique Sinesi’s music is an immensely lively and sparkling symbiosis created from the rich inheritance of the South American continent, from Tango, Milonga, traditional folk rhythms interpreted with new concepts, and Jazz. Bandoneon player Walter Castro makes up the trio, which has toured frequently in Europe and Asia, leaving enthusiastic and astonished audiences and setting new standards in Tango Nuevo. The sheer virtuosity, cohesion and sensitivity of these three makes comparison with others futile, they are all masters in their field.
