/LRQ MARIUS NESET & TRONDHEIM JAZZ ORCHESTRA The 29-year-old internationally acclaimed Norwegian saxophonist-composer Marius Neset takes another bold step forward into the art of contemporary extended ensemble writing on his debut recording Lion for ACT. It’s a collaboration with the renowned Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, a project-based collective that since its formation in 1999 has toured Norway with stellar musicians that include Chick Corea, Pat Metheny and Joshua Redman. Neset originally received a commission to compose for the orchestra in 2011 for a concert at the 2012 Molde Jazz Festival. “After the premiere in Molde, these compositions felt so special that we decided to record this album and play many more concerts with it.” he says. With his adventurous and highly atmospheric arrangements, Neset opens up the sonic palette on Lion to an unusually broad range of ensemble colours and textures. The track listing is a mix of the commissioned material and rearrangements of a few of the strongest pieces from his previous critically lauded 2012 larger ensemble release Bird and 2010 debut Golden Xplosion – Guardian writer John Fordham was among the critics at the time raving about it, accurately predicting Neset was, “on his way to being one of the biggest new draws on the circuit” He has made quite an impact on the contemporary European jazz scene for someone of his age.

/LIH 7R (YHU\WKLQJ PHRONESIS Life to Everything is the new live album by Anglo/Scandinavian trio Phronesis, recorded over three shows ‘in the round’ at The Cockpit, London as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival in November 2013. With a highly developed musical understanding between them, onstage these three strong individual personalities are very much a collective, demonstrating an uncanny empathy and a telepathic singular sound like the synaptic firings of one mind. With totally balanced contributions by each band member, the warmth and intensity of the trio’s magical interaction is captured perfectly on Life to Everything. Instrumation GWILYM SIMCOCK Following quickly on from the Duo Art release Reverie at Schloss Elmau, that saw Gwilym paired with Russian pianist Yuri Goloubev, the Welsh pianist returns with a more expansive work, again featuring Goloubev and with Martin France at the drums. Gwilym's latest project features music in that space between classical and jazz where he feels most comfortable. The album consists of two works: "Move!" - a suite of three movements linked by solo piano interludes, for jazz quartet with the City of London Sinfonia - and "Simple Tales" - a more straightforward collection of tunes, originally written as a commission for Classical piano trio and featuring Thomas Gould on violin and Will Schofield on cello, here augmented with bass and drums.

Birthday Edition JOACHIM KÜHN Together with Daniel Humair and Jean-François Jenny-Clark, Joachim Kühn formed what became one of the most authoritative trios of European jazz for decades. These previously unreleased live concert recordings from the JazzFest Berlin - from 1987 and 1995 - that can be found on this special "Birthday Edition" double CD bring this exceptional trio back to life. Kühn was also a key figure in the recordings of the jazz symphony "Europeana", his first for the label and still today one of the most outstanding recordings in the ACT catalogue. Alongside Kühn, the crème de la crème of contemporary European improvised music came together here, including Albert Mangelsdorff, Django Bates, Klaus Doldinger, Richard Galliano and many others, backed by the NDR Hannover Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. The album, which came out in 1995, and was arranged by Michael Gibbs, combines the rich European tradition of music with jazz. So it makes sense that this recording, which paved the way for his career since the start of the 90s, completes the "Birthday Edition" alongside the ground-breaking Trio Kühn, Humair, Jenny-Clark.

%HOOH eSRTXH VINCENT PEIRANI & EMILE PARISIEN Alongside and thanks to his ACT colleague Youn Sun Nah – who took him wither her on her tour of France and into the studio band for her album "Lento"– the 33 year old accordionist Vincent Peirani is undisputedly the French shooting star of the last two years. No less in demand is Emile Parisien, who is two years younger, and a fellow resident of Paris. Like Peirani on the accordion, Parisien is seen as the reinventer of the soprano saxophone and as its leading French protagonist. On Belle Époque, their first duo project together, they process the legacy of their great predecessors, on tunes old and new. In Peirani the great French accordion tradition from Richard Galliano to Jean-Louis Matinier can be seen – despite his unmistakable own style of sound and technique. And one can also interpret Parisien's playing as a genuflect to the other masters of the alto saxophone: Bechet, John Coltrane, Steve Lacy and Wayne Shorter – and at the same time as an homage to the inventor of the saxophone Adolphe Sax, on his 200th anniversary.

Libera Me LARS DANIELSSON A CD re-issue of the previously SACD-only, and long deleted, 2004 recording by Lars Danielsson with guests Nils Petter-Molvaer, Jon Christensen and Cæcilie Norby. Danielsson's highly-developed creativity in many disciplines is clearly set out on this album, yet unostentatiously. In twelve pieces, including the title track, an instrumental version "Libera Me" (Deliver me), the sixth movement of the Requiem by French composer Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), the album makes one realise that we have here an instrumentalist of the best quality, a highly competent orchestrator and composer of wonderful memorable melodies - as well as being a leader with a great awareness of the qualities of other musicians. The sinuous soprano saxophone lines of Dave Liebman, the melancholy tones of trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer, the voice of Cæcilie Norby but also the samples of Jan Bang, are all brought together in a particularly sensitive and harmonious manner.

Both contain famous and less known tunes, marvellously re-arranged and played by the trio. As an exclusive treat, this re-release offers two pieces (“Musashi� and “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso�) recorded live during a performance in Tokyo in 2004 and included in the album “Live in Japan�.

Here and there, among renowned Morricone themes (“Il clan dei Siciliani�, “Stanno tutti bene�, “Il vizietto�, “Quando le donne avevano la coda�), a few tunes by Pieranunzi pop up in the CD, inspired by and connected with the master’s works. “Throughout the 70’s and 80’s,� – the pianist says, – “I had a very close bond with Ennio Morricone’s music, since I used to play as studio man for dozens of films whose soundtracks bore his signature. One can easily understand how unique it has been to find myself arranging that music, so as to render it an improvisation tool for the trio�.

The same applies to the collaborative relationship between the piano player from Italy’s Abruzzi region and the Scandinavian rhythm section consisting of the great Palle Danielsson on double bass and Olavi Louhivuori on drums. After approximately one year, “Breathing In Unison� is the ideal sequel to the outstanding “Facing North�.

Its concept is quite similar, too. Filippini took on writing all of the tunes in “Facing North� (except for a couple of pop classics and a couple of jazz standards). Here, the game is played again, with a significant extra, the superb “Night Flower� by Louhivuori. And with the usual mention of the pianist’s musical bents, whether pop, rock or jazz. So, there flow a wonderful “As Time Goes By�, but also an intriguing “Poses�, borrowed from that angelic-voiced man, Rufus Wainwright. This album includes two timeless hits that have weathered six decades of the history of song: “Secret Love�, originally sung by Doris Day and more recently re-evaluated by Mika, the star of Lebanese origin, and “A Time For Love� sung by Tony Bennett and Kurt Elling, previously performed by Oscar Peterson and Milt Jackson, among others. The album closes with a version of the James Carr soul classic “At The Dark End Of The Street�, written by Dan Penn & Chips Moman.

The consummate multitasker, Nathanson continually balances a schedule that's exhausting just to think about. Named one of “Five Drummers Whose Time Is Now” by the New York Times, Weiss is one of the most in demand musicians on the jazz scene. He began playing the drums at the age of six and received his bachelor's degree at Manhattan School of Music with a major in jazz percussion and minor in classical composition. He has toured and recorded with musicians such as David Binney, Lee Konitz, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Miguel Zenon and Kenny Werner, among many others. A disciple of the tabla master Pandit Samir Chatterjee, under whom he has studied for almost 20 years, Weiss is also arguably unique among jazz drummers for transposing ideas from his study of Indian classical music to the drum kit. A Fender Rhodes Solo JOZEF DUMOULIN Belgian-born keyboardist Jozef Dumoulin has always found himself within various musical dimensions. He initially played the piano, an instrument he still practices and cherishes deeply. In parallel, he developed his own unique sound on the Fender Rhodes, combining it with electronics. He has shared the stage and/or recorded with Mark Turner, Bill Carothers, Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman, Jaime Torres, Daniel Humair, Hilmar Jensson, Nelson Veras, Marc Ducret, Ronny Jordan, Robin McKelle‌ amongst many others. MILES DAVIS QUARTET Miles Davis only cut a few sides in a quartet format. During the early decades of his career, when his music was all acoustic, he favored the quintet format with a frontline of trumpet and tenor sax, and led amazing orchestral sessions backed by the Gil Evans band. He also recorded in larger groups, but his quartet performances are scarce. All of his quartet studio output from 1951-57 is contained in this set in chronological order, including as a bonus a live quartet performance of “What’s New?” (a song Miles never recorded in the studio under his own name) taped in Germany in 1956 and a live quartet version of “My Funny Valentine”, recorded in 1958 with Bill Evans on piano. One of the best live albums by the great Red Garland, At the Prelude marks his only recorded work with the trio of Jimmy Rowser on bass and Specs Wright on drums. While he would never record again with Rowser, he had taped two previous collaborations with Wright, both made around the same period the Prelude date took place. Both were made on August 12, 1959, a productive day on which Garland waxed a trio session with Wright on drums and Doug Watkins on bass, and a quartet date adding tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins to that trio (the trio selections were issued partly on Satin Doll and partly on Rediscovered Masters, while the quartet tracks appeared on Coleman Hawkins With The Red Garland Trio). After participating on many seminal modern jazz sessions in the late Fifties and early Sixties, Garland went into semi-retirement for many years, coming back in the late Seventies. He died from a heart attack in 1984, at the age of 60. According to Oscar Peterson it had “European trappings, chandeliers and the like. When I first started playing there, it also had one of the noisiest audiences in the world. We used to play the London House for two weeks or better, and we had a little apartment hotel near there and we had a chance to do a lot of rehearsing. We used to hold rehearsals after the club closed at night. The last weekend set was very late. We’d finish at 3:15 or 3:30 and we’d wait for everybody to clear out, then we’d have rehearsal until around 6:30 or 7:00 in the morning, until we were tired”.

During the early years of Thelonious Monk’s career, recording sessions were anything but abundant. From his earliest official sides in 1944, sales were apparently not enough to sustain a regular recording career: there were no studio sessions in 1949 and only one during 1950, in which Monk participated as a sideman for a Charlie Parker record. He only cut one session in 1951 –this time with Milt Jackson– followed by the two 1952 trio sessions contained on this LP (which also includes a 1954 date in the same format). These were the first recorded versions by Monk of all of the compositions presented here. Other than the pianist’s original compositions, the trio also performs two standards. Monk’s only other version of “These Foolish Things� is a 1964 solo reading for Columbia. “Sweet and Lovely�, on the other hand, was a tune frequently played by Monk in concerts with his quartet. The same can be said of “Just a Gigolo�, the only piano solo of the sessions. Although that solo performance was included, the original LP excluded two trio tunes recorded during the 1954 trio session: “Nutty� and “Work�. Both songs have been added here as a bonus, in order to present all three sessions in their entireties. 6RPHWKLQJ (OVH ORNETTE COLEMAN LIMITED EDITION 180g VINYL LP WITH DOWNLOAD CODE Something Else!!!! (1958) marked the debut recording by the Ornette Coleman Quintet, which featured the saxophonist/leader (playing a white plastic alto), Don Cherry on trumpet, Billy Higgins on drums, Walter Norris on piano, and Don Payne on bass. The date also marked Coleman’s first recordings ever in any context. The album shook up the jazz world, and particularly those musicians and critics who had entered the hard bop era with such verve and were busy using the blues as a way of creating vast solo spaces inside tight and short melody lines. Something Else!!!! is anathema to that entire idea, and must have sounded like it came from outer space at the time. Coleman’s interest was in pitch, not in “being in tune”. But what is most compelling is a revitalization of the blues as it expressed itself in jazz. Coleman refurbished the blues framework, threaded it through his jazz without getting rid of its folk-like, simplistic milieu. While he would record numerous times with both Cherry and Higgins, no further recordings exist by this exact quintet, and the saxophonist would never record again with either Norris or Payne.

Night Hawk showcases him with fellow saxophonist Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, a younger player who obviously admired Hawk. Night Hawk is a quintet album, showcasing both saxophonists with the support of a strong rhythm section composed of Tommy Flanagan on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums. At this time Ron Carter had yet to join the Miles Davis Quintet, which would lead him to fame (his first recordings with Miles date from 1963). Hawkins and Carter would only coincide on one more occasion in the recording studios, for the making of Hawk’s album The Hawk Relaxes, on February 28, 1961. Tommy Flanagan, on the other hand, was one of the saxophonist’s regular collaborators, both in the studio and live (their conjunct recordings span the period of 1958 to 1963).

Valentin Clastrier VALENTIN CLASTRIER Valentin Clastrier is one of the most innovative musicians in the French folk and jazz scenes, although really he exists in musical realms all of his own. Originally a guitarist, he was introduced to the hurdy-gurdy in 1970 and is now its prime exponent, playing both acoustic and electro-acoustic on his purpose-built 27-string instrument. At Home SAKAR KHAN Padma Shri Sakar Khan (1938-2013), from the village of Hamira in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district, was one of the great folk musicians of India. His instrument - the ‘kamancha’ (or kamaicha, kamaycha, kemancheh) - traces its roots back to the 8th century. A bowed lute with a goat skin sound box and three main gut strings with 14 sympathetic metal strings, it harks back to the lost bowed Raba'ab of Arabia, and perhaps further, in terms of both geography and time. Accompanying him on this album are his sons Ghewar, Firoze and Dara. In 2012 Khan was awarded the Padma Shri, India's highest civilian award, for his contribution to music. He has played alongside Yehudu Menuhin and George Harrison, and toured Europe and the USA in the 1970s and 80s, yet this is his debut, and only, album. Sakar Khan passed away in August 2013. His sons, highly accomplished musicians who learnt from their father, will now carry his legacy forward.

At Home LAKHA KHAN Lakha Khan, 67 is a sarangi player and vocalist, and perhaps the greatest exponent of the sindhi sarangi. Today, Lakha Khan is one of the last remaining Manganiyars to have mastered this complex instrument and to carry forward the centuries-old musical tradition of Rajasthani folk and Sufi music. He has performed extensively across Rajasthan and India, and internationally in the U.S., Europe and Japan including the Festival of India in the U.S.S.R., the Edinburgh Folk Music Festival and the Amarrass Desert Music Festival. A living legend, Lakha Khan is not only a virtuoso on the sarangi, he sings fluently in Sindhi, Punjabi, Hindi, Marwari and a variety of dialects, his knowledge and skill spanning the divide between folk and classical music. At Home BARMER BOYS Barmer Boys represent the next generation of folk from India. Folk with attitude. 21st Century folk. Their music is a harmonic blend of distinct performance styles and personalities, and melds Sufi, qawwali and folk traditions of the Indian sub-continent. Redux KEITH AND TEX It all began in the 1960s when two youths met in the Washington Gardens area of Saint Andrew Parish, a Kingston suburb, where they discovered a common passion for music and especially for the music of post-independence Jamaica. Keith Rowe and Texas Dixon quickly put together that magical combination of guitar and piano and two exceptional voices that would catapult them to fame. After failed auditions for Prince Buster, Studio 1 and Duke Reid they met Derrick Harriott who spotted their talent and provided the opportunity they needed. From this meeting flowed the rich vein of singles that made Keith and Tex’s rocksteady rep. As the sharp rhythms of ska simmered down and rocksteady emerged, the duo came into their own with a series of self-penned 7s. But it was a cover that gave them their 1967 international smash: the Spanishtonians ska hit Stop That Train. The relationship ended in 1970, leaving a short but sweet selection, now reissued and remastered on CD and vinyl by France’s Soulbeats imprint.
