MM3 METÁ METÁ Meta Meta is at the center of a new musical scene in Sao Paulo, biggest city in Brazil. The creative collective of which the group is an integral part has released over 30 albums in 5 years in collaboration with icons such as Tony Allen, Criolo, Tom Zé and Elza Soares. On their first album, "Meta Meta" (2011), the band presented a minimalistic sound with few instruments, combining polyphony and silence. For the follow up, "Metal Metal" (Mais Um Discos, 2012), they radically changed to a significantly more powerful and bulky sound, mixing influences from traditional Brazilian music, African, Latin, free jazz, punk and avant-garde.
Label: Jazz Village File Under: Alternative Rock / Brazil Catalogue No: 570122 Barcode: 3149027007320 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Juçara Marçal - vocals Kiko Dinucci - guitars Thiago França - saxophone, flute with Marcelo Cabral - bass Sergio Machado - drums
MM3 reveals a further sonic evolution, strongly influenced by music from Morocco, Ethiopa, Niger and Mali. MM3 was recorded live in two days and brings a more flexible sound with almost liquid structures, raging dynamics and lots of improvisation, faithful to the ecstatic and catarthic feeling from the group's live perfomances. It sounds darker then the previous ones and yet danceble, lots of strange minor scales and rough, sometimes indistinguishable harmonies, and more intrinsic arrangements. The album also features for the first time three songs composed by the three member of the group, along with collaborations with Siba and Rodrigo Campos. The core trio are joined by bassist and producer Marcelo Cabral and drummer Sergio Machado, both very active musicians in Sao Paulo's independent musical scene. The Call of the Wild and Peaceful Heart THE COOKERS THE COOKERS, the veteran jazz supergroup that The New York Times calls “a dream team of forward-leaning hard-bop,” returns with its fifth and most exhilarating album to date, The Call of the Wild and Peaceful Heart. After nine years together, The Cookers have evolved from a summit of swinging road warriors to become simply one of the most burning and hardest-hitting bands on the scene.
Label: Smoke Sessions File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: SSR1607 Barcode: 888295365635 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Eddie Henderson - trumpet David Weiss - trumpet Donald Harrison - alto saxophone Billy Harper - tenor saxophone George Cables - piano Cecil McBee - bass Billy Hart - drums
The Call of the Wild and Peaceful Heart marks The Cookers’ debut on Smoke Sessions Records and is the follow up to their critically acclaimed release Time and Time Again, which was the iTunes’ Jazz Album of the Year in 2014. Once again, the core of the band consists of five legendary, long-undersung musicians whose credentials read like a who’s-who of classic-era jazz: tenor saxophonist Billy Harper was a member of groups led by Lee Morgan and Max Roach and served a two-year stint with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers; trumpeter Eddie Henderson and drummer Billy Hart were both part of Herbie Hancock's electrifying Mwandishi ensemble; pianist George Cables played alongside Dexter Gordon and Art Pepper; and bassist Cecil McBee anchored Charles Lloyd’s famed 1960s quartet with Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette. They’re joined by torchbearers Weiss and, in his second outing with the band, alto saxophonist Donald Harrison. As always, the album’s repertoire is plumbed from the members’ vast discographies, a bevy of riches that Weiss says continues to yield surprises. “These guys should all be considered giants on their own,” Weiss insists. “The idea of The Cookers is to bring them to greater prominence, and a big part of that is this incredible legacy of compositions. I think this is our strongest record and top to bottom the strongest collection of tunes that we’ve done.” The Cookers UK Tour: Nov 14 - Sage, Gateshead / Nov 15 - Band on the Wall, Manchester / Nov 16 - Turner Sims, Southampton / Nov 17 Cadogan Hall, EFG London Jazz Festival Track listing: 1. Harlem On My Mind CATHERINE RUSSELL With her sixth album, Catherine Russell journeys to the blue heart of the great African American songbook. Swinging forth with soulful interpretations, Catherine taps the golden age in Harlem, as befits this vibrant daughter of jazz. Vocalists Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday, and Dinah Washington provide inspiration where tunesmiths like Benny Carter, Irving Berlin, Andy Razaf and Fats Waller once ruled the roost of a renaissance which continues to reverberate. Russell is a native New Yorker, born into musical royalty. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was a legendary pianist/composer/bandleader and Louis Armstrong's long-time musical director. Her mother, Carline Ray, was a pioneering vocalist/guitarist/bassist who performed with International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams, and Sy Oliver. Russell notes, “My mother was born and raised in Harlem and my father led one of the leading orchestras in Harlem, which was part of the inspiration for this album.”

And To The Republic ELEW Pianist Eric Lewis grew disheartened by the jazz music industry in the late ‘90s after a promising start in the ensembles of Wynton Marsalis and Elvin Jones. Subsequently, Lewis won the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition only to find that he wasn’t connecting to the material any longer. Lewis withdrew from the jazz world and reemerged with a new moniker and style, namely ELEW and rockjazz, a piano specific blend of contemporary pop and rock music in an aggressive acoustic improvisatory setting amplified by the artist’s endurance and intensity. After years of distancing himself from the jazz world, ELEW has decided to make a return in a remarkable triumvirate featuring bassist Reginald Veal and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts. His new recording, And To The Republic, features the forceful pianist’s fantastic prowess expressed in the genre that he first caught the attention of the listening public with, mainstream jazz. The recording is a sincere olive branch to jazz purists and the jazz community that he had spurned earlier.

The choice to return wasn’t one of necessity. ELEW has been successful throughout his career, which continues to branch into many streams. His intention in releasing this new recording is to reengage with the world that inspired him initially, to play with masters of the craft and to pay homage to his heroes, especially his former employer, drum legend Elvin Jones. Who better to fill the role on drums that the great Jeff “Tain” Watts? He is a true disciple of Elvin Jones and has the power, drive and knowledge within the full scope of jazz, having been part of the Young Lion generation led by Wynton and Branford Marsalis. The fantastic Veal has just as distinguished a résumé, being another Marsalis alumni and Elvin Jones protégé. Track listing: 1. Medicine Man 4:58 2. Ornette 4:37 3. Lil Luba 5:06 4. His playing has been lauded by many important and highly respected musicians, including Pat Metheny, Jean Luc Ponty and Mark Feldman. He had already garnered experience in the jazz world playing with Jon Hendricks, Tigran Hamasyan and Lonnie Plaxico. Since that time, the 30 year-old violinist has found himself in many eclectic musical settings, from Anthony Braxton’s recent opera Trillium J, sideman gigs with Natalie Cole, Christina Aguilera, and Gladys Knight to two years of touring with soul legend Stevie Wonder, not to mention his work in film and television. For the past 10 years, Tixier has been developing a new sound inspired by these collaborations both inside and outside of the jazz world, making him a multidimensional musician with a new voice on jazz violin.

On the Way to Two LP KENNY WHEELER & JOHN TAYLOR LIMITED EDITION 180g VINYL IN GATEFOLD SLEEVE When this album was mooted, following the death of Kenny Wheeler, it seemed impossible that by the time of its release both protagonists would be gone. And so, what was intended as a tribute to the great Canadian trumpet player, is instead a memorial to two musicians who, in their understated way, dominated jazz in the UK through the 70s and 80s, recording together in the band Azimuth and then on key labels ECM and Cam Jazz, creating a body of work that will stand witness to their greatness.
Label: CAM Jazz File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: CAMJ7895-1 Barcode: 8052405141880 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 LP Kenny Wheeler - trumpet, flugelhorn John Taylor - piano
Released from CAM JAZZ’s archives “On The Way To Two” was recorded in 2005 featuring 10 songs over a total 45 minutes of stunning music. Complex themes alternate with short improvised passages, as proof of that natural, special feeling that bound the two musicians. Before Taylor died, he wrote in the liner notes his valediction to Wheeler: “It was a privilege and joy to play with you for most of my life, and I wish you were here now to listen to this music again with me”. "On The Way to Two" demonstrates and celebrates the empathy that these two musicians managed to build and develop over the long years of their playing together. "An impressive portrait of a beautiful friendship." Downbeat "A beautiful recording, start to finish." The New York City Jazz Record Track listing: Side A 1. Canter #2 (K. Wheeler) 4:05 2. Fedora (K. Reborn SUN TRIO With Reborn, its fourth recording on CAM JAZZ, Finland's Sun Trio (featuring Olavi Loihivuori from Oddarrang) gives us another valuable opportunity to travel, undisturbed, across oneiric, powerful, dreamy, mythical, futuristic and also ancient sonic landscapes. Kalevi Louhivuori’s compositions and Sun Trio’s brilliant arrangements involve weaving together acoustic and electronic music, harmonic echoes still floating as new sounds flow out of the trumpet, bass or drums. Improvised? Written? Electronic or avant-garde? Don’t analyse, just sink into each stage of this intriguing route, from Creation - with its surreal, peaceful, lonely mood in which the flow of time is only marked by Olavi Louhivuori’s drums – to Reborn, the closing track that starts in a sober fashion to end with a prodigious musical riot, as if condensing the thousand sounds that become visible while listening to the eight tracks on this album. Yes, actually visible. Because Kalevi Louhivuori, Antti Lötjönen and Olavi Louhivuori’s music is evocative: of images as well as emotions and feelings. Images that, though being fanciful, surreal visions unfolding from sounds, still appear true, real, belonging to that parallel world into which only a certain kind of music can skillfully lead us.

Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic VI: Celtic Roots The concert series “Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic” has set itself the ambition to reflect current developments and shifts in jazz, and in European jazz in particular, ever since it started. A new configuration of musicians is assembled for each concert, the focus is placed on a different theme, and the results have invariably been truly memorable one-off concerts. “Celtic Roots” was another in this line of triumphs. This concert re-traced the paths taken by celtic music as it traversed European culture, and also charted its influence on jazz. Modern celtic music in all its depth and breadth has a continuous tradition which manifestly pre-dates the nineties wave of world music and ethno-music. Turning the clock back again, jazz had also been influenced by folk music long before the revivals of the sixties and seventies. Following the waves of emigration from Ireland and Scotland in the nineteenth century, elements of celtic music were present in the origins of American country music and of the blues, above all in the southern states of the US, but also later in New York.

Track by track, the illustrious group of quite exceptional performers finds myriad ways for tradition and innovation to coalesce, right from the first chant of the bagpipes in Fraser Fifield's “Psalm”. “Willie Murray’s Reel” is given a wholly new character with a fascinating range of guitar sounds. “Lament For The Children” is turned into a multi-layered and constantly changing improvisation. “St. James Infirmary” has a truly celtic final section, and comes across with a new vigour and forcefulness. It is in moments like this that the excitement of the Berlin audience in the hall come through palpably to the listener of the CD. Track listing: 1. Opening 2:27 2. Mole In The Ground 4:30 3.
