This is superarticulate, sparkling and revelatory, with a blistering performance of the Second Piano Trio.” Michael Tumelty – Herald Scotland, 20th September

Much of Giovanni Gabrieli’s music was composed for grand ceremonial occasions. 2015 marks not just the 400th anniversary of the publication of this collection of works from 1615, but also the 500th anniversary of the completion of King’s College Chapel. The Choir celebrates these anniversaries with the first classical album ever to use Dolby’s new Atmos technology, which uses ceiling-mounted speakers to reproduce the acoustics of the Chapel with unprecedented realism. This recording pays homage to one of the most influential musicians of the Venetian Renaissance from within one of the great buildings of the English Renaissance. As well as being principal organist at St Mark’s Basilica, Gabrieli was a prolific composer of sacred vocal and instrumental music. The early brass ensembles for which Gabrieli composed are no longer to be found performing in St Mark’s Basilica, but this tradition is alive and well in Cambridge. The Choir is joined by His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts playing faithful recreations of instruments from Gabrieli’s time. The Choir is one of Britain’s oldest musical institutions, but has always been committed to innovation in pursuit of excellence. This, the first classical album to be mixed and released using Dolby’s new Atmos technology, provides a three-dimensional experience like no other: the new surround sound-encoding includes height information as well as width and depth to offer a truly immersive sound experience. This recording will be released in both SACD and Pure Audio Blu-ray formats. The release will be accompanied by an extensive international press and marketing campaign, including international launch events, as well as a video trailer.

Enjoyed in millions of homes each Christmas eve, 'Carols from King’s' is an enchanting hour and a half of choral worship, beginning with a lone chorister singing Gauntlett’s reverent 'Once in Royal David’s City' and concluding with the triumphant 'Hark! PROKOFIEV: Symphonies No. 4 Op. 112 [rev 1947] & 6 Op.111, Movement from Symphony in G (1902) Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra / Kirill Karabits The last volume of the critically praised Prokofiev Symphony cycle from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under its music director Kirill Karabits. Their recent performance at the BBC Proms of the 5th Symphony was described by The Independent on Sunday as "one of the hits of the summer". This final CD contains the composer’s earliest attempt at a symphony, written in 1902 at the age of just 11. The surviving movement receives its world première recording on this disc. The revised and enlarged version of 4th symphony from 1947 is coupled with the daunting and emotionally charged 6th, which to some represents the greatest of the seven symphonies. "Each of us suffers from wounds that cannot be healed" said the composer of this work to his biographer. Composed during a period of serious illness, the ‘death sentence’ or irregular heart beat depicted by the horns in the opening movement are as striking as the rhythm of Mahler’s 9th, also composed during a similar illness that would soon claim its creator.

SCRIABIN: Symphonies No. 3 'The Divine Poem', No.4 'The Poem of Ecstasy' Valery Gergiev / London Symphony Orchestra

Label: LSO Live File Under: Classical/Orchestral Catalogue No: LSO0771 Barcode: 822231177128 MID Price Format: 1 SACD Packaging: cristal

Valery Gergiev conducts revelatory performances of Scriabin’s Symphony No 3 ‘The Divine Poem’ and Symphony No 4, ‘The Poem of Ecstasy’. This marks the first in a new cycle of Scriabin symphonies, and one of the most significant of all Valery Gergiev’s projects with the London Symphony Orchestra, released during his final tenure as LSO Principal Conductor. Anyone with musical curiosity will welcome the chance to explore such an idiosyncratic composer. Scriabin’s Symphony No 3 was composed not long after the composer had arrived at a philosophy that exalted the individual ego and the senses. The piece, which has also been referred to as a tone poem in three movements, was Scriabin’s attempt to give expression to the evolution of the human spirit. For Scriabin, the finale of his Third Symphony marked a significant moment in his development as a composer, and he wrote that "this was the first time I found light in music… the first time I knew intoxication, flight, the breathlessness of happiness". By 1906 Scriabin had published a poem which set out the ‘philosophical programme’ of a work, which was to become his Fourth Symphony. The work’s title refers to an artistic ecstasy, which is expressed in the music through a beautifully coloured sound-world and harmonic fluidity, culminating in the final section with the revelation of C major. Scriabin was influenced by synesthesia, and associated colours with the various harmonic tones of his atonal scale, while his colour-coded circle of fifths was also influenced by theosophy. Valery Gergiev says of the composer: "Scriabin is a great Russian composer… He’s clearly a composer with his own voice, from his own world. Scriabin came up with very much his own sonority and his ability to hear different colours was legendary. Scriabin should be today understood as a man who was able to create a wonderfully magical musical world, and we just have to give in. We have to be imprisoned by these compositions and the magical powers of the creator."

Valery Gergiev London Symphony Orchestra

Concert Reviews: "[In the Fourth Symphony] Gergiev and his players could revel in some of the most luscious orchestration ever set down on paper, working as one to press the piece steadily towards its vertiginous climax". The Guardian

ADVERTISED in Gramophone & Classical Music with other LSO Live releases to promote Gergiev’s final tenure as Principal Conductor

"I don’t think I’ve seen [Gergiev] smile so much as during Poem of Ecstasy, a work he clearly loves and whose delicate and dance-like spirit he liberated." The Times****

Tenebrae will be launching this new programme of Brahms and Bruckner Motets in the exquisite surroundings and acoustic of St. James’s Church, Spanish Place (Marylebone, London) on Thursday 12th November 2015. Profits from the sale of which will go towards Macmillan Cancer Support to aid their incredible work. Andrew Mellor, who inspired this project, says, “I have worked with Tenebrae for some years now as a sound engineer/producer for their recordings and I’ve never failed to be astonished by their virtuosity and musicianship. I had always hoped that we would record the Brahms and Bruckner Motets, not only works that I love but pieces very suited to the Tenebrae sound. When my father passed away from cancer I wanted to honour his memory by creating something very special that would live on for thousands to enjoy, while at the same time raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support who do amazing work in supporting those living with cancer. The recording sessions were just as we had all hoped, and the concert in November to launch the album gives us all the chance to hear Tenebrae live in one of London’s most beautiful churches.” In association with Classic FM and generously sponsored by Edition Peters Ltd., Tenebrae launched a 'Locus Iste' choir competition to perform with them in the concert. To be in with a chance of winning this once in a lifetime opportunity, choirs had to submit a simple audio recording of Bruckner’s ‘Locus Iste’ to be judged by Tenebrae’s Artistic Director, Nigel Short. Nigel Short adds, “‘Locus Iste’ was probably the very first piece of music by Bruckner I sang when a choir boy and it was a favourite of the whole choir. Its beauty is in its simplicity and understatement and yet, within the short space of this 2 minute piece, Bruckner still manages to venture far and wide harmonically and dynamically, making it something of a little dynamo motet! We are excited to launch the disc together with a guest choir and I look forward to listening to the entries!” Hailed as “one of the country’s most outstanding vocal ensembles” (Evening Standard), award-winning choir Tenebrae blends its passion for singing as if in a large cathedral choir with the breath-taking precision of a chamber ensemble. Tenebrae’s ever-increasing discography has brought about discs for Signum, Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, EMI Classics, LSO Live and Warner Classics, with the choir’s recent recording of Russian Orthodox music being launched on its own label, Bene Arte, receiving glowing reviews and reaching number 1 on the UK Classical Chart.

When Rain, created by the Rosas Company in 2001, entered the Paris Opera Ballet's repertoire ten years later, Director of Dance Brigitte Lefèvre brought a whole dimension of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s world to the Paris Opera, giving dancers and audiences alike the possibility of undertaking a unique visual and auditory kinaesthetic experience. Since the 1980s, the choreographer has continually played a key role in the world of contemporary art, marking the emerging Flemish scene with the imprint of an original language initiated with the New York avant-garde and borne by a quest for composition in all its forms. Parallel to her intense theatrical work, she has also developed an art of minimalist purity through skilfully dynamic choreography seeking "to burst into life” in a kaleidoscope of perpetually changing forms. Set to Music for Eighteen Musicians, Steve Reich's major score composed in 1976, Rain embodies the culmination of a dance form drawing its own spatial polyphony from the mathematical principles of musical composition, a polyphony which also materialises on the floor, where the infinite trajectories of the dancers criss-cross like brightly coloured pick-up sticks. Music and dance become one until, breathless and exhausted, they discover the motifs of an exhilaratingly profound work concealed within their own inner mysteries where freedom and constraint, rigour and profusion, unity and reduction all rhyme with each other. Rain also shares genetic links with other Rosas works. The choreographer likes to weave the discreet threads of an uninterrupted dialogue between them. Thus it is that Rain forms a diptych with Drumming, a long piece created in 1998 to another score by Steve Reich, which embraces formats at once symmetrical and yet opposing: one part all spirals, the other more angular. In the same way, in its work on breathing, conveyed by the ebb and flow of the music, Rain evokes some of the literary materials used for In Real Time, a dramatic work created in 2000 and inspired by Kirsty Gunn's novel Rain, which describes a young woman’s attempt to save her drowning brother. As such, this piece offers an intimate view of the thought mechanisms at work in Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s creative process. One thinks of a “rain dance” that is both a festival of torrential, life-infused motion and a timeless, incantatory quest for the golden number and its perfect proportions. DVD Duration: 74 min. SCHUBERT: Sonata No. 19 in C min D958, 4 Impromptus op.posth. 142 D935 Nicolai Lugansky For his first Schubert recording, Nikolai Lugansky has chosen one sonata and four impromptus from the late output of the iconic Viennese composer. Schubert composed his last three piano sonatas in Vienna during the summer of 1828, shortly before his death on 19 November at the age of 31. The first of the three, in C minor D958, is the most impassioned, and the power and dark energy emerging from its four movements are reminiscent of Beethoven. After the latter’s death on 26 March 1827, Schubert felt liberated from the weight of idolatry and composed such masterpieces as these final sonatas, the Lieder cycle 'Winterreise', and the 'Impromptu's for piano, the last four of which are also featured on this recording. The elegance and technical prowess of Nikolai Lugansky’s playing are perfectly suited to these masterpieces. He records exclusively for the Naïve-Ambroisie label.

“remarkable artistry… In some ways, his virtuosic playing bears the hallmarks of the Russian Romantic heritage: rich singing tone, depth of sound, roomy expressive freedom. But as he showed on Tuesday night in a program of Schubert and Tchaikovsky at the 92nd Street Y, Mr. Lugansky, 42, is a keenly intelligent pianist who values textural clarity. Almost like a scientist, he searches out inner details and strives to convey the structural underpinnings of a piece, even if this means adopting a measure of reserve… Mr. Lugansky played with crystalline clarity and lilt in beautifully understated performances that allowed wistful ele-ments of the music to emerge." This CD is one of Skip Sempé’s rare Bach recordings and brings the listener ever-closer to both new listening experiences and a re-discovery of some of Bach’s masterpieces in alternative versions. The choice of two superb harpsichords, with contrasting timbres - one based on a German instrument and the other on a French model, but by the same maker - creates a unique alchemy of sound. With this project of Bach transcriptions, Skip Sempé and Olivier Fortin - two of the top harpsichordists today demonstrate once again that the score is only the beginning of an interpretation. Based on an assortment of Bach’s abundant repertoire, the programme provides contrast after contrast, fully exploiting the rare and opulent sonority of two harpsichords. Sempé and Fortin have also been heard in two-harpsichord transcriptions of works by Rameau, Scarlatti and the Elizabethan virginalists. In Bach’s works, the overwhelming evidence for multiple harpsichord performances is the concerti for two, three and four, harpsichords, most of which are themselves transcriptions of earlier works. Pianists in the 19th and early 20th centuries often played orchestral repertoire on two pianos at home to enjoy music that they could not otherwise access. This long-awaited re-issue [from Astrée 1998] marked a new celebration of the harpsichord and of fresh, inventive Bach interpretation when it was initially released. It is now re-released concurrent with the 2015 Terpsichore Festival in Paris, of which Skip Sempé is the artistic director. Harpsichord connoisseurs will be delighted with the remastering of this recording - a new chance to discover the remarkable liberty of interpretation and expression and the overwhelming sonority of the two remarkable harpsichords.

Act III of François-Frédéric Guy's Beethoven Project. On the programme: Beethoven's complete music for cello and piano with cellist Xavier Phillips, recorded by Nicolas Bartholomée at the Arsenal in Metz. In 2008 Guy embarked on a major Beethoven project that has included recording and performing in concert all 32 Beethoven Sonatas and the 5 Piano Concertos. Guy is a dedicated chamber musician and he regularly performs Beethoven’s chamber music for strings and piano as well, with Tedi Papavrami and Xavier Phillips. As part of the Beethoven project, Guy has performed the complete cycle of 32 Sonatas in Washington, Paris, Monaco and recently at the Festival Berlioz in La Côte-Saint-André (August 2013). Born in Paris, Xavier Phillips started playing the cello at the age of 6. His encounter with Mstislav Rostropovitch proved especially fruitful since it marked the beginning of a long collaboration during which Xavier Phillips received the guidance and encouragement of the master cellist. His eclectic and varied discography has been warmly welcomed by the critics. His last recording – dedicated to Dutilleux “Tout un monde lointain” – received tremendous reviews and was nominated three times for the Grammy Awards 2015. Xavier Phillips plays on a Matteo Gofriller cello from 1710. 'François-Frédéric Guy's talent shines forth in the absolute mastery of the Beethovenian corpus, borne by a visionary, overall conception.' Le Monde 'Xavier Phillips is an artist very much in the Rostropovich vein: rapt, patrician, with a technique that knows no difficulties.' The Washington Post

“The story goes that, when I was about two years old, my mother found me humming a Bach melody that she had been practicing a few days earlier. My own memories of Bach begin from the time when I started to practice my first solo Sonata in G minor, when I was about seven years old. The piece had been assigned to me, as all repertoire was at that age, and I had no idea what to do with it. Over the years, I have come to realize that, in studying Bach, one’s learning never stops. To my thinking – and I’m sure most other violinists would agree – these sonatas and partitas for solo violin are monuments of the literature, for many reasons. Their study opens up and trains the ear for more precise and ever-deeper listening. One learns to understand the relationship between the various notes, in addition to just hearing the notes themselves. Indeed, I find that I have learned more from studying these Bach compositions than from any other music. It is an almost miraculous feeling that envelops me when I am fully engaged with these musical masterworks. These works are larger than life – they stretch the artistic and technical responses that one can have toward a piece of music. Bach’s music is always “right” for any circumstance. I have been able to present these pieces anywhere: to play for refugees in an outdoor setting, in the intensive care units at hospitals, in great concert halls, in places of worship, for celebratory occasions or remembrances and in any corner of any country in which I have ever performed. Bach travels well. The music does not require any special equipment or conditions. It must simply be played and heard, and invariably, with every committed performance, listeners young or old manage to be as transported as is any beguiled performer.” Taken from Midori’s booklet notes ALSO AVAILABLE BY MIDORI ON ONYX: ONYX4084 Bloch Violin Sonata No.2, Janacek, Shostakovich Violin Sonatas Adverts in Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine

“Some years ago, my teacher Cécile Ousset revealed to me that she is the owner of her teacher’s copy of Debussy’s Préludes. This score is simply overwhelming: remarks, phrasings, fingerings are written in different colours and layers over every note and every chord, with comments and remarks on even the tiniest details. In some places, there are fine black letters which are almost impossible to decipher: apparently, the handwriting of Claude Debussy. For me, as a young musician, this has been an important lesson on how details need to be taken seriously. I have the feeling that the music of ‘Monsieur Croche’ especially is revealed when this degree of subtlety is achieved...His works challenge the performer in myriad ways: they are technically demanding, but in addition to virtuosic pianism, Debussy requires an equally virtuosic handling of colours, shading and character. In 20th century music, this is not always a matter of course.” Francesco Piemontesi Press reviews for Francesco Piemontesi performing the Préludes: “His playing took the breath away. He combined the black and white notes of Brouillards to create soft grey tonalities, and went on to dazzle us with a won-derful range of effects in which a flawless technique was put to the service of some very original interpretations.” The Independent

STRAUSS: Don Quixote Op. 35, Also Sprach Zarathustra Op. 30 Großes Spielhaus, Salzburg Festival, 30/8/1964

Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Herbert von Karajan One man who appreciated the late Karl Böhm, and who had invited him to perform during his own time as Festival Director at Salzburg, was Herbert von Karajan. He can be heard now in a programme from his middle period that demonstrates the power of his interpretive art – an art that today seems timeless in comparison. He conducts two tone poems by Richard Strauss. In 'Also sprach Zarathustra' both the maestro and his orchestra offer an unbridled testament to their prowess. The variation work 'Don Quixote' is an even bigger challenge (though the artfulness of its form is just as artfully concealed), and it offers far more humour, too. Strauss might mock his critics in 'Zarathustra', but in 'Quixote' he offers an even more raucous commentary in the shape of a bleating flock of sheep. The soloists Pierre Fournier and Rudolf Streng admirably master the challenges of their parts and whilst Karajan’s live performances are less perfect than his studio productions, they offer far more, even in matters of his legendary orchestral sound.

With conductors, a glance back just a few decades seems to take us into another world altogether. One of that extinct breed of conducting greats was surely Karl Böhm. A native of Graz, he became known and loved in his lifetime as an arch-representative of a form of music-making that was specifically Austrian – in fact, specifically Viennese. Naturally, Salzburg was also an important venue for him. Orfeo released Böhm's final Salzburg concert of 30 August 1980 with its all-Mozart programme (ORFEO C891141, with Maurizio Pollini as soloist) and are privileged to be able to release his penultimate Salzburg concert, of 17 August in that same year. Böhm died just a few months later in 1981. He can be heard here with an all-Beethoven programme comprising the 2nd and 7th symphonies, naturally partnered by his Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Even just listening to this concert at home you can feel its special ambiance – with the broad, insistent seriousness of the conductor’s tempi and the passionate response of the orchestra that was so devoted to him. This was a labour of love.

The world of the liederabend or song recital, seems to have been a more common aspect of our musical life only a few years ago, even if we don’t pay too much attention to the occasional lament today about the decline in the art of singing (a lament no doubt as old as singing itself). But from today’s perspective it is indisputably impressive how Hermann Prey, the successful opera singer, here offers a Schubert song recital grouped around the 'Schwanengesang', and all done with unimpeachable taste, mastery and seriousness, and interpreted in full possession of his enviable vocal powers

In a time when we have grown accustomed to the continual emergence of ever more, newly acclaimed wonder violinists, both male and female, it is all the more striking to hear recordings of the great violinists from just a few decades ago. Unlike today, they possessed much individuality of character, and were recognisably different in their style, technique, tone and musical approach. One of the most distinctive representatives of a violin 'school', of a kind that no longer exists today, was the great Belgian violinist Arthur Grumiaux. He had a smooth, supple tone, a wonderful legato and was famous for his Mozart and his Bach (he was also, incidentally, a highly competent pianist!). Orfeo's live concert recording offers a typical example of his art in concert programming, for here he contrasts two Classical sonatas with one work each from the Neoclassical and Impressionist periods. There is early Beethoven, then Brahms, Stravinsky and Debussy – one Classicist and three variants on Classicism – and all perfectly rounded off with a Ravel encore that is as virtuosic as it is elegant.

Heinrich ISAAC: Missa Misericordias Domini & Motets

With Heinrich Isaac, Giuseppe Maletto and Cantica Symphonia turn their attention to one of the most influential Franco-Flemish composers of the Renaissance, presenting a hitherto unrecorded mass setting, his 'Missa Misericordias Domini', and a selection of outstanding and substantial motets. Isaac was one of the leading composers who, born and trained in Flanders, took up employ in Italy: in his case he worked at the sumptuous court of Lorenzo de’ Medici in Florence at the end of the 15th century (on the latter’s death Isaac was then taken on by the Emperor Maximilian I). This new recording from Glossa offers a rare chance today of appreciating the music of this extraordinarily prolific composer, often unfairly (as he was in his own time) obscured by the shadow cast by his near-contemporary Josquin Desprez, in interpretations which the sextet of long-experienced singers of Cantica Symphonia handle with typical skill. If the 'Missa Misericordias Domini' ultimately owes its thematic material to an Italian secular song, a frottola (and Guido Magnano, in his booklet essay, maps out Isaac’s biography in Florence to explain this choice), the motets here – including O decus Ecclesiae, Quae est ista and Inviolata – are resolutely Marian devotional works; some recorded also for the first time. The established special colouring of Cantica Symphonia’s work is maintained here by the well-considered presence in some of the motets of instruments of the time, notably, fiddles, sackbutts and slide trumpets.

Jos van Immerseel is one of the leading representatives of historical performance practice today. Alongside his great commitment to Renaissance and Baroque music, he has consistently broadened his view of the classical and romantic repertoire as well. With the Ensemble Anima Eterna, founded by him in 1987 and performing on historical instruments, he set new standards with recordings of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Ravel, Rimsky-Korsakoff, Poulenc and, most recently, Orff. On the occasion of Jos van Immerseel's 70th birthday in November 2015, this box offers a backward glance at the time when Jos van Immerseel, as the winner of many international competitions and prizes, still focussed primarily on keyboard instruments. During the late 1970s the pupil of Flor Peeters, Eugène Traey and Kenneth Gilbert began his collaboration with the Belgian label Accent, resulting in a series of solo piano recordings with works of Clementi, Mozart and Beethoven which can still stand comparison today. Alongside this purely soloistic contribution, Jos van Immerseel was also much in demand as a chamber music partner for Octophorus, the oboist Paul Dombrecht and the countertenor René Jacobs. This retrospective is rounded off with a final Accent recording from 1986 with Rossini's 'Petite Messe Solennelle' (in the chamber-music version), directed by Immerseel from the piano.

Beethoven: Complete Works for Piano Trio Vol. II Piano Trio No. 2 in G major Op. 1/2, Piano Trio No. 5 in D major Op. 70/1

Swiss Piano Trio After a successful start to the new complete edition of the Beethoven Piano Trios with the Swiss Piano Trio, Audite now presents the second volume of the series, again highlighting the contrast between early and later Trios. In the early Piano Trio, Op. 1 No. 2, Beethoven incorporates the contrapuntal compositional techniques that he had studied extensively with Johann Georg Albrechtsberger concurrently with the composition of the Trios. With the Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70 No. 1, composed 13 years later, Beethoven creates a sombre mood using strong contrasting harmony and melody. The eerie sound effects, unheard of until this time and only made possible by the advances made in instrument manufacturing around 1800, substantiated the name 'Ghost Trio' added posthumously. Both works bear witness to the inexhaustible variety of Beethoven's musical ideas.

Works for Flute & Piano of the 20th Century Anne-Cathérine Heinzmann With this CD, Audite presents its second duo production with Anne-Cathérine Heinzmann and Thomas Hoppe. It contains sonatinas and suites by five 20th-century composers. In their respective aesthetics, each composer shares the ability to use forms and models of music history as inspiration for his own modern musical language. Existentially, they shared a common fate: all were persecuted by the National Socialists. Some were murdered in concentration camps and others fled to continue their lives in exile. Leo Smit, Alexandre Tansman and Erwin Schulhoff were inspired by French music, including Claude Debussy’s sense for melodic elaboration and the openness towards jazz shown by the Parisian musical scene. For Günter Raphael, classical clarity and romantic differentiation were decisive ideals; in his late 'Intermezzi', Hans Gál looked back at his artistic origins in the circle surrounding Johannes Brahms. These five intensive, virtuoso works shed light on facets of an age to which attention is rarely paid.
