“Fabio Bonizzoni’s recordings of Handel’s Italian cantatas are the finest on disc, and he brings the same light, speedy touch and acute insight to the duets … [here] it’s the entwined brilliance of Invernizzi and de Liso, the flash and sparkle of their voices in proximity, that is the disc’s keenest pleasure.”

David Bates leads La Nuova Musica in 'Sacrifices', a programme of intensely dramatic oratorios from the mid Baroque. Three poignant tales of denail and sacrifice: St Peter's denial of Christ; Abraham's [narrowly averted] sacrifice of his son Isaac; and the Old Testament story of Jepthe, the hero commander who, before leading the Israelites into battle against the Ammonites, vows to God that if he is victorious, he will sacrifice the first living thing he meets upon his return. Unfortunately it is his darling daughter, who dances out to greet him with cymbals and flutes. Jepthe must honour his vow... In a dramatic lament, the daughter [she is never named] asks the mountains to bewail her fate - they answer in echoes; this is followed by one of the most moving choruses in all 17th C music. Belgian soprano Sophie Juncker is the daughter [and one to watch]. La Nuova Musica is established in the UK with regular appearances at the London Handel, the Spitalfields and Aldeburgh International festivals, and has achieved worldwide recognition and outreach through a five-record deal with harmonia mundi USA. Its debut recording for the label, released in March 2012, a world premiere on CD of the 1712 version of Handel’s 'Il pastor Fido', was proclaimed as the arrival of “an exceptionally talented young British ensemble” (Opera magazine). A second release, of Handel and Vivaldi 'Dixit Dominus', followed in 2013. After its recent debut at Wigmore Hall – performing Francesco Conti’s 'L’Issipile' with an all-star cast – The Guardian acclaimed the group as going “from strength to strength”. A disc of Handel, Bononcini and Ariosti arias, with countertenor Lawrence Zazzo, will be released on October 13th. “The vocal consort sang beautifully ... Directing from the organ ... David Bates favoured slow tempi and luxuriant textures.” The Independent, review of the Spitalfields Festival concert

Here is a fresh new recording which, enterprisingly, couples it with a performance of Tchaikovsky’s original score.” Daniel Jaffe, Tchaikovsky Nutcracker Feature, BBC Music Magazine- Christmas 2013 "every number brings with it an utterly inspired transformation, be it the vigorous swagger and swirl of ‘Peanut Brittle Brigade’ or the intoxicating sinuous and sultry ‘Arabesque Cookie’… Suffice to say, Steven Richman and Harmonie Ensemble/New York have a ball and their commendably sassy rendering is preceded by a similarly buoyant and highly personable account of the original concert suite which has one marvelling anew at Tchaikovsky’s vernally captivating invention and consummate mastery of orchestral poise.” Andrew Achenbach, Gramophone – October 2013 HMU907492 Gershwin by Grofé “Raw, brash, swung with relish…Remarkable playing.” Andrew McGregor, BBC RADIO 3 “A truly fascinating disc. There's the remarkable clarinet/saxophone playing of 90-year-old Al Gallodoro for a start - a member of the original Paul Whiteman Orchestra who died shortly after making these recordings that feature him playing the famous glissando opening of ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ with pianist Lincoln Mayorga as soloist and the excellent Harmonie Ensemble of New York. Steven Richman conducts these recreations of the original Whiteman Band orchestrations… in versions that might be new to modern ears.” The Scotsman

Robert KYR: The Cloud of Unknowing, Songs of the Soul Conspirare Craig Hella Johnson leads Conspirare, soprano Estelテュ Gomez, baritone David Farwig, and the Victoria Bach Festival string orchestra in this first recording of three choral works by Robert Kyr (b. 1952). Exploring the relationship between human and divine love, his cantatas 'The Cloud of Unknowing' (2013) and 'Songs of the Soul' (2011) transfixed audiences and critics alike when Conspirare premiered them. The texts are by the 16th century Spanish mystics St Teresa of テ」ila and St John of the Cross, some sung in Spanish, some in English translation. The prelude to the two cantatas, the a cappella anthem, 'The Singer's Ode' is reminiscent of RVW's 'Ode to Music'. Robert Kyr is among the most prolific composers of his generation, having composed 12 symphonies, 3 chamber symphonies, 3 violin concerti, and much chamber music, in addition to numerous vocal works. His choral music is distinguished by a warmly compelling lyricism, as well as by a contrapuntal mastery that arises from his love of early music, especially the work of Dufay, Josquin Des Prez, and above all, Bach窶ヲ

ADVERTISED IN BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE, August issue
250 years after his death, Jean-Philippe Rameau continues to fascinate, as is shown by the number of new productions of his operas scheduled for 2014 and beyond. However, the Dijon-born composer also owes some of his current popularity to the passionate advocacy of William Christie: this sumptuous box set presents the critically-acclaimed Rameau recordings he made for harmonia mundi in the 1980s and 1990s. Its selection of opéra-ballet, tragédie lyrique and harpsichord pieces on 10 cds, many unavailable for some time, highlights the multiple facets of Rameau's œuvre, masterfully interpreted by the American Baroque pioneer so completely at home in French music. A must! "a first-rate performance of one of Rameau's most endearing stage works; Christie's control of his forces, his convincing pacing of the piece—the Prologue and first entree sounded hurried and unsettled in the Aix-en-Provence production that preceded the recording—and his feeling for colour, gesture and rhythm contribute towards making this perhaps his finest achievement on disc, so far. His choir is lively and well-disciplined and the instrumentalists of Les Arts Florissants play with greater finesse than I have previously heard. The booklet contains full texts in French, English and German and the music is vividly recorded in a pleasing acoustic. All in all, a considerable achievement which should provide readers with enduring pleasure." Nicholas Anderson, Gramophone Feb 1992 [Les Indes Galantes] "Christie's performance does seem to me to have the stronger solo vocal cast, and this applies to smaller roles as well as the principal ones—the sopranos Veronique Gens and Sandrine Piau are both outstanding...Christie.. unquestionably gives us new and subtle insights to the opera and does, I believe, more convincingly realize the element of tragedy, above all in the First Act." Nicholas Anderson, Gramophone July 1993 [Castor]

JORDI SAVALL INTERVIEW & REVIEW in the YORKSHIRE POST, to coincide with his appearance at the York Early Music Festival 10th July, broadcast by the BBC
DVD: MESSE ET MOTETS POUR LA VIERGE Canticum in honorem Beate Virginis Mariae (H.400) Nuit, très Lentement (H.416) Stabat Mater pour des religieuses (H.15) Litanies de la Vierge à 6 voix et 2 dessus de violes (H.83) Missa Assumpta Est Maria (H.11) Filmed on October 9, 2004 at the Royal Chapel in Versailles To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the foundation of Le Concert des Nations by Montserrat Figueras and myself in 1989, we are now delighted to be able to release on the Alia Vox label an SACD version of Charpentier’s 'Canticum ad Beatam Virginem Mariam' in what was the ensemble’s first recording. This re-release is accompanied by a DVD of the recording of the concert given on 9th October, 2004, at the Royal Chapel at Versailles, and a second SACD featuring the live recording of 'Missa Assumpta est Maria' at that concert, as well as the instrumental interlude 'Nuit' taken from the 'Pastorale In nativitatem Domini canticum' and the new recording of the 'Concert pour quatre parties de Violes' at the collegiate church of Cardona on 7th May, 2013. This is also an opportunity for us to pay homage to one of the greatest musicians of his generation on the occasion of the 310th anniversary of his death. Let us not forget that, together with Purcell in England, Charpentier brought about the transition from modality to tonality, enriching his works with poignant chromaticism, false relations and dissonances, which more often than not arose from that very conflict between tonality and modality. Thus, the genius of Charpentier retains its relevance and eloquence today, thanks to his highly individual way of incorporating certain transalpine influences into the French tradition; all this, together with his profound spirituality, makes his music a perfect example of the “goûts réunis.” JORDI SAVALL, Seoul, 29th April, 2014 Booklet: English, French, German, Italian, Castilian, Catalan

Label: Onyx Classics File Under: Classical/Orchestral Catalogue No: ONYX4124 Barcode: 880040412427 NORMAL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra Sascha Goetzel [conductor] Sascha Goetzel, Music Director of the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra will be on In tune on Radio 3 for a live interview on 28 July, the day before the orchestra's UK debut at the Proms, and the day that the new CD is released Andrew MacGregor who attended the sessions in Istanbul will devote part of Summer CD Review near the Prom date to the new CD, with interviews and music recorded for a mini documentary he made in February.
The Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Sascha Goetzel, have over the course of the past five years, built a formidable reputation as one of the most creative and exciting orchestras in Europe. Two earlier CDs for ONYX were extremely well received by critics around the world and the new release will not disappoint. Since it was founded, BIPO has worked to develop not only as an orchestra, but as a showcase for music from different traditions – a multicultural mosaic where each little stone is carefully placed with the utmost respect for its neighbour, making a unique contribution to its surroundings. This new recording explores the eastern musical roots of Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, identifying elements from the eastern side of the Bosphorus which have impinged on the Western cultural background of these composers. For the first time the BIPO introduce original oriental instruments on a Scheherezade recording: between the first and second movements the oud plays a traditional melody; the violin solo recitatives are accompanied by the qanin instead of the harp; throughout the work a variety of Turkish and Arabian percussion instruments are delicately incorporated to support Rimsky-Korsakov's Arabic rhythm-writing. "For fifty years the Edinburgh Quartet has been one of the leading chamber ensembles of the UK," wrote the quartet’s patron James MacMillan on the occasion of their 50th anniversary in 2010. "I feel proud to be associated with them as they enter their second half-century under the dynamic leadership of Tristan Gurney, providing some of the most exciting performances in the business." Exciting is certainly the word to describe these marvellously idiomatic, intensely virtuosic readings of MacMillan’s own music. Spanning his career from 1982 to 2011, they provide three snapshots of his evolving style: an intriguing tissue of Wagnerian referentiality; a burst of youthful energy with touches of the visionary; and the sovereign integration of folk and discursive elements in String Quartet No 3. A moving short tribute, 'For Sonny', shows another side to this ceaselessly inventive composer’s output. The Edinburgh Quartet was founded in 1960 and quickly became established as one of Britain’s foremost chamber ensembles. It achieved international recognition after winning the Contemporary Prize at the Evian-les-Bains String Quartet Competition and has since toured extensively across Europe, the Far East, North and South America and the Middle East, as well as appearing regularly at venues across the UK. The Quartet has always been a champion of new music and has worked with many important and prolific composers of our age including James MacMillan, Michael Tippett and Howard Blake. Label: Signum Classics File Under: Classical/Choral Catalogue No: SIGCD381 Barcode: 635212038123 NORMAL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: cristal BBC Singers Rex Lawson [pianola] David Hill, James Morgan [conductors]
Gabriel Jackson was Associate Composer with the BBC Singers from 2010 to 2013 and this disc collects the very best of this unique collaboration between composer and professional choral ensemble. The central work 'Airplane Cantata', premiered by the Singers in 2011, is an evocative tribute to the pioneers of flight and aircraft design, combining texts from early newsreels and pilots' journals, and featuring renowned pianola player Rex Lawson. It is one of the first full length pieces written especially for the pianola since the 1930s. Gabriel states that in writing this piece he satisfied his obsession with aviation: “…the technology, the bravery and daring of pilots, the aesthetic beauty of aircraft, the transcendence of flying – and when thinking about what a piece for voices and pianola might be about, I was very struck by the fact that the (brief) heyday of the pianola coincided with the pioneering years of aviation.” The variety of texts used includes eye-witness accounts by Louis Blériot and the musings of Amelia Earhart. The seven-movement work makes full use of the amazing keyboard dexterity possible with the pianola’s virtuosic resources and contains the instrumental Toccata Aeronautica, a staggering showpiece movement for pianola alone, giving full opportunity to show what it can achieve, but which a pianist, restricted to ten fingers, could not. World-renowned pianolist, Rex Lawson, prepared the piano rolls making use of a computer programme which translates staff notation into a machine to punch the rolls, which he devised himself. Rex is a leading exponent of the pianola and works tirelessly to promote this once hugely-popular, but now rather misunderstood instrument. Gabriel Jackson won his third British Composer Award for 'Airplane Cantata' in 2012; his Choral Symphony, also included here, was shortlisted in 2013. This disc follows in Signum's popular series of recordings showcasing the work of the BBC singers and their associate composers. Previous discs include works by Judith Bingham and Edward Cowie. Morton FELDMAN: String Quartet No. 1, Structures, Three Pieces for String Quartet FLUX Quartet
Label: Mode Records File Under: Classical/Chamber music Catalogue No: mode269/70 Barcode: 764593026921 NORMAL Price Format: 2 CD + DVD Packaging: deluxe slipcase FLUX Quartet
The FLUX Quartet follow their acclaimed, best-selling recording of Feldman’s monumental 6-hour String Quartet No. 2 with this release, thus completing their cycle of Feldman’s string quartets, the first ensemble to do so. String Quartet No. 1 is one of Feldman’s earliest long-scale pieces. Unlike other recordings FLUX respects Feldman’s tempo and all of the repeats, making it the longest recording of the piece. Each of these string quartets inhabits a distinctive world, attuned to the incredible detail of tiny complexities of sound. Feldman gives attention to things one might otherwise overlook: no sound is too ordinary, too small, or too plain – in fact the small, ordinary, plain sounds are given a certain radiance, a renewed and rich inner life. 'Structure's (1951) presents us with a fragile and extremely delicate texture, almost transparent at times, like a finely woven gauze, with slightly varied repetitions, like undulations, like breathing. The Op. 61 with Cluytens remains his finest and the legendary trio he formed with Lev Oborin and Svjatoslav Knuschevitzky outperforms his last meeting with Richter and Rostropovich. TCHAIKOVSKY: Moscow: Coronation Cantata, Voyevoda: Symphonic Ballad Op. 78 1812 Overture, The Tempest: Symphonic Fantasy Op. 18 Nikolaï Golovanov Nikolai Golovanov [1891-1953] was known in the West as the 'Russian Furtwängler' in the '40s and '50s. A visionary conductor who transformed even the most pedestrian pieces with ecstatic fervour - his hyper-dramatic 1812 Overture is frighteningly intense - he was officially written out of Soviet history and forgotten after being purged in 1952 and he conveniently died the following year. Fortunately Praga Digitals have remastered these mythical Tchaikovsky readings from 1952, including the 'Moscow' cantata commissioned for the coronation of Alexander III, given here in a 'Sovietised' text by Machistov erasing all imperial and religious references: a pearl of epic Russian archaism built of a flamboyant splendour. This hybrid SACD includes the 1812 Overture without artillery, the rare 'Voyevoda', plus Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' in its original edition. Resurrected icons by one of the greatest talents to ever hold a baton.

"Gabriella Tucci sang Aïda more frequently than any other role she attempted at the Met (39 performances)...What compels the house audience to long applause is the lengthy, beautifully sustained final note of [‘O patria mia’] and, even more than that, her leisurely and secure ascent to the top C at the aria’s climax – she takes it at the prescribed piano dynamic and crescendos as marked in the score. It is a lovely effect, perhaps the truest rendering of this fearsome moment on the broadcasts….in the end, a Corelli performance remains most notable for its feast of plangent, richly colored tone.” Paul Jackson, SIGN-OFF FOR THE OLD MET, pp.380-81 Irene Dalis, before her retirement from the stage in 1977, was a principal artist at New York’s Metropolitan Opera for 20 consecutive seasons, appeared regularly with Covent Garden, Berlin, Hamburg, Bayreuth and other major opera houses in Europe and the U. S. and was distinguished by the range and large number of roles in her repertoire. By the end of her career she had performed in every major opera house from Naples to San Francisco, and had 44 roles in her repertoire. Recognised from the beginning as a major dramatic talent, she was most often engaged to sing operas by Verdi, Wagner, and Strauss, eventually performing every major dramatic mezzo-soprano role by these operatic giants. Dubbed the 'Prince of tenors', Corelli possessed handsome features and a charismatic stage presence which endeared him to audiences. He had a long and fruitful partnership with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City between 1961 and 1975. Associated in particular with the spinto and dramatic tenor roles of the Italian repertory, he was celebrated universally for his powerhouse voice, electrifying top notes, clear timbre, a very elegant and passionate singing and remarkable performances. Opera News stated that Corelli's lowered-larynx technique "resulted in [a] cavernous sound even in high-flying passages, where it gained brilliance. Regulating the breath pressure, the tenor was able to reduce this sound while retaining the core of the voice in a diminuendo, or even a morendo on a high B-flat, the effect requested by Verdi at the end of 'Celeste Aida'."

The third volume of radio recordings with the Amadeus Quartet is dedicated to works of its eponym. From the very beginning, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s string quartets were a matter of the heart for the Amadeus Quartet. During the ensemble’s long career, which lasted for nearly 40 years, the great majority of its concert programmes contained at least one work by Mozart. It is not widely known that the Amadeus Quartet made studio recordings for the Berlin broadcasting corporation RIAS every year for nearly two decades. These previously unreleased Mozart recordings from the archives of Deutschlandradio Kultur, the legal successor to RIAS, were made during the quartet’s first ten years. They feature eight of the ten great string quartets written during Mozart’s mature period and show the ensemble at a very high technical and musical level, even at that early stage of its career. The great attention to detail and highly controlled form, in combination with great expression, create the prerequisite for musical spontaneity. These recordings are also of particular interest as they document the Amadeus Quartet at different levels in its reading of Mozart. In the first studio recordings of 1950 and 1951 the ensemble’s surprisingly unusual and experimental interpretational approach opened up hitherto unknown expressive possibilities. This edition is complemented by recordings of Mozart’s four great string quintets. The second viola part is played by the South-African-born Cecil Aronowitz. He was occasionally referred to as the fifth member of the Amadeus Quartet as he was nearly always engaged when a second viola was needed. Three of the four string quintets were recorded in the studio in one single recording session in 1953 – given the high musical quality of these tapes, this is proof of the extraordinary standard of the ensemble, able to lay down a recording more or less straight away. Another peak is the recording of Mozart’s clarinet quintet with Heinrich Geuser, one of the leading clarinettists of his time. With this CD, Audite present the second volume in their complete recording of Robert Schumann‘s orchestral works. The series includes all the symphonies (with both versions of the Fourth) as well as all the overtures and concertos. The Second and Third Symphonies, according to the usual numbering, passed through contrasting histories of reception. Whereas the ‘Rhenish’ remained relatively popular, the C major Symphony was received by contemporaries as trend-setting, but receded into the background from the late nineteenth century onwards. At this time, criticism was primarily levelled at its instrumentation, which had still been praised after its premiere. Heinz Holliger and the WDR Symphony Orchestra have recorded the works with an orchestra of the same size that was available to Schumann. In so doing, they not only uncover the sonic ideal of the composer, but also its consistent and convincing realisation. Holliger‘s performances draw on a lifetime study of Schumann‘s music, thought, personality and fate. His approach imparts lightness and lucidity to these opulent scores through a hierarchical balance of parts, delicately gradated dynamics and invigorating tempos. The widespread image of this romantic composer as a weak orchestrator receives a refreshing and well-grounded correction. Pleased with the reception of his quartets from the Parisian public, Telemann completed an edition of six new quartets subsequently appointed 'Pariser Quartett'. These contrast with the first set in their decidedly French style. In chamber formation Les Ombres explore the unique style of these jewels of baroque music. “The performances match the charm and vigour of the music, Les Ombres playing with a refined intensity made all the more delicious by a melancholy burr…the recorded sound exhibits a resonant intimacy that is ideal for this repertoire.” William Yeoman, Gramophone, May 2011

LOCATELLI: 24 Caprices for solo violin Gabriel Tchalik A watershed in the violin repertoire, recorded for the first time in its complete original version, edited by Albert Dunning and published by Schott, which has fully restored its exceptional character, the 24 Caprices by Pietro Antonio Locatelli are unique in terms of both their form and their content. Taken from 'L'Arte del Violino' Op.III published in 1733 in Amsterdam, the Caprices are placed at the end of the external movements of the 12 Concertos which make up the collection. They are the written cadenzas from each movement. Locatelli specified in the heading of the score, that these Caprices can be played independently of the Opus III concertos. They are autonomous pieces which have all the characteristics of the cadenza: a very free form and a highly inventive unparalleled virtuosity, laying the basis for modern violin playing techniques. Locatelli had to have a violin built especially for him, which had a longer fingerboard than is found on today's baroque-made instruments and it is to pay homage to their modernity that this recording has been made on a modern instrument, which allows all the effects imagined by Locatelli to be expressed. The technique and musicality of Gabriel Tchalik, a young and talented Franco-Russian violinist, shine here.

We can hear, too, why Schumann’s generation praised him highly. Here is a Classical master on the cusp of the Romantic era, original in instrumentation and technique and subtle in his harmonies. For several decades now, the Consortium Classicum has been recognised as one of the outstanding chamber ensembles of a variable formation. They are joined in each septet by pianist Florian Uhlig and in Op. 114 by the ensemble’s 'spiritus rector' of many years, Dieter Klöcker on clarinet. Trobar & Joglar Alla Francesca The programme presented on this disc raises a fundamental issue concerning the historical transmission of the medieval lyric in Occitan and northern French: the essential role of the jongleurs alongside the troubadours and trouvères [poets]. Almost all the texts sung here are in the langue d'oc or Occitan, the language of the troubadours. These poets have a common language in the art they call 'trobar'. The theme of love is central: love betrayed, love that has gone cold, love so crazy that inspires one to sing nonsense lyrics and compose melodies to doomed love. Here mingle sung and instrumental pieces and the texts belong to various genres and highlight different styles. The term troubadour relates to the image of the jongleur, a word which derives from the Latin 'joculator[em]', the name coming from 'joc'[um], meaning play or sport. From antiquity a joculator was regarded as a person of ill repute and was criticised by the Church, which placed him in the same category as prostitutes. 'Trobar' was thus associated with 'joglar'. This is the 16th recording from Alla Francesca, founded in the 1990s as a chamber ensemble devoted to medieval music in all its diversity.

Pierre de la RUE: Requiem, Missa de Beata Virgine Ensemble Officium Wilfried Rombach
Pierre de la Rue's 'Missa pro defunctis' is one of the earliest polyphonic settings of the requiem and became the best-known work of this genre during the Renaissance. The impressively low range of parts of the Mass vividly represents the position of the sinner knocking at heaven's gate. Alongside this is la Rue's 'Missa de Beata Virgine', in which the missing Proprium parts of the Mass have been completed by Gregorian chant from a manuscript of St. Thomas's Church in Leipzig. The result is a Mass of St. Mary as it might have sounded in (then still Catholic) Wittenberg around 1500.

Despite its surprisingly simple title, Arie, the greater part of the collection published by Barbara Strozzi in 1644 consists of five cantatas and one serenata, all of which are included on this recording. In many ways, these compositions reflect the composer’s desire to experiment with and challenge the conventions of the genres with which she was working; challenges which are brilliantly surmounted here by the soprano Emanuela Galli and the instrumentalists of La Risonanza, expertly led from the harpsichord by Fabio Bonizzoni.

Ming Tsao is a Chinese-American composer active in Europe. His works have been performed at the Donaueschingen Festival, Wien Modern, Wittener Tage, Maerz Musik and Darmstadt. Tsao’s composition teachers include Chaya Czernowin, Brian Ferneyhough and Mario Davidovsky. Tsao is also Professor of Composition at Göteborg University, Sweden. He holds composition degrees from University of California, San Diego and Berklee College of Music. This is the first monographic CD of Tsao’s music. 'Pathology of Syntax' attempts to simulate a late Beethoven quartet. The Beethoven fragments dissolve into the physicality of the string quartet medium where the energy of bowing, plucking, scraping and brushing physical materials such as hair, wood and metal achieves an independence from the transcribed material it seeks to represent. 'One-Way Street' is a meditative, contemplative work that gradually disassembles what we assume to be beautiful: natural harmonics, drones and ecstatic rhythms. In 'Not Reconciled', the sound of fingernails brushing against strings, the rattling of snares on a snare drum or the clicking of clarinet keys settle into a sound world tentatively held together by the incongruous instruments that create it. '(Un)cove'r is a meditation on the opening of Beethoven’s last piano sonata, opus 111 (first movement). 'The Book of Virtual Transcriptions' consists of 49 aural signs ranging from abstract to concrete images of musical material from the Adagio movement of Mozart's oboe quartet (K.V. 370). These signs and their relations pose as stimuli that force the brain to complete a virtual transcription of the Mozart movement in which one constructs a way to listen to the Mozart that engages the musical unconscious. 'Thinking of …' is an homage to the double-bass player and artist Stefano Scodanibbio who died before his time in 2012. This project gathered the crème de la crème of the modern double-bass world. Sebastian Gramss, as the producer, composer and one of the players, pays respect to Scodanibbio’s work in two ways: by leaning on his music, and by continuing his work through the exploration of new forms and approaches, pushing the limits of double bass playing even further. Due to the unpredictability of the players’ contributions, Gramss decided not to write long, continuous compositions, but instead to create a number of shorter combinable modules, which were connected after the recording was done. The second part of the album is a collection of the most personal solo contributions – in these 11 pieces the players share their individual, personal connection to Scodanibbio’s work and show the wide scope of their musicality. The album ends with a treat – a bonus track “Virtù”, unpublished before. The track is a live recording of a duo by Stefano Scodanibbio and Sebastian Gramss from the Altstadtherbst Festival in Düsseldorf in 2008. This piece ties the whole album together and lets us enjoy Scodanibbio’s playing with the creator of 'Thinking of …'.

Fragments Claude LEDOUX: Notizen-Fragmente, Jean-Pierre DELEUZE: Voici l'absence This recording is the result of a promise made by two young musicians in April 2009, when then-resident organist Cindy Castillo invited her favourite chamber music partner, singer Aurélie Franck, to Japan’s Sapporo Concert Hall. The concert included the premiere of the first book of Claude Ledoux’s 'Notizen-Fragmente' (Fragmentary Notes), a work written specially for the two of them, on youthful texts by Rainer Maria Rilke. At the end of the concert, the artists promised each other that they would continue down this privileged path of performing works inspired by and composed for them and so in March 2012 they persuaded composer Jean-Pierre Deleuze to write a new song-cycle for organ and voice, for inclusion in a concert centred on Angels (and Demons) at the Ars Musica festival. The result was 'Voici l’absence – Cinq déplorations en antiphonie' (Here is Absence – Five Antiphonal Deplorations), a work of deeply poetic, humane music on texts of Baschô, Jacques Crickillon and Henri de Montherlant.

A new album bringing classic carols to life under the expert direction of conductor and author Andrew Gant, coinciding with the release later this year of his new book “Christmas Carols, A Celebration”. Everyone loves a carol - in the end, even Scrooge. They have the power to summon up a special kind of midwinter mood, like the aroma of mince pies and mulled wine and the twinkle of lights on a tree. It’s a kind of magic. But how did they get that magic? In 'Christmas Carols' Andrew Gant tells the story of some 20 carols, each accompanied by lyrics and music, unravelling a captivating - and often surprising - tale of great musicians and thinkers, saints and pagans, shepherd boys, choirboys, monks and drunks. We delve into the history of such favourites as ‘Good King Wenceslas’, ‘Away in a Manger’ and ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’, discovering along the way how ‘Hark, the Herald angels sing’ came to replace ‘Hark, how all the welkin ring’ and how Ralph Vaughan Williams bolted the tune of an English folk song about a dead ox to a poem by a nineteenth-century American pilgrim to make ‘O little town of Bethlehem’. 'Christmas Carols' brims with anecdote, expert knowledge and Christmas spirit. It is a fittingly joyous account of one of our best-loved musical traditions.
