TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No.3 Op.29 ‘Polish’ Symphony No.4 Op.36, Symphony No.6 Op.74 ‘Pathétique’ Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Vasily Petrenko Petrenko’s Tchaikovsky promises to be one of the most important orchestral releases of 2017. Universal praise from reviewers for the first volume of Symphonies 1, 2 and 5 bodes well for this eagerly-awaited release: Gramophone gave Volume One an Editor’s choice and it reigned as a top 10 UK Classical chart title for 7 weeks in 2016. “Petrenko’s Tchaikovsky is authentically Russian in its bright, sharp-edged colours and rhythms...these are splendidly vivid performances.” Sunday Times, 12th June 2016 “bursting with promise...Symphony No 5, full of light, shade, intensity, yearning accentuation, is a fine addition to a busy field. Petrenko and the RLPO continue to make an exciting partnership.” The Guardian, 19th June 2016 ****

“the orchestra sounds amazing … it has a wonderful warmth and reserve and depth; it’s very fresh, I don’t think it imitates any other recordings.” CD Review, 9th July 2016 “It was worth the wait: this release of Symphonies Nos 1, 2 and 5 makes the best possible start to the projected cycle...If future releases match these impetuous, glorious performances, Petrenko’s should be a cycle to be reckoned with.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2016 Other RLPO recordings on ONYX: ONYX4150 Tchaikovsky Symphonies Vol.1/Petrenko ONYX4135 Tchaikovsky Piano Concertos 1&2/Petrenko/ Trpceski ONYX4155 Vaughan Williams Symphonies 2&8/Manze ONYX4145 Elgar Symphony No.1, Cockaigne Overture/Petrenko Coming soon: ONYX4168 Prokofiev Piano Concertos 1&3 RLPO/Petrenko/Trpceski ONYX4165 Elgar Symphony No.2 RLPO/Petrenko ONYX4161 Vaughan Wiliams Symphonies Nos.3&4 RLPO/Manze

SCHNITTKE: Musica Nostalgica Sonata No.1, Suite in an Olden Style, Memoriam Oleg Kagan, Musica Nostalgica ELSCHENBROICH: Shards of Alfred Schnittke on the 10th anniversary of his death

Leonard Elschenbroich For those wanting to explore the chamber music of 20th-century master, Alfred Schinttke, this CD is the perfect place to start. The disc ends with a highly personal musical memorial to Schnittke by Leonard Elschenbroich as both composer and performer, who has had since his early years a deep interest in both the man and music: arguably the greatest Russian composer since Shostakovich. "Whilst the musics on this recording are formally very contrasting - neo-baroque stylisations vs. atonal modernism – it is the sentiment of Nostalgia that binds them all together. In the Russian sense of the word, compared to its use in English, Nostalgia is a feeling more painful, more severe, regarded with respectful fear. A dangerous disease, a tragic psychological endemic" Leonard Elschenbroich

CHOPIN: Les états d'Ame 24 Preludes Op. 28, Sonata No. 2 Op.35

Julien Brocal Julien Brocal was born in Arles, France in 1987 and began piano lessons at the age of 5, and by 7 was performing on stage. In 2013 he was tutored by Maria João Pires at Cité de la Musique in Paris, and later she invited him to develop his projects and studies at the Queen Elisabeth Musical Chapel, and participate in the creation of the Partitura Project. Since then they have performed together at many of the worlds leading festivals and venues. This disc is Julien’s debut recording. Chopin composed both his Preludes, Op.28 and Second Piano Sonata, Op.35 in the years 1838–39, which also saw the start of his relationship with the writer George Sand and their infamous winter sojourn in Majorca. A time where the mood changed from happiness to great tension in their relationship, his health worsened, doctors attended him: "One told me I was going to die, the next that I was dying, and the last that I was already dead"; and the weather changed from warm sun to cold, relentless rain. Many changing moods are reflected in the Preludes.

MONTEVERDI: Vespers Vespro della Beate Vergine 1610 400 years after their publication, Monteverdi's 'Vespro della Beate Vergine' still intrigues. This monument of sacred music explores the most varied forms whilst retaining a remarkable feeling of unity and expressiveness. Under the baton of Marco Mencoboni this score, the fruit of new musicological research, plays with space in a similar way as did Monteverdi, placing the singers and instrumentalists in different parts of the church. A new interpretation to be discovered in excellent surround sound on 2 SACDs!

MONTEVERDI: The Operas & Marian Vespers Ensemble Elyma Gabriel Garrido

At the end of the 1990s, the recordings of Gabriel Garrido represented an important landmark in the interpretation of Monteverdi operas. What attracted one’s attention in his versions were the brilliance and the hedonism of the actual recording itself. Garrido involved not only the typical instruments which can play contrapuntally (keyboard, organ, archlute, harp, etc) but those with melodic capabilities as well. The resulting sound was opulent but never ornamental; and from it the dramatic rhythm flowed in a series of subtle ways. Reinforcing the instrumental complement was never done to the detriment of vocal concerns, which continued to have a leading role. It was precisely with the voices where Garrido set himself apart from his predecessors. By deciding to surround himself with Latin voices (Italian, French, Spanish, Argentinian…) he endowed his Monteverdi with warm, rounded and sensual vocal colours. Many of the individual vocal performances continue to represent interpretative touchstones: the Messaggera and Penelope of Gloria Banditelli, the Proserpina of Roberta Invernizzi, the Telemaco of Jean-Paul Fouchécourt, the Caronte of Antonio Abete, the Ulisse of Furio Zanasi and the Melanto of Guillemette Laurens stand out in particular. Interpretatively distant not just from the contrasting theatricality offered by Harnoncourt and Jacobs but also the restrained seriousness of the British ensembles, the Monteverdian readings of Garrido are possessed of a sound which manages to be spectacular and yet private, considered yet visceral. CD 1-2 L‘Orfeo (1607) CD 3-5 Il ritorno d‘Ulisse in patria (1641) CD 6-8 L‘incoronazione di Poppea (1642) CD 9-10 Vespro della Beata Vergine (1610) CD 11-12 Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda (1624) and madrigals based on “Gerusalemme liberata“ (Torquato Tasso, 1574)

WORLD PREMIERE RECORDINGS

This album marks the rediscovery of one of the most important composers of the Italian Baroque: Carlo Francesco Cesarini (1666-1741?), a virtuoso violinist also known as Carlo del Violino. The six previously unreleased cantatas on this recording were composed in the early 18th century and regularly performed between 1700 and 1717. They are all taken from Manuscript 2248 of the Biblioteca Casanatense in Rome, a rich anthological collection assembled for Cardinal Pamphili, a major figure in Roman cultural life. The themes treated are in the pure Arcadian-pastoral tradition: the suffering caused by an unreciprocated love (Penso di non mirarvi), betrayal and distance from the loved one (Oh dell’Adria reina), jealousy (Filli no’l niego io dissi). Two of the cantatas are based on mythological episodes: Ariadne for 'Già gl’augelli canori', and Phaeton for 'Fetonte e non ti basta'. This major rediscovery is sublimated by the divine Stéphanie Varnerin and L'Astrée (Academia Montis Regalis), in the expert hands of Giorgio Tabacco, enhanced by the famous Aparté recording quality that will delight the most demanding audiophile.

Salomone ROSSI: The Songs of Solomon Hebrew Prayers and Instrumental Music Salomone Rossi (c.1570-c.1630) was born in Mantua and lived there all his life. He was the first Jew to compose, perform and publish polyphonic settings of synagogue liturgy for mixed choir. He also made significant contributions to instrumental music; his four books of instrumental works include 116 pieces. In 1623, Rossi published his album of 33 songs titled “Hashirim Asher Lish’lomo” (The Song of Solomon) for various vocal ensembles ranging from 3 to 8 voices. The 'Songs of Solomon' focuses mainly on Jewish music of Mantua and Venice at the end of the Renaissance and early Baroque period. Flanked by excerpts from his instrumental music, the present programme provides a portrait in sound of this great, but little known, composer. Profeti della Quinta was founded in the Galilee region of Israel by singer and harpsichordist Elam Rotem. From its inception in 2003, it has focused on sacred and secular 16th-century acappella repertoire. Its members' background and training range from church-choral and Jewish-cantorial singing to opera and oratorio. For this project, the native Hebrew-speaking ensemble is unique in offering an unmediated grasp of both text and music in the historically individual style of Rossi's “Hashirim Asher Lish'lomo”.
