BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 3 'Eroica' Op. 55, Coriolan Overture Op. 62 Le Concert des Nations Jordi Savall ‘‘Jordi Savall captures the work’s potent energy to perfection, the whiff of gunpowder hanging in the air." James Jolly, Gramophone This is music to shock, arouse and thrill — the only thing it won’t do is leave you unmoved. Sitting like a gate-keeper to the new century, a century that saw more change than any before it, Beethoven’s 'Eroica' (1803-5) changed the history of music. Take note, it seems to say: Man has the power to challenge Fate and sometimes even win (the French Revolution was still echoing in the mind). In 1994 Jordi Savall conducted Beethoven's 'Eroica' symphony with Le Concert des Nations (a group he founded in 1989 for Baroque music), winning praise for this well-researched and groundbreaking interpretation.

Schumann’s 'Konzertstücke' complement his solo concertos. Confined to one movement, they are more concentrated, more pointed in their characters and freer in the development of their ideas than their bigger siblings. Patricia Kopatchinskaja puts her own stamp onto this compact genre. Corresponding to her performance of the Violin Concerto (on Vol. 4), she also interprets the 'Violin Fantasy' without any Romantic bias. She traces Schumann’s contrasts with a broad sound palette, clear sounds alternating with intensive vibrato, and virtuoso passages characterised by nimble agility. The Fantasy finds its expression in Kopatchinskaja’s free approach. Alexander Lonquich’s performance of the two Konzertstücke for piano follows an individual, but nonetheless Romantic reading, favouring rich sounds and carefully controlled accentuation as a means of expression. The covertly multi-movement Konzertstück for Four Horns reveals Schumann’s symphonic experience: he softens the boundaries of the symphony as a genre in the Classical-Romantic tradition. April will see the release of the Schumann edition’s final volume, showcasing the 'Zwickau' Symphony as well as the complete Overtures.

James Ehnes Andrew Armstrong
Label: Onyx Classics File Under: Classical/Instrumental Catalogue No: ONYX4159 Barcode: 880040415923 NORMAL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: cristal James Ehnes [violin] Andrew Armstrong [piano]
After a rapturous critical reception for their Franck & Strauss Violin Sonatas, [see below] James and Andrew turn their attention to three violin sonatas all composed around the years of World War I. The Sibelius 'Berceuse' also dates from the war years when Finland was isolated from the rest of Europe. Sibelius was short of money and busy writing the 6th and 7th symphonies, and planning his 8th: the six short pieces of Op. 79 were attractive to publishers who were wary of large scale works with little chance of commercial return during the hostilities. Debussy would die in 1918 and had, like Elgar, composed very little during the conflict. "I want to work," he wrote to his publisher Durand, "not so much for myself, as to provide a proof, however small, that thirty million Boches can’t destroy French thought". Elgar told a friend "I cannot do any real work with the awful shadow hanging over us" he said. Suffering from ill health, Elgar wrote the sonata in Sussex where a copse of gnarled lightning-ravaged trees, near his house on the South Downs, inspired him to embark on three late great chamber works. Respighi’s sonata inhabits a heroic late romantic almost ‘Brahmsian’ world, seemingly unscathed by the devastation of the ‘War to end all wars’. Also available:

Flavio Ferri-Benedetti, one of today’s key countertenors for Italian baroque, pays homage to the once-admired but often underestimated castrato Domenico Annibali, who was greatly appreciated in a time when Senesino, Farinelli, Caffarelli or Carestini were fighting for supremacy on Europe’s stages. His 25-year career had him traveling between Italy, England, Germany and Poland, singing for composers such as Handel, Porpora, Zelenka but, most importantly, for Hasse, with whom he premiered most of his operatic roles together with the great prima donna Faustina Bordoni. In this exciting and varied recital, half of the programme is brand new to disc, including some rare gems such as Feo’s 'Andromaca', Latilla’s 'Romolo' or Porpora’s 'Filandro'. Annibali’s season in London for Handel is not only represented by Arminio’s breathtaking prison aria, but also by the duet from 'Berenice', here featuring Italian soprano Carla Nahadi Babelegoto. Ensemble Il Basilico, under the guidance of Eva Saladin, accompany Ferri-Benedetti and his portrayal of baroque affetti, with a range of three octaves from baritone to mezzosoprano, as castrati were wont to do. 'Herzens-Lieder' [Songs of the Heart] – this title would certainly have appealed to the two librettists and four composers featured upon this CD. In terms of music and church history, they all – Johann Kuhnau, Georg Philipp Telemann, Christoph Graupner and Johann Sebastian Bach – form part of the Lutheran church choir tradition. The text 'Mein Herz schwimmt in Blut', set by both Graupner and Bach, was written by Georg Christian Lehms (1684-1717). In the preface to this work, the poet expresses his hope that composers will set his cantatas to music in such a manner that “not only the harmony of the instruments is heard”, but that “the heart is revived through the power of the sung words”. The vocal soloist of this recording is the Austrian soprano Miriam Feuersinger, Echo award winner in 2014 for her recording of cantatas by Graupner (CHR77381). She has played with renowned musicians such as Ton Koopman, Václav Luks, and Peter Kooij and with baroque ensembles such as the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, La Cetra, Collegium 1704 and Capricornus Consort Basel to name but a few. Also available: CHR77381 Himmlische Stunden, Selige Zeiten Cantatas by Christoph Graupner/Miriam Feuersinger, Capricornus Consort Basel “a life-enhancing disc” George Pratt, BBC Music Magazine – May 2014, ***** perf / ***** rec “a major discovery … The disc’s first half sets the bar very high … well worth investigating.” Carl Rosman, IRR – May 2014 “Miriam Feuersinger’s effortlessly enunciated singing (not to mention the breathing clarity of her high notes) is perfectly partnered here by a one-to-a-part ensemble.” Brian Clark, Early Music Review – April 2014

The madrigal 'Vestiva i colli' is probably one of the greatest examples of enduring music, crossing centuries. It originated as a five-voice setting by Palestrina, but gained in popularity as other authors made parodies and variations on it. The art of improvising was thoroughly intertwined with performance practice between the 16th and 17th centuries, and it was expected that performers were able to provide their own variations and embellishments. 'Vestiva i colli' is a prime example of a common melody to which embellishments are applied; Bassano, Della Casa, De Selma, and Rognoni et al provide their own, sometimes in multiple versions. These are all showcase pieces, for display of instrumental technique and improvisatory imagination. Besides the aforesaid composers the recording focusses on the premiere recording of a Mass by Baldassare Vialardo (d. after 1620), Maestro di Cappella active in Milan. It is a late example of a parody on 'Vestiva i colli': an ideal recapitulation of the different genres and styles on this CD, in an intense musical experimentation. La Schola was founded in 1894 and opened on 15 October 1896 as an alternative to the emphasis on opera at the Paris Conservatoire and to foster the study of late Baroque and early Classical works, Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony. Daniel BOLLIUS: Johannes-Oratorium St John's Oratorio
Johann Rosenmüller Ensemble Musical encyclopaedias offer scant information on Daniel Bollius: he was born around 1590 and died c1642, probably in Mainz. He entered the services of the Archbishop of Mainz by 1626, but most likely several years earlier as he had resigned as court organist in Sigmaringen in 1618 and there is no evidence of intermediate posts. The 'Repræsentatio of St. John' must therefore have been composed between 1618 and 1626, the year in which Johann Schweikhard, the dedicatee of the work, died. Bollius is one of the early German exponents of the new Italian style characterised by Monteverdi. His 'Repræsentatio' on the conception and birth of St John the Baptist has close ties with the 'Rappresentatione di Anima, et di Corpo' by Emilio de’ Cavalieri, making it unique for early 17th century Germany and the first ever oratorio to be written by a German composer.

AAM Berlin René Jacobs Bach revised his 'Johannes-Passion' regularly: he returned to it over a period of 26 years, from 1724 until his death. It is the version hallowed by tradition, established by the Kantor a year before his death, that is presented on these CDs. However, the 1725 version, equally outstanding musically, has also been recorded complete and can be downloaded as a bonus in high-resolution sound. Comparison of the two versions reveals the underlying meaning of this matchless 'Passion'.
