SHOSTAKOVICH: 24 Preludes and Fugues Peter Donohoe Celebrated international pianist Peter Donohoe begins a new series of Shostakovich releases on Signum Classics with this new recording of Dmitri Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87. All 24 of the preludes and fugues were composed within several months of each other, after Shostakovich was inspired by the performance of Tatiana Nicolayeva, whom he heard as a jurist for the Leipzig Bach Competition in 1951. Although doubtlessly inspired by J.S. Bach’s own 48 Preludes and Fugues in his use of form and counterpoint, Shostakovich’s compositions are all deeply original and rooted in his own enigmatic and ambiguous style, moving from charming simplicity to dazzling virtuosity. “Peter Donohoe is a pianistic superman. The British pianist chews through repertoire like most people eat handfuls of peanuts, and his technical level is truly awe-inspiring” Pianist Magazine, October 2016 ***** [Prokofiev Sonatas, Somm]

SCHUBERT: Piano Sonatas D960, D664 Javier Perianes The Sonata D664: an example of Schubert's fine craftsmanship despite being in the shadow of the giant, Beethoven. Only nine years later, Schubert, just 31 years old, produced what was, already, his last sonata (D960), just a few weeks before his shockingly premature death. It would take many decades for these masterpieces to gain the same consideration as the late symphonies of Mozart or Beethoven’s Op.132 but this music is now cherished by today’s artists – among them Javier Perianes, who here returns to Schubert after a remarkable first volume that enjoyed great success with the public.

Before the Ending of the Day Music for Choral Evening Prayer

Exon Singers / Richard Wilberforce Over the years the Exon Singers have received considerable recognition for their commitment to commissioning and recording new works from eminent composers. For their 50th anniversary CD on new label Rubicon Classics, they have selected some of their favourites in the form of an extended service but without spoken word. Most of the music was written for the choir's annual broadcast of Choral Evening Prayer from Buckfast Abbey. Since 1997 Composers-in-Residence have been invited to their summer Festival in Tavistock, on the edge of Dartmoor, and their works are represented here. The choir’s performances include the Oxford Festival of Contemporary Music and the Edinburgh Festival, as well as concerts in St John’s College, Cambridge, Gloucester, Wells, Winchester and Salisbury. Richard Wilberforce has been Conductor and Artistic Director since 2012, succeeding Matthew Owens, and here writes his first works for the Exons: a set of opening responses and a new Festival Hymn.

BEETHOVEN: Violin Concerto Op. 61 POSSINGER: Violin Concerto Op. 9 It is unbelievable that such a popular work in the current repertoire as Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Concerto Op. 61 only conquered the concert hall around three to four decades after its composition. The work ultimately gained its popularity through two revised printed versions published in Vienna and in London, which both reveal substantial revisions in the solo parts. The quest for Beethoven’s “original version” proves to be extremely complicated, as Beethoven himself offered up to four alternatives to the soloists in some spots of the manuscript. A study of the different inks and quills used in that autograph has allowed the violinist Anton Steck to propose the new und unusual version recorded here, which thanks also to the use of historical instruments results in a tangible and transparent rendering of a very well-known piece. In addition to Beethoven’s composition, Steck presents the world premiere recording of the Violin Concerto of the Viennese violinist Franz Alexander Pössinger – a friend of Beethoven who was probably involved in the revision of the solo part of his concerto. Pössinger’s work was written in 1805, just one year before Beethoven’s.

Carlo Lenzi & W.A. Mozart: Sacred Music in Lombardy 1770-80

Carlo Lenzi, born in 1735 near Bergamo, was educated in Naples, famous for its four conservatories. He worked for 40 years as maestro di cappella at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo. His permanent residence in that town was both a blessing and a curse to the composer: on the one hand he occupied a prestigious position, which was safe and stable, but on the other hand he was limited to a local audience, so that his works were largely confined to Bergamo, cut off from the most important international communication channels. We are presented with the opportunity to rediscover this treasure today: an extensive vocal and instrumental oeuvre, largely comparable with Mozart’s and Haydn’s works. Out of Lenzi’s entire compositional ouput, his 34 'Lamentations for the Holy Week' particularly stand out. For this recording, the first lamentation for Good Friday in 1777 and the second lamentation for Maundy Thursday in 1780 were chosen. Both share a modern style, a pathetic-sentimental expression, as well as brilliant and intricately composed vocal parts. They manifest a personal inclination towards the galant style, which is characterised by a strong sense for the word and its setting. Mozart composed the motet 'Exsultate, jubilate' KV165 in Milan in January 1773 for the soprano Venanzio Rauzzini. This motet is one of Mozart’s most remarkable spiritual works. Its outstanding design has the same characteristics as the compositions of Lenzi: a brilliant euphoria that would develop into a stylistic hallmark of Mozart’s works for Milan and for Salzburg. The Italian soprano Francesca Lombardi Mazzulli is regarded as one the most promising singers of the younger generation. She works with conductors such as Alan Curtis, Christophe Rousset, Alessandro De Marchi, Fabio Biondi, Andrea Marcon, and George Petrou. 1 Carlo LENZI: Sonata Terza in tempo giusto, ma furioso con espressione 5:49 from: Suonate fatte per la fonzione del Venerdì S.to in Cadice (1771) Lamentazione II per il Giovedì Santo (1780) 14:05 2 Larghetto - Allegretto 5:37 | 3 Largo - Allegretto 3:37 | 4 Largo - Andantino 4:51 5 Sonata Prima da suonarsi con le sordine 9:16 from: Suonate fatte per la fonzione del Venerdì S.to in Cadice (1771) Lamentazione I per il Venerdì Santo (1777) 12:58 6 Largo - Andante - Allegro 3:49 | 7 Recitativo, Largo staccato - Allegro 0:59 | 8 Andantino - Largo - Andantino 4:15 9 Allegro moderato - Allegretto 3:55 W.A. SCHUMANN: Fantasie & Kreisleriana Jean-Philippe Collard At a time when Schumann was crazed with passion for his fiancée Clara, his overflowing inspiration created the Fantasie in C major Op.17 to breathtaking peaks. The ghostly universe inhabited by the figure of the musician Kreisler, invented by the Romantic writer Ernest Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, haunted the mind of the bipolar composer leading to the ‘bizarre, demented music’ of Kreisleriana Op.16. Dating from the same period it concentrates into eight wildly contrasting pieces the nightmarish atmosphere, the bitter chasms and poetic visions, of a literally fantastic landscape. Jean-Philippe Collard seizes the Schumann aesthetic and opens up infinite horizons from which one does not emerge unscathed. 1-3 Fantasy in C Major, Op. 17 4-11 Kreisleriana, Op. 16 12 Widmung, S.566 (After Schumann)
