Tributary Tales GERALD CLAYTON GRAMMY-nominated pianist and composer Gerald Clayton melds together diverse inspirations to create an interconnected musical narrative that resonates with modern styles as boldly as it evokes classic and timeless sounds. On his new record Tributary Tales, Clayton traces paths of myriad streams – personal, experiential, intangible – that flow into one another, creating a musical narrative greater than the sum of his individual compositions. To record the album, Clayton assembled a group of artists both new and familiar, each of whom brings additional, unique influences and experiences to the music. Saxophonists Logan Richardson, Ben Wendel and Dayna Stephens, bassist Joe Sanders, drummer Justin Brown and percussionists Henry Cole and Gabriel Lugo join guest vocalist Sachal Vasandani and poets Carl Hancock Rux and Aja Monet to bring life to Clayton’s range of alluring compositions.

Kingdom ALEXI TUOMARILA Described by Jazz Times as ‘...one of the next big deals on jazz piano...’, Alexi Tuomarila is amoungst the finest pianists on the European Jazz scene right now. Known for his work with Polish ECM trumpeter Tomasz Stanko, Tuomarila has quietly grown into a musical force to reckon with. A true sculptor of sound, the pianist and composer has the ability to mould awe-inspiring melodic lines with precision and rhythmic finesse, decorated with a vibrantimagination, energy undercut with melancholy. Kingdom is Alexi’s new trio album with long term comrades Mats Eilertsen and Olavi Louhivuori (following the hugely successful release of Seven Hills in 2013). Two of the most respected musicians in European jazz, Eilertsen and Louhivuori combine wonderfully fluid technical proficiency and world class musicianship: they formidably articulate everything Tuomarila plays; their improvisations are bold and developed with sleekness and poise.

She Moves On YOUN SUN NAH Korean singer Youn Sun Nah is one of the most brilliantly successful artists of our time in jazz (or more accurately, jazz-related music). In her native country she is a major star. Her love of chanson took her to France, the country where her meteoric rise and her huge success (150,000+ sales of her last two albums) all across Europe took wing. Youn’s voice is instantly recognizable, charismatically urgent and infinitely adaptable and with “She Moves On” this chameleonic and delightful artist has reinvented herself once again.
Label: ACT Music File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: ACT90372 Barcode: 614427903723 NORMAL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Youn Sun Nah - Vocals, Kalimba Jamie Saft - Piano, Hammond Organ, Fender Rhodes & Wurlitzer Brad Jones - Acoustic Bass Dan Rieser - Drums Marc Ribot - Electric & Acoustic Guitars (tracks 2, 4, 5, 7, 11) Special Guests (track 3) Maxim Moston - Violin, String Arrangement Antoine Silverman - Violin Hiroko Taguchi - Viola Anja Wood - Violoncello
On the new album Youn Sun Nah now has concentrated her attention on jazz and rock/pop music from North America. In order to be completely, authentically within this musical world, she recorded the album in New York, with a new band consisting of some of the most interesting and multi-faceted characters in the city. The most important of these new partners-in-crime is the producer, pianist and keyboard player Jamie Saft. He has until now mainly been known for his work with experimenters and avant-garde figures such as John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Cuong Vu and Chris Speed, but here he reveals himself to be a highly sensitive accompanist, capable of the most subtle variation. As producer he has created a warm sound for the album, redolent of the greats of the past but at the same time thoroughly contemporary. Cross-Platform Interchange MISHA MULLOV-ABBADO London-based bassist and composer Misha Mullov-Abbado burst onto the scene in 2015 with a debut album that prompted a stream of plaudits from international press and fans alike. New Ansonia, featuring wunderkind Jacob Collier, was described by the Daily Telegraph as an ‘unfailingly inventive, artfully produced, and delightfully sunny debut’. As the son of the late great Italian conductor Claudio Abbado and Russian violinist Viktoria Mullova , there was great anticipation about the album. Misha not only exceeded expectations but demonstrated that he is an instrumentalist and composer in his own right. Cross-Platform Interchange, Misha’s second album, not only confirms his promise as a musician and composer of real depth and vision, but demonstrates his intention to do things his own way. With a commanding bass sound and bank of influences at his disposal, Misha has produced an album that will elevate his international career and generate a global fanbase. Misha is an artist with a long career ahead of him and there is no doubt that Cross-Platform Interchange will be a significant staging post in this journey.

Time Out + BONUS ALBUM: Brubeck Time
DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET By 1959, the Dave Brubeck Quartet with Paul Desmond had been in existence for nearly a decade and it was highly popular among jazz audiences (the bass player and the drummer changed a few times until Joe Morello arrived in 1956 and Eugene Wright joined the group in 1958/59). They had begun playing in colleges, and slowly made their way into concert halls and jazz festivals. This release presents the original classic album Time Out in its entirety. One of the best-selling jazz albums of all time, it included the original versions of two of the group’s best known songs: “Take Five” and “Blue Rondo à la Turk”. In addition to the original masterpiece, we have included as a bonus the complete album Brubeck Time (Columbia, 1955), which was the first Brubeck LP recorded in the studio. Brubeck appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 1954 and this album's title derives from his portrait on the cover of the magazine, a painting by American illustrator Boris Artzybasheff.

At Last! + BONUS ALBUM: The Second Time Around + a further 7 Bonus Tracks
ETTA JAMES Etta James’ powerful, versatile and emotionally direct voice could enliven the raunchiest blues as well as the subtlest love songs. She was one of the most iconic soul singers, with a career that lasted decades. James was as comfortable carrying subtle melodies as she was exploring the more raucous side of the blues. Presented here is her debut album, At Last!, released in 1960 by the Chess Records’ subsidiary Argo label. Another classic album by the singer, The Second Time Around, has been added here as a bonus, as well as seven extra tracks gathering a variety of those great hard to find sides she recorded for different labels, such as Modern, Kent, Chess and Crown Records, between 1955 and 1958. The songs contained here are the cream of the crop from Etta’s early years. Without a doubt, this is the material upon which her kingdom was built.

MARVIN GAYE
Label: State of Art File Under: Soul Catalogue No: 81168 Barcode: 8437016248744 MID Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack
This collector’s edition contains Gaye’s long unavailable and magnificent debut album for the Tamla label, The Soulful Moods of Marvin Gaye (1961). This masterpiece features more jazz than soul, and has a much different sound than Gaye’s subsequent albums. The LP was recorded over two weeks and was issued on June 8, 1961. Before the release of his first single, the Berry Gordy ballad “Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide”, Marvin added an extra “e” to his last name, to look “more professional.” In addition to Marvin Gaye’s debut album, this release includes the singer’s second LP, That Stubborn Kinda Fellow, which was released in 1962 by Tamla Records (a subsidiary of Motown Records). The songs contained on this album constitute the first hits of Gaye’s career and helped establish him as one of the most important artists of the legendary Detroit record label. Three further songs have been added as bonus tracks: “Mr. Sandman” (which was first issued as a single in 1962), and two rare tracks which were cut during Gaye’s time as a member of R&B groups like Harvey & The Moonglows (under the direction of Harvey Fuqua) and The Marquees (also featuring Bo Diddley). Green Onions BOOKER T. & THE M.G.s As the house band for the Stax/Volt labels, Booker T. and The M.G.s helped define the spare, punchy sound of Memphis soul music. In contrast to Motown’s orchestrated, pop-soul records, the Stax approach was lean, economical and deeply groove oriented. The group appeared on more than 600 recordings, including classics by such giants as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Eddie Floyd, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, and William Bell, among many others. This quintessential collector’s edition contains Booker T. and The M.G.s’ outstanding debut LP, Green Onions (1962) – one of the alltime cornerstones of soul and R&B. The album includes the legendary title track that became a major hit, its original B-side (“Behave Yourself”), a new composition dubbed “Mo’ Onions”, and nine assorted covers of popular R&B hits of the period. In addition, this remastered CD features 8 bonus tracks, presenting some of the album’s songs recorded by other seminal artists. This is the material upon which the Memphis soul legacy was built.

Coltrane’s September 15, 1957 studio session in Hackensack, New Jersey produced all of the material for that legendary album, which marked the first time that Trane was given the opportunity to select his own sidemen for a date. He made good use of his newfound freedom, enlisting the support of trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. John Coltrane would only record with Lee Morgan on two occasions: first on Johnny Griffin’s April 6 & 17, 1957 sessions for the LP A Blowing Session, followed by Blue Train several months later. The other member of the front line, Curtis Fuller, began his recorded collaboration with Coltrane on Paul Chambers’ album High Step (recorded in a quintet setting with Philly Joe Jones on drums in Boston on April 20, 1956), followed by a date for pianist Sonny Clark for his album Sonny’s Crib, which took place just two weeks before the Blue Train date (and featured the ubiquitous Chambers on bass). As for the rhythm section, Kenny Drew had appeared with Coltrane on Chambers’ March 2, 1956 date for the album Chamber’s Music that featured the same rhythm section as Blue Train (Drew, Chambers & Jones) with Coltrane as the sole horn. They would never record together again after the latter album was made. Trane’s professional association with Chambers and Jones began when the three of them were members of Miles Davis’ first great quintet (with pianist Red Garland as the fifth member). 01 Track listing: 01 BLUE TRAIN 10:45 02 MOMENT’S NOTICE 9:13 03 LOCOMOTION 7:17 04 I’M OLD FASHIONED 8:01 05 LAZY BIRD 7:09 06 LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE 4:59* 07 I LOVE YOU 5:33* 08 TRANE’S SLOW BLUES 6:05* 09 LUSH LIFE 13:56* 10 I HEAR A RHAPSODY 5:59* TOTAL TIME: 79:00

Lady in Satin + 8 Bonus Tracks
BILLIE HOLIDAY
Label: State of Art File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: 81172 Barcode: 8437016248980 MID Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack
Most jazz fans now consider Lady in Satin to be Holiday’s last great effort, and she also loved the album herself. It is true that her voice, after a life of self-abuse, wasn’t the same as on her earliest 1930s recordings. Her expressiveness, however, would remain with her to the end, and this album seems to showcase her baring her soul like never before. Despite the later acceptance of the album, the critics at the time (obviously unaware of the fact that the singer had little more than a year more to live) weren’t so generous. Whatever its merits and flaws, there is no doubt that Lady in Satin is one of Billie Holiday’s most poignant recordings ever, and a true jazz classic. As a bonus to this album, we have added five ballads from a 1955 session with Harry Edison and Benny Carter recorded for Norman Granz, as well as the rare 1957 studio version of “Fine and Mellow” with Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster (recorded at a rehearsal for a TV show titled The Sound of Jazz, which featured Billie on a performance of the same title), and Holiday’s only two tracks from the 1958 Jazz at the Plaza concert (the rest featured Duke Ellington and His Orchestra and the Miles Davis Sextet with Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane and Bill Evans).

By the time this album was recorded, Duke Ellington had already become a major jazz star with nearly a four-decade musical career under his belt. He had played regularly on some of the most renowned stages in the world. Coltrane, who had been a member of the Miles Davis group and the Thelonious Monk quartet (with whom he recorded a number of albums), formed his own band in 1960 and recorded a plethora of classic LPs for Atlantic. While Duke was a consecrated figure, Trane was one of the promising new voices of modern jazz. Even though the saxophonist would delve further into free jazz a few years later, he still enjoyed playing ballads and blues in 1962. The swing idiom, of course, wasn’t new to him, nor was the Ellington sound. One of Coltrane’s earliest professional jobs as a musician had been as a member of alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges’ band (during one of the short periods in which Hodges left the Ellington orchestra). Nor was Ellington new to “modern jazz”, as he was a perennially “modern” composer, who frequently expressed his admiration for Thelonious Monk (with whom he played at Newport), Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie (with whom he shared an album), and Charles Mingus (a private recording of the Ellington band playing Mingus’ “The Clown” still exists), among others.

JOHNNY CASH
Label: State of Art File Under: Country Catalogue No: 81174 Barcode: 8437016249000 MID Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack
To hear Johnny Cash’s swaggering Sun Recordsera material is to marvel at one of the primal source-streams of what was fast becoming the head-waters of rock ‘n’ roll. Cash’s craggy, lunchbucket vocals could be heard on gleaming original versions of songs like “Cry Cry Cry”, “Folsom Prison Blues”, “Get Rhythm”, “Rock Island Line” and “I Walk the Line”. All these cuts were originally compiled on With His Hot and Blue Guitar. This was Johnny Cash’s first album. It was also the only one he released while he was still with Sun Records (however, the record company put together several Johnny Cash albums after he left the label). In fact, after Cash left Sun, many of these recordings were overdubbed in different ways. Choruses, additional instruments, echo, and applause were added at various times. However, as he proved during his final years, nothing beats the sound of Johnny Cash with just the simplest of backings. And so, for this release, we have removed virtually all the overdubs, allowing you to hear the Sun recordings exactly as they were first captured on the original LP edition of With His Hot and Blue Guitar. This album could be the poster child for why music doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective. There’s a disarming, straightforward, transparent authenticity to it that immediately wins you over. Combined with the production, it seems to transport the listener to another time and place – right into Sun studios with Cash and his musicians in 1957.

The formation heard here marks the third incarnation of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, which included trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, pianist Bobby Timmons and bassist Jymie Merritt. In 1954, the band came upon its first stable formation, which consisted of Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley, Horace Silver and Doug Watkins. Blakey’s second stable band began in 1957, and included Bill Hardman, Johnny Griffin (or Jackie McLean), Sam Dockery and Spanky Debrest. Lee Morgan was only 20-years old at the time the Jazz Messengers recorded Moanin’. His recording debut with Blakey had occurred the previous year at a session which featured an expanded version of the Jazz Messengers (called “the Jazz Messengers plus four”) on April 2, 1957. On April 6, the drummer hired him again for a septet session including John Coltrane. Morgan and Blakey would record together twice in early 1958 as sidemen for sessions conducted by organist Jimmy Smith (February 28) and tenor sax player Tina Brooks (March 16) prior to this. Moanin’ was the first authentic session of the third Jazz Messengers. It took place in Rudy Van Gelder’s Studio, in Hackensack, New Jersey, on October 30, 1958. It was to be the beginning of a long and stable musical relationship that would last until 1965, seven years before Morgan was shot dead (at 33-years old) by his common-law wife during an argument. Although she never gained the same kind of popularity as her colleagues Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan, Helen Merrill is considered among jazz cognoscenti to be one of the best singers in the genre’s history. The LP presented here, originally titled Helen Merrill, was her debut studio album. It showcases the singer backed by an all-star group that included the legendary trumpeter Clifford Brown. After Brown’s tragic death in a car accident in 1956 at the age of 25, all recorded works of this instrumental genius became highly priced, and so Merrill’s album would be successively reissued adding his name on the cover. Scott Yanow gave the LP a four-and-a-half star rating on All Music Guide, stating that, “Every recording by the short-lived trumpeter Clifford Brown is worth exploring, including his date with Helen Merrill. Trumpeter Brown is joined by Danny Bank on flute, and a four-piece rhythm section including pianist Jimmy Jones and guitarist Barry Galbraith. Quincy Jones provided the arrangements. The music is essentially straight-ahead bop, yet the seven standards are uplifted by the presence of Merrill (in top form) and Brown.” Merrill’s first recordings consisted of a few songs made with the Earl Hines Sextet in December 1952, followed by a couple of tunes with Jimmy Raney in 1953. She would also record four tracks with an orchestra conducted by Johnny Richards in February 1954 prior to her participation on the justly celebrated dates with Clifford Brown (December 22 & 24, 1954). All of the arrangements for the album with Brown were made by Quincy Jones. In spite of her obvious talents, Merrill only gained greater fame after she started touring Europe. Travelling kept her career alive. After living in Italy for a while and returning to the States, she went to live in Japan in 1967, where she stayed for five years. Although she never recorded as prolifically as some of her best known colleagues, Merrill always had her own audiences all over the world and continued working well into the first years of the 21st Century. Her last album, titled Lilac Wine, was recorded in 2002. Born to Croatian parents in New York on July 21, 1930 (her birth name was actually Jelena Ana Milcetic), Helen Merrill is 86 years old at the time of this writing. BO DIDDLEY
Label: State of Art File Under: Rock/Pop Catalogue No: 81179 Barcode: 8436569190272 MID Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack
Have Guitar, Will Travel was Bo Diddley’s third album and contains such important classics as “Cops and Robbers”, “Run Diddley Daddy”, and “Mona (I Need You Baby)”. More than one British Invasion band learned what they needed to know about American rock & roll from the songs on this record (The Rolling Stones cut “Cops and Robbers” at their earliest recording session, and later released a killer version of “Mona”). This record is every bit as raunchy as Diddley’s first two albums (the guitars may even be crunchier, and the singing shows more range). This is also the album that began the funny cover photos on Diddley’s records. There are more surprises on Diddley’s fourth album, In the Spotlight, which includes the languid, Caribbean-sounding “Limber”, the hot and raunchy “Road Runner”, the soft, romantic “Love Me”, the doo wop-style “Deed and Deed I Do”, the loping “Walkin’ and Talkin’”, “Craw-Dad” (a genuine diamond in the rough), “Signifying Blues”, and solid instrumentals like “Scuttle Bug” (which is actually “Live My Life” with the vocals removed and Otis Spann overdubbed on piano). According to music critic Bruce Eder, these tracks “make this record more than worthwhile.” Between hypnotic and rhythmic guitar lines, swaggering vocals, hot numbers and solid instrumentals all 28 of these songs serve up a young Bo Diddley at his raw and primal best, and confirm that right out of the box the guy didn’t sound like anyone else in rock & roll.

ETTA JAMES
Label: State of Art File Under: Soul Catalogue No: 81180 Barcode: 8436569190289 MID Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack
It was in the Sixties when Etta James truly found her musical direction and made a lasting mark as a soulful pop and blues diva. Her debut album, At Last! , was released in late 1960 and was noted for its varied choice in music from jazz standards to blues numbers to doo-wop and rhythm & blues. Later that same year, she released a second studio LP, The Second Time Around . The album took the same direction as her previous one, covering many jazz and pop standards. Most of the songs featured strings, and the album yielded two hit singles, “The Fool That I Am” and “Don’t Cry Baby,” which she sang without sacrificing her bluesy and churchy vocal mannerisms. With James, Chess launched its new era of recording soul with a beefed-up production, arranging, and writing staff. James’s output during her first several years at the company consisted primarily of string-laden ballads, many of them old standards. The healthy tension generated between the poplike arrangements of Riley Hampton and the gospel-blues vocals of James produced an early type of soul heavy on melodrama. Miss Etta James (1961) was released on the Crown label. Fusing rhythm & blues with gospel punch, swing and twist as well, it consists of a selection of early singles dating back as far as 1955, including “My One and Only,” and “Hey! Henry,” among others. Out of Land PARISIEN / PEIRANI / SCHAERER / WOLLNY For once, here’s a band for which the word 'supergroup' is completely apposite. Swiss vocalist Andreas Schaerer, German pianist Michael Wollny, French accordionist Vincent Peirani and his saxophonist compatriot Emile Parisien are four of the brightest and most charismatic stars in European jazz, and they have now formed themselves into a quartet. Between them, they have so far garnered no fewer than twelve German ECHO Jazz awards, as well as just about every distinction of importance in their own countries. They are in their mid- to late thirties, and their new live recording “Out of Land” demonstrates why they are at the very pinnacle of jazz musicians of their generation. It is because they are re-defining the possibilities of their instruments; not just cutting loose from the boundaries of jazz, but doing it in a way which energizes and inspires audiences of all generations.

Liberetto III LARS DANIELSSON “Lars Danielsson has a knack of forming great bands", Stuart Nicholson wrote in Jazzwise in 2014."He manages to realise the potential of his musicians in directions even they had not imagined.” With Liberetto III, he has done it again, and produced a beautifully constructed, and yet deeply felt album. All twelve tracks are compositions by Danielsson, and they sum up what 'Liberetto' is all about: through keeping structure and freedom in such a fine balance, the musical expression acquires an almost weightless sense of poise and easefulness. And binding it all together is the wonderful interaction of the musicians. Whether they are playing unison lines, solo-ing and accompanying, or engaging in interplay, the ball is generously and deftly passed from one player to another.

Trombonist/composer Steve Davis offers a master class on his new release, Think Ahead, in art of reacting to the unpredictable with an elite group of jazz all-stars whose ability to create spontaneously borders on the clairvoyant. For this album, Davis focuses on his original writing and arranging; it’s hardly a secret that Davis is one of the most talented composers on the modern jazz scene. To render these new compositions, Davis assembled a stellar group of masters: the trombonist is joined by saxophonists Steve Wilson and Jimmy Greene, pianist Larry Willis, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Lewis Nash, each deserving the title of “jazz giant” in their own right. In fact, it was this precise ensemble that Davis had in mind when he sat down to write several months before the session. He shares with every member of the ensemble a long and deep history, so he knew that he would have the makings of a truly profound, flawlessly swinging, flat-out burning set of music. In addition to Davis’ originals, Think Ahead also includes two beloved standards, “Polka Dots and Moonbeams” and “Love Walked In,” as well as two jazz classics by departed giants Tony Williams and Bobby Hutcherson, “Warrior” and “Little B’s Poem,” respectively. “I’ve been deeply involved with everyone in this band on not only a professional level but as friends for decades,” Davis says. “So it was more than an honor to have this group together.” The resulting record is an inspired set of straight-ahead jazz that will be a favorite for years to come.
