UPDATE WITH PRESIDENT NICK HOOPER
THE BREEDING SEASON IS IN FULL swing and we wish all our members the best of luck with their upcoming foalings and subsequent matings. It is an exciting time of year and with the restrictions of COVID-19 that excitement is sure to be amplified now that lockdown measures are slowly easing. For those who are breeding their mare this season, the new announcements on the Vicbred first win bonus have created food for your breeding thoughts. The increased bonuses for 2021 foals (bred this season) are part of a range of reforms and increased benefits for being Vicbred. Our proposed COVID-19 breeding stimulus was unsuccessful, but the increased first win bonuses provide a solid alternative which will hopefully add value to your resulting foal. If your mare is Victorian based - and the resultant foal has a Victorian brand the increase from $7000 to $9000 is a welcome increase. The $12,000 first win bonus for breeding a Victorian mare to an Australasian born stallion physically standing in Victoria creates added incentive for breeders to consider our best colts when picking a consort for their mare. We hope that the potential return on investment will encourage breeders to increase their breedings this season and beyond. We are of the view that this support for our best colts is an important part of the overall industry. If our colts stand at stud and have success that money is more likely to remain in our industry,
given they are likely to be locally owned. Given we have access to the best sires in the world of both gaits, the quality of our best horses is reaching world class. We have seen that in recent times with our pacers in North America and while fewer of our trotters have ventured overseas, the small pool have proven they are close to the best. Acceptance of these facts makes one recognise that our best colts will make viable sires. The increased first win bonuses are only the first announcement of what we hope will be a number of other reforms and improvements that we have been discussing with Harness Racing Victoria. Both parties are committed to reviewing and increasing the first win bonuses in years to come, pending budgets of course. The second announcement was the increase in prizemoney on “Humbletonian Day” at Maryborough, where every race on the program carried $10,000. This meant that all eligible winners took away in the order of $13,000 for their first win. Coupled with that is the announcement of 36 $10,000 Vicbred Platinum Maidens to be held through out 2021 across all ages and both gaits. The breeders’ bonuses for the 2yo and 3yo age races therefore increase to $1000 for the winning breeder of these races. HBV are of the view that increased first win bonuses and significant prizemoney for a maiden win provide all breeders and owners a significant target to aim at for every Vicbred horse. Fast forward a few years where a Vicbred Trackbred October 2020 | 3
UPDATE WITH PRESIDENT NICK HOOPER
Pure horse wins a $10,000 maiden and receives an $18,000 pay day. It might not be the same as winning a Vicbred or Breeders Crown final, but it is potentially achievable for all. We are hoping that these increases will help underpin the value of young horses at either the yearling sales or on the private market, thereby helping breeders to obtain a better sales price (should they be selling). We continue to work with HRV on other matters relating to Vicbred and look forward to further announcements over coming months. We do not see these announcements as a finish line and will continue to advocate for better returns through the Vicbred program on an ongoing basis. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING A reminder that the Harness Breeders Victoria annual meeting will be hosted online on Sunday, October 18, at 4pm owing COVID-19 restrictions. Nominations to join the committee will be due no later than the Thursday before the event. Please mark the date in your diaries - in a difficult year, we need a good representation and attendance from our membership base to effect a successful AGM. NEW VICBRED INCENTIVES HOOPER WELCOMES BOOSTED BONUSES
HARNESS BREEDERS VICTORIA PRESIDENT NICK Hooper has welcomed Harness Racing Victoria’s new Vicbred incentives.
making sure our voice is heard at the planning table, and enabling us to deliver our wider program of support and recognition,” Hooper said.
Increased first win bonuses will be introduced for foals born in 2021-22.
AUSTRALIAN and NZ-bred stallions registered in Victoria for this season:
There will be a new Vicbred tier for progeny of Victorianbased mares which are also sired by an Australasian-bred stallion physically standing in Victoria.
TROTTING
This first win bonus will be worth $12,000 - a boost of $5000 on the previous longstanding bonus. The Vicbred basic first win bonus will also go from $7000 to $8000 and the Vicbred Platinum first win bonus to $9000. Hooper said this was an important first step in the reform and further development of the Vicbred program. He said HBV had worked closely with HRV to achieve this outcome to improve returns to breeders who invested in Vicbred eligible stock.

“It is important we highlight that these first win bonus changes will apply from the 2021 foal crop, so that is mares served this year.

“Now is the time to breed to benefit,” he said. The existing $7000 first win bonus will continue to apply to all existing Vicbred eligible horses and those foaled this breeding season. Hooper said the HBV committee had worked hard to ensure that breeders continued to be supported in what was likely to be a difficult season for many, and therefore ensure the viability of the industry at large. “The consultation process has been undertaken in concert with a raft of other activities designed to assist breeders and help secure their investment. “HRV has flagged further announcements to come around nurturing the Victorian breeding industry.

WHERE IT ALL STARTED TWO OF THE BEST IN PROFILE
THE FEATS OF VICTORIAN PACING MEGASTARS RIDE High and Lochinvar Art have captured the imagination of trotsgoers and pundits throughout the country. Each has made the transition to free-for-all company with relatively light racing programs to be regarded as Grand Circuit material of the highest order. PETER WHARTON delves into their pedigrees. Lochinvar Art is a 2015 entire bred in New South Wales. Ride High was bred in Victoria by noted Maryborough breeder Peter Gleeson and is a year older than his great adversary.
Lochinvar Art Photo: Stuart McCormick
Each is a member of the dominant Abercrombie sire line, being grandsons of his most outstanding son, Artsplace. Lochinvar Art is a product of the Woodrow Wilson winner Modern Art 1:50.4 ($1,055,233), whose dam, Wendy M Hanover, ranked as a sister to the world champion racehorse and influential sire Western Hanover 1:50.8 ($2,541,647) and a half-sister to the dam of the Meadowlands Pace winner A Rocknroll Dance 1:47.4 ($2,441,164), now making an impact as a sire in America and Australia. On the other hand, Ride High is a son of the dual US Breeders Crown winner and champion sire Art Major 1:48.8 ($3,273,217), a descendant of the prized matron Romola Hanover and a member of the same maternal family as successful sires Captaintreacherous, Perfect Art, Real Artist and Romeo Hanover. Lochinvar Art’s dam, Ponder In Paris, won four races at the Victorian provincials and took a record of 1:56.5, while Ride High’s dam All The Magic raced only three times for one minor placing. Lochinvar Art and Ride High are the second and third foals of their dams respectively. Besides Ride High, All The Magic is also the dam of a top racemare in Rocknroll Magic (1:54.5), winner of 24 races including the Breeders Crown and Vicbred 3yo finals and $466,183; the Vicbred Silver and Bendigo Guineas winner Always Fast 1:54.5 ($89,860); and All A Breeze (1:55.2). Ponder In Paris left only one other foal, Roseuponher (1:55.5) - a sister to Lochinvar Art and the winner of four races in country NSW and $31,166.
Ride High Photo: Stuart McCormick Ride High and Lochinvar Art belong to two of the most successful maternal families in the Australian trotting stud book. Ride High is a member of the tribe founded in North America in 1849 by the Blind Tuckahoe mare Fanny Fern and belongs to its strongest branch, that established by the Demonio mare Trix Pointer, which was imported to New Zealand by Freeman Holmes. Ride High is 16 times removed from Fanny Fern. This family was established with some purpose in Australia by the Mark Lobell mare Hot Foot. A sister to the Queensland Derby and Ballarat Cup winner Doubter 1:56.6TT ($150,786) and a half-sister to the NSW Pink Bonnet winner Precise, Hot Foot, which was unraced, left 10 winners and four winner-producing daughters including a top racemare and Vicbred champion in Larrakeyah Lady

(2:02.5), the multiple Moonee Valley winner Avant Garde (2:01.7) and Kia Kaha (1:57.8), the winner of 42 races and $115,433.
My Cherie ($338,265), Katies Secret ($150,950), All Hotted Up (NSW Derby heat), Kaboom ($112,440) and Ned Pepper ($143,580).
From the Larrakeyah Lady branch and to which Ride High belongs, top horses the calibre of Safe And Sound (A. G. Hunter Cup), Major Secret (NSW Derby), Beauty Secret (Vic. Oaks and Breeders Crown), Out To Play (Vicbred 3yo final), The Good Times (Tatlow Memorial), Major Times, Exciteusinthecity and others, also belong.
Both Ride High and Lochinvar Art have a proliferation of the blood of Meadow Skipper.
Lochinvar Art’s family traces back through the champion Rey De Oro mare Parisienne to the taproot Bessie B, a Young Irvington mare foaled in 1897 in New Zealand. He is eleven times removed from Bessie B.
Lochinvar Art also carries a desirable 3x4 cross to Abercrombie.
Immediate relatives of Lochinvar Art include Mind The Wire 1:51.9 (Queensland Lord Mayor’s Cup), Zaguar ($121,718), Victoria Oaks and Oceania El Dorado winner
Lochinvar Art can boast no fewer than 10 strains – six by Albatross and four by Most Happy Fella - while Ride High’s family tree shows eight strains including three each of Albatross and Most Happy Fella.
Interestingly, the great Nevele R Stud sire Live Or Die appears on the distaff side of the pedigrees of both Ride High and Lochinvar Art.

Martin Hartnett with his wife Kaye
VALE MARTIN HARTNETT SALUTE TO HIGHLY REGARDED BREEDER
ILLAWONG IS A NAME SYNONYMOUS WITH Victorian trotting ranks. It was the racing handle of breeding icon Martin Hartnett. Sadly, Hartnett died in late August after a battle with cancer and the harness racing industry is much the poorer for his passing. Hartnett and his wife Kaye bred and raced hundreds of winners - almost exclusively trotters. His contribution to the standardbred breeding industry was recognised in 2015 when he received Harness Breeders Victoria’s Ian Daff Memorial Award. Ironically, it was a pacer - talented filly El Trafford -which contributed significantly to Hartnett developing a love for harness racing which would go on for four decades.
Jodi Quinlan shared a similar level of success as a trainer with Hartnett, with none better than Illawong Armstrong (Majestic Son Ca). He had 18 wins for $230,000 and took a career-best mark of 1:56, with a group 1 win in the 2014 Vicbred Platinum Home Grown Classic for 2yos. Illawong Armstrong was out of outstanding broodmare Lunar Landing, which also produced four-time group 1 winner Spidergirl (Yankee Spider US) 1:56.2, 20 win, $317,000; Illawong Moonshine (Yankee Spider US) 1:58.1, 10 wins; and Illawong Stardust (Muscle Hill US) 1:58.7, 4 wins. Quinlan has also had 2016 Redwood Classic winner Illawaong Byron (Muscle Mass US) 1:59.7. 15 wins, $173,000.
He gradually built his breeding empire and it was with trainer Ross Sugars that he had some of his most memorable moments on the racetrack.
Illawong Maestro (Grinfromeartoear US) 1:53.1, 16 wins, $137,000, and multiple group 1-placed Illawong Ian (Keystone Salute US) 25 wins, $21,000 are among the many others her gave Hartnett success.
Illawong Helios (by Majestic Son Ca) provided some of the best of them, beginning with victory in the 2014 group 1 Victoria Trotters’ Derby.
The Illawong name will continue in Hartnett’s memory for some years yet.
She would go on to complement other group 1 placings with group 2 and 3 wins in putting together career record of 19 wins for $272,000 in stakes. Trackbred October 2020 | 9
NOEL RIDGE - VICTORIAN HARNESS RACING HERITAGE COLLECTION, BENDIGO
THE STORY OF BELMONT STUD BUSST, GLASHEEN MEN OF VISION TODAY’S HARNESS RACING INDUSTRY OWES MUCH to these standardbred visionaries of the early 1900s. Busst – a Bendigo businessman with hotel and farming interests – and Glasheen – a Charlton trainer-driver – operated Belmont Stud at Huntly near Bendigo.
Voyage’s reputation preceded him to the racetrack. When he was produced at the Richmond Racecourse in 1916 for the main Victorian classic for young trotters, the Futurity Stakes, all but one of rivals pulled out.
The story of Belmont Stud started in 1908 when George Greaves, licensee of the Albion Hotel in Bendigo, set it up on leased land at Mandurang, 10 kilometres southeast of Bendigo. When the Tye brothers, owners of the Allendale Stock Farm at Mentone disposed of stock in 1911, Greaves was quick to buy the stallion First Voyage (1908, Bon Voyage US-Elsie Downs US) for 235 guineas. He also acquired an additional two stallions, Billy Mac US and New Zealand pacer Dan Patch (not to be confused with the US legend of the same name). Greaves also purchased three imported broodmares including Blonde Grattan (1901, Grattan-Blonde Beauty). She was a gem at stud, with her first 10 foals all won races. In 1913, George Greaves disposed of the entire Belmont operation to Busst and Glasheen, the grandfather of the “Pacing Priest” Fr Brian Glasheen. The Bendigo Advertiser reported on the clearing sale: Cordner, Reynell and Co., had a very successful clearing sale at the Belmont Stud Farm. First Voyage and Dan Patch each realised 550 guineas, and were purchased by Mr A. Williams, on behalf of buyers Busst and Glasheen, who intend establishing a stud farm to the north of Bendigo. Blonde Grattan and Crucible S were bought by Mr Williams for 95 and 60 guineas respectively. Their young progeny were also bought for the new Belmont location. (Grand Voyage, future Hall of Fame trotter was one of the young horses to change hands). The partners relocated the stud from Mandurang to Huntly on the flats of the Bendigo Creek, just a few hundred metres as the crow flies from Matchett and Crowe’s Adelaide Hill Stud. Glasheen trained the stock from the breeding program. One of them, the future Hall of Fame trotter Grand
At his second start in January 1917, the three-year-old won from 60 yards behind against older horses at the Richmond track in a time barely slower than in which the Richmond Cup, run the same day, was decided. As a rising five-year-old Grand Voyage defeated the hoppled pacers for the first time, subsequently a common sight. In June 1919 he won twice on the day at Epping (Harold Park) in Sydney, each time setting a record. Then at the Royal Melbourne Show at the Melbourne Showgrounds he set a mile record of 2:16 3/5 from the very good pacer Sarilla, the winner of 23 races at Richmond. In 1921, back in Sydney, Grand Voyage reduced the winning record at Epping to 2:13. After winning the first Boort Cup from the handicap of 280 yards, Grand Voyage was taken to New Zealand, where he won the 1922 Otahuhu Cup at Alexandra Park in Auckland worth 1000 sovereigns (then £2000) from 48 yards against the best pacers NZ had to offer. On his return to Australia he won further races including the original Bendigo Cup at the Bendigo Jockey Club track at Epsom. Grand Voyage went on to win 37 races. The Belmont Stud and racing partnership ended only 11 years after it began. Under instructions from Messrs H. Busst and P. Glasheen, Trackbred October 2020 | 10
proprietors, Campbell and Sons, auctioneers, will sell by auction on Tuesday, March 11,1924 at the City Horse Bazaar, the whole of the trotting stock, sulkies, and gear of the famous Belmont Stud Farm, Huntly, Victoria (The Herald, January 30, 1924).
Imported as a two-year-old in 1910 by Allendale Stock Farm, he stood at Belmont Stud 1915-1917. He sired only 11, including Willie Mac 2.19, Rowdy Mac 2.23 and Royal Mac. One of his daughters is the ancestor of Gambling Raid (2.09.6), winner of a 1959 Inter Dominion heat. FIRST VOYAGE (Tr,TT2.18.4), 1908, by Bon Voyage from Elsie Downs Elsie Downs was imported carried the unborn First Voyage by Allendale Stock Farm. He stood at Belmont Stud 1916-1923, then at Melton until his death in 1935. After racing, he sired 136 winners, 78 trotters and 58 pacers including Grand Voyage, Huon Voyage, First Cast and Surprise Journey. First Voyage was the first Australian stallion to sire 100 winners.
Busst died in 1933, while Glasheen continued to train and drive, and died in 1946. Considered by many to be Australia’s leading trotting driver, Paddy Glasheen died suddenly at the residence of his son at Young, NSW. Aged 75 at his death, he was in good spirits right up to his sudden death and at the time had a team of horses in training. (Narrandera Argus, November 5, 1946). Busst served as Victorian Owners and Breeders Association president for 10 years. He was also Trotting Appeal Board member, Bendigo Trotting Club member, Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria life member and Bendigo Agricultural Society councillor. Busst and Glasheen achieved much in the short time the stud operated. Belmont stood three stallions, originally at Mandurang for George Grieves and then at Huntly for Busst and Glasheen DAN PATCH NZ (P.TT. 2.9.4) 1902 by Rothschild from Ruahine He was the sire of 25, including Belle Patch 2:13.0, Bronze Patch 2:15.4 and Ivy Patch 2:17.0. Belle Patch, through the Classic Families A13 Fair Nell family, is the ancestor of Dons Ayr 1945 (2:07.8), Teeny Rena 1962 (2:04.3), Jikk Adios 1976 (1:59.9, $251,740), Quantum Lobell 1991 (1:53.1, $442,592), Elite Rena 1992 (1:59.8, $152,847 and the three times Inter Dominion champion Our Sir Vancelot 1990 (1:55.4, $2,197,990). Inter Dominion winners Dans Son and Bold David, as well as the smart trotter Sparkling Success, all descend from Belle Patch
First Voyage’s daughters are ancestors of an impressive array of high class pacers and trotters including: Bingen Redmond, Harwood Brigade, Prince Mimosa, Nancy Irene, Zig Zag, Abidair, Did It Alone, Roman Chapel, Cooma Maree, Just Money, Illawong Ian, Illawong Byron, My Lesson, Crescent Glory and $2 million earner Flashing Red. Family Ties
A DECLARED SUCCESS JOHN MEADE IS A WESTERN VICTORIAN horsemen with a love of the trotter. He has been fortunate to enjoy success at the highest level with the gait as a breeder, owner, trainer and driver. And much of it stems back to a friendship his father had with prominent Terang standardbred breeders Graham and Clare Pearson. “Graeme and my father were good mates.” Pearson’s influence in the breeding game goes back more than five decades to likes of 1965 Raider’s Design mare Lucy Clare.
Valley, and won a 1985 Inter Dominion heat and 1985 RC Freestone Cup. Game Ebony (Black Gamecock US) followed with 29 wins and $181,000 in stakes with victories in the VL Dullard Cup and EB Cochran Cup in 1987 and then the 1988 Inter Dominion consolation. Mister Everest (Mt Everest US) won the 1990 Chris Howe Cup. Downsouth Clare was unable to have the same impact as her dam with her progeny, but one of her daughters would ensure the family line was continued. That was Idol Clare (Maori’s Idol).
She left her mark as a broodmare in no uncertain terms, producing four winners from four foals to get to the races.
She was to have just one foal - the unraced Mary Clare (Keystone Crosby US), but that would be enough.
Lucy Clare’s first was Downsouth Clare (by Caliburn US), which was to win 19 times and be placed on 44 occasions for $101,000 for legendary trainer-driver Dick Lee in days when earning $100,000 was a significant achievement.
Meade said he initially investigated the possibility of acquiring Idol Clare, but she was out of reach financially – so he opted for the Keystone Crosby filly, which would be named after his wife Mary.
She conquered the mighty Scotch Notch to take out the 1983 Australasian Trotters’ Championship at Moonee
And this is where Meade joined the party.

Trackbred October 2020 | 12
Mary Clare did not race owing to a tendon issue, but she would prove to be prolific-producing broodmare, with Meade getting six foals and three winners out of her to ensure the influence of the family would continue on the track. Her first foal was Fire Chase (Keystone Salute US), which won twice and has gone on leave two winners to date - Fiery Annie (Angus Hall US) and Wisp Of Smoke (Dejarmbro US). Wisp Of Smoke has had two wins, including a highly impressive performance at Ballarat on September 2. Virginaconnection (Framework US) had just the one win, but is the dam of Rum Junction (Bacardi Lindy US), which has already made an impression by winning the 2019 group 1 Vicbred Platinum Home Grown Classic for 3yo fillies.
She is the dam of four winners, including the top class Sparkling Success (Great Success US). Although Sparkling Success has not won since September 2018, when injury ended plans for him to race in the United States, his record speaks for itself with the 2018 Great Southern Star headlining 44 wins, $427,000 and career-best mile rate of 1:53.9. Diamond Insitu has also had two first-time winners this year - 5yo I Stand Alone (Danny Bouchea) on debut at Terang in April and 3yo Sierra Kea (Peak Dnk) at Maryborough in August. With Fire Chase and Diamond Insitu with unraced foals on the ground and another generation to one day head to stud, this family line which began all those years ago with Lucy Clare has much more to offer.
And then there is Diamond Insitu (Cr Commando US), which has made the biggest impact of all in the breeding barn after stringhalts thwarted any chance she had of racing.

Maternal Instincts BROODMARES LEAVING THEIR MARK
MONA MISS
ASHLEES BABE
Great Western trainer Peter Manning was the “king of the kids” for many years – producing a seemingly endless supply of smart two-year-olds. Lynden Bye Bye US filly MONA MISS was among them in the late 1980s and early 1990s. All her six career wins were in her juvenile season. She did not race beyond a three-year-old. She went to stud and was an immediate success, with her first foal getting to the races being outstanding filly group 1-winning filly Sheza Mona (Nuke Of Earl US) 1:53.3, 33 wins, $349,396. She would be one of six foals of Mona Miss to race. While her time as a broodmare was unable to match her track record, Sheza Mona still left four winners, among them being two-time winner Sheza Beach Babe (Beach Towel US). Now Sheza Beach Babe has two winners from two foals to race. Ve Rapido (Julius Caesar NZ) is a two-time winner and her full-brother Iron Chariot has joined winning ranks, with the three-year-old opening his account at Charlton on September 28. Iron Chariot was bred by SG DP and GJ Murphy.
There were fewer better mares than ASHLEES BABE in the early 2000s. A 1999 daughter of Armbro Operative US and Kentucky US mare Ashlee, Ashlees Babe won 22 of just 32 starts for earnings of $334,117. She began her career at three, having only two provincial starts in that season as she won her first 10 starts. He career victories included three group 1s – the Vicbred Super Series 3yo and 4yo titles, and Queensland Oaks. Ashlees Babe’s racing career was always going to be tough to follow in the breeding barn, but she managed to five winners from five foals to get the races – Artegra (Art Major US) 14 wins, Gypsy Babe (Mach Three Ca) 12 wins, Scarlet Babe (Western Terror US) 12 wins, Ashlees Gem (Christian Cullen NZ) 2 wins and Sir Daniel (Rock N Roll Heaven US) 1 win. Two are still racing and winning. The now 10-year-old Artegra has been racing in Victoria after expansive stints in NSW and South Australia, and brought up his first win in the state at Mildura on August 14. Six-year-old Scarlet Babe has spent her entire career in NSW, with her latest wins being at Bathurst in April.
LA MACHANE LA MACHANE was a top class filly on the racetrack. Now she is passing on her racing qualities to her progeny. She has two foals of racing age and each is a winner. A 2008 daughter of Bettors Delight US, La Machane was one of four winners produced by unraced Die Laughing US mare Machane (bred by the KJ Newbound Family Trust). Bred by the now late Jack and Nola Munnerley, La Machane won 20 of 61 starts, earning $335,268 and had a career-best mile rate of 1:54.6. She was second in two group 1 races as a two-year-old and had a group 1 third as a three-year-old. La Machane finally broke through at that level in the 2013 Vicbred Super Series 4yo mares final. La Puddie (Somebeachsomewhere US) is her first foal. He did not race until he was a three-year-old and his first win in Ballarat on July 9. Her second foal La Captain (Captaintreacherous US) made his two winners almost within a month – tasting success for the first time at Charlton on August 17.
SHAKE IT MAMA What a filly SHAKE IT MAMA was. She won 15 of 46 starts for $257,588, capturing the group 1 Bathurst Gold Tiara as a two-year-old, group 1 Australian Oaks and in open age the listed Tailamade Lombo. While she has not been quite as prolific as a broodmare she does boast 100 per cent strike with her only two foals to the races being handy performers. Four-year-old gelding Mamas New Dude (Western Terror US) had 10th win at Bendigo on August 12 and three-year-old Cool Rocking Daddy (A Rocknroll Dance US) had his fifth win in his first season of racing at Shepparton on August 11. Each was bred by DJ Sheppard, who also bred Shake It Mama.

PAINTED BLACK
SALLY ANNS FUTURE
Four foals to the races for four winners. That is the record for broodmare PAINTED BLACK. A daughter of Armbro Aussie US and Merron’s Choice (Magnus Apollo US) 15 wins, Painted Black had a successful race career with seven wins. She was to have her biggest impact through with her first foal to race – Decorated Jasper (Village Jasper US) 1:53.5, 19 wins, $430,000. His biggest win came in the group 2 2012 group Bendigo Cup after fourths in the 2008 and 2010 Victoria Cups. Painted Black has also produced Desiring Kate (Real Desire US) 1:54.9. 6 wins; Decorated Lady (Village Jasper US) 1:58.7, 5 wins; and Cracked Pepper (Shadow Play US) 1:56.1, 4 wins. The five-year-old Cracked Pepper is the only offspring still racing, with his latest win coming at Echuca in August. Painted Black was bred by Noel Simpson Consolidated, and raced by and bred from by GE Mannington, KJ , PL and PA Rowse.
SALLY ANNS FUTURE gave her connections a fun time on the racetrack. She won six races and was placed 20 times, but it has been in the breeding barn where she continues to make a mark. Her first trotting foal Justabitlooney (Riegle Lobell US) won 14 races and had gone to produce three winners – Justabitcoco (Bacardi Lindy US) 1:59.4, 17 wins, $116,000; Justabitnoisy (Lawman US) 17 wins, $177,000; and Justabitlikemum (Great Success US) 13 wins, $83,000. Group 3 winner Red Samurai (Sundon US) was the next to make his presence felt with 24 wins and $230,000 as he reached free-for-all class. Karaka Tooth (Safely Kept US) only won for races, but she is the dam top class mare Red Hot Tooth (Yankee Paco US), which has gone 1:55.2 with more than 22 wins, including a run of four in the space of five starts through March-April and then September. Red Samurai has had limited opportunities to stud, but he has three wins from five starters and all this season in Peachee, Starlight Red and Cmon Carl Lee.
LARRAKEYAH LADY The family of Larrakeyah Lady’s just keeps giving. She left nine winners in her own right - headed up by 2002 AG Hunter Cup winner Safe And Sound (Safely Kept US) 1:57, 33 wins $995,000. He also made a mark as a sire, but is has been Larrakeyah Lady’s daughters who have led the way to a dynasty of winners. GO DANCING (A Rocknroll Dance US) is among the latest additions to the winners’ list, being out of Celebrity Guest (Mach Three Ca), which in turn was out of a daughter of Larrakeyah Lady in Celebrity Ball (Presidential Ball US). Go Dancing won on debut at Maryborough on September 21 for breeders PS Gleeson and BJ Cameron. Treachery (Captaintreacherous US) is another family members making an impression, with wins at her first three starts. She is out Lovelist (Always A Virgin US) – a daughter of Lifeline (Classic Garry) and granddaughter of Larrakeyah Lady. And of course Ride High is also a member of the family.
KABBALAH KAREN B Ca What a producer the Canadian-bred KABBALAH KAREN B is proving to be. The now US-based Our Little General (Mach Three Ca) 1:49.8 led the way as her first foal to get to the races, with three group 1s among 15 wins in Australia. Kasbah Kid (Art Major US) 1:53.1 has built up an impressive record with back-to-back wins at Melton in September capping off a consistent season. Earlier in the year Beautiful Woman (Art Major US) launched her career, with the three-year-old filly putting together three wins on end. Now there is two-year-old filly Ladies In Red (Mach Three Ca), which won on debut at Shepparton in September. Kasbah Kid. Photo:Stuart McCormick

EARLY MEMBERSHIP REWARDED
HARNESS BREEDERS VICTORIA IN ASSOCIATION with Niota Bloodstock and Alabar offered free services as prizes in a HBV early bird membership draw for those who paid up before September.
Niota, and Peter Fizgerald, who won a service to firstseason pacing stallion The Storm Inside from Alabar.. Gus Underwood also won a service to trotting stallion Kvintet Avenger from Niota.
Congratulations to major winners Robert Colquhoun, who won a service to trotting sire Great Success from
We spoke to Robert Colquhoun and Peter Fitzgerald about their background in harness racing.
LEARNING FROM THE BEST ROBERT COLQUHOUN HAS ALWAYS BEEN AROUND horses. With his late grandfather Peter Murrell a harness racing breeder, owner and trainer, there was always a big chance he would also be involved in the sport. It wasn’t his grandfather’s choice for him though. “He tried to steer me away,” Colquhoun said. So when it came to entering the workforce, Colquhoun took up a motor mechanic apprenticeship. However, when you grow up with a close association with Graeme and Dot Lang, and their family, it goes without saying the harness racing bug is going to get you in some form. And with him describing Graeme Lang being like another grandfather, this is exactly the path Colquhoun followed. As well as those early years with the Langs, Colquhoun has either worked with or helped out the likes of trainers Merv Williamson, Ray Pace, Jodi Quinlan and Lance Justice at various times. It has been a matter of learning from the best. While he knows all about the cut and thrust of the industry having spent time at the coal face harness racing and like anyone possesses a strong desire for success, there has also been another side to the time Colquhoun is able to spend with horses. He was involved in a road accident in 2013 - leaving him unable to continue in his trade as a motor mechanic and with some mental scars. Colquhoun having horses provided an important outlet for him in tough times. “It’s great to just be able go out and watch them.”
Robert Colquhoun with Breakmyheart And he has the perfect setting to do it on 20 acres at Majorca, south-east of Maryborough in Central Victoria. It is a property originally acquired by his grandparents in the early 1980s as a weekend getaway. Colquhoun has tried his hand at all aspects of the industry. He’s been a driver, breeder, owner and trainer. Colquhoun said he had tried his luck with breeding, but the success he has had as trainer has come with purchases he has picked up at the Echuca horse sales. Breakmyheart was the first horse he trained and would be his first winner.

A grey mare, she cost him just $150.
She will be going to first-season stallion Soho Tribeca.
The daughter of Jet Laag had previously won four races. Colquhoun was patient and at her 22nd start for him at Bendigo on April 1, 2015, gave him his first win as a trainer.
And thanks to Harness Breeders Victoria, Truscott Sun is off to proven sire Great Success complements of Niota Bloodstock.
He didn’t have to wait long for his next win.
Colquhoun won the free service to Great Success in an HBV membership early bird draw.
Just 15 days later trotter Truscott Sun, another bargain buy, saluted at her first start for him at Maryborough.
He said Truscott Sun was retired after one start off a break of more than three years.
Luck has not gone Colquhoun’s way since.
Colquhoun said he was just about to finalise a stud booking for her when the prize went his way.
There’s no doubt something he would like to achieve is training a winner he has bred.
“It was a bit of shock.
While he has not come up trumps so far, he’s hoping his fortunes are about to turn.
“It’s a great opportunity to be able to send a mare to a stallion of the standing of Great Success.”
He has a Kvintet Avenger two-year-old colt out of Running On Bacardi (by Bacardi Lindy), but what he is excited about is two mares he is sending to stud for the first time this season - Izakatie and Truscott Sun.
He said he was extremely grateful to HBV for the opportunity.
Izakatie (Four Starzzz Shark Ca) was given to him by Maree and John Caldow after she failed to make it to the track.
FIGHTING FITZ IT IS A COMMON STORY. An interest in harness racing being passed from generation to generation. This is the story for Harrow breeder and owner Peter Fitzgerald. It all started for him through his uncle, Horsham horseman Les Jones. “I’d spend school holidays with him.” While that sowed the seed, it was not until later in life that Fitzgerald, 76, began to get seriously engaged. He found a 1987 Hilarious Way filly. Not only would Hilarious Fitz be a more than handy performer on the track, but also a foundation broodmare for Fitzgerald. She won three races as Fitzgerald and Terang trainerdriver Robert Arundell forged what would be a long lasting association
Jane Fitz (by Tarzan Blue Chip US) won six races, but it was Hi Ho Fitz (Walton Hanover US) which shone the brightest in Arundell’s and later Peter Manning’s care with 16 wins and 21 placings from 64 starts and $96,000 in stakes. Then it was Hi Ho Fitz’s turn at stud, producing four winners in Big Mumma Fitz (Armbro Operative US) 5 wins, Ritzy Fitz (Presidential Ball US) 5 wins, Sammy Fitz (Shadow Play US) 2 wins and Blue Vein Fitz (Betterthancheddar US), which is a last-start winner at Terang in May this year. So who is going to be the next “Fitz” bred by Fitzgerald now that he has a free service to first season stallion The Storm Inside, won in Harness Breeders Victoria’s early bird membership draw? He is going to use the service with Ritzy Fitz, which already a Western Terror 2yo filly.
Hilarious Fitz would leave two winners.
