In the ’80s and ’90s, Miyake’s Japaneseinspired designs, full of drapes and billowy fabrics, made him an icon. L’eau d’Issey was launched in 1992 by Jacques Cavallier. Part of Kiehl’s Aromatic Blends, the Vetiver & Black Tea is most potent after sundown. Introduced in 2014, the sweet fragrance of vetiver is paired with the citrus aspects of black tea to create a warm, earthy blend. Grown and harvested in Haiti, vetiver oil possesses woody balsamic tones that murmur against rich black tea. Cultivated in the Sri Lankan mountains, this black tea essence emanates a fine quality of olfactive purity. Terry de Gunzburg Terryfic Oud EDP, RM799 (100ml)

Shireen has always had a penchant for oud and dark scents, reminiscent of her days living in the Middle East, when she would be on the lookout for extraordinary concoctions. BAZAAR discovers why she finds woody notes intoxicating and intriguing. Noir scents are making a major comeback. Why do you think more fragrances now are careening towards a mysterious, sexy woman? I can understand why noir scents have become an obsession in recent years, and I'm a big fan of them. They carry a certain connotation of emotional intensity which perfume lovers look for; it’s in our desire to be mysterious. My personal favourites include Tom Ford’s Black Orchid and Chanel’s Coco Noir. What makes a scent dark, and sensual? Scents that are woody, musky, leathery, and more on the complex side. Many fragrances containing oud, the liquid gold of perfumes, have this effect for me. I like the intense scent it leaves on the skin and the enigmatic and sensual aura it creates around you, long after you’re gone.

“Flowers are always guest stars in a story,” says Francis Kurkdjian, the perfumer who created some of fashion’s most popular fragrances—Burberry’s roseinfused My Burberry and its jasmine-topped counterpart, My Burberry Black, as well as his own line. “For a bright, sunny feeling, I might use orange blossoms.” For a sexier edge, Kurkdjian explains, florals can’t stand alone. They need something weightier, like vanilla, that can suggest physical pleasure, a promise of sweetness. “Or you add patchouli to make it more exotic and mysterious.”

MOST ARTISANAL FRAGRANCE DIPTYQUE EAU DES SENS, RM519 (100ML)
Diptyque’s latest offering is a complete volte-face from its existing scents. Created to excite and obfuscate the senses, bitter orange and juniper berries entice at first spritz, before orange blossom, patchouli, and angelica spark our curiosities. The fragrance mystery remains unsolved and uncategorisable, ebbing between familiarity and total novelty. That, is what makes this scent so beautiful.
108 HARPER’S BAZAAR JUNE 2016
Diptyque’s first store on 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris, originally a downtrodden pub, sold curios sourced from its founders’s worldly adventures. Slowly, it transformed into a kitsch outlet of art, wallpaper, fabrics, and eventually, scents, with the first release of L’eau. Celebrating 50 years of memories marked by Dipytque scents, 34 Boulevard Saint Germain captures notes taken from its most famous bottles— roses from L’Ombre dans l’Eau; spices, pink peppercorn, and citrus from L’Eau; and the geraniums and tuberoses that form Do Son.

Notes of Bulgarian roses and blackcurrant leaves, utterly unique to Diptyque, evoke strolls through a rambling English garden where autumnal moss and fallen petals of the Damask rose abound. L’Ombre dans l’Eau’s storytelling capability makes it a rare gem among artisanal fragrances.

Diptyque’s Eau Rose is a tribute to the roses that embrace their thorns. The fragrance is a romantic, sensorial evolution; Damask and Centifolia rose petals are roused by bright bergamot and lychee, then caressed by honey and cedar. Damask roses were discovered in ancient Syria, while Centifolia roses are complex hybrids founded around the 17th century. Marry the two precious flowers—Damask must be harvested by sunrise, Centifolia has to be created through careful cultivation—and the luxurious scent of Eau Rose is born.

Fusing flowers with warm woods and spice, the floriental fragrance family is sensual and seductive. Weighty oriental notes bring the fragrance forward while airy florals pull it back. For Fly FM DJ Zher, great fragrances don’t just define a moment—they create them. Her past experience—“I used to sell fragrances!”—affirms her expertise in sussing out the best scents as a judge for the BAZAAR Fragrance Awards. Revisiting the fragrances of years past, do you discover a renewed interest, or do they hold the same intrigue as before? My impression rarely changes but some re-encounters bring up how they’re still relevant after so many years, such as Issey Miyake’s classic L’Eau d’Issey. What makes a great fragrance? Like great works of art, it should invoke emotion. It is subjective to each person, but it should speak to you at that moment in your life because, after all, a good fragrance should be a reflection of it. Why do you think noir scents are making a major comeback now? Perhaps they never really went out of style. Also, sensuality is celebrated more than ever now, and the definition of noir scents is broader than before. What is your most memorable moment with a particular scent? Sunscreen mixed with sea water. I used to go to the beach with my family very often as a kid, and that scent, especially when locked into my hair after a long day out, reminds me of sunsets and satays that we would usually get after.

Kiehl’s Nashi Blossom & Pink Grapefuit conjures visions of the Kyoto gardens in Japan, a tranquil paradise verdant with the pear trees from which Nashi blossoms bloom. Launched in 2012, this fragrance is part of the Aromatic Blends collection, which features carefully harvested ingredients in small combinations to naturally highlight each pure note. The rind and pulp of the pink grapefruit, native to Brazil, are used for their contrasting aromatic qualities, while a unique extraction technique was used to recreate the Nashi scent, capturing its soft aromas while respecting the delicate nature of the flower. Invigorating yet soothing with finishing notes of soy milk and white musk, this fragrance is an exotic marriage.
The fashion mogul often celebrates her love for florals with fragrances and garden parties. Along with the release of Tory Burch’s Jolie Fleur collection, BAZAAR speaks scents with her. Tell us about your garden ... I worked with landscape artist Perry Guillot on the layout, which was inspired by the garden’s original lawn dating back to 1929. We actually pulled archival photos and recreated the planted bed areas. Introducing Jolie Fleur fragrances ... Rose is a classic fragrance that epitomises femininity; Verte is centred on lily of the valley—it has an easygoing, tomboy quality that I love; and with Bleue, we tempered the tuberose, a heady scent on its own, with grapefruit and vetiver for an understated and elegant mix. Gardening memories ... I get my passion for flowers from my mother, Reva. She loves fresh blooms and is always so creative with them. Signature flower arranging tips ... Starring Adriana Lima, the sensuous campaign for Marc Jacobs Decadence shows the Victoria’s Secret Angel portraying a woman of desire on a carpet with tinges of dark green, imbuing both video and fragrance with secrets and glamour. MARC JACOBS DECADENCE
Setting a whole new standard in fragrances, Marc Jacobs Decadence’s bottle design—reminiscent of a vintage python bag, replete with a tassel and gold chains, in femme fatale green—made a mark when it debuted late last year. His quirky and daring edge, evident in his fashion designs and inspirations, manifest in this scent. An intoxicating cocktail of sensuous Italian plum, saffron, and iris reflects Jacobs’s unusual, yet impeccable taste. At its heart lies the opulent Bulgarian rose, jasmine sambac, and orris, with a dry down of vetiver, papyrus wood, and gildings of amber.

“It’s a behaviour that allows for a party; getting dressed up, sequins, fur, make-up, glamour, and irreverence.” – Marc Jacobs
Johnny Depp, leather, Californian desert plains, and the timeless appeal of a man who knows how to serenade with a guitar—this is masculinity encapsulated. Raw notes of Reggio bergamot and Sichuan pepper top the fragrance, with precious ambergris and a woody base to round it all off. Dior perfumer François Demachy says the scent possesses “a strong and unmistakable masculinity, like the image of a man who transcends time and fashion.” Fronting the fragrance’s ad campaign, Depp, known for his ruggedness, mysterious personality, and chiseled features, is a man who remains one of the most soughtafter thespians of our time.

BOY CHANEL
The love story of Arthur Edward “Boy” Capel and Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel is the inspirational canvas of this exquisite fragrance. Suited up in tailor-made tweed, groomed to perfection with his signature moustache, and with a penchant for adventure, this tall, dark, and handsome suitor captivated Chanel’s heart; he gave her the courage to bring her fashion dreams to light. A sudden tragic end to his life left Chanel with a murmur of him, forever in her heart, but his influences lived on in her passion for cultures, politics, and spiritualism. Capturing this historical two-act in an essence, Chanel nose Olivier Polge looked towards the energetic zests of lemon and grapefruit, as well as the notes of lavender, a clean slate signature of Chanel’s aesthetic. A heart of rose geranium follows on its heels, and then, ghosts of lemongrass, lychee, and orange blossom to end—like memories that will always survive the hands of time. HERMÈS EAU DE NÉROLI DORÉ
“When I started out in the profession of perfumer, I learned to distil raw materials, including orange blossom,” says JeanClaude Ellena, resident perfumer for Hermès. “When you enter the world of stills, you are also immersed in a scent, impregnated with it—you become it.” To celebrate this emblematic moment early in his fragrance journey, Ellena created a cologne that truly encapsulates the beauty of the orange blossom—or neroli. He recalls, “My entire being was fragranced with orange blossom. Where normally one uses very little neroli in fragrances, I used it abundantly, The final flourish: the with abandon, as never before.” Eau de Néroli Doré Eau de Cologne, unveiled
