In the following pages, Mark gives us an insight into his photography business along with some selected pictures from his library www.visionsingolf.com How did it all start? Well, I became interested in photography during art lessons at school when aged 14. I then started a Saturday and holiday job working for a sports and news photo agency in Barnsley, Yorkshire. I Started in the darkroom and worked hard until I was allowed to go out and photograph events. My first picture was published in the Sheffield Star (the daily regional newspaper) when aged 15. It was football match action of the Second Division (now the Championship). Being a keen golfer (7 handicap), footballer and motor sports fan, I specialized in photographing Golf, F1 motor racing and football. After a year or so working for myself I got so busy photographing golf that I did not get time to cover the other sporting events, so from then just concentrated on golf. Visions In Golf In 1987 I set up Visions In Golf. We have been building up our picture library ever since and it now contains over 300,000 images. The site also includes a collection of old images that date back to the mid 1800’s. All the new pictures taken since 2002 are taken on digital cameras and prior to that on transparency film. It’s very time consuming converting these to digital so that’s why there is only a small proportion of the library on the website – but 99% of enquiries are on the site ready. My favourite place of work If I had to choose the most beautiful golf courses in the world I have visited, they would include Torrey Pines, Augusta National, Cypress Point, Pebble Beach in the USA and Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand.

I carry 3 cameras, 5 lenses plus, covers for all the equipment at major events. All but 2 of the cameras packed up at Valderrama as the rain leaked into them. I was left with one camera to cover the event plus, it cost me £500 to get them repaired. Working with the Tour Players Most of the players out on the tour recognise me now as I’ve been around for so long!!! My favourite player of all time would be Seve. He was my boyhood hero so it was fantastic to start photographing him for a living. I loved photographing him as you never knew what he would do next. When I worked with him on photo-shoots he was always a gentleman and professional to work with. I wish him well on his continued recovery.

I have always been fashion conscious and what I wear on the course has always been important to me a) because I like to look good and b) because what you wear very much affects how you play. I struggled to find the right clothes that satisfied both these needs so decided to take the matter into my own hands and design clothes that are both practical and stylish… Clothes that I could adjust to suit how I play and how I like to look… For example I like my trousers to be bootcut. IJP Design is all about fusing fashion with functionality and I’m really pleased with the designs we’re bringing out each collection.

Can you tell us more about the latest collection? I love the latest collection and it’s definitely our best yet! It is really stylish and sophisticated. As always the collection starts with four tartans and leads with the legs, so the rest of the items complement the trousers. We’ve got some great pieces to suit all personalities and occasions, from the classic shirts and tailored trousers to the tartan trousers and more funky items. We’ve also got great waterproof jackets and waterproof trousers which we’ve worked really hard on to make sure they allow full movement, but don’t billow like most of them do, which is a pet hate of mine! I think it’s a really strong collection and I can’t wait to see people wearing it. There have been some shocking Ryder Cup outfits over the years – what would you have the boys wearing if IJP Design were in charge of things? Ha, there have been some memorable outfits! IJP Design would of course be memorable to, for good reasons! I think we would have everyone wearing what they felt comfortable in, but it would be great to see everyone in coordinated outfits - perhaps starting off with some beautifully tailored ‘Ryder Cup Tartans’ which could be a very British fashion statement. What do you hope the future holds for IJP Design? Well our dream is to continue to become one of the leading global sports fashion brands. We’re growing all the time which is great and by the end of the year we’ll be stocked in all 35 main golfing nations. We’re definitely looking at doing a ladies range which I am hoping to be released in 2012 and possibly a kid’s to follow – watch this space! I am just really enjoying seeing

Who is a one or two planer?

In today’s professional game we have a wonderful mix of players who fall either into the one plane category or two plane category: One planers: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Alvaro Quiros, Matt Kuchar, Louis Oosthuizen. Two planers: Retief Goosen, KJ Choi, Stewart Cink, David Toms. Over the years, only a select few can claim to have owned their golf swing. Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Peter Thompson, and Annika Sorenstam are household names with that honour. There are others whom you might never have heard of: Moe Norman, Jimmy Bruen, and George Knudson to name a few. All of these golfers

All golf swings whether they are one or two plane have two motors - the body being one, the arms and club being the other. A one plane swing is more body driven arm responsive. Quiros upper left arm has swung more in and started to hug his chest whilst his right elbow has moved up, behind and away from him. One planer’s bodyweight remains centred.

At the top – Quiros lead arm is swinging close to the same plane as his shoulders have turned on (note lines). A line drawn across

the shoulders should point into a zone that begins at the ball and extends four feet beyond it. One planers should have a limited amount of hip turn and a full 90 degrees shoulder turn or more. Note – Quiros club shaft is pointing left of target.

You can clearly see Cink’s shoulders have turned on a plane almost parallel to the ground like a helicopter blade (note line) with his lead arm swung more up and onto a different plane. His club-shaft points to the right of the target. Two planers should be encouraged to turn their hips vigorously during the backswing aswell as their shoulders.

Mid-way down. Quiros has increased his spine angle from address (even more bent over), organised his right elbow behind his right hip and folded his right forearm so it points at the ball. The club is still behind him but will be carried into the ideal hitting slot by the shoulders and chest unwinding.

Impact – Quiros’ shoulders have unwound (pointing left) much more than Cink’s so much so they have nearly caught his hip turn.

Quiros has moved his rear back through the line due to an increase in spine angle - great for one planers!

Cink is the opposite. His spine angle is almost straight up. The right elbow is in front of his right hip with his left arm pointing at the ball. Note – The club is more in front of him with less unwinding of the chest and shoulders.

Cink’s shoulders and hips are still fairly square to the target line. Quiros right forearm and shaft line up at the ball – Cink’s left arm and shaft line at the ball. Quiros has lost height - Cink has gained height.

Cink has thrusted his hips slightly forwards and off of the line helping to raise his spine a little - great for two planers!

Matteo Manassero is Youngest Winner in European Tour history Matteo Manassero is used to breaking records, so with his maiden victory at the CASTELLÓ MASTERS Costa Azahar in October, he became the youngest winner in European Tour history. His victory at Club de Campo del Mediterráneo at 17 years and 188 days smashed the record held by Danny Lee, who was 18 years and 213 days old when he won the 2008 Johnnie Walker Classic in Perth. The Italian teenager became the youngest winner of the Amateur Championship in 2009. Then a few weeks later, he became the youngest player to win the Silver Medal at The Open Championship finishing tied 13th after playing his first two rounds with Tom Watson and Sergio Garcia. Tom Watson said of the youngster: “He has a passion for the game. That’s what I look for in a young golfer. Technique can be added if necessary but if they don’t have that passion then I am concerned. Matteo has it.” Matteo was the youngest golfer to play in the Masters Tournament and the youngest to make the cut, finishing tied 36th. He is now the youngest full European Tour Member in history beating the previous record held by Spanish legend Seve Ballesteros by 12 days. As Martins hips continue to clear, his left leg becomes visible behind the right leg and we begin to see daylight under his right heel. This Indicates that his weight is shifting to his left side. As the lower body fires the arms react into a powerful lagged position and are perfectly on plane.

The impact position is a result of his excellent downswing sequence lead from his lower body. Points to note – right heel off the ground - belt buckle clearing towards the target - 90% weight on his left side - forearms and shoulders pointing in the same direction as they were in his set up (all allowing him to play his fade shot)

From set-up to this point his spine angle and head angle hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t changed. This is only possible from good leg action which allowed him to turn well off the ball while staying centred. His left arm which is comfortably straight, runs across his shoulder line with the forearms staying connected.

The start of the downswing is ignited by the lower half. His left knee and belt buckle that were very visable in the previous image are now turning towards the ball as his hips are rotating back and want to be first to find the finishing position. As the lower body fires the downswing his arms automatically drop creating lag.

As the lower body clears fully towards the target the left leg straightens as 100% of his weight shifts to his left side which maximizes club head speed. The spine angle, neck and head stay in line as his hands and arms release the club through impact.
