CONDITIONS OF SALE: The sale will be held subject to the Auction Rules and Conditions of Sale drawn up by the British Charolais Cattle Society (based on the National Cattle Breeders Association Warranties). The pedigree information is supplied by breeders to the Society and to their best knowledge and belief, the information contained therein is true and correct. The Purchaser shall at his expense have the right to blood-type for proof of parentage his purchases and rescind the contract if within two months from date of sale the parentage is found to be incorrect and thereafter no claim whatsoever shall lie against the Vendor in respect of such matters. INSURANCE: A representative of H & H Insurance Brokers, will be present at the sale and will be pleased to quote Purchasers for transit and other risks. METHOD OF SALE: All cattle will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers. COMMISSIONS: The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions. REGISTRATIONS: All stock in the Sale are registered with the British Charolais Cattle Society. TRANSFERS: Official Pedigree Transfer Certificates will be dealt with by the Auctioneers and the Breed Society as soon as possible after the Sale. A veterinary officer, appointed by the Society, will check the animals teeth and, in the case of bulls, testicles measure up to the minimum BCCS standard. They will also check for any contagious diseases. The officially appointed BCCS steward will check the animals for any patent defects, such as lameness, etc. Any rejected animal must be forthwith removed from the Sale Premises and returned to the Vendor‚s premises, at the owner’s expense. In order to defray the cost of implementing the warranty conditions a levy shall be charged to the vendor, for every pedigree animal sold. – bulls £5, females £2. Each amount will be + Vat and will be charged to the relevant vendors’ account.

MINIMUM WEIGHT FOR AGE: The Charolais Society have adopted the Minimum Weight For Age Scheme. This scale is available from the BCCS Office, however it is considered weight alone should not be the leading criteria and conformation should be taken into account. Therefore a bull of good conformation but under scale weight would not necessarily be rejected and similarily a bull which has attained the scale weight but of poor conformation may be rejected. All bulls offered for sale must have a Minimum Scrotal Circumference of 13-18 months 34-36cm, 18-24 months 36-38cm and >24 months 38cm. Any bulls found to be below the minimum Society standards will be rejected by the inspectors, and no second opinion shall be sought from a vet. EVERY ANIMAL entered for the Show and Sale, both male and female MUST BE ADEQUATELY TRAINED TO LEAD BY HALTER and MUST BE PARADED FOR INSPECTION and SHOW (if applicable) unless exempted by the Stewards, at the time and place to be notified. Evidence of faults of temperament, vices, etc., may lead to disqualification. All animals must be provided with a serviceable halter, which will become the property of the purchaser. IDENTIFICATION MARKS: All cattle entered for the sale will have their UK tags and tattoo marks examined as an integral part of the pre-sale inspection procedure. Any marks found to have faulty, incorrect or illegible marks will be REJECTED from the sale. Vendors are therefore urged, in their own best interests, to examine the UK tags and tattoo marks of sale cattle before the animal(s) leave their farm, so that faulty marks can be rectified in accordance with the required Society procedures. The use of drugs is totally banned, as undernoted. (i)

Preparation for Sale. Any drug which would affect weight for age, conformation or growth of hair.

(ii) Presentation for Sale. Any drug which would affect soundness or temperament at Inspection, Judging or Auction Sale. The use of Aerosol products are banned in the use of coat preparation for all cattle. The Sale will be held subject to the Auction Rules, Conditions of Sale and Special Regulations of the British Charolais Cattle Society. Particular attention is drawn to the following Society Rules: Members who enter for the Sale in the Catalogue and who do not present their animals will be subject to the following fines - Female entries £50.00 - Male entries £25.00. A Veterinary Surgeon’s Certificate, providing reasonable grounds for withdrawal will, if accepted, eliminate the member of such a fine. The proceeds of sale are guaranteed by the Auctioneers, who will account to Vendors on the day of the Sale. A minimum upset price of 2,000 guineas will be set for all Bulls. RESERVE PRICES: Vendors shall have the right to refuse to accept the final bid for their animals. The auctioneers reserve the right to charge half commission on the amount of the final bid in the case of animals which fail to reach the Vendors reserve price.

No animal may be sold privately before being passed through the Auction Ring and FULL COMMISSION will be charged on the sale of any animal sold by private treaty after the auction. All such transactions MUST BE PASSED THROUGH THE AUCTIONEERS OFFICE. All animals will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and a commission of 5% will be charged by the Auctioneers on all sales and a further lairage levy of 1% will be charged. PRIZE MONEY: (but not trophies) will be withheld unless the winners are sold, either by auction or private treaty. STRAW: A limited amount of bedding straw will be provided by the Auctioneers free of charge. Additional Straw, if required, may be purchased.

ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBVS)

The EBV is the best estimate of an animal's genetic merit for that trait.

ACCURACY

An accuracy value (Acc) is presented with every EBV and gives an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal's EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or its relatives.

CALVING EASE Calving Ease EBVs are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving.

DIR: Direct calving ease indicates how this animal influences the birth of its progeny. Using a bull in the Top 1% for CE direct (+14.5) is predicted to result in approximately 15% fewer assisted calvings in 2 year old heifers compared with using a bull in the Bottom 1% (-20.1). This range is predicted to be smaller in cows. Remember that the dam’s genetics and management are significant factors influencing calving ease in any mating. DTRS: Daughter’s calving ease indicates how well the animal produces daughters that have easier calving.

BIRTH AND FERTILITY

GL: Gestation Length EBV (days) is based on AI records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation lengths which generally relate to easier calving and increased growth after birth. BWT: Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of animals, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers. SS: Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is an indicator of male fertility in regards to semen quality and quantity. Higher (positive) EBVs indicate higher fertility. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny.

GROWTH

MILK: 200-Day Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal's milking ability. For sires, this EBV is indicative of their daughter’s milking ability as it affects the 200-day weight of their calves. 200: 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth to early ages. 400: 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for yearling weight. 600: 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age. MWT: Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age. Moderate or larger EBVs are generally more favourable.

CARCASE EMA: Eye Muscle Area EBV (cm2) estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. FAT: Rib Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic differences in fat depth at the rib in a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity. RBY%: Retail Beef Yield Percent EBV (%) represents total (boned out) meat yield as a percentage of a 300kg dressed carcase. A more positive EBV indicates higher percentage yield for the 300kg carcase size. IMF%: Intra-muscular Fat Percent EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intra-muscular fat at the 12/13th rib site in a 300kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.

Terminal Index

The BCCS Terminal index is aimed at a commercial herd using Charolais bulls over large framed, mixed breed cows to breed steers and heifers to finish at 18 months of age. All progeny are destined for slaughter and no replacement females are selected from within the herd. There is some emphasis on calving ease while finishing steers at around 680 kg live weight (375 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system supplemented with extra rations during the finishing phase. Use this index in a commercial herd to produce progeny for slaughter. The index has moderate emphasis on easier calving (ie getting a live calf with minimal human interference) while producing calves that will then grow quickly to market specifications at around 18 months of age. The index is focused on slaughter animals and does not account for maternal traits and is therefore not suited to breeding replacement females. If you are using smaller framed cows or heifers in your herd, then you should also put extra emphasis on a higher calving ease direct EBV when selecting a sire using this index.

Self Replacing Index

The BCCS Self Replacing index is aimed at a Charolais herd breeding steers to finish at 16 months of age. Replacement females are selected from within the herd. There is some emphasis on calving ease and maternal traits while finishing steers for slaughter at around 680 kg live weight (375 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system. This Self Replacing index is also suitable to using Charolais sires over mixed breed cows where replacement females are sourced from within the herd. There may be some hybrid vigour expressed in the progeny depending on the breed type of the cows used. Therefore you should consider placing extra emphasis on the Calving Ease EBVs (more positive) of the sire to allow for possible heavier birth weights of his calves due to hybrid vigour. Use this index in both commercial and pedigree herds where you are balancing the requirements of selecting replacement females while also producing animals for slaughter.

Charolais EBV ratios have been incorporated with the Estimated Breeding Values (EBV) to assist breeders in making their selection decisions when purchasing Charolais cattle. The Charolais EBV ratio for each trait shows that animal`s breeding value for that trait in relation to the current published breed average.

The average for each trait is 100, and the approximate range between the bottom 1% and the top 1% is between 70 and 130.

Government subsidy By Alistair Driver FARMING Minister Jim Paice has challenged British farmers to ‘set the industry on fire’by leaving the past behind and embracing the opportunities on offer in today’s marketplace. Speaking at the Oxford Farming Conference, Mr Paice laid out his vision for British farming based on seeking out new global markets, innovating using all available technologies and ultimately thriving without the support of direct subsidies. He also revealed Defra would be hosting an ‘innovation summit’ in London in March followed by a series of ‘practical’regional events. He dismissed the view of farming ‘as a quaint old industry’ and urged farmers to look to the future. “We can keep the cosy image of Buttercup in the field producing a few litres a day and the bucolic farmer leaning on his gate We can sentimentalise farmers as small players in a market dominated by supermarkets at home and multinational conglomerates abroad,”he said. “Or we can set this industry on fire and take the opportunities and face the reality they provide.”

He insisted his comments were not about advocating ‘big, corporate’ farms over ‘small, family’ businesses: “It is about attitude: whether to pine for the old days of government intervention and protection, or to face the challenges.” At the heart of his speech was the need for the industry to use ‘the best research, technology and knowledge transfer we can get’ to help boost production, while protecting resources and biodiversity.

Driving ambition Mr Paice identified the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) as the ‘professional body’ to drive the industry forward in this area and had asked AHDB chairman John Godfrey to address how this could be achieved. He stressed the industry needed to accept it was competing in a global food marketplace and to seek out export opportunities ‘where we are most competitive’. Shadow Defra Secretary Mary Creagh said food was ‘one of the defining political issues of this century’, but criticised the Government for failing to address all the issues surrounding it. Highlighting the role farming and food can play in stimulating economic recovery, she warned of increasing food poverty in the UK against a backdrop of rising food prices, exacerbated, she claimed, by commodity speculation. NFU president Peter Kendall said he was heartened by Mr Paice’s message.

If the handler is temporarily absent, arrangements should be made with another vendor, steward or member of Harrison & Hetherington staff to oversee the bull until the handler returns. Handling of Livestock at shows and sales: Harrison & Hetherington Limited recommend that an adult person should accompany any junior person during the showing/ sale of livestock in the ring and reserves the right to intervene at any point if, in the company’s opinion, the person showing the livestock is at risk in undertaking that activity. Passageways must be kept clear at all times during the auction sale. PLEASE DO NOT STAND IN THE SALE RING ENTRANCE AND EXIT PASSAGES. The auction ring man escapes and refuges must be kept clear at all times. All portable electrical equipment supplied and/or used by visitors and traders must be safe and fit for the purpose and should have a valid portable appliance test certificate.

10. If these conditions are unfulfilled, the Vendors or Auctioneers shall have the power to resell the Lots, retaining any surplus and charging any deficiency and expense to the defaulter. 11.
