Thank you Pat In 1996 Pat and a couple of friends called in at the newly opened Penrith branch of Carrs Billington and asked that we produce a specialist feed for her Alpacas. She told us she wanted a coarse mix with plenty of digestible fibre and a high level of quality minerals. This was the beginning of the CAMELID CARE COARSE MIX produced now at our ‘state of the art’ mill in Lancaster and sold throughout the length and breadth of the U.K. We at Carrs Billington owe Pat and Bill a great deal of gratitude and take this opportunity to wish them a long, happy and healthy retirement. A GUIDE TO ALPACA CARE & WELFARE A full version is available on the British Alpaca Society website www.bas-uk.com The Alpacas   

 

Alpacas are naturally herd animals and only really feel safe with their own kind; they must not be kept singly. Generally they are hardy healthy animals and, as with all livestock, they should be checked at least once a day, preferably twice. By spending time with your animals you will get to know them and it is easier to tell when they are ‘out of sorts’. The earlier problems are detected and help administered, the greater the chance of a speedy recovery. Alpacas usually give little indication that they are feeling unwell until they are very sick. Early indications may include loss of appetite, spending more time lying around and not keeping up with the herd. Other symptoms may include abnormal breathing and/or posture, lameness, discharge from the eyes or nose, and just generally looking depressed. If there is ever any doubt pertaining to the health and welfare of your animals, veterinary assistance should always be sought. Members of the British Camelid Veterinarian Society who are happy to advise on the treatment of alpacas can be found at their website: www.camelidvets.org

You 

 

 

Never be afraid to ask if you have any problems. You could learn something new each day about alpacas and they would still appear to have an air of mystery about them. If you experience any problems with newly purchased alpacas your first point of call should be with the person you brought them from. Don't be afraid to question your vet and provide him with all the information you can. For example, mention the weight of a fully fleeced animal before he approaches with the hypodermic. There are many conflicting views and opinions regarding all aspects of these creatures. If selling animals, make sure clients know and understand the minimum requirements involved in looking after alpacas. If possible, visit the new homes and ensure paddocks and field shelters are of an adequate size and that the animals will be safe and looked after.

Most importantly, enjoy your alpacas!

Accommodation   

Adequate grazing should be provided for the number of animals kept. The stocking ratio for alpacas is four to five per acre. This should be reduced if necessary during winter or when grass is low. Four-foot sheep fencing using stock netting is suitable for alpacas because they rarely jump and barbed wire should be removed. Post and rail and electric tape fencing can also be used, but avoid electric netting because animals can become entangled. It is advisable, if possible, to rotate grazing, allowing land to recover. Foot rot is not common in alpacas, but if conditions are extremely wet for prolonged periods, there should be an area of drier ground provided.

mating should be avoided. The selection of stud males is an important decision. The stud should be chosen to add improvements to the female such as better crimp or lower micron count because the male has a major influence on the quality of the offspring. Cria should be weaned at around six months of age. It is unwise for the safety of a newly born cria to have expectant mothers birthing in a field with deep puddles, ponds or streams. Hypothermia in cold or wet weather can be fatal to young and newborn cria. Cria should be vaccinated at four weeks and a booster given four to six weeks later. From then, they should fall into the regular schedule of the adult herd. Worming of cria is normally commenced at weaning. Late born cria can be given vitamin A, D, and E boosters in the autumn as a precaution against rickets.

Feeding    

  

Different groups of animals will have different nutritional requirements. Always ensure that there is enough grazing. If there is not, and especially in winter months, the animals should be offered hay or haylage. There must be a constant supply of fresh, clean drinking water. Heavily pregnant and lactating females and other animals also require a supplement concentrate feed during the winter months. When feeding concentrate, ensure that the food is suitable and offered in the correct quantities to meet your animals’ nutritional requirements. Feeding of sugar beet in the winter is a good source of energy. Don't use haynets because animals could get their heads caught and hang. Be aware that a number of plants are poisonous to alpacas and steps should be taken to ensure that they are removed from paddocks.

Transport 

    

 

Alpacas can be transported in a horsebox, livestock trailer, or any other approved vehicle for the transportation of livestock, providing there is enough room for the animal to stand. Animals should not be tied to the trailer in any way, because they will usually sit in transit. Flooring to the trailer should be capable of being disinfected - ideally rubber to provide the animals with some form of grip. Adult males and females should travel separately and can be divided by a solid partition. Travelling time must be monitored. Animals may only be in transit for nine hours out of each 24. Stops should be made to provide the animals with clean drinking water and food. This especially applies to females with young cria at foot and allows the cria time to suckle. Animals must also have the opportunity to stand and defecate. It is advisable in case of accident or emergency to carry with you sufficient head collars and lead ropes for each animal being transported. Seek veterinary advice when transporting heavily pregnant females. Judgements should take into account travelling time and distance.

F.A.Q’s 1. What sort of animal is an Alpaca ? Alpacas are of the Camelid family, evolved from the Vicuna, related to the Guanaco, Llama, Bactrian and Dromedary . They can all interbreed but such crosses are of no merit. 2. Do they spit ? Yes. They can, but seldom do. Alpacas have no inherent aggression; under normal circumstances they will neither bite nor kick. The only way they look after themselves is by keeping out of contact. Because they are inquisitive they will come near, but instinctively will keep beyond arms’ reach. Be mindful of this when handling alpacas. If they get frightened, hurt, feel trapped or confused they will spit - usually just foul air, maybe a mouthful of smelly grass - no more. It doesn’t hurt and no harm is done. IGNORE IT ! [If you let them know it bothers you they will do it again ….] If you are spat at it will be your fault ….. you will have done something wrong; modify your behaviour ! Be calm, quiet and remember to breathe normally when handling alpacas. Don’t look an alpaca in the eye - they perceive it to be a threat. Turn your back on them if you want them to go past you. 3. Are Alpacas intelligent ? Yes. They can and do learn and reason; they have very good memories - use that to your advantage. They don’t like going into a blind alley – give them time to assess the situation and to decide its OK (e.g. at loading). If confused or stressed they will hunker-down - stand back and give them time ……they will get up when they are ready. 4. How long is the gestation period ? It is said to be 11 and a half months though this is pretty flexible. (Say 12 months, and watch carefully from 10 months onwards.) I have seen normal births from 10 months to 14 months. They seem to have the ability ocassionally to delay implantation of an embryo at the very start. It is therefore very unwise to induce an alpaca delivery (in 30 years I have never known it to be necessary.) They can and will delay calving until there is good weather. They are highly unlikely to calve at night. Do not interfere at a birth unless you are absolutely sure it is necessary - mother invariably knows best! After the birth check the calf’s airway is fully open and that it is breathing properly - then dunk the umbilical cord up to the abdominal wall in a 10% solution of iodine. Then leave them alone; if mother is standing for the calf it will find her milk eventually.

11

5. Do they have twins ? Rarely, but they can give birth to twins and raise them. A female twin is fertile. We are told the male twin will be also, though to my knowledge nobody has put this to the test (someone some day should!) 6. Do males fight if kept together ? Occasionally. Give them plenty of space in both barn and field, and always provide more than enough trough space. Keep a fair space between entire males and open females. Keep young males in aged groups until they are three years old or gelded. Newly weaned calves can be put with geldings - but NEVER with entire males of any age. If they make a disturbance by screaming when skirmishing they can be distracted . Shout at them, bang something or walk amongst them (preferably with a dog on a lead or a cat in your arms) - they will stop…… 7. When should Alpacas be gelded ? Give males destined for gelding time to reach full height before gelding - usually towards the end of their second year, in the autumn (after the flies and before the frosts). Gelding is done under sedation with local anaesthetic . Leave the wounds open to drain and do NOT pen him up afterwards - he needs to walk. After a few hours on his own, when you can watch for any complications, put him out again with his pals. 8 . How often are Alpacas sheared ? Once a year in May or early June. The fleece grows faster the longer it gets. Fleeces of young calves benefit from a trim. This reduces the amount of debris accumulating in a fine fluffy fleece, thus keeping the first clip - the most valuable - in the best and cleanest condition. 9. Are Alpacas good lawn mowers ? Absolutely NOT ! They graze some areas very short and often ignore others. Alpacas urinate and defecate in ‘latrines’. For about two years they will not eat the long grass which grows over these - they need to be grazed by other stock or mown. N.B. ALPACAS ARE HERD ANIMALS and SHOULD NOT BE KEPT ALONE Pat Bentley

DISPERSAL SALE OF THE

SYKE HOUSE ALPACA HERD on behalf of MRS PAT BENTLEY

The Syke House Alpacas in the sale have been bred and fed for robust health, size and substance, and dense fleeces – all reflecting the fact that a big Alpaca will produce more of the all-important fibre! Over recent years I have selected Stud Males with increasingly dense fleeces on the principle that the more hair follicles genetically forced into a limited space – i.e. a skin cell – the finer each hair will inevitably become, thus ‘fixing’ fineness through density. (This is similar to the method used to produce the fine-fleeced Merino.) The result of this method is now evident although the fullest benefit has not yet been achieved. Thus, there is still satisfying work to be done by new owners, if they so wish. “Although I test finer fleeces, your fibre – because of its, evenness and good crimp – always has a wonderful soft, light handle with no trace of stiff fibres. I hope that the potential new owners at your sale, appreciate your years of applying a consistent breeding programme” Unsolicited quote from Ms Hilary Redden, BSc, M.Phil, PhD of The Fibre Lab I wholeheartedly recommend that Alpaca owners join The British Alpaca Society. This gives access to valuable information and record keeping via the Alpaca Registry updates on diseases and biosecurity, and government liaison. Also regular enjoyment and education through its magazines and invaluable contact with suppliers and other breeders – not to mention the opportunity to participate generally in the present operation and future development of Alpacas in Britain.

The seven young females offered here are all halter-trained and up-to-date with vaccinations and worming (details available at sale); and are only reluctantly sold because of the need to reduce herd numbers, which is also why they were not covered in 2013.
