When it comes to transforming everyday items into objets, whimsical home brand Alessi is the art gallery of kitchenwares – with Alberto Alessi its curator
Italian by design Many moons ago, I arrived at Alberto Alessi’s home on the edge of Lake Orta in Italy, late due to a flight delay, flustered, and recovering from a nasty bout of laryngitis. As the taxi arrived outside his home, Alessi emerged with a crisp, cool glass of white wine in his hand for me, made from grapes grown on his own land. I don’t really remember the exact words he uttered, but they had an immediate soothing effect, and the rest of the interview and shoot around his home was as relaxed as could be. In the afternoon, after we wrapped, the crew toasted with his homemade grappa. “Do you still make grappa?” I ask now, as we sit on a Zoom chat, he from his sunny office in Italy, me in my kitchen on a dreary London day. “Of course,” he says. “We continue to make chardonnay, pinot noir, late-harvest wine… and with the skins we make grappa.” Today, 11 years since we first met, Alessi is in his 52nd year at the family business, slightly more than half of the company’s entire existence. And he still possesses the same avuncular qualities that immediately put those around him at ease. He smiles often, gets a sparkle in his eye when he talks about design, and is thoughtful with his turn of phrase, words coloured by the rhythmical lilt of his Italian accent. So how was it for him during the last – most unusual – year or two? “It wasn’t a problem for me because I love being at home,” he says, contentedly. “I don’t like travelling, so during the pandemic I spent two-thirds of my time at the office – I was one of the few permitted to go to the factory – and the rest of the time I was at home.” Alessi took over a floor of his house, which he describes as his own “personal museum”, and it’s somehow comforting to know that he and his wife faced the same issues as everyone else, living and working on top of each other. “We negotiated clear rules,” he says with a smile. Now in its 101st year, the Alessi brand is an icon on the Italian homewares scene, best known for reimagining the design of everyday functional kitchenwares, often with a whimsical twist. Even those uninterested in design would recognise the octagonal Moka coffee maker, or the triangular birdwhistle kettle, 9093, or even the different characters depicted on corkscrews – surely only a brand like Alessi could make such a pedestrian item so cute? Today’s playful products are a far cry from the original output of the
he was more attentive to function and quality.” It wasn’t until Alessi’s father Carlo came on board – first as chief designer in 1935, then as general manager in 1953 – that the business began to collaborate with external designers and architects. “When I joined in 1970, what I did was increase the number and quality of designers,” says Alessi. “But the roots were already there.” While he is decidedly modest about his contribution to the business, it is undeniably Alberto who has honed the look and feel of the brand we know today. It has been his life’s work, collaborating with more than 300 star architects and design heavyweights. Philippe Starck, Marcel Wanders, Patricia Urquiola, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid and Piero Lissoni… the list is almost endless. And many of the creations have been hailed as revolutionary, displayed in museums around the world, from London’s V&A to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Indeed, Starck’s trailblazing citrus squeezer, the Juicy Salif, has become an icon in itself – a ‘transgression of the rules’ and proof that functional doesn’t have to mean ordinary. But the pinnacle piece for Alessi personally is the 9090 coffee maker, created by German designer Richard Sapper as a tribute to Alessi’s maternal grandfather, Alfonso Bialetti, who invented the
business. Founded in 1921 by Alessi’s grandfather Giovanni, the company initially operated as a metal workshop, creating small household items from brass, copper and nickel. It was never intended to create kitchenwares. “It was a much simpler time,” says Alessi. “We had a workshop of maybe just 30 or 40 people, and my grandfather didn’t care so much about design,
Moka Express. “Between the thousands of products I curated, this is maybe my number one,” says Alessi. The 9090 also marked the brand’s first official foray into kitchenwares – and it has never looked back. When I ask about his own design skills, Alessi is quick to correct me, preferring to call himself a mediator above all else. But he is, of course,

“What gives Alessi’s products their timelessness is an ability to snapshot a period in time”
Brand profile well-versed in design philosophy, and incredibly passionate about its principles: “It is a creative discipline with a very clear artistic and poetic matrix. It is a new form of art and poetry in the times we live in. That means all designers I meet need to be good poets before they are designers.” Despite the huge breadth of products created by the brand, there are some distinguishing consistencies: clean lines and architectural elements are commonplace, and many items are finished in polished stainless steel with matte-plastic accents in block colours. But to Alessi, what gives them their timelessness is an ability to snapshot a period in time. “We consider ourselves an industrial research lab,” he says. “Like a publisher publishes only the best books, we publish only the best designs, and to me those are the ones that capture the spirit of the times in which they were created.” Combine this approach with Alessi’s personal passion to continually explore new arenas and you have an output that feels forever fresh and innovative. Most recently, the business has teamed up with Seiko to make watches, and with Swiss producer Laufen to make bathroom accessories. Alessi also has his sights set on furniture-making, though he admits the competition is tough. Any prospective collaborators? “Yes – but I’ve been told not to tell you!” he says with a laugh. In such a competitive space as the design world, what advice would an experienced curator give to a young and ambitious creative? “When I started my job, I had maybe 20 to 25 designers to choose from in Italy – they were high quality but very few. Today, there could be 25,000. I would say finish school and find a job in a studio with a great Milanese designer; that is still a great way to start. Secondly, I would say he or she is choosing the best possible job. If they work hard, they have the potential to really recreate the world around them.” Cookware & Appliances, Third Floor; and harrods.com

Your best life Where to dine THE HARRODS SOCIAL The most recent addition to Jason Atherton’s Social Company roster is Harrods Social, on the store’s Lower Ground Floor. Much like at the acclaimed chef’s signature venues – which include Pollen Street Social and Berners Tavern – diners will feel spoilt by the excellence of the food and the precision of the service, yet untroubled by any unnecessary airs and graces. The menu includes innovative interpretations of British classics – such as beef tartare topped with a crisp sourdough crouton, and wild-mushroom ravioli – as well as Cumbrian cob chicken with truffle mash, and pumpkin risotto. Desserts such as the ultra-rich Valrhona chocolate tart are not to be missed; likewise the wine list, which features a selection of Atherton’s personal favourites – while diners are also welcome to peruse Harrods’ own Fine Wines & Spirits department (conveniently situated just across from the entrance to the restaurant) and select a wine from there to accompany their food. What to read BUILDING BEAUTIFUL: CLASSICAL HOUSES BY JOHN SIMPSON
By Clive Aslet, published by Rizzoli £45 In this monograph, Clive Aslet – former Country Life editor and author of some 20 books on architecture and history – takes us on a journey through the works of celebrated classical revival architect John Simpson. Inside are tours of the interiors, gardens and furniture of five houses that Simpson created for himself, family and friends over the course of more than 40 years. These include a 17th-century townhouse in London’s Belsize Park and an early18th-century townhouse on Great James Street in Bloomsbury (many of his projects have involved historic settings and listed buildings). And each is an

As Aslet writes, Building Beautiful is “not merely a visual feast, but an object lesson in how to live well”. The learning curve starts here. Carl Fabergé is considered one of the greatest goldsmiths of his time, with his work often cited as the epitome of Russian opulence. In 1882, he took over at the helm of his father’s jewellery business, transforming it through his extravagant creations, which featured vibrant precious stones and revived the lost art of enamelling – with probably the most celebrated of all, the series of Fabergé eggs commissioned by the Russian imperial family between 1885 and 1916. But Fabergé’s work was also prized far beyond Russia – not least in London, where, on a smaller scale, he sold almost exclusively to royalty, aristocrats, American heiresses and maharajas. The ‘Fabergé in London’ show at the Victoria and Albert Museum is the first major exhibition to explore his success in the British capital and how his company flourished under royal patronage. On display are some of the most famous works designed especially for British clientele, as well as several Fabergé eggs on loan from the Moscow Kremlin Museums. But it’s not exactly as we know it, according to Simon Barry, head of new developments at Harrods Estates. “Emptied of tourists, the capital’s parks have felt like open countryside, and many of the neighbourhood grocers, cafés and bars that managed to survive lockdown restrictions are now thriving, proving London’s network of urban villages makes it one of the most liveable cities in the world,” he says. And, business and finance aside, culture, schools, green space and connectivity to the rest of the world are cited among the biggest factors. Any fear of a mass exodus has abated. The Harrods Estates team has witnessed families returning to the city in search of pieds-à-terre in London’s golden postcodes, both as potential buyers and tenants. “The sales market has taken longer to reignite,” continues Barry, “but at the top end, from £7m upwards, interest never really went away. In 2020, we sold three properties at more than £30m – a first for our business in any 12-month period.” Confidence is back, and this is further supported by data from Knight Frank, which indicates that annual price growth in prime central London has started moving upwards for the first time since May 2016, with the number of buyers nearly 60 per cent higher in September 2021 than in September 2020. And homes worth £10m or more saw a double-digit rise in sales in September 2021. It was not supposed to be this way. When Covid hit, it looked like any Londoner who could leave town was doing so – mainly to Cornwall, Wiltshire, Somerset and Hampshire. Some analysts even predicted WFH meant the death of the city. So, what explains London’s resilience? Knight Frank’s research team attributes this to three factors. First, those who bought in the country after lockdown are now rediscovering what makes cities work – and matter. London is busy again, with offices, bars and restaurants re-establishing themselves as the places for people to meet. The
“The Harrods Estates team has witnessed families returning to the city in search of pieds-à-terre in London’s golden postcodes, both as potential buyers and tenants”
upshot is strong demand for properties from those who, not so long ago, took the rural route, with one-bedroom flats – the traditional toehold-in-thecapital option – particularly high on buyers’ wish lists. Second, many families who did buy in the country were lucky enough to retain their London properties, but now want even bigger ones because both parents now work from home two to three days a week. Desire for space has notably intensified as offices reopen and schools go back. Most highly prized now are traditional multistorey homes that offer greater physical separation, reversing a decade-long trend for concierge-maintained lateral living. The final factor is the easing of travel restrictions. Shaun Drummond, director of sales at Harrods Estates, says it started in summer 2021 with the return of Middle Eastern clients. Next came buyers from India, Malaysia, Turkey, North America, China and Hong Kong – and it was also apparent that residents of Hong Kong were looking to purchase family homes to facilitate permanent moves here (after Boris Johnson offered many a path to British citizenship), as opposed to buying one-bedroom apartments for children attending university or as investments. Similar observations have been made by Savills. Its latest report on prime markets predicts buyers will exploit a window of opportunity leading to projected price growth of eight per cent in 2022, which, together with the prospects for global wealth generation, gives confidence for prime central London’s medium- and long-term outlook. High-profile properties believed to have been snapped up by international buyers include a townhouse on Cambridge Terrace near Regent’s Park for £104m, and 2–8a Rutland Gate, overlooking Hyde Park, for £210m. New developments attracting overseas buyers include The Bryanston near Oxford Street (also overlooking Hyde Park); 1 Grosvenor Square (where a buyer is said to have paid £110m for the penthouse); Clarges near Hyde Park; and Hanover Bond in Mayfair, with branded residences by the Mandarin Oriental. With the added appeal of the weaker post-Brexit pound, and as more prime homes are sold, fewer are available for rent. And this is pushing up the cost of renting in the capital’s wealthiest districts at the fastest pace in a decade. “The lettings market has really taken off and prime central London has shown its true resilience,” says Sarah McIntyre, director of lettings at Harrods Estates. “Prime areas have been highly sought-after, with several properties achieving rental levels over their asking price. One apartment in Knightsbridge was secured for nearly 16 per cent over asking price – and the new rental-property price is now at a 57 per cent increase from the rent achieved pre-pandemic.” On average, rents in the priciest areas jumped by an annual 11.7 per cent in September 2021 and are now at pre-pandemic levels, according to analysts LonRes. “Tenants renewing, properties returning to short-term-let platforms and landlords having sold up are all contributing to a stock shortage,” says Marcus Dixon, head of research at LonRes. “Those looking to renew a rental agreement or searching for a new property to rent may be in for a shock.” The view from St Paul’s Cathedral out over the Thames to the Southbank Centre and beyond

Royal Albert Hall Kensington Gore SW7
GRAND TIER BOX £2,750,000 / LEASEHOLD 845 YEARS REMAINING
A very rare opportunity has arisen to purchase a 12-seat Grand Tier box in the world’s most prestigious concert hall. Offering exceptional views of the main stage, the box is located on the eastern side of the auditorium, close to the numerous bars and restaurants – so, as a member of the Corporation of the Hall of Arts and Sciences (which, as a seat holder, you will be), you can entertain your guests in style. The Royal Albert Hall is one of the UK’s most treasured and distinctive buildings. Since its official opening by Queen Victoria in 1871, many of the world’s leading artists have graced its stage and it is, of course, famous as the home of the annual Proms concerts, held for eight weeks each summer, an event it has hosted since 1941. Seat holders are entitled to their seats for all ‘ordinary lettings’, which amount to approximately two-thirds of the performances in the Royal Albert Hall in any 12-month period. Seat holders also pay a ‘seat rate’, which is an annual contribution towards the upkeep of the hall, with the yearly contribution set at the AGM.
