Woody Sez Long before Bob Dylan and the folk-inspired protest singers of the 1960s, there was Woody Guthrie, a troubadour of backwoods America who believed in “singing for the plain folks and getting tough with the rich folks”. Part music, part spoken word, Woody Sez weaves together Guthrie’s songs with excerpts from articles he wrote for the leftist newspaper The People’s World to create a portrait of a true American hero, a man who would “always be there whenever working folks fight for their rights”.
harmonica, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, dobro and beautiful folk harmonies, transporting the audience through the fascinating, and sometimes tragic, life of this true American hero. Woody Guthrie gave voice to the struggles of the common man and Woody Sez does the same for the spirit of the man himself.
“Knocks big West End biopics… into a heap of dust” The Guardian
Following a successful London West End run, charismatic Broadway and recording artist David Lutken, who plays the title role, is joined by three multi-talented folk musicians to bring Guthrie’s music to life with twin fiddles, guitars, bass, 4 SHOWS FOR £44 (SEE PAGE 4)

Al Murray
Presented by the Grand Opera of Belarus
Join the Fosters Comedy Award-winner and star of loads of stuff on telly as he brings his latest stand-up show Posturing Delivery to Harrogate Theatre.
Following its barnstorming performance of Time Gentlemen Please, the UK’s number one folk and hip-hop dance extravaganza – The Demon Barbers – makes a welcome return with a newly polished version of its critically acclaimed spectacular.
Britain may be staring into the bottom of an empty pint glass, but don’t lose hope – Al Murray The Pub Landlord is back to fill it up again, with a brand new show of epic proportions.
Treat your loved one this Valentine’s Day to one of the most romantic operas ever written in the sumptuous surroundings of the Royal Hall. When Mimi and Rodolfo meet, they fall hopelessly for each other – but the course of true love rarely runs smoothly and Puccini’s passionate and evocative music carries them from heartstopping romance to heart-breaking loss as their story tumbles towards its conclusion. One of the world’s favourite operas, La Bohème has inspired many a love story and perfectly captures the passion and the pain of being young, poor, and in love. Presented by the critically acclaimed Grand Opera of Belarus – one of three theatres to receive the Bolshoi status – along with a live orchestra, La Bohème is the perfect way to spend Valentine’s Day.
In his most outrageous show yet Russell poses two important questions: What if I’m one of the guys who never has a baby? Why is this not a ‘male subject’? He then plans to give birth, live on stage, then raise it – in front of you. Come along!
“A smart, probing brain lurks below the vertiginous quiff ” ★★★★ The Evening Standard
“Invigorating comedy… Kane is too busy and too bright to slow down and be boring” ★★★★ The Times
“More thought and intelligence behind his comedy than most people could ever get near.” The Mirror
It’s back to The Fighting Cocks pub ‘after hours’ where a group of traditional folk dancers lock horns with some young hip-hop dancers. The skill, speed and athleticism of the dancers on both sides soon wins the others over as the old and new are brought together in an exciting and dynamic dance-off. Sword dances are performed with snooker-cues, pub bouncers dance the Morris and B-boys flirt with clog girls. Given how well last year’s show went down, early booking is highly recommended.
“A consistently lively entertaining music and dance performance virtually guaranteed to raise weary spirits and send an audience home smiling”
Following a phenomenally successful 2012 Autumn tour, Britain’s most irrepressible innkeeper will be serving up his premier brew of ale-inspired acumen and bar-room buffoonery as part of his hilarious new show The Only Way Is Epic. This monumental new live stand-up show from the multi-award-winning comedian, directly follows the nationwide success of the Guv’s twice extended Barrel of Fun tour, and is sure to sell-out fast. It’s not just a tour… it’s a national pep talk. Get your orders in now.

Sugar Daddies Following the hugely successful productions of The Hound of the Baskervilles and Private Lives we once again team up with the excellent Oldham Coliseum Theatre to present Alan Ayckbourn’s Sugar Daddies.
ROYAL HALL
Premiered in 2003, Ayckbourn’s 63rd play marked the hugely popular playwright’s transformation from social observer to impassioned moralist, still retaining all his classic wit and humour. This production is directed by Robin Herford, who is best known as the director of Stephen Mallatratt’s unanimously acclaimed stage adaptation of The Woman In Black, which is still running in the West End after 21 years.
Robert Cray is one of the most popular artists in blues and soul music. Cray helped to shape the blues on the national scene in the 1980s with his breakthrough album Strong Persuader in 1986. His soulful and creative guitar work has been a dominant force in blues and his musical influence is clear to hear in many contemporary recordings.

Richard Herring Celebrated comedian Richard Herring returns with his brand new show about men and their appendage. It’s an object of shame and pride; it inspires laughter and fear; it’s a symbol of power, yet it’s incredibly fragile; it can be a pound of flesh or an ounce of winkles, it can be used to express both love and hate; it creates life and it can condemn us to death. How can one tiny flap of sponge and sinew be all these things? Richard Herring intends to find out in this tenth anniversary update of his critically acclaimed show.
“An impassioned and thoughtful disquisition on masculinity, cultural identity and sexual anthropology” The Observer
“A rallying call for realism & honesty about the male member - and a great platform for Herring's brand of pedant humour” The Guardian

Welcome to the Bayou, a part of the city feared and loathed wherein lies the infamous Bayou Mansions; a sprawling stinking tenement block, where curtain-twitchers and peeping-toms live side by side, and the wolf is always at the door.
Written by Robert Farquhar Presented by Reform Theatre Company in association with Harrogate Theatre From the company who brought you My Favourite Summer, Seconds Out and Like a Virgin comes God’s Official.
Love, passion and friendship get the red card in this very funny look at what could have been – on and off the pitch – for all life’s dreamers.
When Agnes Eaves and her daughter arrive late one night, does it signal hope in this hopeless place, or has the real horror only just begun?
Cliff and Degsy are devastated that a dodgy refereeing decision has condemned their beloved team to relegation. Seeking retribution and fair play, the lads abduct the referee. The ransom? Admitting his mistake and playing the game again.
“You know a true comic playwright has arrived when the audience start laughing before the actors tell the jokes”
1927 invites you to a dystopian metropolis of inner city paranoia. Seamlessly synchronizing live music, performance and storytelling with stunning films and animation, this is a wickedly twisted new tale from the multiple awardwinning company.
The Guardian
As their half-baked plan goes increasingly awry, they soon realise that the referee they’ve decided to kidnap is even more annoying off the pitch than on it. Full time beckons – will the clueless duo get the victory they’d hoped for, or have they scored a spectacular own goal?

Having previously delighted audiences with hit shows Is That A Bolt in Your Neck? and I’m An Aristocrat, Get Me Out Of Here, Gonzo Moose are back with a Dickensian comedy adventure to entertain the whole family.
Young Charles Dickens is a rookie reporter on The Morning Chronicle. Investigating the foggy slums of Ye Olde London Towne, he accidentally stumbles on a story that could make his reputation. Follow our hero on the adventure of a lifetime. Expect a world of pockmarked pickpockets, cobwebby convicts, dark secrets and convoluted plots, and lots and lots of fog. This inventive and gripping comedy features just three actors playing more than 20 roles in 80 minutes of fast-paced fun and thrilling action. Brimming with unfeasibly quick costume changes, stupidly surreal characters and wonderfully daft jokes, What The Dickens? is the most absurd contribution to the Dickens bicentenary you could hope to see.

Me & Me Dad Written by Nick Lane Directed by Keith Hukin Presented by Reform Theatre Company in association with Harrogate Theatre Dave Lees’ dad Pete is the sort of bloke who needs a recipe for toast. The kind of guy who thinks that tortilla fought King Kong and that tiramisu played midfield for Brazil in the 1974 World Cup. In a word, he’s terrible. Good at Subbuteo, hopeless with spaghetti. So when Jean, Dave’s mum, dies, Dave does the decent thing – he puts his failing acting career on hold and moves back home to teach his dad how to cook. Fighting memories (and occasionally each other) and risking the sanity of relatives and neighbours, not to mention Dave’s girlfriend, the pair set to the task with gusto – well, Dave does – in an attempt to save Pete from a diet of pickled beetroot and jam sandwiches. Can their relationship survive? Or is this one kitchen nightmare even Gordon Ramsay couldn’t fix? A bittersweet comedy from Nick Lane, the writer of My Favourite Summer and Housebound.

Their latest show sees Georgeois Bourgeois and Maurice Maurice tackle some of the most pressing issues of our time – and twist them into something altogether more bizarre. Covering phone-hacking scandals, ecological disasters and the sexual allure of a tax return, Bourgeois & Maurice set out to solve every issue of the 21st century using only a piano, a few plasticky instruments and a very warped sense of right and wrong. It’ll be alright if you like laughing.
A searing, funny and thought-provoking new play from Ben Tagoe (Cold Turkey at Nana’s – Oran Mor/Perth Theatre, Bittersweet Sunshine – Red Ladder and BBC Writers Academy), The Thing about Psychopaths asks important questions about power and empathy in modern Britain.
As the horror threatens to engulf him, he discovers another world beneath the mud and death. Setting off on an epic journey of salvation, the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur as he questions what’s real, what’s not and whether it even matters.
“The play’s sharpness, competence and passion for its theme are memorable and full of promise.” The Scotsman on Ben Tagoe’s Cold Turkey at Nana’s

The Agony and The Ecstasy of Steve Jobs Written by Mike Daisey Presented by Gilded Balloon Mike Daisey’s funny and poignant new play addresses the life of Steve Jobs by focusing on two different stories, one on the creation and changing face of Apple and one on the writer's own trip to China where the products are made, and the sweatshops he found them being created in. This bold and passionate monologue shines a light on our love affair with our devices and the human cost of creating them. It will make you question what you thought you knew about one of the world’s most worshipped brands. As a self-confessed ‘worshipper at the church of Apple’, Daisey tugs at heart strings, and demonstrates how one man’s story might not be able to topple an empire, but it can certainly give it a righteous shove.

The Counterfeit Stones Harrogate favourites The Counterfeit Stones celebrate their 22nd anniversary and Sir Mick’s 70th birthday with a brand new “Sham Rock” experience for 2013. Their skillfully mixed cocktail of classic hits, retro costume and humour continues to intoxicate young and old alike – 100% proof that a good shot always hits the target. This hooky masterpiece, hilariously “mockumenting” the history of the Rolling Stones from 1962, will take you back if you were there; or make you wish you were, if you weren’t.
On 1 February Jack Munroe walked out on his job, his wife and his teenage children. Beside his bed was a copy of Hot Sex Tips and Which Caravan magazine. In a world just on the edge, are we all losing the plot?

Everybody’s favourite comedy nice boys, Ray and Ed, return to Harrogate, with another show full of fun, idiocy and handsomeness live on a stage.
Swansea City Opera make a welcome return to Harrogate with a production of Donizetti’s popular and uproarious comic opera, Don Pasquale. Beautifully staged in English with elegant 1840’s costumes, and performed by some of the finest singers and orchestral players in the country, Don Pasquale contains some of Donizetti’s loveliest music and makes for an enchanting and hilarious evening’s entertainment. When Don Pasquale is unable to convince his nephew to marry for money rather than love he hatches a plan to find himself a bride, produce an heir and thereby win himself a large inheritance. A series of highly comic encounters ensue, as the greed of the increasingly battered and bewildered Don Pasquale is exposed. Re-live the heady days of the pop-tastic seventies as he recalls all-conquering Top of the Pops appearances, endless world tours, epoch defining anthems, thespian triumphs, and glue-ing some mirrors onto a top hat to change the face of fashion forever. Coaxing the anecdotal nuggets from the great man will be his close friend, confidante and personal dresser Mark Radcliffe. In End to End they tell the heartwarming story of their journey, the trials and tribulations faced along the way and the unexpected acts of kindness they encountered. This is a story about friendship, adventure and momentary connections made on the road. They wonder whether the seeds planted will grow into something more meaningful. Midge Ure
Written by Molly Naylor Presented by Show And Tell
Midge Ure has shape shifted his way through the UK music scene for 35 years.
Molly Naylor presents a warm, beguiling and poignant storytelling show with music from folky duo The Middle Ones.
From prototype boy band with Slik, through electronic pioneer with Visage, rock guitarist with Thin Lizzy, chart topper with Ultravox and his solo career, to charity fundraiser with Band Aid…
Molly offers the tale of three generations of one family and an impending wedding. Together they explore the meanings of love and fear, and the relationship between the two.
Midge has adapted to the ebb and flow of his career performing with large bands, trios, and his solo acoustic shows with which he sticks to his mantra that a good song can be stripped down to its basics and still stand close inspection.
Molly wrote the acclaimed live show (adapted for BBC Radio 4) Whenever I Get Blown Up I Think Of You.
“Brave, funny, tough and beautiful writing”
Midge’s shows in 2013 will reflect, as ever, his full career, including solo songs such as If I Was, and Ultravox songs from Vienna up to new songs from the brand new Ultravox CD Brilliant.

Nunkie, the company behind the acclaimed M R James Trilogy, bring H G Wells’s science fiction classic to life, in another thrilling one-man show.
