John Peel’s Shed Presented by Show + Tell Written & performed by John Osborne Direct from a five-star sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival comes John Osborne’s debut – John Peel’s Shed. In 2002, John Osborne won a competition on John Peel’s Radio One show. His prize was a box of records that took eight years to listen to. Inspired by Osborne’s acclaimed book Radio Head (BBC Radio 4’s Book Of The Week) and featuring records previously owned by the great Peel himself, John Peel’s Shed is an ode to radio, those records and anyone who’s ever sought solace in wireless. The unmissable hit of last year’s Edinburgh Festival, the script for John Peel’s Shed was edited by Joe Dunthorne, writer of the novel Submarine.
“Beautifully-written, funny and poignant... Just as John Peel’s records changed his life this lovely, simple, beautifully executed show has enriched ours” The Guardian

Presented by Awkward Cough Theatre Company
Boasting a reputation for hard-edged social commentary, not to mention a big beard, Aussie funnyman Steve Hughes stops off at Harrogate Theatre as part of his debut comedy tour.
Following a hugely successful run at last year’s Edinburgh Festival Awkward Cough Theatre Company return to the Harrogate Theatre Studio with Criminy.
Direct from supporting Reginald D Hunter on his national tour and performing sell-out shows at the Sydney and Melbourne Comedy Festivals, Steve’s built up a loyal UK following thanks to storming sets on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow (BBC), Stand Up For The Week (Channel 4) and One Night Stand (Dave).
The plan was simple: Find bank. Rob bank. Flee bank.
Inimitable, intelligent and straight-talking Steve Hughes is one of the most original and thoughtprovoking performers to grace the UK circuit.
“Outstanding. Hughes is gold” Metro
“Hard-edged social commentary at its best” The Times
Witness the slapstick escapades of three down-ontheir-luck stooges as they squabble, fumble and generally make a giant pig’s ear of what should be a straightforward bank robbery. A silent comedy, reinvented with modern flavour, don’t miss this exciting young company in this innovative, witty and wonderfully silly piece of classic storytelling.

Presented by Kula Productions
“Does anybody love anybody anyway?” asked insane Welsh poet and philosopher Howard Jones in 1983. Finally someone dares to answer. Having sorted out religion (Christ on a Bike, 2011) and politics (Hitler Moustache, 2010), the star of the award-winning podcast As It Occurs To Me and Radio 4’s Richard Herring’s Objective seeks to define and destroy love – before it destroys him. Again. Does Richard’s dry-cleaner genuinely love him? How could a romantic gesture involving Ferrero Rocher get dangerously out of control?
“Stimulating and exhilarating… utterly hilarious” Chortle
Winners of the St. Martins in the Fields Chamber Music Competition and the Martin Musical/ Philarmonia Scholarship Fund 2010 the Piatti Quartet are fast emerging as one of the UK’s leading young string quartets.

Music legend Nick Lowe graces the Harrogate Theatre stage for one night only. Nick began his musical career as a member of Brinsley Schwarz, during which time he wrote ‘(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding’, a hit for Elvis Costello in 1979, and ‘Cruel to Be Kind’, a solo hit the same year. After leaving Brinsley Schwarz in 1975, he began playing in Rockpile and in the following year released ‘So It Goes’. Dr. Feelgood’s hit single ‘Milk and Alcohol’ was co-penned by Nick, which along with ‘I Love The Sound of Breaking Glass’, reached the Top 10 in 1978. He also produced The Damned’s first single, ‘New Rose’, considered the first English punk single. Nick played at Glastonbury 2011, performing a short solo set of Brinsley Schwarz tracks on The Spirit Of 71 stage, where they played back in 1971, before heading to the Acoustic Stage for a full band show.

Your Days Are Numbered
Thirsty
Drinking is good for you. Being single is bad for you. After sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Festival and Cheltenham Science Festival, the comedy that asks “what are the odds?” comes to Harrogate Theatre.
Following on from In a Thousand Pieces and Others, Fringe First Award-winners and Harrogate Theatre favourites The Paper Birds present their brand new show – Thirsty.
Cows kill 20 Americans every year. But you can halve your chance of dying of a heart attack by drinking 8 bottles of wine a week.
Exploring our nation’s apparent love affair with alcohol, Thirsty weaves together hundreds of real life memories and booze-based confessions. Through live music, verbatim text and stunning physical theatre, The Paper Birds tell the story of one night, leaping from nightclubs to working men’s clubs, from the happy hours to the early hours.
Death’s a funny thing, as stand-up mathematician, Matt Parker, and writer/comedian, Timandra Harkness will prove in this thought-provoking evening of scintillating comedy and intellect – with the help of a mystery guest, a game show and the Grim Reaper. Will housework double your risk of dying? Is radiation more dangerous than bees? Find out here. You have a 0.000043% chance of dying during this show – but at least you’ll die laughing. And in the hour it takes to watch this performance, your life expectancy will go up by 12 minutes – assuming you don’t die, that is.

Command Performance – DVD Record
London’s gorgeous award-winning cabaret stars Bourgeois & Maurice bring their dazzling musicality and dark glamour to Harrogate Theatre.
The world’s most famous colliery band with an international reputation for excellence come to Harrogate as part of their national tour.
Part cabaret, part theatre, part catwalk freak show Bourgeois & Maurice merge bitingly acerbic original songs with slanderous gossip and a truly staggering collection of outfits. With irreverent and glorious offensive lyrics, the duo’s music explores the mundane absurdity of modern life and wraps it up neatly in a catchy pop hook.
Originally formed in 1917 as a leisure activity for workmen at the colliery, the band shot to international stardom after featuring on the BAFTA-nominated soundtrack to the hit 1995 film Brassed Off! starring Ewan McGregor and the late Pete Postlethwaite.
Showbiz legend and raconteur, Count Arthur Strong returns to record the DVD for Command Performance. So get your Maltesers out, roll your trouser legs up and sit back and enjoy this potentially wonderful show. Pausing only to glance up from your programme to ask when the interval is. I can guarantee you, you’ll have never seen anything like it. Early booking is recommended as Count Arthur Strong continues to enjoy success from his BBC Radio 4 comedy series and his run at the Edinburgh Festival.

Henry Blofeld
Presented by Analogue
Join Henry ‘Blowers’ Blofeld – one of Britain’s most celebrated cricket commentators and familiar voice of Test Match Special – for an evening devoted to a quintessentially English pastime.
Following the critically acclaimed Beachy Head (Mar 2011) and Lecture Notes on a Death Scene (May 2011) Analogue make a welcome return to Harrogate Theatre with their award-winning 2401 Objects. In 1953 Henry Molaison emerges from experimental brain surgery without any recollection of the last two years of his life, or the ability to form new memories. In 2009 Molaison’s brain is dissected live on the internet to a global audience of 400,000 people, cut into carefully preserved slices; manuscripts of tissue like the pages of a book. Inspired by the world’s most important neuroscientific case-study, 2401 Objects tells the remarkable story of a man who could no longer remember, but who has proven impossible to forget.

A must for cricket fans young and old alike – and anyone who enjoys a cracking yarn – An Evening with Blowers is a thoroughly British affair in which Henry Blofeld trawls through his extraordinary life and career. No one’s views are more prickly and earthshatteringly funny. The pompous, the politically correct and the prancing popinjays on every platform of life, are kicked unceremoniously into touch in this highly entertaining evening from a master raconteur. For all of those who share his passion for the game, he will, of course, also have the answers for those who want to know what all the fuss is about.
“Raconteur, bon viveur, and master of quick wit and stunning repartee, Henry Blofeld’s live performance reveals him as possibly the greatest living Englishman”

Northern Sinfonia Dancing in the Mario Venzago: Conductor Streets Jack Liebeck: Violin Mendelssohn Hebrides Overture ‘Fingal’s Cave’ Bruch Violin Concerto no.1 in G minor Beethoven Symphony no. 3 in E flat ‘Eroica’ Two hundred years before Live Aid, Ludwig van Beethoven organised a concert that he hoped would help lift the burden of the oppressed. For this pivotal occasion, he wrote a symphony that would encapsulate ideals of liberty in music of intense endurance and fortitude. In its volume, length and emotional power, Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ left critics and audiences dumbfounded. Two centuries on, you can still hear why. Northern Sinfonia has built a distinctive reputation as a fresh thinking, versatile orchestra, performing repertoire spanning three centuries and regularly commissioned new work.

Presented by TongueTied Theatre Funny, tender and emotionally charged Free Birds is a brand new drama about a modern day relationship. Do Lizzie and Ben just meet up to inject a little romance and spice into their otherwise exhausting and problematic lives? Founded in 2003 in Yeadon, Leeds, Icabod Productions was established with the long term objective of producing high quality innovative, exciting and compelling theatre, which, wherever possible, draws inspiration from the history, characters, issues and folklore of the Yorkshire region. Please note this production contains some strong language and mild sexual references.

A man. An ordinary man. Working in an ordinary job. Living in an ordinary house. If you passed him on the street, which you have, you wouldn’t see him. You wouldn’t even realize he was there. An ordinary man… with an extraordinary secret. Set in a world of misguided passions, momentary lifetimes and crumbs of desire, The Fantasist’s Waltz is a haunting modern fairy tale of an isolated man who disappears into his imagination for solace, a magnificent dream world in which he is the centre of wonder and the object of desire. Through the veins of Tongue Tied Theatre’s tale pulses a live original score and inventive physical storytelling bringing to life the story of a man’s fight for survival in a world that has seemingly forgotten him.

Spiers and Boden have made the genre of spontaneous, punky English folk very much their own stomping ground. Loud, proud, and with just a few acoustic instruments, they create a multitude of textures upon which they present traditional stories and dance music which have taken them on to the main stages of major festivals. In addition to their BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, the duo won a critic’s choice nomination at the BBC World Music Awards and are also founding members of the wildly ambitious eleven piece big-band folk phenomenon, Bellowhead (BBC Folk Awards for Best Live Act in 2005, 2007, 2008, Observer Top 20 albums of 2007).

The Hallé
Following 2010’s 150 date sell-out tour of the UK and Ireland and best selling DVD This Is The Show, Irish funnyman Dara O’Briain hits the road again with a brand new show for 2012.
Presented by Unfolding Theatre in association with Northern Stage
Presented by Mick Perrin for Just for Laughs Live
Sir Mark Elder: Conductor Sofya Gulyak: Piano
What is it like to be best in the world?
Dara is one of the most recognisable faces of British TV, hosting Mock The Week, The Apprentice – Your Fired, Stargazing Live and starring in 3 Men in a Boat.
When darts fan, Annie Rigby watched Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor win his 15th World Darts Championship this is what she began to wonder.
The award-winning comedian, actor/screenwriter (Grandma’s House) and presenter (Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Popworld) returns with his brand new stand-up show.
Borodin Borodin Tchaikovsky Tchaikovsky
Intensely vulnerable and painfully honest, Amstell attempts again to heal himself in public. If it’s anything like his last critically acclaimed stand up show Do Nothing in 2009 expect less of his cheeky, pop star-baiting TV persona and more of the comic neurosis that led The Guardian to describe him as “Heidegger meets Woody Allen”.
Sir Mark Elder and The Hallé return to the Royal Hall to present a White Night of great Russian music. Borodin’s overture for his nationalistic opera Prince Igor begins in sombre fashion before fanfares herald a succession of unforgettable (and very Russian) themes. The same composer’s Second Symphony is equally striking and concludes with an irrepressible finale.
Catch one of the most charismatic, intelligent, fast-talking and down right funny live performers working in the British Isles today.

Harrogate Youth Theatre EXHIBITION
Terry Cryer at Harrogate Theatre Presented by RedHouse Originals in association with Harrogate Theatre RedHouse Originals Gallery have teamed up with Harrogate Theatre to present an exclusive exhibition of Terry Cryer’s photography, featuring the unveiling of rare and unseen images from the archives. Terry Cryer has a way with a camera like no-one else; timeless, intuitive, effortless, iconic and alluring. His images and unique printing techniques tell stories that words could never define. Born in Leeds in 1934, Cryer first made his name photographing the legends of the Jazz & Blues explosion in England in the mid to late 1950s. During the 1960s and 70s Cryer photographed stars of the stage and silver screen. The photographs are on display in both the Stalls and Circle Bars, with each drawing on a different aspect of his astonishing career.
The Stalls Bar features a Jazz & Blues theme focusing on selected images from the mid to late 1950s. The Circle Bar will feature Cryer’s Stars of the Stage and Silver Screen. Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Steve McQueen and Peter Sellers are among the names on show with many of the shots taken in the early 1960s during Cryer’s time as in-house photographer at the London Palladium. The photographs are also available to purchase. Each image is published in a limited edition of 25 and the prints are signed, numbered and titled by the photographer. For further information please contact RedHouse Originals on 01423 884 400, visit the gallery at Cheltenham Mount, HG1 1DW or online at www.redhouseoriginals.com
