Welcome... I have been Chief Executive at Harrogate Theatre for seven years now and this is one of the strongest season brochures we have ever produced. From May to August there is plenty to keep all ages entertained across all three of Harrogate’s wonderful venues. In addition we have started work on some major projects for Autumn including three World Premiere plays, our fourth annualComedy Festival and a hugely exciting celebration of Opera. Particular personal highlights this season include: – The return of Two’s Company – an intriguing mini Festival of work for only handfuls of audience members at a time. This really is a unique and fun way to explore theatrical performance. It might sound intimidating or scary but trust me its not – why not give something different a go. – Our Youth Theatre will take on a classic swashbuckling adventure for their Summer Production. Our young performers will take on classic roles we all know andlove from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. – A big welcome to ClassicFest – a brand new Festival in Harrogate this August. It features a sensational line-up across just one week. Lets hope it becomes a regular fixture in the Harrogate calendar.

Royal Hall Collaborating with companies and performers is something I value very highly and this season our associate company scheme continues. We are also maintaining our close relationships with North Country Theatre and English Touring Opera as well as embarking on a new project with the world renowned Northern Broadsides. This past year has also been particularly successful for our Box Office. Twelve months ago we merged the Box Office services for Harrogate to ensure that you can book your tickets easily for multiple performances and venues. Over the coming year we will be adding further events from across the District to our roster – so keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages for updates and let us know what you think. I hope you enjoy browsing through this brochure and seeing what we have to offer – from poetry and puppetry, theatre classics to the cutting edge, magic to music, explorers to famous faces there really is something for alltastes. I look forward to welcoming you, your family and friends to Harrogate Theatres soon. With best wishes David Bown Chief Executive

The London Community Gospel Choir make their Royal Hall debut with an unforgettable evening of gospel greats celebrating their 30th anniversary.
Written by Polis Loizou Following a sell-out run at Harrogate Theatre last year Thunder Road return with Hyde. Edinburgh, the late 19th Century. A world of shadows and invisible women. Following a lengthy absence, Dr Henry Jekyll has returned to his hometown a respectable physician. At first, his good friend and lawyer Mr Utterson is elated by the news, but can’t help suspecting that something is amiss in the Jekyll house. Combining the Victorian atmosphere of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic thriller with a modern energy, Hyde tells the story of two men united by their past but separated by change.

The Hallé Sir Mark Elder: Conductor Sofya Gulyak: Piano Borodin Borodin Tchaikovsky Tchaikovsky
Overture Prince Igor Symphony No.2 Concert Fantasy Op. 56 1812 Overture
Sir Mark Elder and The Hallé return to the Royal Hall to present a White Night of great Russian music. Borodin’s overture for his nationalistic opera Prince Igor begins in sombre fashion before fanfares herald a succession of unforgettable (and very Russian) themes. The same composer’s Second Symphony is equally striking and concludes with an irrepressible finale. In 2009 Sofya Gulyak became the first female winner of the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition. Here she joins The Hallé in a performance of her compatriot’s enthralling Concert Fantasy, a work now enjoying a longoverdue revival. The splendid 1812 Overture rounds off the evening in the most stirring fashion.

The Battle for Goose Green
Miles Jupp
A talk by Peter Kennedy (C Company 2 PARA at Goose Green)
After pulling a few strings and telling some little lies, an unprepared and unqualified Miles Jupp headed to India with the English press to embark on a month long, sun-soaked disaster (and some minor triumphs).
29 May 2012 is the 30th anniversary of the Battle of Goose Green; the first decisive land battle of the Falklands War of 1982. Lt Col H Jones, the commanding officer of 2 PARA, was killed in action during the battle and earned the Victoria Cross. Goose Green was the first major battle the British Army had fought in a generation, and came very close to defeat. Follow the battle from the perspective of a Yorkshireborn paratrooper who fought in it. Peter Kennedy led the final attack at Goose Green to capture the last hill and the enemy flag on its summit. He was second in command of C Company 2 PARA, and took over the company in the closing stage of the battle when his company commander was wounded. Understand how this close-run battle was fought, and experience the buzz and occasional terror of combat. Please note: This lecture will contain bangs & smoke. All money raised will go to: Help for Heroes, The Royal British Legion, The Parachute Regiment Charity. tickets: All £15

Dancing in the Streets
Written by Harold Pinter Presented by European Arts Company
Experience the emotion and electricity of Motown with Dancing in the Streets which comes to the Royal Hall as part of an extensive national tour.
A very entertaining double-bill of Harold Pinter’s classic short, black comedies. In The Dumb Waiter, two hit-men are waiting in a basement room to do a job. Strange messages keep appearing via a serving hatch. Who are they from? Why are they waiting? And who is their next victim? Comedy and menace collide seamlessly in this classic Pinter one-act play from 1960. In The Lover, Richard and Sarah have been married for 10 years. Every morning he commutes into the City to pore over balance sheets and graphs while she shows her lover the hollyhocks. Everything is not quite as it seems as fantasy and reality converge to dizzying effect.

Martin Taylor & Alison Burns When Grammy award-winning guitarist Martin Taylor chose to record a special album with a vocalist to feature gems from the Great American Songbook, he chose the UK’s fastest rising jazz singer Alison Burns. The combination worked so well that despite busy workloads in their own right the pair now record and perform together whenever possible as they simply love working together. Martin Taylor has collaborated with great singers including Peggy Lee, Martin Carthy, Jamie Cullum, Dionne Warwick and Bryn Terfel. Together the duo have a natural rapport that comes over best when sharing a stage – each bouncing off each other and blending their music to dynamic effect.

Alex Horne
Dave Gorman
Piaf – The Songs
Star and co-creator of BBC4’s comedy quiz show We Need Answers, award-winning comedian Alex Horne returns following a sell-out show at the 2011 Harrogate Comedy Festival. Alex has established a reputation among critics, comics and audiences as a thoughtful and original stand-up, writer and solo performer.
Following a sell-out autumn 2011 tour; the man behind Are You Dave Gorman? and Googlewhack Adventure has extended his Power Point Presentation tour and brings it to Harrogate this June.
Eve Loiseau sings the songs of Edith Piaf with Fiona Barrow (violin) & Edward Jay (accordion)
Seven Years In The Bathroom is the ultimate stat-based fun-packed thought-provoking experimental-and-sometimes-stupid hour-long comedy show in which Alex aims to recreate your entire life in one hour. That’s right, he’ll do everything you’ll ever do but in sixty minutes. So in an average lifetime you’ll spend two years shopping, two weeks kissing and eighteen months looking for lost things. You’ll also spend quite a while eating, queuing, crying and googling yourself. Alex is going to squeeze all those things into one show and it’ll be tremendous. And very funny. So come and laugh at your life.
Always one of comedy’s most innovative thinkers this genre-stretching performer is back… and for this brand new show he’s formed a double act… with a projector screen. And they’d like to show you their powerpoint presentation. Cast your powerpoint prejudice* aside, it’s not just for business meetings. *Some bullet points will be used.
“Gorman has seen his stock rise to such an extent that he’s poised, as never before, to make the leap from cult figure to mainstream phenomenon.” Daily Telegraph
“Beautifully structured, endearingly honest... joyous”
As the 50th anniversary of Edith Piaf’s death approaches, this powerful celebration comes from a company whose credentials include Kneehigh Theatre and Canteve Vocale. Piaf has become synonymous with French Cabaret of the 1940s and 50s and remains France’s most popular singer. Eve Loiseau’s passion for Piaf developed at a young age around the dining table in South East France. Coming from a French family of singers, long summer meals were often rounded off with French chansons. Piaf is inimitable, but Eve’s lustrous French tone captures the essence of the Piaf performance in this tribute to the ‘Little Sparrow’. Includes the iconic songs: ‘La Vie en Rose’, ‘Sous le ciel de Paris’, ‘Autumn Leaves’, ‘Padam’, ‘Mon Dieu’, ‘L’hymne a L’amour’, and ‘Non je ne regrette rien’.
“A beguiling blend of the smart and the stupid…a real delight”
“It’s impossible to imagine Eve Loiseau – or anyone – improving on her miraculous recreation of the great French singer Edith Piaf ”

Sherlock Holmes … the last act!
The King’s Singers
Written by David Stuart Davies
One of the world’s most celebrated ensembles, The King’s Singers have a packed schedule of concerts, recordings, media and education work that spans the globe. Championing the work of young and established composers, they remain consummate entertainers; a class act with a delightfully British wit. The King’s Singers are instantly recognisable for their spot-on intonation, impeccable vocal blend, the flawless articulation of the text and incisive timing.
The world’s greatest fictional detective confronts the most complex case of all… his own psyche. Fine wit, humour, high drama, and a touch of pathos – “elementary” aspects of this original and entertaining solo play. It explores the mind of the real man – not ‘the thinking machine’, a passionate and secretive man, with a cutting sense of humour. Stripping away his infamous clinical façade, Holmes reveals unexpected fears and weaknesses.
“In these elegant hands, this is Holmes as you’ve always imagined him – but with a cutting sense of humour”
To mark the Diamond Jubilee of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II in 2012, The King’s Singers have created a lively programme of secular music from the reigns of some of the Queen’s more colourful forebears, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and Victoria. The King’s Singers arrive in Harrogate following a world tour which has seen them perform in many prestigious venues including The Sydney Opera House and Carnegie Hall, New York.

Monkey Poet’s Murder Mystery
John Cooper Clarke
Think Bill Hicks meets Mark Thomas, add a splash of rhyme and you’ve got Monkey Poet.
Dubbed “The Bard of Salford” and given the moniker “punk poet” with his biting, satirical, political and very funny verse delivered in a rapid-fire performance style, John Cooper Clarke was initially the support act for many seminal punk bands such as the Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, The Fall, Joy Division, Elvis Costello and Siouxsie & the Banshees. John was soon headlining his own gigs and drawing huge crowds of fans.
Philip Marlowe meets classic Clint Eastwood and Last Man Standing. A comedy-film-noir-mysterymurder-poetry-thriller. A serial killer is killing the poets on Literature Lane and Beat St, and frankly, no one cares... Who would? Sylvia Plath calls on Monkey Poet to investigate Keats’ death. This case has nothing to do with daffodils. Shakespeare warns him off the case, Homer wants him to take it, Wilde winks suggestively, and Monkey Poet gets drawn into a mystery that answers the greatest question of all. Why bother with poetry?

Sir Ranulph Fiennes

The Twist
Presented by Odd Doll Productions
When world-renowned polar explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes turned his attentions from the great frozen wilderness of the Poles to the world’s highest and most testing mountains he faced several challenges. For a start he was just entering his sixties and recovering from a very severe heart attack, had no climbing experience and, not least, suffered from vertigo! This is the inspirational story about how he conquered those fears.
Inspired by Hans Christian Anderson’s The Shadow, Total Theatre Award winners Odd Doll Productions have created this contemporary fairytale; combining puppetry and theatre with a live original music score. Featuring angry pegs, dancing scissors, magic taps and flying creatures; The Trick is playful, beautiful and tragic.
‘Happy Days’ meets ‘Buddy’ in a 50s & 60s Rock ‘n’ Roll Epic. Starring and created by Strictly Come Dancing lead singer Chris Madin and West End sweetheart Suzi Jay.
Interviewed on stage by acclaimed high altitude mountaineer and photographer/cameraman Ian Parnell, Sir Ranulph Fiennes will talk about his expeditions to The Eiger and to Everest. Ian accompanied Sir Ranulph on both mountains, filming for television broadcasts, and will illustrate the evening with footage (some unseen) and stills whilst Sir Ranulph will explain what it takes to finally stand on top of the world and raise well over a million pounds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Afraid of your own shadow? You should be. What if it was to share your secrets with the rest of the world? Driven by a desire to create something original, one man releases control of his own shadow, in the hope that it will discover a kind of beauty that he can only dream of. Instead, it reveals to him a stark reality, as creative success swiftly degenerates into a moral battle between light and dark.

HARROGATE THEATRE
Fri 7 – Sat 22 Sept
A Government Inspector Adapted by Deborah McAndrew from the original play by Nikolai Gogol Directed and Composed by Conrad Nelson Presented by Northern Broadside in partnership with Harrogate Theatre ‘Where there’s muck there’s brass’… and this hysterically funny tale of misdeeds, misadventure and mistaken identity has plenty of both. In a small Pennine town a flash ‘stranger’ is mistaken for the Government Inspector. The town’s unscrupulous Councillors, fearing discovery of their corrupt goings-on, do all they can to ingratiate themselves. Bribes, backhanders and brown envelopes abound and the stranger, who has an eye for a quick buck, takes full advantage with hilarious results.
Who better to breathe life and vigour into this barmy story than Halfax based Northern Broadsides, one of the country’s finest and bestloved touring theatre companies. If you like your humour broad, your references topical, your heart warmed and your brass ‘live’, look no further than A Government Inspector. Absurdly funny, clever and strangely familiar, you’ll never trust your local authority again… if you ever did that is!

“You never forget your first fight. And you shouldn’t, either.” Tom and Simon have been mates since school; shared everything – homework, cars, girlfriends; you name it, they’ve both had their hands on it. But whilst Sy has always played it safe, Tom likes to push things to extremes... with occasionally violent repercussions. After an ill-advised evening, the wife of local nutcase Mad Mark Flynn, Sy is starting to worry if Tom might have bitten off more than he can chew. He needs protection. He needs to get out of town. And then he meets Foster. A former boxer with a left hook to die for (or from), Foster takes Tom under his wing. But is there more to his interest than meets the eye? And why won’t he talk about his past? Partly inspired by true events, Reform Theatre from Sheffield, are proud to bring you the world premiere of a thrilling new play from the writer of My Favourite Summer and Housebound.

HARROGATE THEATRE
The Lighthouse On Shivering Sands Adapted from the short story by JS Fletcher by Nobby Dimon Directed by Nobby Dimon Presented by North Country Theatre & Harrogate Theatre Another hilarious ripping yarn from the makers of The 39 Steps, A Blood Wedding in Wensleydale & The Rocking Horse Winner. Strange tales were told of Shivering Sands – of light house keepers gone mad, mermaids and sea monsters, disappearances and hauntings. None of that scared Mordechai Chiddock, but had he known that Jezreel Cornish was one of the keepers he’d never have set foot on that cursed rock. And now the supply boat would not be back for a month and Chiddock knew that either he or Cornish would be dead long before then. Over the last 15 years from their base in Richmond, North Country Theatre have created many tongue in cheek theatrical adaptations of works by great adventure writers such as Conan Doyle and Kipling, now they turn their attention to spooky sea-faring horror – sun, sea, sand and strangled laughter awaits. tickets: Circle £18 | Stalls £16 | Balcony £14 | BOXes £64

Written by Alan Bennett this performance draws on musical references including Elgar, Delius and well-known hymns to explore the role music played in Bennett’s childhood.
This season of three very different, highly theatrical operas written in the middle of the 20th century is sure to appeal to opera-goers who are interested in theatre, and theatre-goers who would like to try opera.

The Lighthouse
The Emperor of Atlantis
Peter Maxwell Davies Far from a village comedy this Opera thriller is a taut, psychological drama treating the true story of the three Flannan Isles lighthouse keepers who disappeared over Christmas, 1900. The score pulsates with energy, and conjures perfectly the claustrophobia of the fogbound island and the lighthouse itself.
Fri 2 Nov
Albert Herring
Viktor Ullman This Opera is most famous for the circumstances of its composition: the composer, librettist, and all the original performers were inmates of a ‘model’ concentration camp, paraded before Red Cross authorities before being sent to their deaths at Auschwitz. The Opera is a black comedy, innovative in musical style and dramatic presentation. Paired by the director with Bach’s haunting cantata Christ lag in Todesbanden, it promises to be an unforgettable evening.
Benjamin Britten Best known is Britten’s sophisticated comedy of village life, Albert Herring – for which ETO has a sterling cast of worthies and ingénues, acting singers from the top drawer of British artists. The director will set it in period, so that the comedy of class and sexual mores will have full effect, and the conductor will bring to it his deep knowledge of (and love for) Britten’s score.
