elcome to the Summer Edition! Hope it has been a good season for you so far. My season has been pretty darn good, mostly because my wonky back has co-operated, which has allowed me to play more rounds than I ever have. I've often wondered what would happen to my game if I was finally able to find the time to play and practise more. Would I become that halfway decent golfer that I imagined in my dreams? Or would playing more just confirm that lack of time on the course is not the thing that is holding me back! Well, thus far into the season I can report mixed results. I've had plenty of rounds I would describe as somewhere between brutal and mediocre. But on some occasions - when the stars and my putts aligned I've achieved some personal bests. I guess that's pretty typical. Golf improvement, they tell me, doesn't occur in a straight line. It's more like a rollercoaster ride which at times can be downright scary. So for now I'll hold on tight and see what the rest of the season brings. Speaking of the remainder of the season, this will be the final edition for 2021 but coverage of the regional golf scene will continue on all social media channels and the golfbrucegreysimcoe.com website. Enjoy this edition and stay tuned for more golf news in the weeks ahead. - Publisher/Editor Steve Harron harronmarketing@gmail.com *** A final note: Thank you to all my advertisers, supporters and contributors. Your support has allowed me to cover the local golf scene for 17 years and for that I am truly thankful.

A six-year-old from Sue Westwood Golf Academy at Orr Lake Golf Club has qualified for Golf Canada's National Junior Skills Challenge. Brynlee Chappell will compete in the Age 8 and under female category of the event, which will be held Aug. 28-29 at TPC Toronto Osprey Valley. Brynlee is ranked 5th in Ontario and 9th in Canada out of 62 females. She qualified through a July 18 event at Orr Lake Golf Club earlier this season. Also qualifying from that event was Page Sefton of Barrie, who will compete in the Age 1214 Female division. The Junior Skills Challenge is an online and interactive program that focuses on developing the key golf skills of putting, chipping and driving. The online leaderboard allows instructors to upload players’ scores so they can track their improvement.

History at a glance • Irv Cowen, who ran a confectionary in Toronto, purchased a rundown motel and lodge and five cottages at Pike Lake in 1961. • Under Irv's direction, the resort experienced remarkable growth and camping was added, largely a result of trying to serve the needs of the Harriston Hockey School where parents wanted a place to camp while their children attended the school. • By 1983, camping was strong and the owners were involved in building a second 9 holes. • Trailer sales were added around this time after a persistent salesman from Northlander convinced them to keep a trailer at the resort (it sold the very first weekend). • The resort is now one of the top Northlander dealers in Ontario and has achieved more than $100 million in Northlander trailer sales over the years. • In the spring of 1986 a new 9 holes, designed by Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Robbie Robinson, was opened for play. • The clubhouse was expanded and renovated and when it opened in 1989 it could handle crowds of about 230 people - double the previous capacity. • A 20-room motel opened in 1999 • Another 9 holes, designed by Shawn Watters, were added in 2002. • The newest 9 - a links style - was integrated with the parkland style Robbie Robinson design to form a new 18-hole configuration. • The original 9 holes - dramatically redesigned by that point - formed a separate layout known as the Lake Course.

The visionary Irv Cowen was a visionary and a risk-taker who could see the potential in a 9-hole golf course with no irrigation and a small, rundown clubhouse with sinking floors. He also had to look past the poor condition of the motel and lodge and five cottages that were part of the real estate deal that brought him and his family from Toronto to operate Pike Lake in 1961. Sixty years later the 500-acre property west of Mount Forest has been transformed into a golf and camping resort with 27 championship holes, 375 seasonal camping sites, 110 permanent homes, 25 overnight sites and a 20-room motel. “This was his dream…his vision and he loved every day he came to work here,” said his wife Joan in an interview. “He was the driving force behind this.” When the Pike Lake property came up

for sale, Cowen was running a confectionary in Toronto and playing his regular Wednesday golf game at Humber Valley Golf Course. A real estate salesman who was a regular customer at the store noticed that he played golf and was able to convince him to take a drive to Pike Lake to view the property. They were able to strike a property swap deal which saw the golf course owner, Cyril O’Reilly of Toronto, take over the store and Cowen take over the golf course property. There was plenty of work to be done at Pike Lake but Cowen was no stranger to hard work and made his dream a reality. Since his death more than 10 years ago, his work has been carried on by Joan and their children, Herb, Tom and Jeanne Cowen-Brown.

Famous designer at a discounted price

Robbie Robinson, who worked for the legendary Stanley Thompson early in his career, was in his 80s when he designed the second nine holes at Pike Lake. It was one of his last projects before his death on Dec. 29, 1989. The owners couldn’t really afford a designer of Robinson’s stature but they got a break on the price because of two factors: Robinson was extremely impressed with the picturesque Pike Lake property and his brother ran a Ford dealership in nearby Harriston.

Congratulations to the Cowen Family and the dedicated employees of Pike Lake on your 60 years of success! A company that doesn’t have history, may not have a future.

Celebrating the 60th!

To celebrate the 60th Anniversary, the Cowen family held a fun 9-hole golf tournament on the Lake course on the long weekend in August. After golf, the 180 members, campers and staff in attendance were treated to free hotdogs, hamburgers and numerous prizes were handed out, including $10,000 in cash prizes for campers. The event also featured live entertainment and fireworks.

In 1961, Irv and Joan Cowen purchased a small campground and 9 hole golf course near Clifford, Ontario. Their vision to grow the business through hard work, strong family values and a commitment to provide a great customer experience has stood the test of time. Irv and Joan’s influence and core values have continued throughout the years and remain the key elements of Pike Lake’s success. From the moment that you first meet whether an RV customer, a guest, golfer or supplier, the Cowen’s make you feel like family. Over the years they have developed a reputation as a premier golf course and campground facility. Thousands of guests are welcomed to Pike Lake each year to enjoy all of the amenities it has to offer. It is quality of the experience that keeps everyone coming back year after year. Northlander feels very privileged to have partnered with such an outstanding company for over 50 years. Together we have created meaningful business and personal relationships. Northlander has enjoyed sharing in Pike Lake’s past milestones and accomplishments, and we very much look forward to celebrating many more. Pike Lake has sold Northlanders from British Columbia to Newfoundland with over $100 million in sales. They have been an integral part of our company’s success and together we recently celebrated the 20,000th Northlander unit being produced at our facility. 60 years of business success is a remarkable accomplishment and the Cowen family continue to be significant contributors to the community, campground and RV industry. The vision that started back in 1961 remains as strong today as it was back then. The journey is the reward.

Curtis Braun is the new assistant pro at Cobble Beach Golf Links

Curtis Braun is the new assistant golf professional

at Cobble Beach Golf Links. Born in Brampton and raised in Caledon, Curtis starting playing golf regularly at age 16 and began working in the industry after finishing high school. His first job was at Caledon Country Club and he spent six years there before leaving to attend Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia where he played on the varsity baseball team and studied Business. He returned to Ontario one year later and enrolled in the Marketing and Advertising program at Sheridan College. After graduating, he found he was more interested in returning to the golf industry than working in marketing and advertising.

This led him to a position as Back Shop Manager at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley near Orangeville. And when a Playing Ability Test event came to the course last August, he signed up and passed the test – a requirement for becoming a PGA of Canada pro. He became aware of the Cobble Beach opportunity through Osprey Valley assistant pro Ryan Jackson, who left Osprey this year to return to Cobble Beach. Jackson and Head Pro Ryan McBride, along with Executive Golf Pro Warren Thomas, have been doing most of the golf instruction so far this season but the plan is to have Braun do more teaching as the season progresses. Braun said he is thrilled to be part of the team at Cobble Beach.

Next step for Nesbitt

Simcoe pro gets shot at Korn Ferry Tour after strong season on PGA Tour Latinoamerica

Simcoe County pro golfer Drew Nesbitt recently

finished up the season in 8th place on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica. After finishing tied for 6th in the final event – the July 22-25 Bupa Championship in Tulum, Mexico - the former Horseshoe Valley resident ended up with 795 points on the Points List. His 8th place finish gives him an exemption to the final stage of the Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying School. Players who advance to Final Stage are assured a Korn Ferry Tour card for the following season, and the top 45 finishers (and ties) at Final Stage are assured a healthy number of starts in the first part of the following Korn Ferry Tour season. The Korn Ferry Tour is the developmental tour for the U.S.-based PGA Tour, and features professional golfers who have either not yet reached the PGA Tour, or who have done so but then failed to win enough FedEx Cup points to stay at that level. Final Qualifying will take place Nov. 4-7 at the Landings Club in Savannah, Georgia. While Nesbitt gets his shot at the next level in November, there was a point during the season where he was in the 5th position on the Points List – the final spot that would have guaranteed full membership on the Korn Ferry Tour for the 2022 season. Besides his 6th place finish last month, Nesbitt’s season also included solo 2nd finishes at the Banco del Pacifico Open in Ecudaor in June and the Mexico Open championship in March where he lost in a playoff. Nesbitt has been in the limelight several times during his 7 years as a pro golfer.

Popular event set for Sept. 16 at Saugeen Golf Club

DREW NESBITT He won a regional qualifier and played in the Canadian Open in 2017, narrowly missing the cut. And he is the only golfer in history to shoot 59 on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica. In 2019, he got some serious TV and social media exposure (no pun intended) when he took off his shirt and rolled up his pants then hit a great shot out of the water at the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic. The shot set him up for a par and the stroke he saved by hitting out of the water was the difference as he made the cut right on the number.

The tournament will take on a scaleddown format but will maintain its normal high standards, including Hole-in-One & Closest-to-Pin opportunities, commemorative souvenirs and much more! Celebrating its 29th year, the tournament continues to be the flagship means of funding for Crime Stoppers with donations to date of more than $530,000. The annual Ryder Cup, renamed Southampton Cup, was held last month with Team Urstadt up against Team Lazenby. On the first day, the format was match play, a two-man best ball, where the low net score of a team counts toward winning the hole. After day one, the teams were tied, 3–3. On day two, the format was a twoman scramble. The final point total was Team Urstadt 7.5 points; Team Lazenby 4.5 points. It was closer than the results indicate, as two matches were settled on the 18th hole.
