A Message from the Mayor We welcome you to Owen Sound during the Winter Season. This Winter Guide for 2017-2018 is your resource for all that is happening in the City from now until spring!
Owen Sound offers an abundance of recreational, cultural and leisure activities year-round, and the winter season is no exception. There are outdoor activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, skating, fishing and snowmobiling. And inside, there is live music, theatre, festivals and fast-paced OHL hockey featuring the Owen Sound Attack. Whether you are visiting, new to our community, or a long-time resident, we trust you will experience and share the warmth and hospitality for which we are known.
I encourage you to attend this year’s Festival of Northern Lights, now celebrating its 30th year! The festival has been recognized with special awards over the years. When you see the displays of thousands of twinkling lights along the Sydenham River to the harbour and at Harrison Park, you will see why! Other special events include our Family New Year’s Eve Celebration, the Lupercalia Multi-Arts Festival, Chinese New Year Celebration and 1st Friday events downtown. Visit our local farmers’ market, museums and art galleries, or enjoy a night out at one of our many venues for performing arts. I hope that you will visit Owen Sound’s unique downtown stores, dining and accommodations. There is something for everyone. On behalf of Council and staff, I wish everyone a very safe, enjoyable and active winter in Owen Sound!

visitgrey.ca 2 | Owen Sound & Area WINTER GUIDE 2016/2017
Let it Snow, Let it Snow! Your guide to outdoor winter fun in one of Ontario’s snowbelt regions
east of Owen Sound – meaning you can be back in time for dinner!
Winter brings its own kind of charm in Owen Sound, especially if you like the outdoors. Waterfalls become exquisite snow sculptures, trails lead through quiet forests and open fields, while hills beckon anyone with a toboggan. Here’s a rundown of our winter pursuits:
Snowmobiling
Many routes begin and end in Owen Sound, a sledder’s paradise. There are more than 3,600 kilometres of trails in the region (District 9) and numerous clubhouses. Check out the Bruce Peninsula tour, Walter’s Falls tour, Queen’s Bush tour and Saugeen River tour at snowmobilegreybruce.com.
Tobogganing The Harrison Park toboggan hill is legendary! The perennial favourite of thrill-seekers, it has a smaller hill at the bottom. Gentler slopes can be found in downtown Owen Sound at Ryerson Park off 8th Street East or near Indian Falls off County Road 1.
Outdoor Skating
Harrison Park wins again with its Scenic City Order of Good Cheer rink, which is especially pretty during the Festival of Northern Lights. The HOSE rule applies, meaning Hockey on Odd days, Skating on Even-numbered ones. Admission free.
Winter Waterfalls
A pair of snowshoes is your ticket to discovering the beauty of our waterfalls when the snow gets deep, including Inglis Falls, Weaver’s Creek Falls and Jones Falls. Bring a ski pole or walking stick for good measure. (If you’re keen on the waterfalls and snow is sparse, you can hike to them instead.)
Trail Rides and Sleigh Rides
Glendale Farms in nearby Benallen offers sleigh rides through the woods! Visit glendale-farms.com or call
Cross-Country Skiing
The beautiful Massie Hills Trails are operated by the Owen Sound Cross Country Club. Photo by Tom Hakala 519-376-9027. Windsong Horse & Carriage will tour you around Owen Sound in a horse-drawn carriage during the Festival of Northern Lights, or you can head out to their farm for a trail ride in the country. Call 519-376-1518 or visit windsongcarriage.com.
Fishing
Owen Sound bay is great for icefishing when it freezes over, usually in early February. Open water angling on the Sydenham and Pottawatomi rivers will net you rainbow trout.
Downhill Skiing
The Blue Mountain area boasts some terrific ski slopes and is only 40 minutes
For 11 kilometres of skate-skiing, classic skiing, or a refreshing night ski, head to the Sawmills Nordic Centre on Highway 6 near Hepworth. It’s run by the Bruce Ski Club (bruceskiclub.ca) and a heated log cabin is available for changing and snacks. You can rent skis at Suntrail Source for Adventure (call 519935-2478 or visit suntrail.net). Sawmill also features 5 km of snowshoeing trails. The Owen Sound Cross Country Ski Club offers 9.6 km of groomed wilderness trails at Massie Hills for classic skiing and snowshoeing (massiehills.com), 2 km south of Grey Road 18 on Concession 6. Cobble Beach Resort just north of Owen Sound also offers 18 km of groomed trails, and snowshoes are available for rent at the clubhouse. If you’re hankering for the adventure of an ungroomed trail, try Inglis Falls, Harrison Park, the West Rocks, Jones Falls or Hibou Conservation Area.

Celebrating 30 years of Winter Magic
Special events planned this year to mark milestone of Festival of Northern Lights The Festival of Northern Lights will be even more dazzling and feature even more family-friendly events this year as the holiday spectacle marks its 30th year.
some new displays into the current technologies of lighting. This is where the future of Christmas lighting is going to go.”
It will continue until Jan. 7, with the displays illuminating each day from 5 to 10 p.m.
The festival’s lights and displays now illuminate both sides of the Sydenham River in downtown Owen Sound and continue along 2nd Avenue East into Harrison Park.
The much-loved Owen Sound tradition, which includes many kilometres of colourful lights and multiple eye-catching displays, will begin with opening ceremonies and a flipping of the switch on Saturday, Nov. 18.
“Because it’s the 30th year, we wanted to do something extra special,” says festival chairman Jamie Walpole.
New this year, the non-profit Festival of Northern Lights organization will be taking over the planning and staging of the annual Festival in the Park, which had been put on by the Scenic City Order of Good Cheer with city support. The event, set for Dec. 2 at Harrison Park, is a popular holiday-themed festival for the entire family.
Walpole says an event will also be added for Jan. 6 to close out the festival. It will include a dance party and other activities. A 17-foot-tall computerized “mega tree” will be among the new displays.
“It’s absolutely insane,” Walpole says. “It is programmed through software and has over 500 LED lights that can be individually controlled.” There will also be a new rope light display featuring the wildly popular Minions characters and a display
The Festival of Northern Lights, which was founded by Walpole’s grandmother Marie and father Robert, began in 1987. It has grown each year since.
Photo by Lynn Reket inspired by the paintings of Canadian icon Tom Thomson.
“Similar to the mega tree, we are also going to have a Christmas present that will have even more controllable lights on it,” Walpole says. “What we’re doing is moving
Walpole says attending the festival has become a tradition for many families and the event continues to attract new visitors. “This is a festival for the community, put on by the community,” he says. “This is a seven-week event that attracts people from all over. It’s good for everybody and it means something to people and that’s what really matters.”
Festival seeking volunteers Festival of Northern Lights organizers are actively seeking volunteers to help with the event.
Chairman Jamie Walpole said the festival’s administrator is the only paid employee. Everyone else – from board members to the set-up and take-down crews to those who paint and repair displays – are volunteers.
“Many of those volunteers have been doing this for a very, very long time,” he said. “It’s time for us to also get the next generation involved.”
4 | Owen Sound & Area WINTER GUIDE 2017/2018
To help recruit volunteers, the festival will be doing a lot of the work to set up and take down the lights and displays on Saturdays, instead of only Monday to Friday.
“So people that work can still participate,” he said. “We are in need of volunteers for a variety of roles. If anyone is interested and has any time – during the week or on the weekend – we want to hear from them.” Visit www.fonl.ca or call 519-3761440 ext. 1225 for more information.

Music for a Long Winter’s Night ’Tis the season for great sounds around the Scenic City
Few things warm the heart like music, and you don’t have to go far to find it in Owen Sound! Winter is the season for choral and orchestral music, Celtic fiddle and flute, and rock, country, reggae and alternative bands at downtown venues like Heartwood Concert Hall, Jazzmyn’s, the Harmony Centre and the Roxy Theatre. During the annual Lupercalia MultiArts Festival in February, almost anything goes. Prepare to be surprised! This year’s festival will have a special focus on women and children, says Artistic Director Philly Markowitz. If classical music brightens your evening, check out the Georgian Bay Symphony’s winter program. The 50-member orchestra has three concerts planned: Christmas Cheer, featuring Rob Tite on clarinet, Dec. 9th; Baroque to Romantic, featuring Nora Pellerin and Reanne Kruisselbrink on violin Feb. 10th; and Bravo! Beethoven! featuring the internationally acclaimed Ilya Poletaev on piano March 24th.
Poletaev is “a very talented and very humble artist,” says Francois Koh, the symphony’s music director and conductor. Concerts take place at East Ridge Community School (the former OSCVI) and admission for students under 25 years of age is only $5. “We would like more young people,” Koh notes. The symphony is also offering a 50 per cent discount for new subscribers to its 20172018 season. If you’re new to classical music, the Christmas Cheer Concert or Family Christmas Concert, both on Dec. 9th, are good places to start. The Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols at the historic Leith Church on Dec. 17 is
also very popular. The small church fills up quickly, so arrive early. If you enjoy tapping your toes and moving your body to music, head to one of the Fiddlefern Country Dances at St. George’s Church Hall, held the first Saturday of each month. You don’t need to know any dance moves to attend; just listen to the caller and let others guide you through it. Heartwood Concert Hall offers a huge array of bands and musicians, pretty much weekly throughout the winter, and hosts a bi-monthly open mic session. Visit their Facebook page for performances, tickets and information. The Roxy Theatre’s winter lineup includes Coco Love Alcorn, the Beckett Family, tribute bands and more! Choral groups such as the Georgian Bay Concert Choir, Owen Sound Singers in Accord and Rock the Sound Choir also perform during the winter. Visit OwenSoundTourism.ca/events to find what else might be music to your ears!

Downtown Owen Sound’s got you covered Moonlight Madness, Frisky 1st Friday, live theatre, craft shows and more!
Downtown Owen Sound will be in full holiday mode as of mid-November, and won’t slow down until the Jolly Old Elf hangs up his hat at the end of the Christmas season. Friday, Nov. 17th marks Moonlight Madness, a popular annual event hosted by the Downtown Improvement Area. There will be carollers on the streets, a DJ playing Christmas music and free horse-drawn carriage rides by Windsong Farms. “Moonlight Madness is an opportunity for mom, dad, or both of them to come and do some shopping, without the kids,” says DIA manager Debbie Blackshaw. Participating stores will remain open until 10 p.m. and the atmosphere promises to be warm and lively. That same evening there will be Monty Python’s “Spamalot” at the Roxy Theatre, live music at Jazzmyn’s and the Bleeding Carrot restaurants, and the Pottawatomi Spinners and Weavers Guild craft
show and sale at the library, a great opportunity to purchase some woollies. If you happen to miss Moonlight Madness, be sure to head downtown for Festive 1st Friday on December 1st. Louise Jarvis and her Owen Sound Singers in Accord (OSSIA) group will be carolling in the streets and Windsong will be back with more horse-drawn carriage rides, a delight in any season. The Slocan Ramblers, a bluegrass group, will be playing at the Roxy and the Owen Sound Artists’ Co-op will be sure to entertain with its Photo Booth. Moonlight Madness runs until 9 p.m., with 30 to 40 businesses taking part. For more information, visit downtownowensound.ca and check out their Facebook events page. The DIA will also be running its “24 Days of Christmas” promotion again, featuring two unique businesses each day. It’s an opportunity to check out stores or restaurants that you might not yet have discovered.
While downtown, keep in mind that the Tom Thomson Art Gallery and Billy Bishop Home & Museum are open throughout the winter and feature new exhibits. The Owen Sound Farmers’ Market is also open year-round, every Saturday morning. The Fine Craft Christmas Show & Sale will return to the Harmony Centre Nov. 17-19 and Heartwood Hall will be hosting its Christmas Vendors’ Market on Dec. 9. Also popular is the annual Christmas Train Sale at the Community Waterfront Heritage Centre on Nov. 18, the same day as the Santa Claus Parade and Festival of Northern Lights opening. If you’re looking for Christmas decorating ideas, sign up for the Holiday Tour of Homes, Nov. 25-26. While not a DIA event, it includes some downtown merchants such as Barebirch, Décor Design and Awesome Blossoms. Post-holidays, mark Friday, Feb. 2 on your calendar for Frisky 1st Friday.
