Welcome

Thank you for your interest in Harrow College. In this prospectus you will find details of the wide range of programmes we offer – the most extensive choice for people in the Harrow area. This breadth of choice means that you should be able to find a programme of study or course that meets your individual needs in terms of your personal and career goals. No matter what qualifications you have or have not obtained previously, we will help you to make your decision about what course and programme is right for you - the one that gives you the best possible chance of success in the future. Whether success on your chosen programme will take you on to further study at Harrow College, directly into employment and/or a better job or to your chosen university, we are committed to helping you develop the skills to succeed in life. We are committed to providing a high quality learner experience and at our recent Ofsted inspection that took place in April 2013 we were judged by inspectors as being “Good”. Inspectors said that “the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere at Harrow College helps all learners reach their full potential”. In addition, our most recent nationally published success rates show that Harrow College was the top performing FE College in London out of 33 London FE colleges overall for adults on long courses of more than 24 weeks (*). In addition to the range of programmes that can be studied at the College, this prospectus also outlines the comprehensive range of support services and state of the art facilities, such as our new Physics Laboratories at Harrow Weald, available to you. So, for example, if you need careers advice, support with completing your university application, access to the most up to date software to support your studies or information about how we support students who wish to undertake volunteering in their local community, staff from our Learner Services Team are on hand to help you and give you expert advice. I hope that you find this prospectus useful and that we have provided you with everything you need. However, please do contact us on 020 8909 6000 if you would like any further information. We look forward to seeing you at Harrow College soon. Harrow College Alumni The College enjoys a relationship with previous students to ensure that development is kept open for existing students to share their learning and experience through opportunities like shadowing, mentoring or volunteering. Harrow College values the experience that all students have during their time of study and actively encourages them to join the Alumni programme. Through this the College is able to maintain an open form of communication and stay abreast of student progression. Alumni registrants will also benefit from maintaining a relationship with the College by being able to gain support for CV writing, interview techniques and professional support.

Sladzhana Dimitrova NVQ Beauty Therapy 2010 – 12

Since graduating from Harrow College Richard has become one of the most recognised figures in the world of canoeing. At the London Olympics he won silver to add to his gold from the European Championships. “To win an Olympic medal in the city I was born and raised was a dream come true. From the point London won the bid to host the Olympics, I had one goal – to win big in London.” “Going to College made me realise that to get to where you want to be, you have to do things that challenge you. It’s like training, I don’t enjoy the really hard sessions but I know I need to do it to achieve sporting success.” 020 8909 6000 Prospectus_v24.indd 11

As a former student of Harrow College, Sladzhana Dimitrova was able to develop her skills and experience whilst learning at the College’s salon, Image, where she now works. She hopes this experience will allow her to open her own salon in the future. “The tutors encouraged me to enter competitions. I won awards from the College on my Level 2 and 3 courses and then competed in the World Skills competition.” “Participating in World skills was an exciting experience and winning the gold medal at the regional heat even better. .” “I was put through to the final of the competition held at the NEC in Birmingham. I didn’t win a medal in the final but I became more confident in performing treatments and working under pressure.”

Avijit Choudhury A Level Economics, Maths and Statistics, Computer Studies 1991 – 94 Avijit Choudhury, director at one of the world’s leading investment banks, took his initial step to success at Harrow College. After completing A-Levels he went on to study at the University of Liverpool. He also has an MBA from Cass Business School. “I chose Harrow College because it seemed the best in terms of facilities and reputation. I have many friends from the College who today are dotted around the world!” “It provided me with the freedom to grow. The relationship between teacher and pupil was more relaxed than at school, and I arrived at university confident and comfortable with my skills and discipline.” 11

Introduction 22/10/2013 17:58:37

Steps to apply 1. Choose a course What subjects do you want to study? What interests you? What are your career goals? Once you know the answer to all or at least one of these questions, it may help you to decide what course to study. All programmes of study include your main qualification, enrichment and tutorials. Students who have not achieved a grade C or better in GCSE English and/or Maths will be required to develop their literacy and numeracy skills, and work towards achieving these qualifications. You will also develop employability and enterprise skills which will support you to stand out in the future. This guide has all the information that you need to apply for a course at Harrow College. Our website has a full listing of all of our programmes with detailed information to help you make the right choice. You may also want to consider attending an open day. These are a great way to get a taste of what College life is all about. You have the opportunity to speak to programme tutors, find more information about the course you want to do and tour the campus.

2. Complete an application form

3. Interview

Once you have chosen the programme that you wish to study, you can apply by submitting an online application via our website. Application forms are also available from Reception at both of our campuses. For most of our courses, we accept applications throughout the year, however many of our courses are extremely popular and due to limited places an early application is advised.

Once we have received your complete application form, we will contact you via letter with a date for an initial interview. Your letter will contain full details of your interview date, time and location. If your interview is successful, you will receive an offer letter for the course of your choice, subject to you achieving the required results.

4. Enrolment

5. ID Card

You will be invited by letter to complete your enrolment, usually at the campus where you have applied. Enrolment takes place through August and early September. It is vital that you attend enrolment; failure to attend may result in you losing your place. Even if you do not achieve your predicted results, still come along on the enrolment date you have been given, with your results. Staff will be on hand to help you with alternative programme choices.

Once you have completed your enrolment, you can collect your ID card. You are now a Harrow College student!

Creative Media We have some of the best facilities and staff teaching in London with studios that have industry-standard kit and lecturers that have vast experience from all areas of the creative industry. Courses look not only at the media industry’s impact on society but also how it constructs and influences youth identities. We get stuck into topical media issues and debates surrounding the internet, film and advertising and the video game industry, whilst also exploring how the media communicates meaning to its audiences. You’ll work on your own and in groups to critically analyse a range of media products. Then you have the chance to create your own media product using the latest technology, such as Final Cut Pro and In Design. We’ll also encourage you to raise your profile by posting your work onto digital blogs. Completion of a media course could offer the potential to progress onto a university degree course or you could also go straight into employment within the media industry. Eventually your studies could see you launch a career in journalism, marketing or public relations.

ESOL At Harrow College we aim to ensure that students feel that they have more than just a place to study. We embrace a sense of community amongst staff and students at our diverse and multi-cultural campuses. An ESOL class will aim to develop your ability to consider further study, find work and speak with confidence. You’ll learn to communicate through speaking, listening, reading and writing. Citizenship will also be covered throughout the course. In addition to this, you’ll gain a recognised qualification and can progress to continue your studies at a higher level. Participating in an ESOL class is a great way to make new friends and develop your understanding of life and culture in the UK. You’ll meet like-minded people and have the chance to enjoy occasions at the College such as our annual International Food Fair.

Learners with Learning Difficulties/Disabilities (LLDD) Harrow College offers a fantastic environment for Learners with Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities (LLDD). Support is provided by experienced tutors that are experts in their field and able to offer individual advice whilst monitoring progression and identifying suitable routes for development. We pride ourselves on offering high quality courses where our learners are enabled to actively participate and contribute in the community by being able to take responsibility and exercise control over their own lives. Course content often involves seeking new ways to encourage independence and fulfilment through a range of learning channels. Our curriculum includes two full time pre-entry courses for individuals aged 16 and over that may need additional support and want to develop their employability skills, confidence and independence. All qualifications are certified by Foundation Learning. The core topics are communications, numeracy and information technology, skills for everyday life and employment, travel training, work related skills and enterprise. The LLDD students also run a shop at the Harrow Weald campus called ‘Bits n Bobs’ where they sell a variety of goods for students and staff. The shop was created for the students by the students with their involvement in all areas from the start-up operations, including marketing, location and design of the shop, product buying, advertising and pricing. The students also produce many of the products, including key-rings, bookmarks and seasonal items such as Christmas cards. There are also regular opportunities for students to take part in charity, enterprise and sustainability projects. In 2013, the LLDD students were successfully awarded the Anne Swain Award for their contribution towards maximising the biodiversity at the Harrow Weald campus. Recent events have also included participating in fundraising activity for Macmillan Cancer Research to support an on-site coffee morning.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions Q: At school there are very strong relationships between staff and pupils. What is it like at College?

A: The best people to ask about this are our students. Read some of their profiles and quotes included in this prospectus and on our website www.harrow.ac.uk. We get very positive feedback about how supportive and caring our teachers and lecturers are.

Q: What about help with getting into university or employment? A: Getting into university or employment is what many students do upon leaving Harrow College. We help young people to prepare their application and their personal statement, and arrange visits to universities and HE Fairs. As part of our service, Careers and Employability team also run workshops to support learners with the preparation of CVs and interview skills. We also offer other events such as ‘Mock Interview Day’ to prepare for the world of work, for delivery to employment.

Q: How multi-cultural is the College? A; We have students from many diverse groups and a variety of backgrounds, as well as a growing number of international students. This makes for a brilliant mix and ideal preparation for the diversity of universities and the workplace.

Q: What do you do to help young people during transition from schools to College? A; We try to answer all the questions our potential students have. A great way for that to happen is to come into College to meet our current students as well as our staff. We invest a lot of time in easing students through the first few weeks of College life. Each student has a personal tutor who has special responsibility for a group of students.

Q; What about discipline and associated issues? A: We take discipline very seriously. We monitor attendance which can be checked via the Parents Portal. We expect deadlines for assignments to be met (although we can be flexible where there are special circumstances). Drugs and bullying undermine student achievement - we operate a zero tolerance approach to this for the safety of all our learners. Q: You are a very inclusive College and try to find something for everyone who applies; how can you have standards as high as a school sixth form? A: We offer a much wider range of courses across more levels compared to school sixth-form, so we are able to accommodate a wider range of student ability and interest. We put a lot of effort into making sure applicants are placed on a course that they will enjoy and will succeed in. We don’t just let anyone sign up for any course! This is in their best interest and ours and is part of the reason why we are a top London college.

Q; Schools sixth forms often offer a lot of enrichment activities. What about the College? A: At the start of each year we organise a Freshers’ Fair, much like universities, to introduce our new students to the opportunities on offer and we have staff who work exclusively on organising and developing the programme of enrichment activities.
