Dental Emergency Situations

Dental checkups are usually done by first getting in touch with the dental clinic to set up an appointment. A patient will then be given a time and day for his or her dental checkup, according to the appointment set. However, there are some situations that require the urgent attention of dentists, and may be outside of the dental clinic’s normal office hours. During dental emergency situations, a patient will need to be seen by the dentist in the soonest possible time, to be able to get longlasting pain relief and to prevent serious complications from various dental problems.

Dental Emergencies The following problems may require the urgent attention of a dentist, and can be classified as emergency dental situations:

Toothache – A toothache can be caused by several factors, and needs to be seen by a dentist immediately especially if extreme discomfort is felt by the patient. The aching tooth may be caused by trapped food, tooth decay, gum problems, or other reasons; regardless of the reason for the tooth pain, the dentist will be able to diagnose the problem and provide long-lasting pain relief.

Dental Abscess – A patient who has a dental abscess may experience a great amount of pain, and may not be able to do anything else while going through this uncomfortable episode. Emergency dental care is needed to be able to deal with this problem, which involves draining the abscess to prevent the further spread of infection. The dentist may also prescribe antibiotics and pain relievers to ease the patient’s discomfort.

Impacted Wisdom Tooth – An impacted tooth is one that does not grow out from under the gum line in a normal way, and instead pushes sideways towards the surrounding teeth. This sideways movement results in extreme pain, which can be magnified even more if the impacted tooth has become decayed. Emergency dental care involves draining the abscess if pus is present, and then a tooth extraction to remove the impacted tooth.

Lost Dental Crown or Dental Filling – A lost tooth filling or crown will need to be replaced immediately to prevent discomfort. The affected tooth will also need to be protected, especially since the cavity left by the lost tooth restoration is left exposed to germs and other infections.
