Reason why food tastes weird after brushing? Ever brush your teeth in the morning and rush to the breakfast table and gulp down that glass of orange juice only to find out the juice doesn’t taste anything like orange! It just tastes. BAD! While the toothpaste may give off a minty fresh flavor, and orange juice has a pleasant citric taste to it, however, if both are put together the result is somewhat downright disgusting! Ever wonder why is it so? Funny thing is, scientists haven’t properly been able to explain why this occurs. But they have been able to come up with one possible explanation. That`s the research by dentists in Diamond Bar CA. If you want to learn then there is many more useful information next in this post.

Toothpaste contains a substance called sodium laureth sulfate which is also known as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLES). It is the ingredient that causes most of the bitterness and ruins the taste of our drinks. The chemical is a wetting agent that causes to lower the surface tension of a liquid. This is added to toothpastes to allow foam to form and allow the paste to spread easily around the mouth. SLES meddles with our buds in two ways. The first being it suppresses the receptors on the taste buds that detect sweetness, inhibiting the ability for the buds to pick up on the sweetness being fed. Further, it breaks up the phospholipids on the tongue, means enhancing the part of the tongue that detects bitterness. So anything one would drink or eat after brushing would taste less sweet and bitterer than it normally would. Hence, if you’re very concerned about the bitter after-tastes you could opt to purchase SLES free toothpaste which might not make brushing fun, but, you’d be assured a scrumptious breakfast and normal tasting orange juice!
