In our focus on improving safety, the CPCA has advocated for sidewalks, crosswalks, street lighting, and more police coverage around Chastain Park. Also, since 2003, the CPCA has coordinated and funded, through your support, off-duty police security patrols in Chastain Park. While we are proud of that contribution and pleased to have such a robust membership, this year, only about 25% of our members have clearly expressed their support for us to continue funding security patrols through the use of off-duty police officers. If you want the CPCA to continue funding security patrols in the neighborhoods that surround Chastain Park, please let us know and encourage your neighbors to join the CPCA and specifically pledge money toward the security patrols. www.chastainpark.org/pledge

Andee’s Army Summer BBQ Festival Date: Saturday, June 20 Time: 12:00 Noon to 5:00pm Where: American Legion Post 140

The amount our members commit in funds/pledges is the main guiding factor we are using to determine the demand for security patrols among members of the CPCA. The current figures suggest the demand for security patrols is relatively low. The CPCA has considered several safety and security options to help deter crime and make our neighborhood safer. Please visit www.chastainpark.org for more information. You are also invited to join us at our Annual Meeting on June 1 (6:30pm) or email us at info@ChastainPark.org to share your thoughts. Your feedback is critical and will help guide us in how to best utilize our resources. You can visit the CPCA’s website now at the following link if you wish to make a pledge or contribution toward neighborhood security patrols. www.chastainpark.org/pledge Do you know a nearby business that would like to be a Chastain Park Neighborhood Supporter? If so, CPCA Business Partner Memberships are available for $200. Email info@ChastainPark.org for more information. You are also invited to join us at one of the CPCA’s upcoming communitybuilding events!

On Saturday, May 30, the CPCA will host “Picnic in the Park.” This neighbors’ night spring social is open to all Chastain neighbors. Admission is free for CPCA households. Non-members will be asked for a $5 donation. This family-friendly event will be held at the American Legion Post 140 (3905 Powers Ferry Rd.) on the south end of the park from 5 to 8pm. Bring your blankets and/or chairs and a picnic dinner or purchase from our Food Trucks. There will be good music, fun neighbors and more! Please R.S.V.P. at info@ChastainPark.org and type “PICNIC: your last name, and the number of people in your party” (e.g. Picnic: Smith-5) in the subject line. There is free, onsite parking and golf cart shuttles will be made available. Walking is also encouraged for those who are able.

Andee’s Army, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit that provides assistance to families of children and youth receiving medical treatment for acquired brain injuries and other neurological injuries, is cooking up plans for the first annual Andee’s Army Summer BBQ Festival at the American Legion Post 140 near Chastain Park on Saturday, June 20, 12 noon to 5pm. The BBQ cookoff will feature over 15 registered BBQ Teams who will be slow cooking their culinary creations up to a day in advance. The day of events will consist of two contests and awards by both local celebrity judges and a People’s Choice Awards.

“We anticipate that families and the community will embrace this summer kick-off event, our cause and enjoy some great barbecue. Attendees will have the opportunity to speak with competitors about their barbecue concoctions and have the chance to win a 50/50 raffle,” said Lisa Kennedy, a chair for the event. In addition to barbecue favorites, those in attendance can expect a lineup of live entertainment, additional food, non-alcoholic beverages, beer and wine for purchase, and a 50/50 raffle. An Andee’s Army invitational softball tournament will be hosted simultaneously by NYO at Chastain Park to round out a full day of family offerings. To buy a ticket, please visit http://www.andeesarmy.com/events.

Andee’s Army, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) organization, was formed in 2011 by a wide circle of friends and families of a local teenager named Andee who fell victim to an acquired brain injury, in the form of an extremely rare condition called Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM). The mission of Andee’s Army, Inc. is to provide financial assistance to families of children and youth who are receiving medical treatment and care for acquired brain and other neurological injuries, such as spinal cord injuries and Multiple Sclerosis injuries. Andee’s Army provides financial assistance for uninsured medical treatment, and related resources that are necessary for personal recovery and rehabilitation.

On Saturday, April 18, the CPC hosted its fourth annual Wine Event to raise additional funds needed to launch the groundbreaking for Walk Chastain. The evening’s festivities kicked off with a VIP tasting by Napa Valley wine maker Julie Johnson of Tres Sabores and hors d’oeuvres from Horseradish Grill. Family of the month By Abby Doerr

THE WADE FAMILY: Arts, Sports, And Music, Oh My! Meet the Wade family of Putnam Drive! The family loves sports, music, and the arts all the same! Steve and Carolyn, along with their two daughters, Casey (12) and Sydney (11), are always ready to take on a new adventure. The family (including their dog Georgia) loves spending time together and having fun! They enjoy spending time outdoors, cooking and relaxing with friends and

Steve’s 50th in Ireland.

relatives, and vacationing in Beavercreek, Colorado and Old Seagrove Beach. In fact, the family makes the journey from Atlanta to Beavercreek for a week every summer as a way to escape the scorching Georgia sun. This gives Steve and Carolyn a chance to revisit where they were married 15 years ago in a small Beavercreek chapel on the mountain. The wedding was attended by six family members and one wild fox. Following their wedding, Steve and Carolyn spent their honeymoon travelling through Spain enjoying all that it has to offer, including risking it all by running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. Carolyn was smart enough to sit that out and watch (and hope) that Steve could make it through the course unharmed.

by attending practices with Matt Adams at North Fulton Golf Course. While her sister Casey enjoys golf as well, she primarily devotes her time to the game of tennis by taking part in the Universal Tennis Academy at Chastain. The most fun part of tennis for her: trying to beat her grandfather, the most avid 82-yearold tennis player out there.

When they are not enjoying the cooler weather of Colorado you can find the family teeing it up and having some fun on the golf course. The entire family enjoys playing a good game of golf, however, it is Sydney who keeps up her game

Like her daughters, Carolyn enjoys outdoor activities like going on walks with Georgia and playing sports with her family, but she also enjoys spending her free time creating oil paintings and taking classes at the Chastain Art Center. She

has created many beautiful custom pieces, some of which have even been sold, but her favorite muse for paintings are her two daughters. Sydney also enjoys taking part in artistic activities, as she is interested in photography and spends her free time looking for the next picture to take. There is also a musician in the family! Steve is an avid musician and formed the band DC-9 with some of his work colleagues from Deloitte Consulting. The band has competed in the Fortune Magazine Battle of the Bands, a journey that allowed for them to play at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio! He says that even though some of his band mates have changed careers or companies, the band still enjoys getting together and playing some tunes for fun. What can you find this family doing in the fall? Cheering on the good ole Georgia Bulldogs of course! Though Steve earned his undergraduate degree from Emory and later attended Duke University Business School, and Carolyn received an undergraduate degree from Butler University in Indianapolis, the family bleeds red and black on football Saturdays. The family’s favorite part about living in Chastain Park, Carolyn says it’s the opportunities and fun activities that the family enjoys the most: “It is the location that affords an easy commute for Steve, fantastic school options for our children, art classes, sports, concerts, and quick access to all the shopping and activities.”

Will And Winston Meshad: Brothers Taking Over the Green! Winston Meshad, 16, and Will Meshad, 15, are the sons of Leslie and Matt Meshad. These brothers are taking the golf scene by storm and do not plan on slowing down anytime soon! Both are current players on the North Atlanta High School Varsity golf team, and have competed in various tournaments around the Southeast and are hoping to continue their competing far into the future. Beginning to play just five years ago, Will says one important thing he has learned thus far is the value of having confidence in yourself in order to play well. He looks up to the talents of Jimmy Walker and says his favorite mentor is Kevin Roman, a Junior Golf Coach at Cherokee Town and Country Club. Will has participated in Southeastern and American Junior Golf Tours, Georgia PGA and Hurricane Tour. He was the MVP of the Sutton Middle School Golf Team in 2014 and runner-up in the Middle School State Tournament. One of his favorite parts of playing golf is the opportunity it creates to meet different people from all over the country. He says his favorite moment of his time playing was his first win on a small tour a few years ago. Winston first began playing just three years ago, and has already placed second in the individual category in the 2014 State Tournament and was the Cherokee Country Club Junior Champion in 2013. He looks to Jordan Spieth for inspiration and says Kevin Roman is also his favorite mentor. Winston says his favorite part about playing golf is the opportunity it gives him to spend time and play with his friends. When asked about his favorite moment thus far he said, “I was lucky enough to play Augusta National last year!” Both boys agree that it is important for anybody looking to play a sport to stay focused and work hard toward your goal. The Meshad boys hope to continue to foster their passion for golf and continue their playing into their college careers and…

Generous Generation is an organization and kids club that collects money and donates it to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA). It is a companion to the Chastain Friends Club, which is for women. Generous Generation takes part in fundraisers at Tophat Soccer Club and NYO. The projects they take part in really seem to benefit the needs of CHOA. Many kids who live in Chastain Park help Generous Generation and the actions they take to help CHOA. One of these kids is Gabby McCaffrey. Gabby has been part of Generous Generation for four years now. She is in fourth grade at Warren T. Jackson Elementary School. Gabby enjoys Tophat Soccer and is a Girl Scout. I interviewed Gabby about Generous Generation. She says she enjoys being in Generous Generation because CHOA is a great cause. Gabby has participated in many fundraisers all around Chastain Park. One of Gabby’s favorite projects is making snack bags for CHOA that people can fill with candy and other snacks. “It makes me feel good to help others,” Gabby says.

One of the most important fundraisers that Generous Generation does is Change for Children’s. This is when the club sets up a table at Tophat and NYO. They convince people to donate money for CHOA by putting their money in baskets. If anyone sees a Generous Generation basket, it would be really helpful if you donated money. Change for Children’s is the biggest project that they take part in all year. The next most important project is the book drive. Like Change for Children’s, it takes part at NYO or Tophat. They have people donate books to CHOA so kids that are sick can feel happier. Then the kids in Generous Generation have a book sale where all proceeds go to CHOA. According to Gabby McCaffrey, “It is something that will make a long-lasting difference in the world.” Gabby says is it is also fun.

Annie And Bizzy - Meet The Crazy Chessies Annie and Bizzy are two 3-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retrievers that have made an unexpected mark on the Tuggle household. After having two perfect chessies in the past, Jonathan, Amber, and Will Tuggle began a search for a new pair that they could add to the family. Finding Annie and Bizzy in Sanford, NC, in the care of a breeder, the family brought the two pups home to Georgia. The Tuggles have been surprised by the difference in their first two pups and this rambunctious two, but say they are still holding out hope that one day Annie and Bizzy will live up to their predecessors. Annie is the free spirit of the two sisters. With a quirky side that really enjoys chasing any shadow she sees, she is sometimes deemed a little crazy. She is known to go after the shadows of glasses, butterflies and even leaves. Bizzy is the affectionate pup that will be sure to welcome any visitor with a nice lick. She also enjoys playing with her toys alone and has mastered a type of fetch that requires no assistance or partner. Being of the Chesapeake breed, both puppies love swimming in the ocean at the beach. This love for swimming sometimes pushes them to continue playing in the water long after they first began to feel tired. When they are not running around or having fun outside, the two can be found watching Braves baseball on TV or playing follow the leader with whoever is up and moving around. The Tuggles say this is their favorite thing about their dogs and love that it’s like a 24-hour parade in their house. What are the special talents of Annie and Bizzy? The two pups have mastered destroying even the indestructible stuffed toy in about 15 minutes!

The Cummings’ Home: A Brand-New 60-Year-Old Home Cia and Larry Cummings purchased a 1950s ranch-style house on North Broadland in 2013. They took their new home down to the studs, and, with the help of their team of Architect Ross Piper, builder Dave Donnelly, and good friend and interior designer Kerry Fuller of KVH Design, they moved into their brand new 60-year-old home in April 2014. Now Cia and Larry, along with their three children, Lily, who is 12, William, who is 10, and their 7-year-old Bennett call Chastain Park home. A lot of the original floor plan was kept but reconfigured to work for a family 60 years later with the overall design being inspired by a combination of three things. This is their fourth house in Atlanta, but the first that they have built. They thought about what they liked most about each of their previous homes and incorporated it into the plans. They also took into consideration how their family would live in each space. Cia is a realtor with Beacham & Company, so their design decisions were also dictated by how they affect resale value.

The family’s favorite room in the house is the family room. It is a cozy room with paneled walls and French doors that allow for a lot of natural light. They separated the kitchen intentionally in a way as not to totally isolate it but yet to allow them to enjoy hanging out with family and friends and still not look at the pile of dishes waiting to be cleaned. Larry grew up on Broadland Road and has fond memories of his time here. When they found a house that was quietly listed on the street, they jumped at the chance to buy it. Their kids play sports at NYO, and Larry has been a season ticket holder to the Chastain Park Amphitheater for 25 years, so to live in Chastain Park was an easy decision. They are a member of the Chastain Park Civic Association, and Cia is a member of the Chastain Friends Group, which have been great ways to meet new people and support great causes.

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is the only pediatric healthcare system in Georgia that has improved the lives of children by providing the special care they need – for 100 years.

Sponsor spotlight

Children’s heritage began in 1915 when an orthopaedic surgeon named Michael Hoke decided to donate services out of two rented cottages with 20 patient beds in Decatur, GA, establishing the Scottish Rite Convalescent Home for Crippled Children. The system’s humble beginnings also feature the establishment of Henrietta Egleston Hospital for Children in 1928, which pioneered programs in pediatric care; and Hughes Spalding Pavilion in 1952, which served African Americans and provided a training facility for African-American

Through the generosity and vision of many physicians, staff and community members, Children’s has grown to include three hospitals, 25 neighborhood locations, and the Marcus Autism Center. Children’s serves kids from all 159 counties in Georgia and has more than 877,000 patient visits each year. And reaches over 300,000 kids each year through the Strong4Life Childhood Obesity effort. Today, it is recognized as one of the top pediatric healthcare institutions in the country. While other healthcare facilities might offer a pediatric department, pediat-

Green Envy with

By Rena Sartain

My publisher, Ricky Richardson, called me to see how the article was coming for this June issue. “You have got to be kidding!” I said. “I haven’t had time to even think about writing. It’s planting season!” So, with a deadline of May 5, I sit down to pull my act together on May 4th. It won’t be a long article, but it will be heartfelt, as I have been inspired by what I have seen and heard this spring. I have heard the birds outside my bedroom window as I have my first cup of coffee… and the tree frogs, entertaining me at night as if they were performing a special symphony. I have witnessed a neighborhood cat deliver her kittens on my back patio. I have seen the first hummer of the season return to her favorite feeder. I have listened to the loud, noisy wren, who lives in my carport, wake me up every morning at the same time. I have watched the sourwood and beech trees finally put forth their leaves as the last arrivers to the party. I have watched Mother Nature claim control again. And it is glorious. But in the retail landscape world, which is my world, life is absolutely crazed in the spring. People come in droves to buy flowers, trees and shrubs for all sorts of projects, plans and designs. The parking lot is jammed, the lines to check out are five

deep, and the store is buzzing with everything from enthusiasm to impatience. Oh Lordy, have I seen it all this spring!

whatever. I just shake my head and chuckle, wishing they could have mirrors to watch themselves in action. Ooooohhh!!!

While I work in the most beautiful and nurturing of environments, surrounded by color and growing creatures, it is still retail. And very much a slice of everyday life in America. My customers represent all types of personalities, nationalities and creeds. It is a full spectrum of our society. Most people come in with stories of how wonderful their pots and beds we designed last year were. People are happy to be guided and assisted in any and every way. We laugh and joke and enjoy the beauty of our surroundings. They are anxious for new ideas and suggestions as their confidence builds with success. Novices and old-timers alike are grateful and gracious for the help of a knowledgeable staff. Most are uplifted by the overwhelming choices of color and variety to select from. Honestly, my job is a dream – most of the time.

And, of course, I wear thin, too! Dealing with a million personalities, reading minds to envision what someone needs and wants, educating, hand holding... I get tired, too. So in the midst of what has been a marvelous but exhausting season, I have the most wonderful story to share with my readers.

But then, there are the just plain grumpy, short-tempered or impatient. We see it everywhere. Somehow they missed the boat on good manners, raised by wolves. It never ceases to amaze me. Somebody is having a bad day or they are in a hurry, so it’s okay to be a butt. Blame me, take it out on me,

A couple of weeks ago, a woman came into the store with a very small but beautiful white orchid. The plant was in a pitiful little plastic pot. She told me that she couldn’t believe this plant was actually blooming. She wanted to replant it into a larger vessel. The woman shared with me that she had lost her 20-year-old son last year. When she finally found the strength and fortitude to go back to his apartment to clean things out, she found this orchid on a window sill. It was not blooming at the time. Her companions told her to toss it. But something kept her from doing so. She took the orchid home and put it in a window. She waited and waited, not being able to part with it because it had been her son’s. And now, finally, the orchid blooms.

31

She looks at me in tears. And, of course, it is clear. “How amazing it is that your son speaks to you through this plant,” I say. “It is one of God’s everyday miracles.” She cries, and I respond with a long hug and my own tears, rewarded that I have witnessed this precious moment. Mother Nature and the Powers That Be have once again gifted us with one of the small glories that we too often miss as we hurry through our day. In the midst of chaos and rush and living life, this particular occurrence will stay in my memory book. TO DO FOR JUNE: Take deep breaths. Laugh. Be a kid again. Run through your sprinkler. Live. And take naps if you can. Love. Hug like you never want to let go. (My daddy always said that to me.) Enjoy the moment. Saturate yourself in life. Have a wonderful summer.

Packing the “Perfect” Concert Basket! While brainstorming ideas for my June article, I knew I wanted to address something quintessential Chastain. Given the season, it seemed fitting to write about something to do with concerts in the park. One of my favorite parts of living in Chastain is the easy access to one of the most charming, intimate and memorable concert venues in Atlanta. The novelty of packing a picnic dinner, grabbing your favorite bottle of wine and enjoying a wonderful outdoor concert in your own neighborhood is pretty darn cool. In preparation for a concert, I always carefully consider what to include in our picnic basket. The first question is always whether we should order food or make it. Most of the time, we prepare our own dishes. I enjoy trying new recipes, and putting together a fun and portable menu. I always start with a meat and cheese platter, and then try to come up with items that are easily trans-

ported and, even more importantly, easily served. In keeping with that rule of thumb, one of my classic “go-to” menu items is a tray of hot Hawaiian Ham Roll Sliders with poppy seeds (also great for a tailgate!). These delicious and naughty treats are always a hit with a crowd. When creating your basket, consider your party, and let your creative juices flow. Think about items that can be passed around the table without issue and offer fast clean-up. Meatballs, mini-quiches, finger sandwiches, skewers (meat, veggie or fruit), cheese with arugula wrapped in prosciutto or roasted asparagus with a homemade dipping sauce are all terrific options. If you make a salad, using kale provides you with the option of dressing it ahead of time without running the risk of soggy greens. No matter what you decide to pack, make it a memorable night and don’t forget to pack dessert!

Hawaiian Ham Roll Sliders (Recipe adapted from www.justapinch.com) 2 packages of Hawaiian bread rolls About a 1.5 pounds of Boars Head Black Forest Ham (shaved) 1 package of sliced Swiss cheese 1/2 cup (or one stick) of butter, melted 1 Tablespoon of poppy seeds 1.5 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce 1.5 teaspoons of dijon mustard 1 tsp of onion powder

Slice off the top half of the rolls, and place the bottoms of the rolls in a baking dish. If you are taking these rolls somewhere portable, line the pan with foil and leave a flap to fold over the top for travel. Evenly layer ham and cheese on rolls. Replace tops. Combine butter, poppy seeds, mustard, Worcestershire, and onion powder over low heat on the stove and mix well until thoroughly heated. Drizzle the poppy seed mixture over the tops of the rolls. For best results (although not required), refrigerate until butter is firm or overnight. Cover with foil and bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until cheese melts. Uncover and cook for 2 additional minutes. Serve warm or cold. Enjoy! Although I try to pack my own basket, sometimes it is just not a realistic option. Ordering a pre-made, custom basket certainly makes a concert night even more convenient. There are numerous restaurants and catering services that do an amazing job assembling a wonderful concert basket at a reasonable cost. One of those restaurants is local Chastain favorite, Nancy G’s. Around the Table recently reached out to Nancy to discuss her concert basket options and asked if she would provide our readers with one of her favorite recipes from her concert baskets. Not only did Nancy send her recipe for her famous pimento cheese, but she generously offered our readers a coupon for 10% off the order of a purchase of any Chastain picnic and picnic bag. Thank you, Nancy G’s!

Nancy G’s Pimento Cheese ½ pound grated sharp cheddar cheese ½ pound grated sharp white cheddar cheese 3/4 cups of mayonnaise 1 tablespoon hot sauce 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce 3 grilled red pimientos ½ teaspoon garlic powder Kosher salt to taste 1/2 tablespoon smoked paprika

Combine all ingredients until thoroughly mixed. Be careful not to over process. Recipe makes about two quarts.

Chastain Friends hosted another successful Nine at Night Golf Tournament and fundraiser on May 2 to benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The weather was beautiful, and a perfect evening was enjoyed by neighbors who gathered to support this worthy cause. The evening was kicked off with putting and closest to the pin contests followed by dinner. Then golfers headed out with their glow-in-the-dark balls as the North Fulton Golf Course was lit up with tiki torches and glowing pins. Non-golfers danced to That ‘80s Band and bid on an array of items in the silent auction until the golfers returned to join in the fun. Thanks to everyone who made the event happen, including our sponsors, volunteers, and all of our guests!

celebrated its 19th annual Spring Gala on Saturday, April 11, at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead. The golf-themed benefit featured a sitting dinner, silent and live auction items, and dancing to the music of the American flyers, all to support the teachers at Holy Spirit Preparatory School. Through sponsorships, ticket sales, auction items, and donations, the Gala raised just over $200,000. The Gala support HSP’s faculty in two ways: proceeds are equally divided between the Teachers' Continuing Education Fund (TCEF) and the Teachers' Children Tuition Assistance Fund (TCTAF). HSP believes that the best faculty is a faculty given the opportunity to grow in their professional capacity; the TCEF allows HSP’s faculty and staff to continue as students themselves and grow each year professionally. The TCTAF provides additional tuition assistance for the children of our teachers. HSP is incredibly proud of the teachers we have invited to be a part of the HSP community, and we want to ensure that they and their families stay a part of the HSP community. A crucial part of that support can be reducing the burden of tuition on their families.

BEYOND CAMP

Better job growth should be good news for stocks. Instead, the reaction to February’s strong employment report was a spike in long-term interest rates and a drop in stock prices. An improving job market could make the Federal Reserve (Fed) less patient, but we believe slow wage growth and low inflation is likely to keep the Fed from rushing to hike short-term rates. Historically, stocks have increased both before and after the Fed started raising interest rates. But stock market volatility has usually increased too, making pullbacks more frequent.* Do you find daily market moves stressful, especially when prices move sharply? One strategy that can help you stay calm is to review your portfolio now to check if it's still aligned with your long-term financial goals, risk tolerance and current situation. We typically call this a portfolio review, but you may want to think of it as a "stress test" for your investments. And, of course, a good time for a portfolio review is when markets are relatively calm, not when they're rocky.

Despite the pullback in response to the employment report, the stock market is near record highs, supported by better economic growth and rising corporate earnings. In addition, Apple will join the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The economy has been passing regular stress tests, as the pace of growth picked up in the second half of last year to an average rate of 3.6%. That's well above its 2.2% average in the previous five years. Despite persistent worries about lagging job growth, hiring has picked up, too. Falling unemployment rate – The unemployment rate in February dropped from 5.7% to 5.5%, its lowest rate since mid-2008. Better-than-expected February job growth – The economy added 295,000 jobs last month, well above the expected gain of 235,000, according to Bloomberg. Improving job trends – Over the past three months, the economy has added an average of 288,000 jobs per month, up from an average of 266,000 over the past year. The nation's 31 largest banks recently passed the Fed's annual stress test, designed to indicate whether they could handle an adverse shock to the economy. And bank lending has increased over the past few months, suggesting that businesses are becoming more confident. Corporate earnings were up 6.7% in the fourth quarter of 2014, despite obstacles from the stronger dollar, lower oil prices, and slower economic growth in the rest of the world. We think earnings will continue to grow at a modest pace, supporting higher stock prices over time.

37

When Will Interest Rates Rise?

Despite many signs of an accelerating recovery, interest rates remain extraordinarily low. The Fed is patiently waiting for better wage growth and potentially higher inflation before raising short-term interest rates. Although no one knows when that will happen, we believe improving conditions make an increase very likely in the second half of 2015. Make sure your investments are positioned for rising interest rates.

Reducing Your Stress

Rising stocks are a great tonic for investors. And when markets are calm, it's easy to be disappointed that your portfolio isn't growing faster. Remember, though, that times change and diversified portfolios – by design – typically include investments that lag behind. While laggards may increase your stress today, they have the potential to help reduce it when conditions change. If you haven't reviewed your portfolio's mix of stocks, bonds, international investments and cash recently, you may need to return to the mix that's appropriate for you – also called rebalancing. And part of rebalancing may include adding lagging investments to your mix. A "stress test" and rebalancing can potentially reduce your portfolio's volatility – and your stress – in the future.

Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children in 1915

The leader in pediatric orthopedics today. A pioneer in 1915. One of the nation’s first pediatric orthopedic programs was founded in 1915 at Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children. A century later we’ve grown into Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Every day, we help kids overcome sports injuries like a torn ACL, and serious conditions like scoliosis. And we’re dedicated to making our next 100 years even better for Georgia’s kids. Learn more at choa.org/100years.
