History of samuel hanson house For more than half a century, Morgan County has been a convenient and stylish countryside retreat. Built c 1816, the Samuel Hanson House, in the classic Plain style period became the personal retreat for one of Atlanta’s leading interior designers, Toby West and his partner Tom Hayes. Located on a bend in Davis Academy Road, the old two-story house sits on a level building site with four front yard oaks evidently planted about a century ago for shade. Typical of the early Plain style plans from about 1810-1820, the house, built by Samuel Hanson, shows only a casual stab at symmetry, with a front door almost, but not quite centered on the five-bay façade. The vertical Plain style profile, with tall outside brick chimneys and shed additions front and rear, reinforce the impression of authenticity. Inside the floor plan is an early hall-and-parlor type, with stairs rising from the original shed room to the rear, but Greek Revival details imply an updated remodeling after the house was built, possibly in the late 1830’s or 1840’s. Once in an advanced state of dilapidation and being used for hay storage, the house was rescued in 1985 and the owner’s engaged Atlanta architect Norman D. Askins as their restoration consultant. The current owners have enlarged the rear sunroom, built a new barn for their horses, added a three car garage and done extensive landscaping
