Dedicated to bringing to life pivotal moments in Georgia history, the Cherokee Garden Library at Atlanta History Center has brought a new treasure this spring: a traveling exhibition focused on the contributions of John and William Bartram, early American explorers, naturalists, and artists that scouted the American colonies in the 1700s. The American Society of Botanical Artists’ traveling exhibition, coined Following in the Bartrams’ Footsteps: Contemporary Botanical Artists Explore the Bartrams’ Legacy, on display until June 17th, features world-class, contemporary botanical artwork of the plants discovered and introduced by William and his father, John, on their defining journeys. William’s ability to seamlessly transition from rugged back country culture to the refined, genteel plantations of the day made him the ideal man for the lengthy journey, much to his father’s delight. By becoming a cultural chameleon, William was able to discover more about local botany and culture harmoniously.

With his unruly son, William, in tow, the two set out on a journey that provided the Mother Land with invaluable information on the indigenous land, the ripple effects of which we can still feel today.

The result of the Bartrams’ four-year journey was William’s book, Travels through North and South Carolina, Georgia, East and West Florida, the Cherokee Country, the Extensive Territories of the Muscogulges, or Creek Confederacy, published in 1791. Since its publication, the text has been translated into numerous different languages, and has become a naturalist’s Bible of sorts for many.

The exhibition is currently on display in McElreath Hall at the Atlanta History Center. In addition to viewing the botanical artwork and holdings from the Cherokee Garden Library and Atlanta History Center collections, Bartrams’ flora featured in the Mary Howard Gilbert Memorial Quarry Garden allows visitors to experience the exhibition in a living, interactive element.

Deborah, along with her friend and business partner Suzanne Davidson, is the owner of Oli + Ve, a tasting shop for high-quality premium olive oils and vinegars, the first of its kind in the state of Georgia.The two women first opened the doors of their Roswell location on March 2, 2012, and have since opened two additional locations in Buckhead and Vinings due to the success of their Roswell shop.What started as a love and appreciation for fine quality olive oil and the desire to own a business focused on fellowship around a table with family and friends, grew into a full-fledged business plan.

“I had a lot of ideas over the years for wanting to start my own business, and they all centered around food,” Suzanne explained. “I love to cook and food was a big part of my role as a mother… having a mealtime where we all sat down together was important to me, both to provide a healthy meal and taking time together as a family.” When she was attending an out-of-town wedding and a friend pointed out a tasting shop for oils and vinegars, she knew she had found her calling. “I knew immediately this is what I wanted to do,” Suzanne matter-of-factly stated. When her older brother introduced Suzanne to Deborah, who was interested in opening a retail shop, she knew it was a natural fit. The concept of allowing patrons to sample their oils and vinegars before purchasing is not a novel concept in the United States, but it was in Georgia when Deborah and Suzanne first opened the doors of Oli + Ve. Despite the novelty, the community welcomed the concept, and business has flourished. Now, the stores attract a variety of customers, from foodies looking to spice up their recipes with gourmet olive oils, to on-the-go businesspeople looking for a quick

In addition to their featured oils and vinegars, the stores also carry pastas, soaps and lotions made from olive oil, wooden kitchen accessories, handmade pottery, flavored salts, rubs and blends, bread boards and dipping bowls. Melissa and I share a quick nervous-yet-enthusiastic look before digging into our tiny cups of ice cream.While the combination of sweet ice cream with savory olive oils

and balsamics sounds strange, the two of us understand Deborah’s choices instantly. Her choices are, in short, delicious: we try the vanilla ice cream with chocolate, raspberry, and strawberry baslamics, each one offering an unpredictably delicious assortment of

flavors. Perhaps my favorite combination of flavors was a small bite of chocolate brownie with Blood Orange Fused EVOO. As we left the store in a sugar-induced high, Melissa and I both agree that we had become EVOO converts during our first, and certainly not last visit to Oli + Ve. Helps Save one of Atlanta’s Historic Mansions by Diane Storey

Several magnificent mansions once lined Peachtree Road, designed by the most renowned architects of the day. But as time and progress marched forward, all but one of these stately homes were torn down and replaced with office buildings, condominiums, and general urban sprawl. Immortalized in Anne River Siddons’ Peachtree Road, the Randolph-Lucas Mansion stood alone.

Arthur and Margaret Lucas purchased the mansion in 1935. Mr. Lucas owned several Atlanta theatres including the Tenth Street Theater and the West End Theater. The couple lived there until Arthur’s death and Margaret remained until her death in 1987. This was the last time the house was used as a residence. FADED AND FORGOTTEN

A NEW BEGINNING Christopher Jones and Roger Smith, founders of New Town Partners, were chosen to restore the mansion to its original splendor. They also donated a preservation façade easement to the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, ensuring that the mansion would never be torn down.

A MAGNIFICENT MANSION The Randolph-Lucas Mansion was built by famed architect Phillip Thornton Marye, one of the most important architects in Atlanta and the South. Marye’s work included the historic Fox Theatre, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, the Atlanta, Birmingham and Mobile train terminals, and several residential estates. In 1924, Marye designed and built a grand estate for Hollins Nicholas Randolph, a great, great grandson of Thomas Jefferson and a prominent Atlanta attorney. The design was based on Randolph’s ancestral home “Dunlora” in Albemarle County, Virginia. The home was built on Peachtree Road between Muscogee Avenue and West Wesley Road. The Randolph family lived there for 10 years.

Faded and falling into disrepair, the mansion was finally slated for demolition in 1988. Fortunately, the City of Atlanta intervened in 1990 and designated it a Historic Building. In 1997, developer Blaine Kelly purchased the property to build high-rise condominiums. The Atlanta Preservation Center and The Peachtree Heights West Civic Association agreed to support the project as long as the mansion remained. The mansion was moved 35 feet forward and 30 feet to the South to make room for the new 2500 Peachtree condominiums and was used as a sales office until it was turned over to the condo association in 2003. A few years later, the condo association applied for a demolition permit. Once again the dilapidated mansion was slated for the wrecking ball. This time, Buckhead Heritage stepped in with a plan to relocate the mansion. They worked with the condo association and the City of Atlanta to make the relocation project a reality, offering the mansion free to anyone who could move and restore it.

Long time friend of the new owners, real estate agent Carolyn Calloway of Harry Norman, REALTORS® was instrumental in finding the mansion’s new home at 78 Peachtree Circle in Ansley Park. “From acquiring the lot to the numerous meetings with the City of Atlanta, house movers, utility companies and the Department of Transportation, this has been both a challenging and rewarding project for Roger and Christopher,” said Calloway. “They are passionate about moving this home to Ansley Park with other historically significant properties.” On Saturday, November 8th, the mansion made its historic journey down Peachtree Road to its new home. Hundreds of Atlantans lined Peachtree to watch the spectacle. Even though the Randolph-Lucas Mansion is at its forever home in Ansley Park, it will take time to restore the mansion to its original grandeur.
