written by Farren Davis If you’ve heard of Henri’s Bakery & Café but haven’t made it a point to experience this phenomenon for yourself, you are missing out on one of Atlanta’s most tasty traditions. Started in 1929 by French chef Henri Fiscus, Henri’s (pronounced On-REE’s) has been treating taste buds to an array of fresh, made-from-scratch baked goods for over 85 years. Originally located on 10th and Peachtree, there would be two more moves before Henri’s finally settled in its infamous current location on Irby Avenue in Buckhead Village.

Atlanta but anywhere. Over the years Henri’s has garnered international respect, attracting diverse crowds from around the world with its famed desserts and lunchtime favorites. The award-winning bakery has also caught the appetite of prominent celebrities including Ludacris, Michael Keaton, Julianne Hough, Ryan Seacrest, Cam Newton and Kate Hudson.

Now, Fiscus’ granddaughter Madeline Leonard has primary responsibility for running Henri’s, having inherited it in the early ‘70s while working as a flight attendant. Initially she tried to juggle both roles, working all-night turnaround flights and then heading to the bakery by dawn. Thankfully, it wasn’t long before she decided to focus all of her energy on continuing the extraordinary legacy her grandfather had started years ago. “He’s still an inspiration,” Madeline once explained. “Not a day goes by when I don’t think about him.

I love carrying on the baking tradition he started.”

As with any good eatery, there are notable menu items that keep people coming back for more. According to Madeline, some of the most popular choices these days include the chocolate éclair, their famous po’boy sandwiches and their almond macaroons. And for the usual gamut of special occasions, decorated petit fours and shortbread cookies continue to earn top billing. In addition, Henri’s handcrafts many specialty cakes for its customers, and most of the recipes were created by Henri himself. The café also features an espresso bar for coffee lovers, further solidifying its reputation as a standout compared to the recent cupcake-focused bakery trend.

That tradition encompasses some of the best pastries, breads, cakes, pies, sandwiches, salads and other deli delectables a bakery lover could hope for, not only in

target market would appreciate. “When Henri decided to serve sandwiches, Americans did not accept the hard crust European breads, so he created breads that are popular to all sandwich lovers,” Madeline explains. Above all, Chef Henri always emphasized excellent quality, which is a practice she and the rest of the shop have carefully maintained through the years.

But there is yet another reason Henri’s continues to enjoy the status of being an Atlanta mainstay – it offers a special nostalgia that affords people the chance to connect. Says Madeline, “When you visit us, it is more than a place to eat. It’s a ‘happening’ fun place where you might run into a high school friend that you haven’t seen in years.

You are both here for the fond memories of skipping school to go to Henri’s for your favorite sandwich.” In fact, Madeline gives much of the credit for the bakery’s lasting success to the folks who keep coming back. “We have fabulous customers who have made us what we are today! Thank you, Atlanta!” And with a second location in Sandy Springs, where patrons can expect the same great service and quality, Henri’s has expanded its ability to create even more fans.

as with many Southern traditions, Georgia’s art history is rooted in

making do with what’s around. As we look back over the past 85 years of art in Georgia, we see the handcrafted and the homegrown gain an appreciation far beyond the artwork’s humble beginnings.

In the early-to mid-1900s, Laura Pope Forrester filled her South Georgia garden with sculptures crafted from scrap metal and tin cans that she molded into concrete and dyed using a pigment concocted from flowers and berries. An original pamphlet for the now-defunct Mrs. Pope’s Museum and Garden boasts, “A world of history, Bible, fiction, and fantasy personified, sculptured from cement and sand, greets the visitors at Pope’s Museum on the oldest land lot in Pelham, Georgia.”

After filling her 1937 Vinings home with dolls and drawings, Nellie Mae Rowe turned her abode into a makeshift museum. She invited community members over to enjoy the sculptures she crafted from assorted found objects, such as chewing gum, old Christmas

ornaments and fake flowers. In 1976, the Atlanta History Center displayed her work in a traveling exhibit titled Missing Pieces: Georgia Folk Art 1770-1976. Art dealers noticed. Rowe was in her seventies when she became an internationally recognized artist.

Howard Finster, also included in Missing Pieces, honored Forrester and Rowe’s legacy by transforming his Summerville home into Paradise Gardens. The retired reverend made more than 44,000 works in his lifetime, fulfilling the spiritual vision he experienced at the age of 60 to “make sacred art.”

Though most of the works were biblical, the clergyman enjoyed pop culture and humorous images as well. His irreverent take on reverence soon turned Finster into a phenomenon with both critics and the public.

“He was able to connect rock ‘n’ roll, Pop art, self-taught art, and give people a voice,” states Jordan Poole, executive director of Paradise Garden Foundation.

In 1983, Finster won American hearts with his appearance on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight” show, where he played banjo and sang a few ditties. The next year he was selected for the 1984 Venice Biennale.

Rock bands such as The Talking Heads and Athens-based REM commissioned his work for album covers.

Finster used his renown to nurture the creative talents of others. Howard Finster Day, launched in Summerville in 1982, became known for spotlighting a wide variety of artists.

High Museum Ushered in World-Class Art That Finster and Rowe gained recognition during the mid‘70s was perhaps due to Georgia’s increasing legitimacy in the art world. Appointed as director of the High Museum of Art in 1963, Gudmund Vigtel catalyzed a regional awareness of contemporary art. Exhibits mounted in 1972 and 1975 featured modern works by artists of national import. It was the first time many Georgians laid their eyes upon sculptures by Claes Oldenburg and Eva Hesse, or Andy Warhol’s lithographs.

Major museums weren’t the only ones paying attention to art’s changing aesthetics. Nexus began in 1973 as a grassroots organization started by a handful of young artists working in Georgia. It soon expanded to include a publication branch specializing in experimental artists that would publish more than 150 books by national and international artists. Using offset printing and alternative binding methods, such as printing books that read like a scroll, these publications nodded to the artisanal quality of Georgia’s folk art history, while featuring subject matter that was decidedly forward-looking.

Nexus Press shuttered in 2003, but its gallery space lives on as Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, and its grassroots spirit continues to influence many of Atlanta’s current art organizations. There has recently been an arts renaissance in South Downtown, where galleries such as Eyedrum, The Mammal Gallery, Broad Street Visitors Center and Murmur Media now operate. This year the Goat Farm Arts Center piloted a program called BEACONS to regenerate the underserved area that was once Atlanta’s epicenter. The Goat Farm itself resides in a 19th-century former factory in the Westside Arts District, which experienced its own rebirth in the early ‘90s with the arrival of venues such as Saltworks, Sandler Hudson Gallery and King Plow Arts Center.

Georgia’s museums, once odd tourist attractions in folk’s backyards, have evolved into world-class institutions.

The High Museum recently instated its first Folk Art and Self-Taught Art curator to help preserve Georgia’s cultural legacy. The state’s self-taught, visionary and do-it-yourself customs will not become a relic, though; the continual emergence of small galleries ensures a place for experimental artists like Finster who cemented Georgia’s place in the art world.

Born in 1924 and raised in Hamilton, Georgia, guitarist and record producer Chet Atkins is best remembered for propelling the crossover of old-time country music to a softer, more popular country style in the ‘50s and ‘60s. This “Nashville sound” paved the way for today’s successful country music acts including Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland, Lady Antebellum and Zac Brown Band, all of whom also come from Georgia.

From the down-home strains of country and folk music to the soulful harmonies of jazz and blues, Georgia boasts a musical history so rich and diverse it’s difficult to encapsulate. Perusing all of Georgia’s true melodic talent could seemingly go on indefinitely, but the following artists and genres immediately come to mind when it comes to music in the Peach State.

IN THE BEGINNING

Georgia’s recorded music dates back to the days of Fiddlin’ John Carson, who was responsible for country music’s first songs on record in 1923. But it is Savannah native and songwriter John Mercer who put recorded southern music on the map. Mercer drew upon his Georgia upbringing as inspiration to write over 1,000 songs between the early ‘30s and mid ‘70s. In 1933, he penned Hoagy Carmichael’s “Lazy Bones” as a direct protest against those who he felt were artificial southern songwriters who had

Grammys and the first-ever ASCAP Heritage Award, it’s easy to see why country music wouldn’t be the same without Jackson’s landmark legacy.

GEORGIA SOUL

Some of the world’s most famed musicians were raised in Georgia, including dancing sensation and “Godfather of Soul” James Brown, who began performing in Macon nightclubs in the 1950s. Brown is known for his raw vocals and soulful, funky spin on ‘60s and ‘70s R&B music, with hits like “Out of Sight,” “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag,” and “I Got You (I Feel Good).”

Also dominating this era and hailing from Albany, Georgia was fellow pioneer of soul Ray Charles, whose blend of blues, gospel and jazz catapulted him into one of music’s most legendary figures. Charles, who would record multiple number-one pop hits, is best known for his 1960 signature piece, “Georgia on my Mind.” That old sweet song, written by Hoagy Carmichael, became Georgia’s official state song in 1979. Among his many accolades, in 1979 Ray Charles became the first performing artist to be inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.

ATHENS ROCK

Athens, Georgia has long been a producer of great rock talent – think The Black Crowes, Drive-By Truckers and The B-52’s.

But the popular rock band R.E.M, formed in Athens in 1980, developed a unique alternative/folk rock sound that

brought riveting melodies and passionate guitar sounds to the typically rugged rock world. R.E.M. is revered by fellow rock group Nirvana and many other respected acts as the pioneers of the genre. Since the late ‘80s, R.E.M. has enjoyed over 30 years of success with songs like “Losing My Religion” and “Man on the Moon”, which have made R.E.M. one of the best-selling musical acts of all time. R.E.M. was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

SOUTHERN RAP

While New York and Los Angeles initially controlled much of the commercial success of hip-hop, Atlanta found itself front and center on the urban music scene in the ‘90s. Much of the credit for that goes to East Point’s rap duo OutKast, whose members André “André 3000” Benjamin and Antwan “Big Boi” Patton ignited the hip-hop community with a unique, southern rap style that placed them at the pinnacle of the genre. Their biggest commercial success, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, featured the chart-topping single “Hey Ya!” that went certified Diamond, selling over 10 million copies in 2004.

The group recently reunited in 2014 and, to date, has won six Grammy Awards and sold over 25 million records.

How Architecture in Atlanta Moved from prefab to post-modern written by Grace Thornton Two major housing market booms in the past century influenced Atlanta’s architectural landscape. In 1937 the Federal Housing Administration began offering 30-year mortgages, making homeownership plausible for thousands of Americans. Following World War II, young soldiers took advantage of government-backed loans to buy homes that, by necessity, went up swiftly and efficiently. Ranch-style homes, a favorite of the post-war middle class, spread like wildfire.

Another simple design, the pitched-roof Cape Cod, also flourished. By 1952, the city of Atlanta had expanded from three square miles to 118 square miles. Increasing space and demand led to a dearth of these homes, which many Atlantans in Decatur, Gresham Park, East Atlanta Village and Brookhaven still occupy. on 1930s revival architecture, has changed the look of many Atlanta neighborhoods. Stately revival homes borrow architectural features from colonial, classical and old-world European styles. The designs were appealing to many in the South for the pillars, pediments and porticos that recalled the grandeur of architecture in antebellum Atlanta.

In the ‘60s and ‘70s, well-heeled Atlantans embraced the resurgence of 17th- and 18th-century Neoclassical architecture. These Georgian, Classical and Tudor designs have morphed into a new American style through multiple modernizations. Early constructions often faithfully recreated details, such as the arched Palladian windows of colonial structures or a Georgian home’s flattened columns. By the late 1980s, however, contractors customized revival designs by mixing anachronistic architectural features. Deemed “Neo-

eclectic” for their jumble of accents — and when assembled in a tasteless manner, the derogatory “McMansions” — this style has morphed from revival architecture into a standard of American homes over the past 40 years.

Atlanta homes plot a timeline of suburban growth since the Great Depression. The older neighborhoods, if not heavily renovated, are interspersed with 1930s Tudor or Colonial revivals amongst the modest ranch or Cape Cod styles that dominated mid-century home architecture. Once the postWWII housing boom subsided, builders shifted their focus to antique architectural themes. Metro area suburbs since the 1980s have relied on classic styles that lend gravitas to new constructions, turning traditional European designs into a uniquely American architecture.
