ART & DESIGN Swansea and Carmarthen
Wales UK
An art school experience in a contemporary university artanddesign@sm.uwtsd.ac.uk
www.uwtsd.ac.uk Foreword
As the new Dean of Art and Design at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) I have inherited a rich legacy of excellence in Art & Design education built up over many years by my predecessor Prof. Andrea Liggins and her team of outstanding academics on both the Swansea and Carmarthen campuses. Being the oldest art school in Wales means that the Faculty has seen many changes over the past 160 years. The recent merger of Swansea Metropolitan University with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David has established a new University with an amazing pedigree dating back to 1822. The Faculty has expanded its portfolio this year by welcoming the Schools of Industrial Design, Glass and Digital
Media into an expanded Art & Design family which includes the Schools of Fine Art & Photography, Film & Digital Media, Visual Communication, Design & Applied Arts. The Faculty has been further enhanced this year with the opening of the new ALEX Design Exchange. The Grade II listed building has seen a ÂŁ12 million redevelopment and will house a range of programmes and research groups including Product Design, Automotive Design and Architectural Glass Arts. ALEX will also house the Institute for Sustainable Design and the Cerebra Innovation Centre.
Dr Ian Walsh Dean of Art & Design UWTSD
The Faculty Swansea College of Art was founded In 1853 and has a distinguished tradition; described in Peter Lord’s The Visual Culture of Wales as ‘the most successful and prestigious art school in Wales’. Now as the Faculty of Art & Design at University of Wales TSD Swansea we are at the forefront of developments in creativity, enterprise and employment. We are small, friendly and informal with just over a thousand students in the Faculty. This means that the staff are more approachable and available to help, support and challenge you as well as there being ample studio space, and access to the most up to date equipment and facilities to allow you to thrive.
1
The Location Swansea is a seaside city sitting comfortably alongside a broad sandy sweep of bay. It is a great place to live and study: big enough to offer you the space you need; small enough to make you feel that you belong. There are all the amenities and cultural activities that you would expect to find in a modern, vibrant, University City – theatres, cinemas, excellent galleries, museums, restaurants, bars and great student nightlife. We also have an award-winning maritime quarter, a multi-million pound Waterfront Museum and the Wales National Swimming Pool. And what’s more, the cost of living here is very reasonable compared with most other university towns and cities. Just on our doorstep, beyond the Mumbles lies the Gower Peninsula, the UK’s first officially designated “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” and also great for surfing. Swansea has real people, real personality and is probably one of the most exciting cities in the UK to be in right now.
2
We are just 3 hours from London and 2.5 hours from Birmingham. We have excellent motorway (M4) and mainline railway links. Carmarthen is a thriving market town, nestled amongst the rolling hills of West Wales, and is seen as the gateway to the beautiful coastlines of Cardigan, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire. The oldest town in Wales, Carmarthen has a vibrant arts community and has easily accessible travel links to Swansea, Cardiff and beyond. Whether you choose to study in Swansea or Carmarthen there are bays and beaches, surfing and sailing, climbing and canoeing, swimming and cycling – it’s all here. With soaring limestone cliffs, small “smugglers’ coves”, castles and historic buildings and breathtaking stretches of long sandy beaches, the scenery is both spectacular and inspiring, and all on your doorstep.
And its history… Swansea was the birth place of Dylan Thomas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Actors Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins and Michael Sheen grew up near by. Swansea was also the first place ever to have a passenger railway and some of the earliest photographs were made in the Swansea bay area by Fox Talbot and friends. Carmarthen is steeped in myths and legends and is said to be the birth place of King Arthur. UWTSD is the third oldest University in England & Wales after Oxford and Cambridge.
The Courses
The Facilities
Our Students
All our programmes benefit from a team of highly qualified staff who are research active, are exhibiting both nationally and abroad and are often involved in projects with Industry.
We respect and celebrate our traditions. This is why we have retained traditional equipment and processes in the areas of ceramics, glass, printmaking, photography and industrial design.
Many of these staff have gained international reputations for their innovative research and creative practice. We have an excellent visiting guest lecturer programme with speakers of world class standing, for example, photographers Julian Germain, Richard Billingham, Martin Parr and Tom Hunter. Textile artists Alice Kettle and Shelley Goldsmith. Illustrators Simon James and Laura Carlin, Art Director for YCC Andy Peel and Director of Photography from Doctor Who, Mark Waters, to mention just a few.
But we are also forward looking, and the new complex is bristling with new technology. We are proud to have the latest Apple Mac digital equipment for all our programmes, and we also have specialist state-of-the-art equipment to meet the needs of individual programmes, from a water jet cutter, digital photographic and textile printers, laser cutters and digital ceramic print facilities; editing suites and video resources, including access to the latest Ultra HD RED camera and the latest 3D Printing technologies.
It is due largely to our students and our graduates over 160 years that we have built the reputation that we have. Many have gone on to distinguished careers in the arts, some have established multimillion pound design companies and then employed former graduates.
Industry professionals are employed to teach on specific modules allowing students excellent networking opportunities and feedback from those working in the field.
So, whether you choose to work with traditional processes or new technologies, or across both, we have it here for you. The creative possibilities are as exciting as they are enormous.
Other graduates are working for wellknown filmmakers and media producers, including the BBC and ITV. Our students are continually winning awards and are given the opportunity to exhibit throughout their courses. Graduate shows take place in Carmarthen, Swansea and London with students showcasing their work at prestigious design exhibitions in London. In year 3 all programmes include an ‘external project’. These projects have been operating successfully for many years and have often provided employment for students upon graduation. A wealth of professional projects provide so many further opportunities for students and graduates.

Rachel Harvard Dave Griffiths
BA (Hons) Advertising and Brand Design The BA (Hons) Advertising and Brand Design is all about studying to become a professional creative. Our projects encompass all kinds of media, from magazine to social media, radio to TV and from billboards to public events. It’s also about communication for business and enterprise. We liaise with businesses and look at real problems to solve from the very outset. Our ‘hands on’ projects include design for branding, creative art direction (working with photographers and video students among others), ‘pitching’ your concepts and ideas, marketing strategies and leading innovative new campaigns. This is what we are about.

We can’t promise you an easy ride, but all our ex-students say it’s been an enjoyable one – and they’ve ‘learned loads’. So, if you have been wondering what’s the best way for you to put your creative juices to work, this is the course for you. The course is spread over three years and is designed to enable you to get the skills you need step by step. Each year has two semesters and we offer you new building blocks in each one. It’s a journey of discovery and you can’t just sit back for the ride, you have to get involved. We believe that to understand things you have to experience them, not just talk about them, so almost 75% of the course is hands-on project work.

Graphic Design effectively and creatively integrates and manipulates words and imagery to inform, persuade and provoke responses in a huge variety of areas within the wider visual arena (e.g. books, posters, magazines, packaging, websites). The programme is concerned with the use of graphic design in publicity, advertising, information design and visual communications in general. Designing for both print and web are central to our studies.
“I have no doubt in my mind, that UWTSDSwansea helped me achieve my full potential as a Graphic Designer. The theory taught broadened my understanding of design. The work pushed my creativity in new, interesting ways. While the lecturers were both encouraging and insightful, going above and beyond to help when needed. If you’re considering a career in Graphic Design, I can recommend no where better.”

Illustration (Swansea)
Illustration is a dynamic and expansive visual language. Long celebrated as being a skill-based commercial discipline with areas such as book publishing, editorial and advertising in mind, recently illustration has expanded far more towards personal authorship, public realm, illustrative journalism and time-based, motion illustration.
The BA(Hons) Illustration course encourages its students to challenge the concept of what illustration can be, and to pursue personal directions in their work. In the spirit of this growing artform, this year’s graduate exhibition promises to showcase just that, with some truly original works in both established and innovative pathways in illustration.

Fine Art (Swansea)
The BA (Hons) Fine Art programme at Swansea encourages students to think laterally about their concerns and to explore the potential of various media. Once students have become skilled in a range of techniques and processes, they can choose which ones best suit their conceptual ideas. Armed with a range of practical skills, they are free to explore media and push their ideas to the limits and beyond. The emphasis is placed upon the relevance and significance of materials/ medium in relation to ideas and context. At Swansea we believe that there is no hierarchy of medium.
‘The Fine Art course provides students with the opportunity to grow creatively within a comfortable and nonjudgmental environment. During my three years on the course I have been encouraged to push boundaries in order to find the best possible way to express my thoughts and ideas. Industrial Design (Swansea)
Industrial Design is a creative activity whose aim is to produce the products, services or systems that we interact with every moment of our lives. Industrial designers are the individuals who make sense of our problems; they identify new ways of doing things, creating new possibilities in the form of tangible objects that enable us to live our lives the way we would like. From kettles to cars, from bottles to boats, the Industrial Designer’s role is to make the manufactured world around us fit – fit our bodies, fit our needs and fit our aspirations for the future!
The well equipped prototyping workshops and highly skilled technical staff offer students the scope to gain experience of working with wood, metal, plastics, glass, ceramics and automotive styling clay. Our advanced CAD studios are equipped with Wacom Cintiq workstations running the latest versions of industry-standard 3D design and visualisation software such as Autodesk AliasStudio, SketchBook Pro, Solidworks and Adobe Creative Suite. This is linked to a state of the art CAD/CAM and rapid prototyping facilities including 3D Systems, Z-Corp, Ultimaker, Fortus, Roland and Stratasys machines.
The origins of the Industrial Design School at Swansea can be traced back to 1887 when the School of Science and Art was opened in Alexandra Road. The School is an established provider of BA, BSc and Masters degrees in Product Design and is one of a select few institutions in the UK providing courses in Automotive Design. The new £14 million ALEX Design Exchange building has excellent facilities including dedicated design studios with personal workspaces and hi-speed Wi-Fi available for all students.
Our teaching team are all experienced designers who are either engaged in industrial practice through the work of the Institute for Sustainable Design and Cerebra Innovation Centre which are based within the School, or they are research active with peer reviewed publications in major conferences and journals. Visiting tutors who are practicing designers with their own studios compliment the core staff team.
This ensures that we meet the highest academic and professional standards and deliver qualifications and learning experiences relevant to industry. Most importantly our staff are friendly, accessible and supportive which, combined with our small class sizes, ensures that you get a high standard of tuition and support to kick-start your career in design.

“The first offer I got after graduating was to be a part of an exhibition at Ffotogallery in Cardiff, showcasing emerging artists in Wales. During my studies at UWTSD Swansea, I met a lot of good friends and as a group of students we helped each other out through critical discussions about our work. I am currently a second year MA student at the University of Gothenburg, but I still have contact with many of my Swansea friends professionally, as we have collaborative projects running and have exhibited together since university.” Pål Ekern, Graduate BA (Hons) 26

You will be challenged immediately with our thought experiment module, designed to open up your mind to the broad range of inter-disciplinary and multi-modal possibilities available to the creative practitioner. From that point on, you will be asked to consider forming contemporary dialogues and new discourses with whatever medium specific background you bring.
The module concludes with a Japanese - style pecha kucha presentation of your findings and process-based work. This module will set the tone for the rest of your study precipitating a spirit of enquiry that will take you through to the award. It is our intention that your studies here will take the form of an encounter at various levels: with your chosen medium; with Art & Design issues in general; and with the world as a whole. Questions of non-materiality will be addressed as well as questions of materiality. As soon as anything becomes recognisable we slip into habitual thinking. When we engage in an unfamiliar encounter, then we become inquisitive, we learn, and we build knowledge and confidence, as well as a more original voice.
