The space between the past and the future This project is based in the town of Bewdley in Worchestershire. The brief was to build a arts and crafts centre with an art gallery as the main space. I used the concept of ‘MA’ as a result of investigating the theme of the project which was IDENTITY. It had to understand what identity meant in the past, what it meant today and what it would mean in the future.

Top: Photographic images I took of what I believed are the main essence of Bewdley. The river, ropemaking, people and the forest.

Centre: Based on the writings of Mark Foster Gage I was trying to determine the identity of Bewdley. On the left is a building by the architect based on kitbashing and on the right is my com position of images related to Bewdley using the method of kitbashing.

Bottom: On the left is an image of the various cities around the world and the buildings that identified them. On the right we have buildings that look similar in the same countries showing how globalisation has impacted identity of cities aroiund the world.

These are images of concept models based on the elements I considered to be the essence of Bewdley. The geometrical motion of ropemaking, the fluid movement of the river and the layers on the bark of a tree which represent the layers of history and the change of the identity of Bewdley based on time and the people.

These sketches were based on the concept models and the ideologies based on the concept of ‘MA’. They were the the beginning of the final form I used for the building

LAYERS (FOREST) The concept of layers that come from the structure of a tree bark

FLUIDITY (RIVER) Fluidity represents the transport in Bewdley through the river as it was once considered the second busiest river in Europe at on time

TIME ( ROPEMAKING) Not only was ropemaking historically important but the motion of ropemaking can be seen mathematically through timelapse photography.

Combining the concept of layers with the idea based on the library in Seattle by OMA architects I was able to design a form that could represent the identity of Bewdley. I also look at the National Holocaust Museum as a reference for the space of MA. A central space in between that led a person through to the gallery with a certain concept.

DIGIFAB The aim of this project was to design a building for Birmingham City University as a digital fabrication and workshop for the school of arts and technology. The idea was to create not only a building that would serve as a fabrication centre but also for social interactions between students from all the different departments of the art and technology school.

The image above is a pie chart representing the how the students use the workshops. The shade part represents the use of the manual workshop while the the clear area represents the use of the digital workshops. Based on this I was able to split the building in two parts where the back of the building would be made using traditional methods while the front would use modern methods.

The image to top right shows the buldings surrounding the site which was the primary influence of the box shape I used. The building was then split into two based on the percentage shown on the pie chart and two different methods were applied where the back of the building was was contructed using traditional brick contruction while the front part of the building used clip on bricks to represent a modern type of building.

TOWNHOUSE The aim of this project was to design a townouse for a client of our choosing. The project which include groupwork for the Masterplanning was situated in the industrial egde of Digbeth. The clients I had chose for my project were a young artistic couple.

The project was initially a group project where we were divided into groups of twelve and had to come up with a layout of how our buildings would be placed next to each other. The option the group decided on was a radial fan like shape show in the image to the right with a site model made to show how the buildings would sit on the site and analise the design options based on the layout.

The initial idea was to have a staggered building based on the master planning which I took a step further and made the steps random. The random steps were then cut out at angles to symbolize the edgy nature of the surrounding area. But as I further looked into the area of Digbeth the evidence of the graffiti on the walls showed that people talked more about love and peace and used graffiti as a way to express their political views. This let to me giving the building a more smooth and rounded feel to it and kept some straight lines to symbolise the strength of the people.
