CULTURAL CENTER AS I HAVE TO DESIGN A CULTURAL CENTER AT MANDU AND THE WHOLE CITY IS BUILT ON ARCHES AS IT IS A HERITAGE CITY. SO I HAVE TAKEN ARCHES AS MY MAIN CONCEPT SO IT CAN REFLECT THE CULTURE OF MANDU. THE SITE WAS NEXT TO THE PALACE AND ON THE OTHER SIDE THERE IS A LAKE ,SO ITS GOOD TO GIVE ARCHES IN A ROW FROM WHICH ON CAN GET BEAUTIFUL VIEW TOWARDS THE LAKE.

STORY TELLING LIBRARY

OUR STUDIO WAS CONTEXIAL STUDIO AS OUR SITE WAS NEAR THE GANDHIASHRAM,WADAJ SLUM, AND RIVERFRONT. SO WE HAVE TO MAKE OUR OWN PROGRAM BASED ON THE SITE AND IT SHOULD BE USEFUL TO THE PEOPLE LIVING IN THE SLUM, AND ALSO THE VISITORS COMING AT THE GANDHIASHRAM. AS IT IS A HERITAGE PLACE MANY TOURISTS VISITS EVERYDAY. SO I HAVE CHOSE TO DESIGN A STORY TELLING LIBRARY ON THE SITE.




BASIC DESIGN THIS WAS A BASIC DESIGN EXERCISE IN WHICH TAKING THE THICK ACRYLIC SHEET AND BURNING IT,IT WAS MOULDED AND THROUGH WHICH DIFFRENT SHAPES WHERE FORMED AND THAN CONNECTING ONE ACRYLIC SHEET WITH THE OTHER DIFFERENT SPACES WERE FORMED. BY MELTING THE ACRYLIC THE CURVES WHICH FORMS ACTS AS VOIDS AND WALLS.


MEASURE DRAWING -SPITI VALLEY THE HOUSE UNDER OUR OBSERVATION WAS ONE OF THE OLDEST HOUSE IN KIBBER VILLAGE. IT WAS AROUND 50 YEARS OLD AND WAS OWNED BY AN OLD LADY. THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE HOUSE WAS DONE BY THEIR TRADITIONAL TECHNICAL OF RAMMED EARTH AND STONES. THOUGH THE HOUSE LOOKED LARGE AND BEAUTIFUL FROM OUTSIDE, IT WAS VERY DENSE AND DARK FROM INSIDE AS IT LACKED NATURAL LIGHT. ONE MIGHT FEEL CLAUSTROPHOBIC IN SOME PLACES OF THE HOUSE. THE OUTER WALLS OF THE HOUSE LOOK FINISHED ENOUGH AS COMPARED TO THE INNER WALLS. ONE VERY INTERESTING THING ABOUT OUR HOUSE WAS THAT IT HAD A CONTINUOUS RAMP ACROSS THE HOUSE.


THE HOUSE HAD A LOT OF DIFFERENT SPACES FOR VARIOUS PURPOSES SUCH AS STORING WINE, UTENSILS, WOOD, CATTLE SHELTERS, ETC. THERE WAS ALSO A SPACE WHICH WAS VERY IMPORTANT FOR WINTER SEASON AS IT WAS INSULATED. THIS SPACE WAS FILLED WITH NECESSARY FURNITURE AND HAD A RICH DAYLIGHT. THE CATTLE SHELTERS WERE VERY NICELY DIVIDED INTO 4 PARTS WHICH DEPICTS THAT THE RESIDENT MAY HAVE 4 DIFFERENT TYPES OF CATTLE’S. MOVING TOWARDS THE 1ST FLOOR, THE STAIRS WERE VERY UNCOMFORTABLE AS IT HAD VERY SHORT TREAD AND VERY SHORT HEADROOM. AS SOON AS WE REACH THE 1ST FLOOR, ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE THERE WAS A DRY TOILET SO, THERE WAS A LOT OF POOR SMELL AROUND IT. ON THE 1ST FLOOR THE RESIDENT HAD DEVELOPED A LARGE OF STORAGE SPACE FOR STORING CATTLE FOOD, UTENSILS, WOOD, CLOTHES, ETC. THE KITCHEN AND WASH SPACE WERE BESIDES EACH OTHER ON THE 1ST FLOOR. ALSO, OUR HOUSE HAD A VERY FEW DOORS, IT MOSTLY HAD CURTAIN OPENINGS. MOVING TOWARDS THE ROOF OF THE HOUSE, THERE WAS A WORSHIP SPACE. WHICH WAS USUALLY KEPT LOCKED.



MANDU MANDU IS A PLACE FOR HISTORICAL MONUMENTS.THE MONUMENT WHICH WAS ALLOTED TO US WAS HINDOLA MAHAL.IT WAS FOR THE QUEEN OF THE PALACIAL COMPLEX.HINDOLA MAHAL HAD TAPERED WALL.THE TAPERED WALL HAD SLOPE OF 70 DEGREE.IT HAD GROUND FLOOR+ ONE AND IT WAS IN T SHAPE. HINDOLA MAHAL WAS SUPPORTED BY ARCHES IN THE MIDDLE AND IT HAD NO ROOF AND WAS OPEN TO SKY.


EXISTING BUILDING AS I HAVE DONE REDESIGN ON HOUSE IV MADE BY PETER EISENMAN. AS HE USED TO WORKED ON GRIDS AND CUBES. IN REDESIGN I HAVE BREAK THE GRIDS AND JOIN THEM AT DIFFERENT ANGLES. FROM THIS I GOT DIFFERENT SPACES FOR DIFFERENT FUNTION.

FORMING SPACES AND VOLUMES WITH THE HELP OF L,C & J. IT ALSO GIVES AN IDEA OF LEVELS, AREA & HEIGHT.

PAINTINGS

EXPLORING DIFFERENT COLOURS WITH DIFFEERNT MEDIAM. ITS ALWAYS FUN TO PLAY WITH COLOURS AND MAKE AN ABSTRACT PAINTING.I WAS INSPIRED FROM THE FAMOUS PAINTER JACKSON PALLOCK & VINCENT VAN GOGH.

FOUR WOOD MEMBERS ARE JOINED INTO EACH OTHER ON THE HORIZONTAL METAL MEMBER AND ARE TIED UP BY SCREWS.

THE FOUNDATION IS STRENGTHENED BY J-BOLTS IN THE GROUND TIED UP WITH METAL MEMBERSABOVE THE GROUND, WHERE THE WOODEN MEMBERS WOULD BE FIXED ONTO.


A WOOD BATTERN IS INTRODUCED TO SUPPORT THE REPETITIVE MODULE IN A DIRECTION

THE TOP MEMBERS ARE GROOVED AND JOINED BY VERTICAL MEMBERS NY SCREWS
