khaad Semi-automatic Composting Device Team Project 15 sessions
Khaad helps turn food waste to compost conveniently and effectively. It is designed for nuclear families living in apartments with limited space. The simple form and neutral colour palette ensures that it blends seamlessly with the kitchen platform and fits well in a modular kitchen set up.
60%
40% Total organic waste in a city
Total organic waste in a city, only from homes
The urban Indian citizen generates nearly 700 grams of solid waste per person per day which is nearly 250 kg in a year. By segregating, recycling and composting, a family of 4 can reduce their waste from 1000 kg/year to less than 100 kg/year. More than half of what we carelessly throw into the trash is organic matter, which if composted, can produce rich top soil for our plants. However, when dumped in landfills, it releases methane which is 30 times more potent as a heat-trapping gas than carbon dioxide. (Sources: thehindu.com, swachhindia.ndtv.com, dailydump.org)

Task Flow/ Ideation
Khaad is a semi-automatic composting device. It is designed for modularity as it seamlessly blends with the kitchen platform. To speed up the process, the waste is shredded. It is automatically mixed twice a day for aeration and moisture level is monitored, to ensure efficient aerobic decomposition and prevent smell. The compost can thus be ready in just 21 days.

Must be pressed each time waste is added to shred it. Indicator: Days To Go
Tells the user when the compost can be collected (after every 21 days). Indicator: Moisture
Helps the user to maintain the ratio of greens and browns (30:70). It is very critical for healthy microbial activity. The plus sign indicates too much moisture and brown waste must be added. The minus sign indicates too little moisture green waste/water must be added.

a part chair Open Source Furniture 15 sessions
This project explores the world of open source products and digital fabrication technologies. It has a heavy emphasis on material exploration and manufacturing processes. A chair for young adults, living independently in temporary spaces. It would create a homely environment through comfort and a sense of ownership and belongingness.
User Study: Insights -
Time at home is spent to eat, sleep, relax and refresh, not work.
-
They do not spend too much on furniture since the space is temporary.
-
Shifting the furniture is very expensive.
-
Many are excited about personalizing the space.
-
The apartment is mostly shared.
-
Furniture includes only necessities.
-
The stay is temporary, for 1 - 4 years.
So what exactly makes a space homely? It is the comfort, the familiarity of the objects we use daily and our habits of engaging with them or simply its permanent nature.

Final Concept
A lounge chair made out of laser cut polypropylene, that uses objects from the surrounding environment to provide cushioning.” While shifting, the objects can be removed. The chair flattens and is refilled after shifting, with objects from the new surrounding. The idea is to make something comfortable and useful, but also affordable. To have something constant in changing “homes”.

indiegene Hand-crafted bag Collaborative Project with Artisans 15 sessions
The aim of this project was to create a hand crafted product by collaborating with craftsmen, highly experienced and skilled in wood carving craft. India has a rich heritage of crafts and a database of skill sets needed to work with a wide range of materials and techniques. It is a great opportunity for designers to collaborate with these skilled craftsmen.
The Craftsmen Ayub and Sameer, are originally from Saharanpur, the biggest location for the craft in India today. They have migrated to Mumbai and own a workshop in Mahim. Their products and skills have traditional roots. They are mainly involved in making furniture by order on a small scale.

Kolhapuri Chappal Everyday Footwear 10 sessions
This project, is an attempt to make a pair of everyday footwear, inspired by the form of the kolhapuri chappal. The kolhapuri cottage industry has been declining in recent times due to shutting down of leather tanneries and ban on slaughter of cows, bulls and bullocks leading to leather scarcity. Thus, these slippers explore more sustainable alternatives to leather while still utilizing the skill set of the craftsmen. They are completely hand stitched and use no toxic adhesives. Thus, they can be de-constructed for recycling.
