INTRODUCTION

BANTA BHAVAN

Nestled in the Kangra Valley, Garli is a Heritage Village notified by the Ministry of Tourism, HP. Garli is at a height of 500 Mts above sea level. With a population of about 2000 people, and its wondrous architecture. Heritage Village Garli is marvel in every sense. There is hardly any other Indian hamlet with such stunningly diverse styles of architecture on display amongst the mansions, temples and sarais. Garli is a classic example of collaborative town planning, vision & foresight of it’s founders. Established over a 100 years ago, many facets of a mini township were built in, ranging om educatio n, health, sanitation, commerce etc. Garli is at the epicentre of most of the popular sightseeing destinations in the Kangra Valley. One can enjoy staying here while visiting places upto 2 hours driving time. Garli has a huge bio diversity - om Cactus to Bamboos and many things in between. A nearby forest reserve offers possible sighting of wildlife like leopards, deer etc. ma stories, it is said that the village was for The name Garli bears many women so it is called garli, as in girls’. Some say, the village had many snakes, the snakes poison is called ‘garl’, so the name came as a village where poisonous snakes lived. The other story is that some king named it aſter his daughter. In olden days, Garli was known as the ‘Switzerland of India.’

A rectangular complex, it consists of a three storeyed rectangular structure oriented along the northwest direction. A linear building, its ground level consists oof a series of rooms with centrally located but individual staircases and a wooden colonnaded verandah in front. Spatially, the same pattern has been repeated on the upper levels also. An abandoned single storey structure opposite the main building block exists, with a cantilevered terrace accessible by a staircase located along the southeastern part of the main block. The central linear court in between the two blocks is partly brick paved. The rear portion has a mud structure, totally collapsed and in ruins and surrounded with oovergrown vegetation. Externally, the façades are symmetric in nature. The court facing facades at the ground level has a verandah with timber columns with stone bases and the second level consists of a brick paved terrace with cast iron railings forming the parapet while the intermediate first floor level is completely a wooden façade with windows. The exterior street facing and rear facades are of exposed brickwork with lime stuccowork around windows at the second floor level. The entire structure is topped with a two-way sloping slate tile roof with concrete latticework gables. Extremely ornate wooden doorways along with wooden brackets and fascias at all levels, the decorative floral lime stucco work along the window openings on the exterior brick façades and brackets along the second floor level, the concrete latticework in gables and the geometric patterns of the concrete jaali work in terrace parapets, all enhance the architectural character of the building tremendously.
