MEN’S BASKETBALL 2019-20 HIGHLIGHTS
• The University of Hartford men’s basketball team continued its successful run in 2019-20 under head coach John Gallagher. For the third time in as many years, the Hawks won at least 18 games, coming one victory shy of matching the program’s Division I record of 19, set in 2017-18. • For the first time since transitioning to Division I in 1984-85, Hartford has posted three straight winning seasons after going 18-15 in 2019-20. In addition, the Hawks, who finished in the top-four of the America East standings in each of the past three years, advanced to the championship game of the America East Playoffs for the first time since 2008. • Finishing as one of the top defensive teams in the America East, the Hawks ranked first in the conference — and No. 2 in the nation — in three-point field goal percentage after holding opponents to a program-best .275 clip from behind the arc. Hartford also led the America East in steals per game (7.30) and three-point field goal field goal percentage (.341). • In addition to the team’s successes, several individual milestones were reached in 2018-19. Malik Ellison, Traci Carter, Moses Flowers and Hunter Marks each earned All-Conference distinction from the America East. • Becoming just the second player in program history to earn National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I All-District 1 honors, graduate transfer Ellison also became the third player in as many seasons to receive America East All-Conference First Team distinction. He enjoyed one of the most decorated seasons in recent history, closing out the year averaging 18.7 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. • Leading the America East and finishing No. 6 in the nation in steals, graduate transfer Carter took home America East All-Conference Third Team and All-Defensive Team honors. The guard rewrote Hartford’s record books, breaking the program’s single-game records in steals (9) and assists (13), while also shattering the single-season records in both categories with 83 thefts and 163 helpers. • Flowers, who became Hartford’s first All-Rookie Team selection since 2012, enjoyed an impressive freshman campaign that featured a league-high four America East Rookie of the Week honors. He scored the fourth-most points (342) among all rookies in program history, while also finishing fourth in three-point field gols made (56) and field goals (119). • Rounding out the All-Conference honorees was Marks, who earned a spot on the league’s AllAcademic Team. One of three players to average double figures with a career-high 10.4 points per game, the sophomore holds a 3.73 GPA as an entrepreneurial studies major. • The Hawks continue to excel in the classroom as well, as they finished the Fall 2019 semester with a 3.14 GPA. Highlighting the team’s academic performances were seniors Nikola Colovic and Petr Stepanyants, and Marks, who each earned perfect 4.0 GPAs last semester. • Colovic and Stepanyants became the first players in Hartford’s Division I history to contribute to three consecutive winning seasons, combining for 55 victories in that three-year stretch.
