NEED TO KNOW GAME DAY NOTES
BY THE #’S
2
Two Hawks have recorded doubledoubles in 2020-21: Austin Williams vs. CCSU and Hunter Marks vs. Fairfield.
.556
Williams, a senior guard, has been on fire in the early part of the season, shooting a blistering 55.6% from the field (20-of-36).
1
Hartford — which finished as the America East’s leader in steals per game in 2019-20 — is again first in the league with 8.00 per game.
NOTES TO KNOW SETTING THE SCENE
Hartford rides a three-game winning streak into the start of America East play, which has adapted an unusual schedule this season due to COVID-19. The Hawks’ league slate — which features back-to-back dates against the same opponent at the same location — tips off Saturday when Maine visits the Reich Family Pavilion.
CLEAN SWEEP
Last week, senior guard Austin Williams and freshman forward Thomas Webley swept the America East’s weekly awards when they were named the league’s Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively. It marked the first time in 15 years that the Hawks took home both awards in the same week. The last two Hartford players to accomplish the feat were Kenny Adeleke (’06) and Joe Zeglinski (’11) on Dec. 5, 2005.
MID-MAJOR DOMINANCE
Hartford faced some tough competition to open the 2020-21 campaign, going up against a pair of high-major opponents in UConn and then-ranked #12 Villanova. After falling in those games, the Hawks rebounded and handed three losses to Connecticut mid-major teams, taking down Fairfield on the road before defeating CCSU and Fairfield in their home debut.

FEATURED HAWK TRACI CARTER
Traci Carter is a second-year graduate student who joined the Hawks in 2019-20 after stints at Marquette and La Salle. A Philadelphia native, he was a workhorse in his first season at Hartford. Shattering both the single-game program records in assists (13 vs. Maine) and steals (9 at UAlbany), Carter took down the Hawks’ single-season record in steals, set by Michael Turner in 2007-08, after coming away with 83 thefts last year.

ALUMNI FEATURE WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
MICHAEL TURNER BY THE #’S
21
Recording 838 points and 545 rebounds in his career from 2006-09, Turner is one of 21 members of Hartford’s 500/500 Club.
4.3
Hartford’s first-ever America East All-Defensive Team selection in 2008, Turner’s 4.3 defensive rebounds per game rank fourth all-time.
1
Turner was the first player in program history to finish a season with 200 points, 150 boards, 100 assists and 50 steals in 2007-08.
Then-Hartford assistant coach John Gallagher enticed Michael Turner to make the 3,000-mile trek from Novato, Calif., to West Hartford, Conn. Looking back more than 15 years later Turner describes his time at Hartford as one of the most eye-opening experiences that allowed him to create some of the best memories and relationships of his life. After a standout career at Marin Catholic High, Turner spent a season at West Valley College in Saratoga, Calif., before making the cross-country journey to join the Hawks. In three seasons, the 6-foot-4 swingman saw his scoring average rise from 5.7 points per game to 8.9 as a junior and 11.2 in the 2008-09 season. Quick to become a “fan favorite” among Hartford’s faithful followers, Turner’s career was highlighted by several “firsts” for Hartford. He became the first player in program history
14 HARTFORD HAWKS // #FLYHIGH
ALUMNI FEATURE to lead the team in both rebounds and assists in the same season, and was the first Hawk to be named to the America East All-Defensive Team. Most importantly, Turner helped lay the foundation for Hartford men’s basketball, leading the program to its first-ever trip to the America East Championship Game, in 2008. There’s no doubt that Turner left his mark at Hartford. To this day, his name is peppered throughout the Hawks’ record book, as he ranks among the program’s all-time leaders in steals, three-point field goal percentage, rebounds and minutes. His journey didn’t end in West Hartford, though. After graduating, Turner embarked on a professional career in Germany, where he enjoyed a two-year career with the Nordlingen Giants. After living out his childhood dream of playing professional basketball, Turner landed in New Orleans for a few years before reuniting with high school coach Rick Winter on the West Coast. For the past 10 years, he has worked under Winter at North Bay Basketball Academy, where he is currently the Associate Director and Director of Player Development. Jeff Dooley, the voice of the Hartford Hawks, had a chance to catch up with the former men’s basketball standout. To hear more about Turner’s journey, and his time as a Hartford Hawk, check out the interview below.
