TONIGHT’S MATCH

Fresh off its first America East victory of the season, Hartford returns home to Al-Marzook Field to conclude its non-conference slate against Yale on Tuesday.

INSIDE THE SERIES

Yale leads the all-time series, 13-82. The sides haven’t met since 2017, when Yale claimed a 1-0 victory in New Haven, Conn. Hartford’s last series victory came in 2016, on AlMarzook Field, ending a seven-game drought against the Bulldogs that dated back to 1999.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

After a 2-1 start to the season, Yale has gone 1-3-1 in its past five outings. Paolo Carroll leads the Bulldogs with four goals this season, while Kahveh Zahiroleslam and Eric Lagos each have three. Elian Haddock is the only goalkeeper to see time for Yale, notching 32 saves with a 1.34 GAA and two shutouts. The Bulldogs, who

went 13-3-2 and won the Ivy League title during their last season, in 2019, were picked to repeat as league champion in this year’s Ivy Preseason Men’s Soccer Poll.

LAST TIME THEY MET

Yale won, 1-0, at home on Sept. 6, 2017. John Leisman scored just before halftime and the Bulldogs held on the rest of the way. Hartford goalkeeper Jimmy Slayton finished with three saves in the losing effort.

LAST TIME OUT

Hartford defeated Stony Brook, 3-1, for its first America East victory of the season on Saturday. The Hawks led 3-0 on the strength of goals from Olivier Sylvain, Tomer Drimmer and Demario Cameron and nearly earned a shutout, before Stony Brook got on the scoreboard in the game’s closing minutes.

WEEKLY AWARDS

A pair of Hawks received a weekly award from the America East on

4 HARTFORD HAWKS // #FLYHIGH

Monday after leading the Hawks to a 2-0 mark last week. Sophomore Rotem Fadida was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week, while Sylvain, a midfielder, recieved Rookie of the Week distinction. Earning two wins for Hartford in goal — including a shutout victory against the Big Green — Fadida took home his second career weekly honor after making saves on nine of the 10 shots he faced. Sylvain earned his first career award from the league after putting Hartford on the board at Stony Brook with his first career goal in the 42nd minute of action.

NEXT ON TAP

The Hawks will head into the heart of their conference schedule, hosting UAlbany on Saturday at 7 p.m. Hartford holds a 10-9-3 edge in the alltime series.

POITRAS Entering his 11th season at the helm of the Hartford men’s soccer team in 2021, Tom Poitras has helped establish the Hawks as a perennial power in the America East Conference since his arrival, in 2011. Backed by 27 years of head coaching experience that features a career record of 268182-73, the 45th-best career win percentage among all active NCAA Division I men’s soccer coaches, Poitras has proven to be a success everywhere he has coached, and Hartford is no exception. Since taking over at the helm of the Hawks, Poitras has amassed a record of 77-79-34, making him the second-winningest coach in the program’s 37-year Division I history. In addition, he has piloted Hartford to the title match of the America East Tournament five times, with the most recent coming in an historic 2019 campaign. During the unprecedented 2020-21 season, which was played in the 2021 spring season due to COVID-19, the Hawks posted a 3-3-1 record against America East foes. Landing six All-Conference honorees — including a pair of First Team selections — Hartford came up short to New Hampshire, the eventual America East Champion, in the semifinals of the conference tournament. The 2019 campaign was one for the books for Poitras and his Hawks, who advanced to the America East Championship Game for the fifth time under his watch before falling to New Hampshire. Hartford posted the nation’s top single-season turnaround that season, posting the second-best winning percentage (.667) and the second-most victories under Poitras after finishing with a 12-5-4 overall record. It was an 11-win improvement from the previous season. Poitras’ defense posted 10 shutouts in 2019, the second-most in Hartford’s Division I history behind his 2013 squad, which shut out a program-best 11 opponents. In addition, with a shutout percentage of .476, Hartford ranked 17th in the nation in the category. Another significant mark in program history was also reached in 2019, when the Hawks strung together an 11-game unbeaten streak for the best stretch of games without a loss since Hartford became a Division I team in 1984. Poitras’ coaching philosophy — one that puts emphasis on defense and teamwork — has played a major role in the program’s success. In 2013, the Hawks shut out 11

12

opponents, the most in the program’s Division I history, while holding opponents to a school-record goals-against average of 0.81, which was the 32nd-best mark in the nation.

During his first four years, he piloted the Hawks to the title match of the America East Championship three times. In just two years, he turned a five-win team into a squad that posted back-to-back double-digit win seasons in 2013 and 2014 for the first time in 15 years. During that stretch, Poitras led the 2013 squad to 13 wins and a.714 winning percentage, both of which are the secondbest marks in Hartford’s Division I history. A key milestone for both Poitras and the Hartford men’s soccer program was reached in 2013 when Damion Lowe, a three-year defender, became the first Hawk in 17 years to get drafted by a Major League Soccer squad. Lowe was drafted eighth overall by the Seattle Sounders, marking the second-highest pick among all of Hartford’s 17 Division I sports. During Poitras’ coaching career, more than 20 of his players have gone on to play professionally. Poitras’ success has translated from the pitch into the classroom, where Hartford has thrived academically. Since his arrival, the Hawks have landed 23 America East All-Academic Team members, including a program-record four in both 2013 and 2014. The Hawks have also produced a pair of America East Elite 18 honorees, an honor that recognizes the student-athlete with the highest GPA among all participants in the America East Championship Game, as Jake Slomski and Jimmy Slayton have earned the distinction in 2016 and 2019, respectively. Under Poitras, the men’s soccer team was in the front of the pack in the classroom in 2021, leading Hartford’s men’s squads with a 3.53 GPA during the spring semester. Most impressively, 85 percent of last year’s roster — a total of 23 student-athletes — received America East Academic Honor Roll distinction after posting a GPA of 3.0 or better that semester. Prior to arriving at Hartford, Poitras was the head coach at the University of Wisconsin-

Green Bay, where he piloted the Phoenix to four Horizon League Championship Game appearances in seven seasons. Most impressively, Poitras guided UW-Green Bay to an historic 2009 season that saw the program earn its first-ever Horizon League Championship and NCAA Division I Tournament appearance, the team’s first in 26 years. Before UW-Green Bay, Poitras spent six years at Southern New Hampshire where he amassed a record of 81-25-16, which included four NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and five seasons with 10-plus victories. In 2002, Poitras took the Penmen to the NCAA Division II Championship Game and was named the NSCAA New England Region Coach of the Year. Poitras’ coaching career began with a four-year stint at the University of New Haven, where he orchestrated one of the nation’s top single-season turnarounds, lifting the Chargers to back-to-back 10-win seasons after inheriting a squad that posted just five victories prior to his arrival. Selected as the New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year in 1996, Poitras culminated a 15-6-1 mark in the 1997 season. Poitras played collegiate soccer at Southern Connecticut State from 1987-91, serving as a four-year starter for the Owls while leading the team to a Division II National Championship in 1987. After graduating from Southern Connecticut in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in recreation and leisure studies, he went on the play two seasons at the professional level with the Connecticut Wolves of the Interregional Soccer League. Poitras holds his USSF ‘A’ coaching license and USSF National Youth License while recently receiving an NSCAA Premier Diploma. He currently works as a US Soccer Developmental Academy Scout and has served as an Olympic Development staff coach both in Region I and Region II. Additionally, he was a USSF Coaches Licensing Program Associate Director in Connecticut. Poitras and his wife, Alison, reside in Southington, Conn. with their children, Ian and Ella.
