SERIES PREVIEW
The Hartford baseball team looks to punch its ticket to the 2022 America East Playoffs during its regular-season finale against Maine this weekend. First pitch on Thursday from Fiondella Field is set for 3 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Kevin Koziol and Tremayne Cobb Jr. paced the Hartford baseball team’s offense with three RBI each to lead the Hawks past Merrimack, 8-5, in their non-conference finale at Dunkin’ Donuts Park on Tuesday. Koziol went 3-for-4 at the plate, finishing with three RBI. Julien Giroux-Harvey (1-1) got the start and picked up the win after allowing one unearned run off three hits, striking out four batters. James Judenis picked up his first save of the season after pitching the final inning.
SENIOR DAY
Prior to Saturday’s game, the Hawks will honor seven members of the Hartford baseball team in a special Senior Day Ceremony. Hartford will honor graduate students Ben Maycock, Kevin Koziol and Julien Giroux-Harvey, as well as seniors Will Nowak, Devin Kellogg, Tim Blaisdell, and Donnie Cohoon.
SCOUTING MAINE
The Black Bears, who have already clinched the No. 1 Seed in the conference tournament, are looking to win the regular season championship this weekend. Maine sports a 27-17 record overall and a 21-6 mark in conference play and are coming off an 18-7 victory at Boston College on Tuesday. The Black Bears are led by the duo of Jordan Schulefand and Quinn

McDaniel. The pair top the team in batting average, .348 and .326 respectively, while combining for 113 hits, 94 runs, 65 RBI and 12 homeruns. Joe Bramanti is the main power threat, hitting 14 homeruns and 60 RBI on the year. Caleb Ley’s is Maine’s ace, leading the pitching staff with a 3.28 ERA and a .227 batting average, while tossing 64 strikeouts in 60.1 innings. Matthew Pushard is the team’s closer, leading the conference with 12 saves.
TREYMANE HITS DINGERS
INSIDE THE SERIES
NEXT ON TAP
Maine swept Hartford in a threegame series earlier this season. Overall, the Black Bears hold a 101-47 edge in the all-time series. In games played in West Hartford, Maine holds a 19-15 edge all-time.
Cobb Jr. has been a power machine in recent games, as his past four hits have all been homeruns. The junior hit three round trippers last weekend against UMass Lowell, before hitting one against Merrimack on Tuesday. This season, Cobb Jr. is sixth in the league with nine homeruns and tops the team with 43 RBI. The power numbers are a significant increase from 2021, where he hit only three homeruns and tallied 20 RBI. If the Hawks qualify, they will head to Orono, Maine for the America East Championships. The tournament runs from Wednesday, May 28, through Saturday, May 28.

MALINOWSKI Steve Malinowski was named head coach of the Hartford baseball team in the summer of 2021. He enters his 11th season on the Hawks’ coaching staff, as he was previously an assistant coach for the past 10 years. He serves as the Hawks’ primary hitting coach, while also working with the team’s catchers. Malinowski was a key piece to Hartford’s historic season in 2018, helping lead the Hawks to the program’s first ever America East Regular Season and Tournament Championship, as well as making their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Hartford swept the America East Major award in 2018, including senior Nick Campana, who was named America East Player of the year. Campana was the team’s top hitter, thanks in large part to Malinowski, last season, batting .385 with 10 home runs and 39 RBI. Under Malinowski’s watch, Hartford has rewritten its offensive record books. The Hawks’ top five single-season hits records have been set since 2012 and the team proved dominant in 2016. That year the Hawks batted .302 as a club, the second-highest percentage in program history behind only the 1997 squad (.311). Hartford also set a handful of program records in 2016, including hits (559), runs (379), RBIs (332), doubles (103), triples (22) walks (235) and total bases (805). Hartford’s hitters have thrived with Malinowski’s guidance. Former first baseman David MacKinnon set the single-season hits record (85) in 2016 and broke the career hits record in 2017, finishing with 269 during his time at Hartford. Former catcher Erik Ostberg also flourished under Malinowski, getting selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 13th round of the 2017 MLB Draft, after one season as the Hawks’ full-time starter.

In that role, he helped the Huskies to their most successful seasons under head coach Jim Penders, including a program-best 48 victories in 2010 and back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths in 2010 and 2011. The 2011 Huskies advanced to the NCAA Super Regional’s for the first time in program history. Prior to his tenure at UConn, Malinowski spent one season as an assistant at Bryant University. Malinowski also served as an assistant coach with the Pittsfield Dukes in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) in 2008, while in 2009, he was an assistant with the Manchester Silkworms. A native of Kensington, Conn., Malinowski graduated from UConn with a degree in coaching and administration in 2007.
