EARLY IMPACT Friday evening against Stonehill marked the collegiate debut for seven studentathletes looking to make an impact for Hartford. Andrea Buzas, Lindsey Metcalfe, and McCarthy each earned the start for their first games as a Hawk, while Kellsie Flint, Lila Doyle, Rebecca Opdenbrouw and Tara Martin made appearances off the bench in the contest.

NEXT ON TAP Hartford takes to the road for the first time in 2022 on Thursday for a midweek match-up against St. Francis Brooklyn. Kickoff between the Hawks and Terriers is set for 3 p.m. from Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The Hawks are back in action this weekend when they host Lafayette in a Sunday matinée. Kickoff from Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium is slated for 12 PM.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT Lafayette was picked to finish eigth in the Patriot League Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Leopards opened up their 2022 campaign on Thursday in a 3-0 loss against Quinnipiac at home. Melissa Lamanna highlights the key returners for Lafayette, netting a team-high five goals last season. Gretchen Waechter has turned into a mainstay on the backline for the Leopards after ranking second on her team with nine points as a freshman last season. Netminder Natalie Neumann led the Leopards in the net posting 1.50 goals against average, five wins and one shutout.

LAST TIME OUT Hartford picked up its first win on the campaign after defeating Stonehill Friday evening, 2-1. Jenkins got the offense going for Hartford in the 22nd minute, converting on a feed from Victoria Jedrycchowski to open up the scoring. After a brilliant assist from Ishani Sharma in the 58th minute, Jenkins would net her second goal of the game to extend the Hawks lead to 2-0. Goalkeeper Abigail McCarthy came up big inside the net, allowing one goal while making nine saves to earn her first career win in her collegiate debut.

Hartford owns a 3-0-1 advantage in the all-time series against Lafayette. In four meetings, the Hawks have held the Leopards offense to one goal. Last time the two teams met was on Sept. 5, 2021 where the Hawks walked away victorious in an overtime thriller 2-1. During the match, two late goals from Imani Jenkins propeled Hartford to the victory.

Natale’s track record of success extends well beyond the collegiate level to the international level. Away from the Hawks’ campus in West Hartford, he has been actively involved in a pair of FIFA Women’s World Cups and two of the past four Olympic games in London, England (2012) and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2016).

Natale, who became the program’s fifth head coach in 2004, has established himself as one of the elite coaches in the America East, and in the Northeast region. Leading Hartford to at least a share of the America East Regular-Season Championship in four of his past six years, Hartford’s dominance in the America East and in the region has been unmatched as of late under Natale.

The winningest coach in Hartford women’s soccer history with 155 career victories, John Natale enters his 19th season as head coach of the Hawks in 2022. A fivetime America East Coach of the Year, Natale has piloted the Hawks to an NCAA Championship appearance, an America East Championship and five America East Regular-Season Championships during his impressive career at Hartford.
