TODAY’S MATCH-UP

The Hartford softball team continues its 2022 campaign on Wednesday with a single game against in-state opponent Fairfield. First pitch from the Hartford softball field is set for 2:30 p.m.

THE HIDDEN OPPONENT

Today’s mental health awareness game is hosted by the Hidden Opponent, an accredited nonprofit advocacy group that raises awareness for student-athlete mental health awareness and addresses the stigma within sports culture. They empower athletes around the world to face this hidden opponent together. Julianna Kocenski of the Hartford softball team is the President of the chapter here at the University of Hartford.

11-10 edge in games played in West Hartford. The two teams last met on April 28, 2019 at Fairfield as the Hawks dropped a single game against the Stags, 4-0. Despite the losing record, Hartford was victorious in the first six meetings between the teams, spanning from 1986 to 1990.

SCOUTING FAIRFIELD

Picked to finish second in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s Preseason Coaches’ Poll, Fairfield enters the midweek contest with a 5-12 record. The Stags dropped their previous game against Stony Brook at the Rutgers University Tournament, 5-1, on March 19. Fairfields ace, Bailey Taylor, leads the pitching staff with 12 appearances, two complete games, 36.2 innings pitched and 22 strikeouts. Haley Updegraff is the Stags’ main threat at the plate, leading the team with a INSIDE THE SERIES Fairfield holds a 27-20-1 advantage in .340 batting average, .638 slugging percentage, 16 hits, and six doubles. the all-time series against Hartford. strongest run producer, driving home 11 RBI to lead the team.

IN THE CIRCLE

The Hawks pitching staff of Julianna Kocenski, Caylee English, and Lauren Card have been posting career numbers to this point of the season. Kocenski who has led the Hartford pitching staff each of the last three seasons, is posting a career high 1.76 ERA thus far. English has more than doubled her innings pithed career high total of now 26.0 and is still growing as the season continues. Card has appeared in seven games so far this season and struck out four opposing batters, both career high marks.

LAST TIME OUT

On March 18, Hartford took on Manhattan in a doubleheader to make its 2022 home debut. The Hawks split the doubleheader against the Jaspers, winning game

one, 6-3, and dropping game two, 3-2. Freshmen standouts Samantha Ganaden and Olivia Wolk continued their strong rookie campaigns in the match-up. Wolk drove home two of the teams six runs, while Ganaden went two-for-four at the plate, lacing two doubles in game one. Caylee English earned the win after entering the game in the fifth inning in relief. English was able to stifle the Jaspers offense, allowing no runs to cross the plate and setting down two batters on strikes over 3.0 inning of work.

NEXT ON TAP

The Hawks return to the diamond this weekend to compete in a round robin tournament against Maine and Quinnipiac. First pitch from the Quinnipiac Softball Field is set for 9:30 a.m. against the Black Bears of Maine.

DUDEK

Mairin Dudek enters her first season as the head coach of the University of Hartford softball team. Before arriving at the University of Hartford, Dudek most recently spent time as an Assistant Coach with Amherst College from 2020-2021. Prior to her time at Amherst, she served as the second head softball coach for the American International Colleges 43-year-old softball program. In her time with AIC, she coached 38 NFCA Academic AllAmericans, 11 NE10 All-Conference players, the 2018 NE10 Defensive Player of the Year Alexa DiLeo, and both 2013 and 2018 All-Conference selections. Before her tenure at AIC, Dudek was an assistant coach at UAlbany. In 2011, she was recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) as the Northeast Regions Coaching Staff of the Year. Dudek began her coaching career as the head coach at Wheelock College in 2005, before being named Assistant Director of Athletics and head softball coach at Fisher College. Dudek was a four-year member and two-year captain of the Ithaca College softball team, where she helped lead the Bombers to four consecutive NCAA Division III Championship appearances from 1999-2002. Dudek recorded the gamewinning hit for the 2002 national title and was named to both the 2001 and 2002 Northeast Regional All-Tournament teams.
