2010-11 season preview SPRINTS The Hawks return a deep group in the sprints, including veterans Anderson Emerole and Warren Lane. A four-time All-New England honoree, Emerole will be the Hawk to catch on the track as he makes his return as the top runner in the 200 and 400. After putting down three school records last season, Emerole enjoyed all-conference honors, taking third in the 400. Pushing Emerole in the 400 will be Lane, the most experienced sprinter on the squad who is ready to step up and have substantial success in the conference championships. In addition, Emerole and Lane reunite with senior Chris Carr on the 4x4 team, a squad that saw great success taking sixth at New Englands while putting down the indoor and outdoor school records. Sophomore Ackeme Brown will look to build upon a successful freshman campaign in the 100 while Rashawn Providence, a freshman, should provide an immediate impact in the sprint group. With the addition of Providence to the 4x1, the foursome should be able to rewrite the Hawks’ records books in the relays while finishing high in the conference. 2009-10 campaign. Eric Quitzau, a newcomer who brings a Massachusetts high school championship in the 110-meter hurdles to the corps, should provide an immediate impact in the hurdles.

DISTANCE/MID-DISTANCE Andrew Chalmers and Jonas Hampton provide a strong distance contingent for the Hawks. Fresh off successful cross country seasons, the duo will look to carry that success over into the track season. Hampton, a senior, takes the track for the final time after proving to be a strong competitor on the course this fall. The school record holder in the 5,000 and 10,000, he will be a threat in those distances at the big meets. Chalmers had a breakthrough cross country season where he led the Hawks in five meets and now will return to the track, where he has already proven to be a force. Junior Eric Flaman saw major strides during the fall season and will add depth for the long races. With the graduation of Mike DuPaul, who rewrote the program’s record book in the mid-distance events, Josh Hummel, a senior, will look to fill the void in the races. Kevin Brandon, John Busque, Bobby Giuliani and Wayne Lawrence are coming off strong cross country campaigns and will provide depth for the distance and mid-distance corps.

THROWS

wa’s personal best throws rank among the top marks of the conference performance lists. Cholewa will provide the most upside to Hartford throwing in several years as he looks to challenge the current discus and hammer school records while breakthrough at the America East meet this year as a team point scorer. Anthony Green, a junior, will provide depth in the throws as he has already proven to be one of the Hawks’ top performers in the shot put. Green holds the school record in the event. The Hawks also welcome back Ryan Adams and Matthew Swartz, a pair of talented sophomores who will be in the mix for points and will look to contend for school records.

JUMPS Although the members of the jumping team are young, the squad is loaded with potential in its returners and the incoming class. In the long jump, sophomore Ackeme Brown will look to make an impact while classmate Chasani Douglas will look to place in the triple jump at the championship. Douglas will be joined by Rashawn Providence and Josh Ugwuneri, a pair of rookies, in the quest for points in the triple jump at the conference competitions.

The throwing events will be at its strongest under the leadership of its returners combined with a strong group of new faces. In his first year of collegiate competition, Kyle Cholewa should be ready to make headway in 2010-11. A sophomore, Chole-

WALTER HARRISON UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT G

rowth, vitality, and service to the community are key attributes of Walter Harrison’s first 10 years as president of the University of Hartford. Since his appointment as the University of Hartford’s fifth president in 1998, the University has experienced a period of energy and momentum unmatched in its history. President Harrison has overseen dramatic improvements in academic quality, finances, and

During President Harrison’s tenure, the University has undertaken a vigorous and comprehensive building campaign. Many of the University’s residence halls have been renovated, and Hawk Hall, the University’s new five-story, 208-bed residence for first-year students, was completed during the summer of 2007. The ovalshaped Alumni Plaza, constructed out of concrete of various colors and finishes, now provides students with a large gathering spot on the residential side of campus.

At the heart of this construction campaign are three major new additions to the University’s signature academic programs: The Renée Samuels Center of the Hartford Art School (opened in January 2007), the Integrated Science, Engineering, and Technology Complex (opened in 2005), and the Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center (opened in September 2008), which houses the Dance and Theatre divisions of The Hartt School. public schools. It is the only private university in the country with two public magnet schools on campus—the University of Hartford Magnet School and the University High School of Science and Engineering. President Harrison’s community involvement is extensive. He serves on the boards of directors of the Connecticut Conference of Independent Colleges and the Hartford Consortium of Higher Education. He is currently the president of the board of the Hartford Stage Company. He serves as trustee or director of a number of other Hartford-area organizations, including the Greater Hartford Arts Council, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, the Connecticut Science Center, and Suffield Academy. He is also a director of WorldBusiness Capital, an international finance firm based in Hartford. Reflecting his longtime interest in intercollegiate athletics, President Harrison chairs the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Committee on Academic Performance, the group charged with implementing academic reforms among the nation’s leading intercollegiate athletic programs, and serves on a number of other NCAA committees. He is the immediate past chair of the NCAA Executive Committee. He also serves on the Presidential Advisory Committee of the Association of Governing Boards. All this is a long way from President Harrison’s beginnings as a scholar of American literature and culture. A native of Pittsburgh, he graduated from Trinity College in Hartford in 1968, then earned a master’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1969. After an interim of three years to serve as a captain in the

United States Air Force, President Harrison earned a doctorate from the University of California–Davis. His doctoral dissertation, “Out of Play: Baseball Fiction from Pulp to Art,” was one of the earliest scholarly treatments of baseball and its place in American life. In 1982 President Harrison left full-time teaching to take an administrative position at Colorado College. He joined Gehrung Associates University Relations Counselors in 1985, becoming president of the firm shortly thereafter. In 1989 President Harrison moved to the University of Michigan, where he became vice president of university relations and secretary of the university. President Harrison and his wife, Dianne, a scholar of 19th-century Victorian literature and mystery literature, make their home in Russell House, the president’s residence at the University of Hartford.

A four-time NBA All-Star, he averaged 15.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in 791 career games. Baker was picked eighth overall in the June 1993 NBA draft. At the time he was the highest draft pick ever from a Connecticut college or university. In his 16 years with the Astros he hit .297 with 449 home runs and 1,529 runs batted in. He ranks among Houston’s career leaders in batting average, slugging percentage, home runs and RBI. He was the 1994 National League MVP, 1991 Rookie of the Year, and was a four-time All-Star (1994, 1996, 1997, 1999).

The philosophy we endorse as part of the Hartford Hawks strength and conditioning program is quite simple. We are seeking the best gains, in the least amount of time, in the safest way possible. All training sessions are supervised by the strength and conditioning staff to augment results and reduce any chance for injury. We endorse a variety of modalities, and forms of training, and are constantly looking to improve the program to make it more efficient. As a student-athlete your time will be limited due to class schedule, practice time, travel, homework, eating, sleeping, and hopefully some form of a social life.

OF HARTFORD CONDITIONING The voluntary training cards provided are basic routines that follow similar protocols you will experience on campus. However, we have simplified them to meet the equipment you most likely will have available to utilize during the summer training period. When you come to campus you will be exposed to the full effects and direction of the strength and conditioning program. All student-athletes at the University of Hartford will experience mental, and physical, challenges that will push them well beyond what each individual thought was possible. Ultimately, the student-athlete is responsible for their success or failure. We as coaches are here to provide a training plan, and guide you.

Following the rules behind the strength and conditioning program will help you achieve the top five reasons for training. The training methods we endorse may be unorthodox, but they will assure we are both overloading and being progressive with all training protocols. The strength and conditioning routines at the University of Hartford are brief and intense out of necessity. Once again, our goal remains to maximize training in the least amount of time. Make the commitment to your team. Have laser-focus on goals. Get locked in. This unrelenting approach will make the difference in all phases of training.
