2010-11 season preview DISTANCE/MID-DISTANCE Freshman Megan Barry will take the track for the first time after proving to be a strong competitor this fall, leading the Hawks in each cross country meet. Marisa Poleto added longer distances to her resume as she just wrapped-up her first cross country season at Hartford where she was a consistent topthree finisher for the Hawks. Adding depth to the squad for the long races will be Jennifer Flores, also a rookie, and returner Kayla Koonz. With the graduation of Ariana Bass and Melanie Wilson, the Hawks will need to rebuild the middle distance squad to form a strong dominant contingent in the events. In her final season, Nicole Dow will look to leave her mark in the Hartford record book while several new faces will have the opportunity to make an immediate impact.

Championship and earned All-New England honors with her third place finish in the event at New England’s. In addition, Appiagyei should excel in the 200-meter event this season and will be a valuable point earner for the Hawks. With sophomore Nicole McClintock and seniors Nicole Dow and Marissa Poleto added to the mix of sprinters, the scarlet and white return a solid core for the 4x400-meter relays and will look to rewrite Hartford’s record book in the event. The senior duo of Dow and Poleto will also add depth and experience to the 400 and 800-meter events. In the short sprints, Kenterra Richardson, a junior, will provide a solid backbone in the 55 and 100-meter events and will be expected to earn points at the America East and New England Championships.

SPRINTS

THROWS

The Hartford coaching staff is looking forward to the luxury of depth and a strong core of returners in the sprints this season highlighted by sophomore Priscilla Appiagyei. As a rookie, Appiagyei racked up the accolades as she erased the 400-meter program record with her fourth place performance at the America E a s t

The Hawks have a solid group of throwers led by sophomore Brittney Lawson who should be ready to contend in the hammer and weight in the America East after posting successful marks during her rookie campaign. After rewriting the Hawks’ record book in the weight, hammer and shot put (outdoor), Lawson will look to breakthrough as a team point scorer and improve upon her program-best distances. Also returning is Catie Nyitray who will compete in the shot put and hammer, as well as Carolyn Grime who will provide depth. Alisha Beeman, a rookie, has potential to erase the Hawks’ javelin school record and become a threat in the conference in the event.

JUMPS

NICOLE DOW

Although the members of the jumping team are young, the squad is loaded with potential in its returners and incoming class. Nicolle Adams returns as the Hawks’ top horizontal jumper. The junior put down the program record

in the long jump and has made strides during the offseason in preparation for the upcoming year. Nicole Stanko, a freshman, headlines the list of newcomers. Stanko should be able to make an impact on the squad and will be expected to place at the America East Championship in the long jump while classmate Alisha Beeman should contend in the high jump. In the pole vault, Caitlin Hauswirth, a junior, has already proven to be the best in Hartford history.

MULTIS Junior Nicolle Adams will lead the young, but talented, group of multievent athletes. Adams will be looking to break into the scoring places at the America East meet in the pentathlon. Joining Adams is Alisha Beeman and Shaneen Datts, who both look to have bright futures. Beeman grabbed third place honors in the heptathlon at the Connecticut state championships and should emerge as a threat in the conference. Datts will concentrate on jumps and hurdles but will be a solid back-up and pointearner in the multi-events.

Now in its fourth decade of operation, America East has evolved into one of the most comprehensive NCAA Division I conferences with a commitment to broad-based, competitive athletics programs, complementing the academic integrity and missions of the member institutions.

Progressive in its approach to its more than 3,400 studentathletes, America East recognizes champions in each of its 20 sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. America East also conducts the nation’s most comprehensive academic recognition program for student-athletes.

• Vermont captured its sixth straight America East Academic Cup in 2010 after its student-athletes registered a cumulative 3.19 grade-point average, which was the best mark in the award’s 15-year history. New Hampshire recorded a 3.16 GPA and also eclipsed the former standard, while five other schools earned a 3.0 GPA or better. • America East’s 3,400 student-athletes registered a combined 3.05 GPA during the 2009-10 academic year and over 60 percent of them were named to America East’s Academic Honor Roll for recording GPA’s of 3.0 or better. • Seven student-athletes were tabbed ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans during the 200910 season, the league’s most since the 2005-06 academic year. WALTER HARRISON UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT G

rowth, vitality, and service to the community are key attributes of Walter Harrison’s first 10 years as president of the University of Hartford. Since his appointment as the University of Hartford’s fifth president in 1998, the University has experienced a period of energy and momentum unmatched in its history. President Harrison has overseen dramatic improvements in academic quality, finances, and

During President Harrison’s tenure, the University has undertaken a vigorous and comprehensive building campaign. Many of the University’s residence halls have been renovated, and Hawk Hall, the University’s new five-story, 208-bed residence for first-year students, was completed during the summer of 2007. The ovalshaped Alumni Plaza, constructed out of concrete of various colors and finishes, now provides students with a large gathering spot on the residential side of campus.

At the heart of this construction campaign are three major new additions to the University’s signature academic programs: The Renée Samuels Center of the Hartford Art School (opened in January 2007), the Integrated Science, Engineering, and Technology Complex (opened in 2005), and the Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center (opened in September 2008), which houses the Dance and Theatre divisions of The Hartt School. public schools. It is the only private university in the country with two public magnet schools on campus—the University of Hartford Magnet School and the University High School of Science and Engineering. President Harrison’s community involvement is extensive. He serves on the boards of directors of the Connecticut Conference of Independent Colleges and the Hartford Consortium of Higher Education. He is currently the president of the board of the Hartford Stage Company. He serves as trustee or director of a number of other Hartford-area organizations, including the Greater Hartford Arts Council, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, the Connecticut Science Center, and Suffield Academy. He is also a director of WorldBusiness Capital, an international finance firm based in Hartford. Reflecting his longtime interest in intercollegiate athletics, President Harrison chairs the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Committee on Academic Performance, the group charged with implementing academic reforms among the nation’s leading intercollegiate athletic programs, and serves on a number of other NCAA committees. He is the immediate past chair of the NCAA Executive Committee. He also serves on the Presidential Advisory Committee of the Association of Governing Boards. All this is a long way from President Harrison’s beginnings as a scholar of American literature and culture. A native of Pittsburgh, he graduated from Trinity College in Hartford in 1968, then earned a master’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1969. After an interim of three years to serve as a captain in the

United States Air Force, President Harrison earned a doctorate from the University of California–Davis. His doctoral dissertation, “Out of Play: Baseball Fiction from Pulp to Art,” was one of the earliest scholarly treatments of baseball and its place in American life. In 1982 President Harrison left full-time teaching to take an administrative position at Colorado College. He joined Gehrung Associates University Relations Counselors in 1985, becoming president of the firm shortly thereafter. In 1989 President Harrison moved to the University of Michigan, where he became vice president of university relations and secretary of the university. President Harrison and his wife, Dianne, a scholar of 19th-century Victorian literature and mystery literature, make their home in Russell House, the president’s residence at the University of Hartford.

UNIVERSITY O STRENGTH and C m o r f d r A w on d C o n d i t i o n i n g a . . h . t r g e n s e u r o t S o ac h D a v e H C

The philosophy we endorse as part of the Hartford Hawks strength and conditioning program is quite simple. We are seeking the best gains, in the least amount of time, in the safest way possible. All training sessions are supervised by the strength and conditioning staff to augment results and reduce any chance for injury. We endorse a variety of modalities, and forms of training, and are constantly looking to improve the program to make it more efficient. As a student-athlete your time will be limited due to class schedule, practice time, travel, homework, eating, sleeping, and hopefully some form of a social life.

36

hartford hawks women’s cross country

& track and field

OF HARTFORD CONDITIONING The voluntary training cards provided are basic routines that follow similar protocols you will experience on campus. However, we have simplified them to meet the equipment you most likely will have available to utilize during the summer training period. When you come to campus you will be exposed to the full effects and direction of the strength and conditioning program. All student-athletes at the University of Hartford will experience mental, and physical, challenges that will push them well beyond what each individual thought was possible. Ultimately, the student-athlete is responsible for their success or failure. We as coaches are here to provide a training plan, and guide you.

Following the rules behind the strength and conditioning program will help you achieve the top five reasons for training. The training methods we endorse may be unorthodox, but they will assure we are both overloading and being progressive with all training protocols. The strength and conditioning routines at the University of Hartford are brief and intense out of necessity. Once again, our goal remains to maximize training in the least amount of time. Make the commitment to your team. Have laser-focus on goals. Get locked in. This unrelenting approach will make the difference in all phases of training.
