After joining the Portuguese Football Federation’s national team in preparation for the World Cup Qualifiers in 2009, Gaspar was invited by Professor Carlos Queiroz, Portugal’s head coach, to join his staff once again for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. With this accomplishment, Gaspar became the lone North American collegiate soccer coach to serve on a coaching staff in this year’s World Cup games. Portugal allowed just one goal in four games, falling 1-0 to Spain in the knockout round on June 29.

Freshman James Stamopoulos was Hartford’s final honoree, landing one of 11 spots on the America East AllRookie Team. Gaspar and his team’s success also carried over into the classroom as 16 studentathletes earned Academic Honor Roll recognition and three seniors were placed on All-Academic squads.

Gaspar played an important role in planning the Portuguese Soccer Festival held on September 19, 2009, an event that featured the Hawks versus Hartwick College at Alumni Stadium. The stadium was packed with a record-breaking crowd of 1,498 spectators as the Hawks welcomed Professor Queiroz and legendary Portuguese soccer player Antonio Simoes to the game. Prior to his journey with the Portuguese National Team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Gaspar provided a wealth of international soccer experience to Hartford. In 2003, Gaspar served as the goalkeeper coach for SL Benfica where he helped lead the team to the Portuguese Cup Championship under head coach Antonio Camacho, the former coach of the Spanish national team. Following his stint with SL Benfica, Gaspar was named the goalkeeper coach for the world-renowned Portuguese club team FC Porto, where he helped lead the team to a World Intercontinental Championship in Japan. Regarded as one of the top goalkeeper coaches in the world, Gaspar trained FC Porto’s Vitor Baia, who was selected as the UEFA’s Best European Goalkeeper in 2004. A native of South Glastonbury, Conn., Gaspar made history in 1993 when he became the first American born soccer coach to accept a full-time coaching position in Europe with Sporting Lisbon of the Portuguese First Division. As goalkeeper coach, he helped lead Sporting Lisbon to the Portuguese National Cup title in 1995. In 1993, Gaspar was a part of Portugal’s World Cup qualification process, but the squad lost to Italy, falling short of a bid to qualify for the 1994 World Cup hosted by the United States. During his first stint with the Portuguese national team, Gaspar coached alongside Professor Queiroz, the former coach of Real Madrid and the English Premier League’s Manchester United, as well as Felipe Scolari, the former head coach of the Brazilian national team that won the World Cup in 2002. In the summer of 2009, Gaspar reunited with the Portuguese Football Federation’s national team coaching staff in preparation for the team’s 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Alongside Professor Queiroz, Gaspar had the opportunity to train Ronaldo, who is
considered by many football fans and players to be the greatest striker in the history of the game. Portugal posted a qualifying campaign with a pair of wins over Bosnia and Herzegovina and earned its trip to South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. From 2000-02, Gaspar served as head coach of the Connecticut Wolves in the USL Pro League. In 2002, he led the Wolves to a New England Cup Championship as well as the D3 semifinals. Gaspar has also held coaching positions with both the Portuguese and South African national teams as well as an assistant coaching position with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars of Major League Soccer. In 1999, he served as the associate head men’s soccer coach at Central Connecticut State University. Gaspar is the founder and president of the highly respected Star Goalkeeper Academy as well as the owner and director of the Connecticut Soccer School. Gaspar holds a USSF ‘A’ License as well as a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma. Gaspar’s field coaching experience also includes an assistant position with the Japan League Grampus Eight in 1996. He has trained the goalkeepers of the 1996 U.S. Men’s Olympic Team, the 1991 U.S. Women’s National Team, and the U.S. Men’s Under 18 and Under 17 National Teams in 1998 and 1996. The hiring serves as a homecoming for Gaspar, who played in goal for the Hawks from 1974-77. He posted a career goals-againstaverage of 1.52, averaging 87 saves and 930 minutes per season. He helped lead Hartford to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1976 and 1977, and an ECAC tournament appearance in 1974. Gaspar was named All-New England and participated in the Senior Bowl in 1977. He was inducted into Hartford’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002.

2010 season preview Fresh off three-straight America East Tournament appearances, most recently coming just one game shy of reaching the America East Championship, head coach Dan Gaspar is excited to build on the momentum that was generated last season and pilot the Hawks to their ultimate goal - a conference championship. An impressive mix of experience and youth come together under coach Gaspar to form the 2010 Hartford men’s soccer team. As the Hawks look to make noise in the conference and capture their first America East title since the 1999 season, they will rely on a solid core of returning players while adding 12 standout newcomers into the mix. One glance down
the 2010 roster proves that the goalkeeper and midfield positions will be the program’s stronger points this season as the Hawks return nearly their entire goalkeeper and midfield staff. After losing 50-percent of last year’s goal production to graduation, coach Gaspar’s biggest challenge for the 2010 campaign will be to fill the void in scoring. Although the Hawks lost quality players to graduation, Gaspar is confident that this year’s recruiting class, once adjusted to the pace and standard of play in the college game, will be highly successful.
Keepers Coach Gaspar is excited about this season and for the future of the net minders. A trio of juniors - Jordan Bar, Luke Citriniti and Matt McElroy - has potential to receive the starting nod between the posts on opening day. The threesome is engaged in the most competitive arena that coach Gaspar has seen in the goalkeeper position since his hiring in 2005. Citriniti returns for the upcoming season with ample game experience. In 2008, the Niskayuna, N.Y. native patrolled the net in eight games, allowing just four goals for a .062 goals-againstaverage.

Bar, a vocal presence on the pitch, has impressed the coaching staff during the preseason and will fight for the Hawks’ starting spot in net. Rounding out the group will be new-

comer Matt McElroy, a transfer from Davidson College. In two seasons at Davidson, the Potomac, Md. native totaled 15 appearances and sported a team-best save percentage of .690 as a freshman.
Defenders Losing only the service of Cedomir Tomcic, a two-year starter who earned America East First Team honors, the Hawks are in terrific shape in the back, featuring an athletic group of size and speed. The Hawks return senior captain Bojan Delibasic and junior Jorge Rodriguez, two skillful and experienced defenders, to the back line. The addition of newcomers Tomás Boyle, Daniel Sangster and Liam Williams to the defensive side of the pitch will provide coach Gaspar with depth and options for Hartford’s center defense. Having started 51 of 52 games played, Delibasic has the most experience of the current players and will be expected to step up as a leader. After playing this summer with the Puerto Rico U-21 National Team, Rodriguez, a two-year starter, has returned to campus for preseason in excellent shape. Entering his third season with the scarlet and white, the 2008 All-Rookie Team selection knows the conference well and will use his speed to help stifle the opponents’ offense. Having played at the highest levels prior to their signings with Hartford, Boyle, Sangster and Williams enter the Hawks’ program as great prospects for the center of the defense. A native of Ireland, Boyle spent six seasons with Salesian College and captained the Ireland U-18 team in 2009-
2010 season preview 10. Coach Gaspar says that all three fresh faces possess all of the attributes and characteristics to be successful in the America East. Williams, also hailing from across the pond, punched in five years of time at Bradon Forest Secondary School in England before playing for Cirencester College for two years. Standing at 6-4, the England Schools U-18 international will add a physical presence to Hartford’s back line.
Coming off an America East All-Rookie Team season, Stamopolous is one of the quickest and most skilled players in the conference. An exciting and entertaining player to watch on the pitch, the crafty midfielder is a natural winger as he dished out a team-best four assists in his debut season. Stamopoulos finished fifth on the squad in scoring last season with seven total points.
Also expected to be a physical presence and compete for time in the center of the defense is Sangster. The New England Revolution Academy product led Duxbury High School in scoring for three-straight seasons while captaining the squad for his final two stints.
Lewis paid his dues as a freshman last season and is expected to impact the team as an ample scoring threat from the position. Coach Gaspar is also looking to Liapis to make an impact in the center of the park. The junior is coming off an impressive spring season and will be given the opportunity to contribute this season.
Midfielders
Forwards
The middle of the field again features a strong group of upperclassmen. In the 2010 midfield, coach Gaspar has the luxury of looking to the experience of senior captains Sam Groves and Jamie Thomas to lead the unit along with junior Andrew Liapis, and sophomores Kevin Lewis and James Stamopoulos.
The graduation of America East AllConference Team members Ivan Guarin and Carlos VIlla from the front line leaves a void in both scoring and leadership, and coach Gaspar is eager to see who will step up. One player that is expected to be major a contributor and help make up for the loss of over 50-percent of the Hawks’ goal production from last season will be junior Patrick Boucher.
Groves has started in 42-consecutive games dating back to the 2007 season. A speedy midfielder who was often underrated in his earlier years with the Hawks, Groves now commands the respect of both players and coaches around the America East. Thomas has the most experience of the midfield unit with 52 career games and 49 starts under his belt. A well conditioned and fit player with excellent technique, Thomas will run the midfield for the team this season alongside classmate Groves.
Having started 32 of 35 career games played, Boucher is one of the conference’s quickest players and will be asked to step into a leadership role. The squad’s returning leading scorer from 2009, the Connecticut native was a persistent force on the Hawks front line with three goals - all of which were game-winners. Boucher also contributed three assists last year for 12 points.
Coach Gaspar has other players at his disposal and will use the preseason and first few game of the season to find the right group to utilize. Newcomers Steven Aiston and Seán McKinny will provide depth on the offensive end. The team’s leading scorer for threestraight seasons at Gateshead College in England, Aiston’s speed and explosiveness will cause havoc for Hartford’s opponents this season. McKinney, Hartford’s fourth newcomer from overseas, spent time at St. Columb’s College in Ireland where he led the squad to three Northern Ireland

2010 season preview national championships as well as fiveconsecutive unbeaten seasons. The team’s top goal scorer for two seasons, McKinney will be a strong, physical addition to the Hawks’ front line and is capable of finding the back of the net and becoming an offensive threat.
The 2010 Schedule Gaspar and the Hawks are not shying away from competition as the 2010 schedule features three dates with three of last year’s NCAA tournament participants. Also highlighting Hartford’s 2010 campaign are rematches with Boston College, Hartwick and America East conference-foe Stony Brook. Hartford will play a total of 15 regular season games in 2010, seven of which will be played on the friendly confines of Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. The season kicks off with an away game at Atlantic Coast Conference rival and third round NCAA Tournament participant Boston College on September 1, the first of eight non-conference opponents that Hartford will face this season.
will feature a pair of tough matches with Big East opponents. Hartford will face the St. John’s Red Storm, the 2009 Big East Champions, on September 17 before traveling to New Jersey on September 19 to battle the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Hartford’s final non-conference tune-up before league play will be at Hartwick on September 25. Hartford opens up America East conference play on October 2 when it welcomes Albany to West Hartford. The Hawks will also host New Hampshire (October 16) before facing league rival Stony Brook for their final home game of the regular season on October 27. The squad’s 2010 conference slate also features dates at Boston University (October 9), Binghamton (October 13), UMBC (October 23) and the regular season finale at Vermont (October 30).
The Hawks head back to West Hartford on September 4 for their home opener, the first of threestraight games that will be played at Alumni Stadium. The home stand begins with a nonconference clash with the Boston University Terriers and concludes with a pair of matches with in-state rivals Quinnipiac (September 7) and Central Connecticut (September 11). Hartford will also host Army on October 20 for its final non-conference contest. The Hawks first road trip of the season

WALTER HARRISON university president G
rowth, vitality, and service to the community are key attributes of Walter Harrison’s first 10 years as president of the University of Hartford. Since his appointment as the University of Hartford’s fifth president in 1998, the University has experienced a period of energy and momentum unmatched in its history. President Harrison has overseen dramatic improvements in academic quality, finances, and
During President Harrison’s tenure, the University has undertaken a vigorous and comprehensive building campaign. Many of the University’s residence halls have been renovated, and Hawk Hall, the University’s new five-story, 208-bed residence for first-year students, was completed during the summer of 2007. The ovalshaped Alumni Plaza, constructed out of concrete of various colors and finishes, now provides students with a large gathering spot on the residential side of campus.
At the heart of this construction campaign are three major new additions to the University’s signature academic programs: The Renée Samuels Center of the Hartford Art School (opened in January 2007), the Integrated Science, Engineering, and Technology Complex (opened in 2005), and the Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center (opened in September 2008), which houses the Dance and Theatre divisions of The Hartt School. public schools. It is the only private university in the country with two public magnet schools on campus—the University of Hartford Magnet School and the University High School of Science and Engineering. President Harrison’s community involvement is extensive. He serves on the boards of directors of the Connecticut Conference of Independent Colleges and the Hartford Consortium of Higher Education. He is currently the president of the board of the Hartford Stage Company. He serves as trustee or director of a number of other Hartford-area organizations, including the Greater Hartford Arts Council, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, the Connecticut Science Center, and Suffield Academy. He is also a director of WorldBusiness Capital, an international finance firm based in Hartford. Reflecting his longtime interest in intercollegiate athletics, President Harrison chairs the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Committee on Academic Performance, the group charged with implementing academic reforms among the nation’s leading intercollegiate athletic programs, and serves on a number of other NCAA committees. He is the immediate past chair of the NCAA Executive Committee. He also serves on the Presidential Advisory Committee of the Association of Governing Boards. All this is a long way from President Harrison’s beginnings as a scholar of American literature and culture. A native of Pittsburgh, he graduated from Trinity College in Hartford in 1968, then earned a master’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1969. After an interim of three years to serve as a captain in the
United States Air Force, President Harrison earned a doctorate from the University of California–Davis. His doctoral dissertation, “Out of Play: Baseball Fiction from Pulp to Art,” was one of the earliest scholarly treatments of baseball and its place in American life. In 1982 President Harrison left full-time teaching to take an administrative position at Colorado College. He joined Gehrung Associates University Relations Counselors in 1985, becoming president of the firm shortly thereafter. In 1989 President Harrison moved to the University of Michigan, where he became vice president of university relations and secretary of the university. President Harrison and his wife, Dianne, a scholar of 19th-century Victorian literature and mystery literature, make their home in Russell House, the president’s residence at the University of Hartford.

Hartford Athletics HISTORY and hawks in the pros The University of Hartford celebrates its 27th year competing at the Division I level in 2009-10. Division I competition in all sports began in 1984-85, and the ensuing 26 years have been keynoted by success. The following is a sampling of some of the achievements. Hartford has fielded NCAA or national tournament teams in six sports: women’s basketball (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010), men’s golf (198595, 2001, 2007), women’s soccer (1989-92, 1994-95, 1997-2002, 2006), men’s soccer (1991-92, 1996), men’s tennis (2002) and women’s volleyball (1993). The Hawks have also received ECAC postseason bids in baseball (1988, 1992) and volleyball (1991). The Hawks sport conference champions in seven sports: women’s basketball (2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008), men’s soccer (1991, 1992, 1996, 1999), women’s soccer (1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2006), men’s golf (1988-95, 2001-02, 2004, 2006-07), men’s tennis (1990, 1991, 1995, 2002), women’s golf (2005) and women’s volleyball (1993).

In addition to team success, Hartford players and coaches have received a multitude of individual honors. The awards have ranged from All-American distinction and national Coach of the Year honors to conference Player of the Year, All-Conference, individual tournament championships and others. All-Americans have been crowned in the following sports: baseball (2), men’s basketball (1), men’s golf (6), men’s lacrosse (3), men’s soccer (2) and women’s soccer (11).
Three former Hartford student-athletes stand out among those who have played professionally. Vin Baker, who starred as an All-American on the basketball court for the Hawks, played 13 seasons in the NBA. A four-time NBA All-Star, he averaged 15.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in 791 career games. Baker was picked eighth overall in the June 1993 NBA draft. At the time he was the highest draft pick ever from a Connecticut college or university. Jeff Bagwell, who played third base for Hartford from 1987 to 1989 and is the New England career leader in batting average at .413, played first base for the Houston Astros. In his 16 years with the Astros he hit .297 with 449 home runs and 1,529 runs batted in. He ranks among Houston’s career leaders in batting average, slugging percentage, home runs and RBI. He was the 1994 National League MVP, 1991 Rookie of the Year, and was a four-time All-Star (1994, 1996, 1997, 1999). Men’s golfer Jerry Kelly, who topped the Nike Tour in earnings in 1995, has been impressive in his 12 years playing on
the PGA Tour. He’s topped $2 million in earnings in three of the past six seasons, and he played on the United States President’s Cup team in 2003. In 2002, Kelly was sixth on the PGA money list and finished in the Top 25 at 13 tournaments, including wins at the Sony Open in Hawaii and the Advil Western Open. Men’s golfers Tim Petrovic and Patrick Sheehan have also enjoyed success on the PGA Tour. Petrovic, now in his seventh season, broke through in 2005 with his first career victory at the Zurich Classic. Sheehan is in his fifth year on the PGA Tour and has topped $3 million in career earnings. Other Hartford athletes who are currently playing in the professional ranks include Tracey Kelusky (National Lacrosse League), Earl Snyder (minor league baseball), Chris Doyle (USL First Division soccer), Daniel Antunez (USL), Saralyn Smith (AVP), Rory Glaves (NLL), Todd Richard (NLL), Derek Suddons (NLL), Jason Clark (NLL), Josh Wasson (NLL) and Matt Holman (NLL).

The philosophy we endorse as part of the Hartford Hawks strength and conditioning program is quite simple. We are seeking the best gains, in the least amount of time, in the safest way possible. All training sessions are supervised by the strength and conditioning staff to augment results and reduce any chance for injury. We endorse a variety of modalities, and forms of training, and are constantly looking to improve the program to make it more efficient. As a student-athlete your time will be limited due to class schedule, practice time, travel, homework, eating, sleeping, and hopefully some form of a social life.

men’s soccer conditioning The voluntary training cards provided are basic routines that follow similar protocols you will experience on campus. However, we have simplified them to meet the equipment you most likely will have available to utilize during the summer training period. When you come to campus you will be exposed to the full effects and direction of the strength and conditioning program. All student-athletes at the University of Hartford will experience mental, and physical, challenges that will push them well beyond what each individual thought was possible. Ultimately, the student-athlete is responsible for their success or failure. We as coaches are here to provide a training plan, and guide you.
Following the rules behind the strength and conditioning program will help you achieve the top five reasons for training. The training methods we endorse may be unorthodox, but they will assure we are both overloading and being progressive with all training protocols. The strength and conditioning routines at the University of Hartford are brief and intense out of necessity. Once again, our goal remains to maximize training in the least amount of time. Make the commitment to your team. Have laser-focus on goals. Get locked in. This unrelenting approach will make the difference in all phases of training.

There are two ways to become involved as a donor to University of Hartford men’s soccer. Both play an important role in shaping the direction of the program and impacting the lives of student-athletes. The first is the Booter’s Club. Donations to the Booter’s Club are annual commitments used to supplement the program’s operating budget. Improving the team’s schedule and expanding resources for recruiting are a couple ways these resources are utilized. The second is the Soccer Excellence Association. Soccer Excellence, under the leadership of alumnus Bob Forrester ’66, supports the annual awards banquet for men’s and women’s soccer and addresses long term program needs identified by coaches. The objective for the group is to enrich the experience of student-athletes by providing a margin of excellence that elevates the profile of program and contributes to student-athlete welfare. Typical initiatives funded by Soccer Excellence leadership include international team travel, field upgrades and alumni engagement events.
