PETER LAWRENCE head coach SIXTH Season •
P
eter Lawrence enters his sixth year as head coach of the University of Hartford men’s lacrosse team in 2011.
In 2009, Inside Lacrosse ranked two of rookies from Hartford’s freshman class in the final top 25 recruits in the country. That season four freshmen were named to the America East All-Rookie Team and goalie Scott Bement was named America East Rookie of the Year. Two sophomores from the 2009 squad also earned all-conference honors, and the team’s top three scorers were all freshmen.
Lawrence contributed to program history last season when Tim Fallon became just the second Hawk to earn Division I USILA All-American accolades. A face-off specialist, Fallon landed honorable mention honors after finishing 207-of-333 (62.2-percent) at the face-off X, ranking first in the NCAA Division I statistics, while leading the country in ground balls (9.4 per game) during his junior season.
Last season, Lawrence coached nine different players to America East All-Conference distinction including a pair of first team honorees. Two freshmen landed on the America East All-Rookie Team while five others players – including two sophomores – garnered America East Second Team honors. In addition, Lawrence and the Hawks’ success carried over into the classroom as 15 student-athletes earned Academic Honor Roll recognition and two players were placed on All-Academic squads.
Lawrence’s crowning achievement to this point was a historic There has been a tremendous youth movement at Hartford win over sixth ranked UMBC in 2009. onathan Basti joined the Hartford men’s lacrosse coaching staff in the summer of 2008 and serves as top assistant under head coach Peter Lawrence. Basti has been instrumental in helping Tim Fallon evolve into one of the country’s top faceoff specialists. In 2010, Fallon was 207-of-333 (62.2-percent) at the face-off X, ranking first in the NCAA Division I statistics. In addition, he led the nation in ground balls, scooping up (9.4 per game) during his junior season while earning Division I USILA All-American honors.
Prior to Hartford, Basti spent one season as the top assistant at Lafayette College and the previous three years as an assistant at Fairfield University.
“Jon brings a great deal of passion, experience, strong recruiting ties, and a desire to restore the tradition at Hartford,” said Lawrence at the time of the hiring. “I very much look forward to working with Jon and anticipate him making a huge impact on our student-athletes.”

Basti served as defensive coordinator and face-off coach in his one year at Lafayette. He was also heavily involved in both recruiting and scouting. Lafayette finished with an overall record of 4-9 in 2008.
A former player at Fairfield, Basti returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach for the 2005 season. Involved in day-to-day operations of the program, he worked as assistant offensive coordinator and oversaw the face-off men. In 2005, Fairfield ranked as high as 15th in the national rankings on its way to a Great Western Lacrosse League championship. In 2007, the Stags reached a program-best No.12 ranking.
Prior to Fairfield, Basti served as the head coach at Eastern Connecticut State University from 2002-04. He posted a 22-9 career record at ECSU while winning a pair of Little East Conference championships and earning two NCAA Tournament berths. He also worked as an assistant coach at Sacred Heart University from 2000-02, leading the face-off and defensive units.
As a student-athlete at Fairfield, Basti helped the Stags to a MAAC regular season championship and two ECAC Tournament titles. He was also a member of the 1996 and 1997 MAAC championship teams. Basti graduated from Fairfield in 1999 with degrees in politics and history and returned to complete his Master’s Degree in education/social studies in 2002. Basti and his wife, Megan, reside in East Haven, Conn.

B
rian Tilley enters his second season as an assistant men’s lacrosse coach at Hartford. Tilley’s responsibilities include serveing as the Hawks’ offensive coordinator and goalie coach. He also assists with the program’s recruiting. Tilley reunites with both a program and coach with which he is very familiar. A graduate of Hartford in 2008, he played for the Hawks from 2005-08 and spent three seasons under Lawrence’s tutelage. “It is nice to add an alumnus to staff who has so much pride, as well as a desire to help restore the tradition here at Hartford,” said Lawrence at the time of his hire. “Brian has great character, values, and a tireless work ethic which will transfer to our players.” Tilley, who graduated with a degree in entrepreneurial studies, began his coaching career as an assistant at Oneonta State. While with the Red Dragons, he served as the offensive coordinator and piloted the team’s recruiting efforts. The Red Dragons finished the 2009 season with a 6-10 overall mark and 2-5 in the SUNYAC. As a midfielder at the University of Hartford, Tilley was a four-year letterwinner, playing in 57 games. At the end of his senior season, he was deemed the team’s most valuable player and was selected to play in the Turfer Senior East/West All-Star Game. In the America East Conference goal scoring rankings in 2008, Tilley ranked second in scoring among midfielders and eighth overall. At the end of his freshman year, he was selected to the America East All-Rookie Team. Prior to attending Hartford, the Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y. native played lacrosse at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington, N.Y. During his tenure at St. Anthony’s he helped lead his team to three N.S.C.H.S.A.A. league championships. As a senior he earned the lacrosse sportsmanship award.
W
ill Cullen joins the Hartford lacrosse staff as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2011 season. Cullen will assist with the Hawks’ defense and will run the box for the Scarlet and White. Cullen began his coaching career in November of 2009 when he was named an assistant varsity lacrosse coach and the head junior varsity lacrosse coach at North Haven High School. During his tenure with the Indians, he held the responsibilities of implementing the squad’s offense and defense as well as the man-up and man-down units. In addition, Cullen serves as a member of the BIG 3 Lacrosse Boys’ Camp coaching staff, and is currently the head coach for the organization’s summer and fall travel teams based out of North Haven, Conn. Cullen also served as the director of North Haven Lacrosse Camps for three years. Cullen graduated with a Bachelor of Science in sports management from Mount Ida College in Newton, Mass. where he was a four-member of the lacrosse team (2004-08). A team captain in his final season, Cullen helped lead the Mustangs to four consecutive North Atlantic Conference regular season titles and four-straight conference tournament championships.

Fresh off the program’s best season since 2003, head Peter Lawrence is excited to build on the momentum that was generated last season and pilot the Hawks to their ultimate goal – an America East Conference championship. An impressive mix of talented veterans and youth come together under Lawrence to form the 2011 Hartford men’s lacrosse team, a squad that is booming with confidence and poised to take Hartford to the next level. With 19 returning upperclassmen and a strong core of versatile freshmen and sophomores on the roster, the Hawks will look to make noise in the conference and capture their first America East title since the 2003 season. The Hawks, who lost six games by two goals or less, including five by a single tally last year, return all but one starter including a league-high eight all-conference performers and nearly 90-percent of the offense from last year’s squad. Four of Hartford’s top five scorers return from a team that ranked second in America East scoring (10.00 goals per game). The Hawks also have all-conference performers in the key positions of goalkeeper in junior Scott Bement and at face-off spe-
6
cialist in senior Tim Fallon. Ranked third in the America East by the league’s coaches in its annual preseason poll, the Hawks are in a position that no one would have predicted two years ago, but are well aware of the raised expectations. Experience, depth and confidence have this year’s Hartford lacrosse team ready to compete in the competitive America East conference against preseason favorites Stony Brook and Albany.
ATTACK Hartford boast great depth in the attack this season, anchored by returners Aidan Genik, Ryan Compitello and Rory Nunamacher. For the first time in Lawrence’s hiring, the Hawks will be adding a new feature to their already potent attack. Instead of playing his three starting attackers in for 60 minutes, Lawrence now has the luxury of utilizing a five-man rotation, allowing legs to stay fresh as well as the opportunity to keep opponents on their heels with a constant mix of new personnel. Junior attack Aidan Genik, a crafty righty around the cage, is coming off one of the most impressive offensive seasons in recent history, in which he
hartford hawks men’s lacrosse
scored a team-high 36 goals and added nine assists. A second-team pick in 2010, Genik proved to show up in big moments as he netted the game-winner in the comeback win against Quinnipiac, and again when he scored a career-high five goals in a tight loss to America East rival Stony Brook. The remaining two spots on the Hawks’ attack will be filled by Rory Nunamacher, a sophomore, and junior Ryan Compitello. Compitello, Genik’s lefty counterpart who joined his classmate on the America East All-Academic squad a year ago, led the Hawks with 21 assists while starting 12 games. Lawrence expects Compitello to play a major role in this year’s offense which amassed an impressive 10.0 goals per game in 2010. Nunamacher made an immediate impact on the Hawks’ offense as a freshman, seeing time in all 14 games while appearing in the starting lineup in half of the contests. He tallied 12 points on nine goals and three assists en route to earning America East All-Rookie Team honors. Lawrence’s second group will be bolstered by Drew Haig and Agustus Guido, a pair of sophomores that
jared franze will likely be rotating into the attack. Lawrence believes that this pair of young guns will provide the energy the Hawks need while allowing their starters to rest. Haig, a great shooter and finisher, should continue to show improvement as the season progresses while Guido skills on the offensive end of the field is a strong advantage.
MIDFIELD Just like the Hawks’ attack, Lawrence believes the midfield will thrive off of a deep rotation of talent, insisting that as many as eight players will see amplitude of playing time in the middle of the field. This year’s midfield unit is composed of a group of crafty athletes who can play at both ends of the field and have the ability to create offense through transition. In addition, believes that there will be a constant competition throughout the spring to compete for spots in the first two rotations. Leading that group will be junior Carter Bender, one of Lawrence’s most talented middies, who ranked second on the team with 34 points. With 19 goals and 15 assists, Bender is one of the most complete players on the squad with his exceptional speed and vision,
making first team all-conference and second team All-New England honors a year ago. Sophomore Jared Franze is one of the young Hawks that opponents need to keep an eye on. A shifty, offensiveminded midfielder who was an allconference second-team selection as a freshman, Franze netted 19 goals, including four in his collegiate debut against UMass. If teams focus too much on Genik and Bender, look for Franze to have another outstanding year.
in Pennsylvania, will also be thrown in the mix at the midfield position. In addition, Lawrence expects junior Martin Bowes to have a break-out season in 2011. The midfielder has shown great athleticism and, according to his coach, has become one of the best on the squad at shooting and dodging.
FACE-OFF
Senior co-captain Michael Cudmore, one of the best in the conference at securing ground balls and a workhorse between the lines, is coming off a solid season with eight goals and 13 assists with nine starts. The second-team specialist will be starting in the face-off group as well as playing middie, which calls for the rotation of fresh legs that Lawrence is planning for the upcoming season.
The Hawks’ roster boasts an all-conference performer and All-American honoree in the key position of face-off specialists. Tim Fallon, a senior, proved himself to be one of the top – if not the best – face-off specialists in the country. According to the 2010 Division I statistics, there was not a better player in the nation at winning offensive possessions than Fallon. After leading the nation by winning nearly 62 percent of his attempts, Fallon returns to handle the face-offs for Hartford.
Seniors Vinny Pellizzi and Sean King, as well as junior Austin Rogers, will see plenty of playing time in the midfield, especially down the road when potential injuries and lineup changes occur. Tate Klidonas, a well-decorated high school player at Emmaus High School
Fallon is coming off one of the most decorated seasons in Hartford history in which he led the nation in face-off percentage (.622) and ground balls (131) while reeling off three goals and adding four assists en route to becoming just the second All-American in
hartford hawks men’s lacrosse

SCOTT BEMENT
the program. A two-time America East All-Conference honoree, he won the possession battles for Hartford more often than not to help the team catch the conference by surprise. The Hawks boast the conference’s best face-off group with sophomore Mike Brown serving as Fallon’s back-up. According to many, Brown has played a huge role in Fallon’s success. Finishing 7-for-10 from the face-off X in 2010, his biggest impact comes in practice, where he has pushed Fallon to national recognition. Brown will be sent out for draws in the 2011 season after yet another strong fall season.
LONG STICK MIDFIELD Junior Ben Knapton will be joined by a new face, Alex Matarazzo, as the Hawks’ primary options at long stick middy. Knapton, a preseason America East All-Conference team pick, saw time in all 14 games a year ago making eight starts. A dominant physical presence in the midfield at 6-4, Knapton forced Hawks’ opponents into 19 turnovers, a team-best, while notching two points on a goal and an assist. Matarazzo, a product of Fairfield College Preparatory School, has displayed great potential at the pole and
8
has a great stick.
DEFENSIVE MIDFIELD The Hawks will look to senior co-captain Nick Frigenti to carry the load at the defensive midfield spot that also includes classmate Brendan Marlow and junior Kyle Goodchild, both of whom add a wealth of experience to the position. With 35 career games under his belt, Frigenti’s role will be expanded in his final season with the Scarlet and White. Lawrence expects Adam Yee, a freshman, to step up and see significant playing time.
DEFENSE Hartford’s defense is looking to improve on its 2010 campaign, a season in which it surrendered 11.5 goals per game. Similar to the Hawks’ attack, this unit will likely see a five-man rotation to keep the group focused and aggressive toward the end of games, allowing the squad to close out games on top. Senior co-captain Conor Flynn returns as the team’s most physical defender and will again lead the Hawks’ back line. Despite being sidelined for the last four games of the season with a
hartford hawks men’s lacrosse
season-ending injury, the two-time second team pick is healthy and ready to improve from a shortened season where he collected 27 ground balls and forced 14 turnovers. Senior Dan Gillespie and junior Steve Groccia will fill the remaining two starting roles for the Hawks, providing experience and intelligence to the back line. Groccia, one of the hardest workers on the squad, started all 14 games last season and brings a defensive style to the field that gets the job done. Gillespie, who earned the nod for a starting spot for the final nine games, proved his worth last year and is ready to again make an impact on the defensive side of the field. The competition behind this group of upper-classmen will be an intense battle as the season progresses as junior Scott Kessler joins sophomores Nick Ceme, Brendan Lake, Ben Liebel, and Adam Haig in the fight for spots on the Hawks’ defensive line.
GOAL Hartford’s defense is anchored by one of the best goalies in the country in junior Scott Bement. Following a superb freshman campaign where he was
ben knapton
named the league’s rookie of the year in 2009 ranking 13th in the country with a .577 save percentage, Bement garnered America East All-Conference Second Team accolades last year. Bement ranked fourth in the league in both save percentage and saves per game while starting all 14 games for the Hawks. Against a tough schedule and raised expectations, these are impressive numbers for the junior to build on, allowing the team to reach its ultimate goal – a conference title. Backing up Bement between the pipes is sophomore Frank Piechota. With one year of college experience behind him, Piechota returned to campus in the fall in much improved shape and will continue to receive experience playing under one of the most promising goalies in program history.
THE 2011 SCHEDULE Two home games against Brown and Stony Brook, both NCAA Tournament teams in 2010, and three total games against preseason national top-25 teams highlight the Hartford men’s lacrosse 2011 schedule. The Hawks will play a 15-game slate that includes seven home dates at Al-Marzook Field.
The Hawks kick-off the regular season at home on February 19 with a non-conference match-up against No. 16/17 Massachusetts. Lawrence is confident that this contest will help prepare his squad for the latter half of the schedule that includes America East Conference play. Following the home opener, Hartford will hit the road for a pair of nonconference games against Holy Cross (February 26) and MAAC perennial power Siena (March 5). The Hawks scored victories against both the Crusaders and Saints last season. The Scarlet and White will return to West Hartford for a two-game home stand with No. 19/20 Brown (March 9) and Bellarmine (March 13). Last year, the Hawks took then 19th-ranked Brown to the wire, dropping a narrow 13-12 overtime decision in Providence. Hartford will also be looking for some revenge against the Knights who pulled out of the Nutmeg State with an 8-7 win at Al-Marzook Field. Hartford continues its non-conference slate with a match-up at Bucknell on March 16, another preseason top-25 squad, marking the first-ever meeting between the Hawks and Bison. Follow-
ing a road date at in-state rival Quinnipiac on March 23, the Hawks play host to another Connecticut opponent when they welcome the Sacred Heart Pioneers to Alumni Stadium on March 23. Hartford will then travel to Staten Island on March 26 to renew a forgotten series with Wagner. The Hawks and Seahawks last met 10 years ago when the Hawks won 26-2 in West Hartford. Out-of-conference play concludes on April 12 with a home game featuring the Fairfield Stags. April brings the Hawks to the home fields of conference-foes Vermont and Binghamton before playing host to their biggest rival in recent years, the UMBC Retrievers, on April 30th to close out the regular season. Hartford has beaten perennial contenders UMBC in each of the past two seasons, putting them ahead of the Retrievers in the preseason poll. The America East championships begin on Thursday, May 5th with the semifinals. The league champion will be crowned on Saturday, May 7th with the site of the contest being held at the field of highest remaining seed.

2010 season in review ALL-AMERICAN... Tim Fallon became just the second Hawk to earn Division I United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-American honors when he landed honorable mention honors. Chris LaMonica, a goalie, received the same honor in 1997 after posting a record breaking season in net for Hartford. Fallon was also placed on the Division I laxpower.com All-American First Team. MAKING STRIDES... Head coach Peter Lawrence guided Hartford to its winningest season since 2003 which included the program’s second-straight win over UMBC, a game that was aired live across the nation on ESPNU. The Hawks finished the season 4-10 (1-4 America East), losing six games by two goals or less, including five by a single tally. NATIONAL STATS... Tim Fallon proved himself to be one of the top - if not the best - face-off specialists in the country in 2010. Averaging 9.4 ground balls-per-game and winning 207-of-333 duels (62.2-percent), Fallon closed out his junior season ranked on top of the NCAA statistics in both categories. Also cracking the national stats were classmates Aidan Genik and Ryan Compitello. Genik ranked 11th nationally in goals-pergame and Compitello’s 1.5 assists-per-game put him 25th in the NCAA. HALFWAY THERE... Three Hawks - Carter Bender, Ryan Compitello and Aidan Genik - all surpassed the mid-way mark to the 100-Point Club during their sophomore
seasons. Genik leads all active Hawks with 79 points, Compitello has tallied 64 career points while Bender enters his junior season with 63 points. FACING THE BEST... In 14 total games on the slate for Hartford in 2010, the Hawks were paired up against five opponents who were ranked in the NCAA’s Top 25. Hartford opened the season with No. 17 Massachusetts, and followed that contest with a matchup against No. 13 Delaware. The Hawks also faced Brown (No. 19), Stony Brook (No. 17) and Fairfield (No. 18) last season. SECOND FASTEST... Aidan Genik has compiled 79 points during his two years at Hartford, leading all active Hawks. The attackman is on pace to become the second fastest Hartford player to reach the 100-Point milestone. Brian LaMastro (19992002) is the leader of the club with 269 points, hitting the 100-Point climax mid-way through his second season with the Hawks. POSTSEASON HARDWARE... Nine different players earned America East All-Conference distinction last season, including a pair of first team honorees. A pair of freshmen landed on the all-rookie team while five other players garnered second team honors. In addition, the Hawks’ success carried over into the classroom as 15 student-athletes earned America East honor roll recognition and a pair of players were placed on AllAcademic squads.

Now in its fourth decade of operation, America East has evolved into one of the most comprehensive NCAA Division I conferences with a commitment to broad-based, competitive athletics programs, complementing the academic integrity and missions of the member institutions. Progressive in its approach to its more than 3,400 student-athletes, America East recognizes champions in each of its 20 sports: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's and women's indoor track and field, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's outdoor track and field, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis, and women’s volleyball. America East also conducts the nation’s most comprehensive academic recognition program for student-athletes.
With a geographic footprint covering the Mid-Atlantic to Northeast regions of the United States, America East strives to develop champions in academics, athletics and leadership at its nine member institutions: University at Albany, Binghamton University, Boston University, University of Hartford, University of Maine, UMBC, University of New Hampshire, Stony Brook University and University of Vermont.
Academics…
• Vermont captured its sixth straight America East Academic Cup in 2010 after its studentathletes registered a cumulative 3.19 grade-point average, which was the best mark in the award’s 15-year history. New Hampshire recorded a 3.16 GPA and also eclipsed the former standard, while five other schools earned a 3.0 GPA or better. • America East’s 3,400 student-athletes registered a combined 3.05 GPA during the 2009-10 academic year and over 60 percent of them were named to America East’s Academic Honor Roll for recording GPA’s of 3.0 or better. • Seven student-athletes were tabbed ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans during the 2009-10 season, the league’s most since the 2005-06 academic year. Twenty others were All-District selections. • Binghamton’s Sven Vloedgraven (tennis) and Vermont’s May Kotsopoulos (basketball) were the America East Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year, respectively. • Twenty-four America East teams were publicly recognized by the NCAA for their multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR), for finishing among the top 10 percent of teams in the nation, the league’s most since 2006.
Athletics…
• Boston University won the Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup for the fifth straight year and eighth time in the last nine years after capturing a league-high tying six championships, three regular-season titles and three runner-up finishes during the 2009-10

Leadership…
• America East entered into a corporate sponsorship with Newman’s Own, Inc. and Newman's Own Foundation, which sponsored the first Campus Community Service Challenge to foster social good on the conference’s nine campuses and in surrounding communities. Lewis, who captained the Boston Celtics at the time of his premature death, combined to make five NBA All-Star appearances during their careers. Three-time America East Player of the Year Malik Rose played 13 seasons with five teams and contributed to a pair of championships with the San Antonio Spurs. • Three-time All-America East selection Jose Juan Barea has played three season with the Dallas Mavericks and two-time Player of Year Marqus Blakely played with the Los Angeles Clippers’ summer league squad and earned a two-year contract. • Current women’s basketball coaches Jennifer Rizzotti (Hartford) and Cindy Blodgett (Maine) have appeared in WNBA action. • Hartford grad Jeff Bagwell belted 448 home runs in 15 seasons with the Houston Astros and was named the National League Rookie of the Year in 1991 and MVP in 1994. • Carlos Pena, the 1998 Baseball Scholar-Athlete at Northeastern, earned American League Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2007, won an American League Gold Glove at first base in 2008, made his first All-Star appearance in 2009 and finished with a league-leading 39 home runs. Minnesota Twins’ Joe Nathan, a former Academic All-American at Stony Brook, has been an All-Star four times and won the Rolaids Relief Man Award in 2009. • Several men’s soccer standouts have played professionally, both in the United States and abroad. Boston University graduate Andy Dorman played four seasons with the New England Revolution in MLS and has spent the last four years in the Scottish and English Premier Leagues. Two-time America East Goalkeeper of the Year Bouna Coundoul from Albany has played five seasons in MLS with the Colorado Rapids and New York Red Bulls and has 25 career shutouts. Steward Ceus (Albany) and Samuel Appiah (Boston University) were drafted by Colorado and the Houston Dynamo each of the last two years. • Boston University’s Mara Osher, a two-time all-conference honoree, and Casey Brown, the only three-time America East Defender of the Year, were drafted by the Washington Freedom and Boston Breakers of Women’s Professional Soccer, respectively.

WALTER HARRISON university president G
rowth, vitality, and service to the community are key attributes of Walter Harrison’s first 10 years as president of the University of Hartford. Since his appointment as the University of Hartford’s fifth president in 1998, the University has experienced a period of energy and momentum unmatched in its history. President Harrison has overseen dramatic improvements in academic quality, finances, and
During President Harrison’s tenure, the University has undertaken a vigorous and comprehensive building campaign. Many of the University’s residence halls have been renovated, and Hawk Hall, the University’s new five-story, 208-bed residence for first-year students, was completed during the summer of 2007. The ovalshaped Alumni Plaza, constructed out of concrete of various colors and finishes, now provides students with a large gathering spot on the residential side of campus.
At the heart of this construction campaign are three major new additions to the University’s signature academic programs: The Renée Samuels Center of the Hartford Art School (opened in January 2007), the Integrated Science, Engineering, and Technology Complex (opened in 2005), and the Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center (opened in September 2008), which houses the Dance and Theatre divisions of The Hartt School. public schools. It is the only private university in the country with two public magnet schools on campus—the University of Hartford Magnet School and the University High School of Science and Engineering. President Harrison’s community involvement is extensive. He serves on the boards of directors of the Connecticut Conference of Independent Colleges and the Hartford Consortium of Higher Education. He is currently the president of the board of the Hartford Stage Company. He serves as trustee or director of a number of other Hartford-area organizations, including the Greater Hartford Arts Council, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, the Connecticut Science Center, and Suffield Academy. He is also a director of WorldBusiness Capital, an international finance firm based in Hartford. Reflecting his longtime interest in intercollegiate athletics, President Harrison chairs the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Committee on Academic Performance, the group charged with implementing academic reforms among the nation’s leading intercollegiate athletic programs, and serves on a number of other NCAA committees. He is the immediate past chair of the NCAA Executive Committee. He also serves on the Presidential Advisory Committee of the Association of Governing Boards. All this is a long way from President Harrison’s beginnings as a scholar of American literature and culture. A native of Pittsburgh, he graduated from Trinity College in Hartford in 1968, then earned a master’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1969. After an interim of three years to serve as a captain in the
United States Air Force, President Harrison earned a doctorate from the University of California–Davis. His doctoral dissertation, “Out of Play: Baseball Fiction from Pulp to Art,” was one of the earliest scholarly treatments of baseball and its place in American life. In 1982 President Harrison left full-time teaching to take an administrative position at Colorado College. He joined Gehrung Associates University Relations Counselors in 1985, becoming president of the firm shortly thereafter. In 1989 President Harrison moved to the University of Michigan, where he became vice president of university relations and secretary of the university. President Harrison and his wife, Dianne, a scholar of 19th-century Victorian literature and mystery literature, make their home in Russell House, the president’s residence at the University of Hartford.

Revenue enhancement has also been an area of growth for Hartford under Meiser’s leadership. This has taken place through an expanded fund raising and alumni relations effort, development of a corporate sponsorship program, implementation of a licensing program and successful grant submissions. Most significantly, Hartford athletics embarked on a $10 million athletics capital campaign in April of 2003. Hartford Athletics HISTORY and hawks in the pros The University of Hartford celebrates its 27th year competing at the Division I level in 2009-10. Division I competition in all sports began in 1984-85, and the ensuing 26 years have been keynoted by success. The following is a sampling of some of the achievements. Hartford has fielded NCAA or national tournament teams in six sports: women’s basketball (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010), men’s golf (198595, 2001, 2007), women’s soccer (1989-92, 1994-95, 1997-2002, 2006), men’s soccer (1991-92, 1996), men’s tennis (2002) and women’s volleyball (1993). The Hawks have also received ECAC postseason bids in baseball (1988, 1992) and volleyball (1991). The Hawks sport conference champions in seven sports: women’s basketball (2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008), men’s soccer (1991, 1992, 1996, 1999), women’s soccer (1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2006), men’s golf (1988-95, 2001-02, 2004, 2006-07), men’s tennis (1990, 1991, 1995, 2002), women’s golf (2005) and women’s volleyball (1993).

In addition to team success, Hartford players and coaches have received a multitude of individual honors. The awards have ranged from All-American distinction and national Coach of the Year honors to conference Player of the Year, All-Conference, individual tournament championships and others. All-Americans have been crowned in the following sports: baseball (2), men’s basketball (1), men’s golf (6), men’s lacrosse (3), men’s soccer (2) and women’s soccer (11).
Three former Hartford student-athletes stand out among those who have played professionally. Vin Baker, who starred as an All-American on the basketball court for the Hawks, played 13 seasons in the NBA. A four-time NBA All-Star, he averaged 15.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in 791 career games. Baker was picked eighth overall in the June 1993 NBA draft. At the time he was the highest draft pick ever from a Connecticut college or university. Jeff Bagwell, who played third base for Hartford from 1987 to 1989 and is the New England career leader in batting average at .413, played first base for the Houston Astros. In his 16 years with the Astros he hit .297 with 449 home runs and 1,529 runs batted in. He ranks among Houston’s career leaders in batting average, slugging percentage, home runs and RBI. He was the 1994 National League MVP, 1991 Rookie of the Year, and was a four-time All-Star (1994, 1996, 1997, 1999).

In 2002, Kelly was sixth on the PGA money list and finished in the Top 25 at 13 tournaments, including wins at the Sony Open in Hawaii and the Advil Western Open. Men’s golfers Tim Petrovic and Patrick Sheehan have also enjoyed success on the PGA Tour. Petrovic, now in his seventh season, broke through in 2005 with his first career victory at the Zurich Classic. Sheehan is in his fifth year on the PGA Tour and has topped $3 million in career earnings. Other Hartford athletes who are currently playing in the professional ranks include Tracey Kelusky (National Lacrosse League), Earl Snyder (minor league baseball), Chris Doyle (USL First Division soccer), Daniel Antunez (USL), Saralyn Smith (AVP), Rory Glaves (NLL), Todd Richard (NLL), Derek Suddons (NLL), Jason Clark (NLL), Josh Wasson (NLL) and Matt Holman (NLL).

athletic facilities The University of Hartford honored the long-time commitment of Tom and Suzy Reich to the University’s Department of Athletics by naming the western portion of the Sports Center complex, “The Reich Family Pavilion.” The dedication ceremony was held in April 2004. The Pavilion was dedicated to the memory of Barbara J. Reich. “Tom and Suzy have a wonderful track record of making a difference in the lives of our young people,” said University President Walter Harrison. In addition to a $2 million lead gift to the University’s “Home Field Advantage” Campaign (which supported the construction of the outdoor athletics complex), the Reich family’s record of giving has included money for scholarships, grants, and annual support to various programs in the Department of Athletics. The Reich Family Athletics Development Fund, established in memory of Tom’s late wife, Barbara, provides student-athletes from the University’s less highly profiled teams with scholarships. This past year, six student-athletes benefited from the Reich’s generosity. “Tom and Suzy also give in ways that can’t be measured financially - through their time, leadership, personal energy and support. They are our biggest fans,” said Director of Athletics Patricia H. Meiser.

Included in the Reich Family Pavilion is the 3,508-seat Chase Arena, home to the University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams. With the opening, the University of Hartford reached a milestone: the ability to provide a comprehensive athletics complex that not only showcases the University’s intercollegiate programs but also provides resources for the entire campus community. The Sports Center encompasses 130,000 square feet of space and provides a home for intercollegiate and intramural athletics, fitness and health-related activities, and recreation and socializing for students, faculty, staff, and alumni. About 5,000 individuals alone use the Sports Center for wellness alternatives. The Sports Center features an indoor swimming pool; courts for volleyball, badminton, squash, and racquetball; two multipurpose rooms for intramural and recreational use, and two fitness and weight rooms. Six lighted tennis courts and an outdoor swimming pool are located behind the Sports Center, adjacent to the new outdoor athletics facility.
and draw an estimated 100,000 people to the campus. Most recently, the Sports Center hosted a democratic rally in support of gubernatorial candidate Dan Malloy, which included a visit from former president Bill Clinton. Located directly behind the Sports Center is a newly constructed outdoor athletics facility, which houses Al-Marzook Field (soccer, lacrosse) and the campus baseball and softball field. All three fields are turf surfaces, while an all-grass recreation field has also been constructed and can be used for team practices as well as intramural and recreation activities.
The Sports Center also offers such amenities as a pro shop, meeting rooms, concession areas, saunas, locker rooms, and a study hall for student-athletes. A newly constructed women’s basketball suite was completed in the fall of 2008. Included is a state of the art lockerroom, a lounge and a multimedia room for the team to breakdown video. The multimedia room also serves as the media room for postgame press conferences. The facility serves the community throughout the year by hosting numerous regional and national activities, including trade shows, high school graduations, dinners, and many other outside athletics events. Some 25 external events take place each year

The philosophy we endorse as part of the Hartford Hawks strength and conditioning program is quite simple. We are seeking the best gains, in the least amount of time, in the safest way possible. All training sessions are supervised by the strength and conditioning staff to augment results and reduce any chance for injury. We endorse a variety of modalities, and forms of training, and are constantly looking to improve the program to make it more efficient. As a student-athlete your time will be limited due to class schedule, practice time, travel, homework, eating, sleeping, and hopefully some form of a social life.

of hartford conditioning The voluntary training cards provided are basic routines that follow similar protocols you will experience on campus. However, we have simplified them to meet the equipment you most likely will have available to utilize during the summer training period. When you come to campus you will be exposed to the full effects and direction of the strength and conditioning program. All student-athletes at the University of Hartford will experience mental, and physical, challenges that will push them well beyond what each individual thought was possible. Ultimately, the student-athlete is responsible for their success or failure. We as coaches are here to provide a training plan, and guide you.
Following the rules behind the strength and conditioning program will help you achieve the top five reasons for training. The training methods we endorse may be unorthodox, but they will assure we are both overloading and being progressive with all training protocols. The strength and conditioning routines at the University of Hartford are brief and intense out of necessity. Once again, our goal remains to maximize training in the least amount of time. Make the commitment to your team. Have laser-focus on goals. Get locked in. This unrelenting approach will make the difference in all phases of training.
