Hartford Seminary was also among the first American institutions to give serious attention to the study of Islam and to forming connections to the Muslim world as early as 1893. Over the past century, Hartford Seminary has maintained its pivotal role in building bridges of mutual respect and cooperation between Muslims and Christians through the promotion of peace, dialogue and learning. In 1973, Hartford Seminary established the Macdonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations. In 2001, Hartford Seminary continued its pioneering efforts by developing the first and only formally accredited Islamic Chaplaincy Program in the nation. Today, our chaplains may be found in major institutions throughout the country providing essential spiritual support and counsel, serving their communities and authentically representing their faith as Muslims. The 72-credit Islamic Chaplaincy Program combines the Master of Arts in Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations and a Graduate Certificate Program in Islamic Chaplaincy. Students enroll in the 48-credit Master of Arts, which includes courses in the disciplines of Islamic religious thought and practice, historical and contemporary perspectives on Islamic societies, and theological and social interactions between Islam and Christianity. z
Further knowledge and pastoral skills essential to chaplaincy are acquired in the 24-credit Graduate Certificate in Islamic Chaplaincy. Through courses in pastoral care, practices of ministry, and dialogue and interfaith relations, along with supervised field education and Clinical Pastoral Education, graduates are fully prepared to work effectively in a wide range of chaplaincy settings. z
