Ara Design Ltd. is an interior design firm specialising in the design of restaurants and boutiques. Recently I have worked as a draughtsman, creating plan drawings along with 3d renders for clients. In 2009 I designed the website www.aradesign.eu, this was a new experience for me and a skill that I self taught.
Emily Readett-Bayley Ltd. Over the years I have helped Emily Readett-Bayley Ltd. with many things, ranging from sales to helping with stand design at trade shows, such as the Royal Chelsea Flower show. More recently I have undertaken graphic design work, including creating adverts for publications and web.

EXPERIENCE
Curiosity (April 2014 - August 2014)
Yamaha Design / Keechdesign
For the main part of my internship I worked in Tokyo for the renowned interior and product designer Gweaneal Nicolas’ consultancy, Curiosity. Working closely with the head of product design I worked on projects for global brands such as Louis Vuitton, Graff Diamonds, Kanebo Cosmetics as well as lighting and furniture for design exhibitions like Milan Salone. In addition to this I worked individually on initial design concepts to pitch to Gwenael Nicolas for the famous furniture company Cassina.
I participated and was a finalist in the Yamaha summer design camp, a competition set up for students and run by Yamaha Design London and Keechdesign.
FW Design (March 2014 - April 2014) As part of my internship I spent 4 weeks with a wayfinding consultancy, FW Design in London. FW Design is a strategic way finding consultancy that creates map based signs for pedestrians within cities. During this time I worked on signage projects for local councils, specifically I helped with creating illustrator artwork, creating 3d buildings and location planning for projects such as Preston and South Dublin County Council. Out of the office I produced initial design sketches and concepts for one of their new projects and pitched to one of the directors.
SHIN AZUMI / A Studio Before university I had a brief week placement at A Studio, Shin Azumi’s design firm. It taught me the tolerances and work ethic expected at a professional product design studio. I helped with model making a prototype for a client, with my model making consequently improving greatly.
IN Racing Debating whether to pursue a career in Automotive Design, I decided to try and gain some work experience within the field. IN Racing is a company that races vintage Formula 1 cars at events such as Goodwood Revival.
MCA Architect Office Nottingham During my 2 week placement at MCA I learnt to use Sketch Up and helped with AutoCad, with some of my work being presented to clients.

SHIROSHI Exploring the beauty of light and recreating it by using water to create movement and flow, referencing the way the Japanese have traditionally handled it Shortlisted for the designboom ‘Happy LED Life!’ international design competition and to be exhibited at the Gwangju International Design Biennale 2015. Competition currently in progress.
Initially I explored the historic concepts of Japanese design and whether they are still relevant today, examining the work of designers such as Tadao Ando and Shiro Kuramata. I wrote a dissertation on Wabi Sabi in modern design
Inspired by the way the Japanese have historically handled light, Shiroshi is an exploration into the ephemeral beauty of light by looking at the qualities of movement. Interested in the quality of light, as much as the form, it mimics the ebb and flow of natural light by refracting light through water and lenses
Inside the light there are LED’s connected to a computer chip which makes the light flicker and flow like natural light. After this the light travels through a two compartment water chamber, creating movement within the water, producing an effect where light now has movement, contrasting the overly quantitative, static modern artificial light, which lacks the tempo, wavelength, nuance and tone of beautiful natural light

Meal Space are small hubs located around Seoul, where Koreans can go to, cook, eat and socialise, using Philips kitchenware. by
We created a location plan, as well as designing the service, creating a website and an app
Why South Korea? Utilising the South Korean members of our group, we decided to concentrate on this part of Asia, and in particular South Korea. Through the use of first hand research, we believed we could give Philips a fresh and authentic insight into this growing market
Meal Space booked for evening event. 6 people will be attending Joo-Wons birthday at meal space ‘Yeouido Park - Han River ’. Event details entered by webpage.

THE BIG SHAVE Create a shaver for the 16-24 year old market. A live group project set by Philips
Main insights from first hand research Many first razors and shavers are bought by mothers for their sons, with the father-son relationship less important The first shave is no longer such a big moment in a teens life, with shaving often learned online First time shavers do not need the full features of a shaver

SOMETHING LIKE A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT
Design ‘something like a musical instrument’
Finalist for the Yamaha and Keech Design student summer design competition
Following on from the event “Something Like a Musical Instrument”, where musicians, artists, thinkers, writers and designers, such as Sebastian Conran and James Johnson, were invited to select an object that was special to them. It could be a thing of beauty, or an everyday object, something they treasured for many years, or a particularly useful tool. Or simply something fascinating. There were no strict rules only that it should be ‘Something Like A Musical Instrument’.
The way in which everyone interprets music is different and I wanted to create a beautiful object where the ‘instrument’ could be played at random, with intrigue and mystery
I looked at the ancient Japanese water garden and objects like the Suikinkitsu, where water droplets fall to create beautiful random sounds, with a sense of mystery, but without the usual control of a musical intrument
Small metal ball bearings are filled into the top compartment, and fall through the centre hole After this they fall into the next compartment, where there are 5 new holes Each of these lead to the glockenspiel bars arranged below, in F pentatonic scale, producing a random and melodic sound
INTERNSHIPS & REFERENCES Internships in London and Tokyo I wanted to get a broad experience within the field of design so tried to get very varied interships.

FW DESIGN A 4 week internship at a wayfinding consultancy in London Working at FW Design I gained experience working on projects for county councils, learning about not only product design, but also graphic design and user experience. Here I greatly honed my Illustrator and other Adobe skills.

CURIOSIT Y Summer internship in Tokyo at GwenaÍl Nicolas’ multi-disclipinary studio Working in Japan shaped me as a designer, allowing me to observe and learn from another culture as well as inspiring me to want to understand Japanese design. I worked with model makers, interior designers and product designers, creating models, research and development, sketchwork and using software such as Rhino and Keyshot.
“
Haruki shows a strong interest in and is motivated by creating new concepts, with a good understanding of the shape and structure of the three dimensional objects. More than anything he looked like he enjoyed working at Curiosity and he brought this enthusiasm to the team. He was not only interested in product design, but also in art, interior design and architecture and had a large appetite to learn and absorb new knowledge. Gwenaël Nicolas and I, and also the staff at Curiosity, hope and expect you to do well in the future and I look forward to seeing the work you are involved in.
