Many Houses with One Home

We hail from all parts of the globe, but we will always come from the same home. The Harvard community is the greatest network in the world, and the Harvard Club of Boston is the one place where you can build or expand your Harvard community, reconnect with classmates, engage in lifelong learning, stay informed of Harvard news, and most importantly have a home that you can call your own.

You may no longer be a student, but the Harvard Club of Boston will always be here for you. We are your community. We are your family. We are your home.

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear Fellow Members,

On Tuesday March 28, the Harvard Club of Boston made history. The names of Harvard University alumni who have served as Presidents of the United States, Vice Presidents of the United States, United States Senators, Supreme Court Justices and Massachusetts Governors and were born in Massachusetts or have spent the majority of their careers in the Commonwealth are inscribed on the walls of the Massachusetts Room. Based upon these criteria for inscription, a woman had yet to be eligible in the 115-year history of the HCB. With the election of Governor Healey, ’92, we are pleased that the Governor met the criteria for having her name inscribed in the Massachusetts Room. This is a milestone in the history of the Commonwealth and the Harvard Club of Boston, and it is a proud moment for Governor Healey and our Club.

Governor Healey was joined by family, friends, along with young people from the City of Boston and Club leadership for a joyful and moving ceremony. Many thanks to Governor Healey for participating in a fireside chat with our members in Harvard Hall led by Andy Freed, ’90, ks’94, a member of our Board of Governors. Kudos to Andy for leading an engaging and enlightening discussion. Also, kudos to the Harvard University Band for adding to the fun and celebration of the evening’s festivities. Oh, what a night!!

The Annual Meeting will be held on Monday, April 24 at 5:30 PM. Eligible members may vote for the slate of nominees through proxy ballots starting on Monday, April 3. At 6:00 PM our Harvard Celebration of Spring begins. Spring is the time of year that reminds us of the anticipation of commencement in May. We here at the HCB look forward to this time of year as we focus on welcoming new alumni into our Club community. It’s a time when we look to strengthen our connection to fellow alums through reunions and Alumni Day in June. This is done through the relationship of what is the outstanding network of the Harvard community and the Harvard Club of Boston. We are connected through education and engagement of Harvard. This year will feature a conversation between Harvard Alumni Association (HAA) President Allyson Mendenhall ’91, MLA’99 and Sara Karmon the recently appointed Executive Director of the HAA. This will be an opportunity to hear about current and future plans and how the HAA and HCB work together to foster alumni engagement. It will be an evening of fellowship within the Harvard Club of Boston and Harvard community, the greatest network in the world.

Elections for Harvard University Overseers and HAA Elected Directors began on March 31 and will end May 16. I am pleased to note that the following HCB members are candidates for Overseer: Jeffrey D. Dunn A.B. ’77, M.B.A. ’81 and Vanessa W. Liu A.B. ’96, J.D. ’03. The following member is running for elected director: Anirudh Suri M.P.A. ’14, B.A. ’06, Haverford College; M.B.A. ’12, University of Pennsylvania. To learn more about these three outstanding candidates and the Harvard elections visit their website and please remember to vote

There are two days in April which are notable. The first is One Boston Day. One Boston Day recognizes the resiliency, generosity, and strength demonstrated by the people of Boston and those around the world in response to the tragedy of April 15, 2013. Ten years later, the City of Boston invites communitybased organizations, businesses, City workers, and residents to come together for volunteer events and acts of kindness in recognition of our city’s spirit of care for one another in response to the tragic events of April 15, 2013. The second day is the 53rd Earth Day, which is Saturday, April 22. You can learn more about Harvard’s Earth Day events here.

We were fortunate to have two signature events in the month of March, the “Fireside Chat with Governor Healey” and “An Insider’s Look at The World’s Biggest Art Heist.” None of these and other events happen without the hard work of the Member Experience Committee, Co-Chaired by Andy Freed and Jan Saragoni ‘89, and the Member Experience Staff, led by Becky Blaeser ’98 along with the entire HCB team led by our General Manager Steve Cummings. Steve has and continues to encourage teamwork as the pillar of providing superb service to our members. Bravo to all involved for initiating and executing a variety of events supported by quality hospitality services, that engage our members and provide an outstanding member experience. The best is yet to come.

Many thanks to all of you for choosing to be members of our beloved Club. Your loyalty and support make us thrive as a community, onward together. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact me directly via president@harvardclub.com

Best regards,

Marcus O. P. DeFlorimonte gb ’95, pmd President, Harvard Club of Boston Go Crimson!
