RECONSTRUCT THE VILLA SAVOYE THE SPATIAL POSSIBILITY OF THE PLAN 2020 Self Design This project will entail the design of the Villa Savoye for a new residential building. Residences as a typology are made up of a variety of programmatic parts. And the residence then are also a way in which to study living space form at a smaller scale that is untenable at the larger city-wide scale. As a translation from plan to section and a projection from XY plane to vertical relationship, the design considers as a mixture of a few tiny residence prototypes which were produced and deconstructed by the original plan of the Villa Savoye.

In the traditional residential building plan, the circulation is restricted to the XY plane.

The circulation between each floor is placed into the core. This makes the space easy to organize, but tedious.

Now, there are a lot of architects in the design to try to talk about floor segmentation that is different from the previous slicing. They are more concerned with the complexity of the floors' height.

The Villa Savoye, as one of the representative peojects in modern architecture, has an innovative architectural plane design - free plane.

If we convert its plane to section, we can see more possibilities of building section - free plane to free section conversion.

When we transform its all floors plan into section, we will make more complex and interesting changes in the interwoven space by means of assembly and splicing.

Villa Savoye is a modernist villa in Poissy, on the outskirts of Paris, France. It was designed by the Swiss architects Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret, and built between 1928 and 1931 using reinforced concrete. As an exemplar of Le Corbusier's "five points" for new constructions, the villa is representative of the origins of modern architecture and is one of the most easily recognizable and renowned examples of the International style.

I rotated and extruded the three floors of the Villa Savoye. Then they were assembled from different angles and Boolean algorithm was also used to create different spatial forms.

In the layout of the plane, I tried to follow the functions contained in the original work, and at the same time show more interesting geometric space. It can be seen from the renderings that many plane relations of the Villa Savoye are still retained in the section of the design, but they are easier to be perceived visually than the original work.

WHITE ARCH --- TALK TO THE COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL DESIGN UoL 2nd year stuidio, spring 2019/20 Self Design Site: 2 Berkely ST, Liverpool, UK A city or region usually has its iconic artificial buildings, which reflect the charm and characteristics of the city or region. Such artificial buildings are called "landmarks ". Similarly, the communities where the landmarks are located will bring economic, social and other effects due to the communities. But the project is the theme to design a music school and the dormitory, if this kind of building want to be a landmark of a community, must make its have certain ‘public’, let the common people, in addition of the students and teachers, who have a excellent chance to appreciate the building from within, experience the rich functional building, not just only stand looking at building in the distance of the building’s outlook.

Program Analysis

The music school was mainly divided into 3 main parts, the main auditorium(for public), the staff offices and teaching rooms with different size(private), the public area(Ground Floor) and the private area(Second Floor) are separated by the lounge(First Floor), which can better distinguish the founctionality of each layer.

STRUCTURAL STRATEGY 1. There is a large double-height atrium in the building, and the second floor occupies more space than the first floor. Therefore, I added a lot of arch columns as supporting columns, which can also beautify the building. 2.Due to the problem of zone division, the second floor of the building can absorb little natural light, so I choose to use double skin structure to solve this problem. Increase the privacy of the classroom and office while increasing the absorb of natural light. In the standard of building lighting, the requirement of office building lighting is relatively high. Although there are many kinds of modern lighting appliances, natural light source still plays an irreplaceable role in lighting. In order to obtain more natural light, it is necessary to increase the area of the glass skin, but this is only effective for the local area near the glass skin. While the double skin can make full use of the natural light and prevent the glare caused by direct sunlight, which provides a good indoor light environment for office buildings. In the same way, the double skin can also reduce indoor thermal radiation to a certain extent.

MESHED CITY PARAMETRIC URBAN DESIGN 2020 Self Design In this project, depending on the study of the site near the Beijing CBD, a 'mixed city' prototype has been created. Due to the rapid development of the city, a series of problems emerge. We studied these problems, such as urban structure, road system, topology and rainwater collection systems, program distribution, neighborhood relations and so on.

HIGH DENSITY

MIDDLE DENSITY

LOW DENSITY

Depending on the research of two dimensional Cellular Automata, Several special experiment result of four types have been selected to suit for four specific programs (residential, hotel, office, commercial ). At tthe same time, four types’ characteristic also suitable for four differen densities ( low, mid, high, and extremely high). Finally, the prototype matrix has been etablished by these two factors. After we finished the prototype study, the mixture experiment was started. In the same scale of the base grid, the two CA were mixed. We examed and recorded the variation of mixture of ratio.

EXTREMELY HIGH DENSITY

Cellular automata provide simple discrete deterministic mathematical models for physical biological and computational system. Dspite their simple construction, cellular automata are shown to be capable of complicated behaviour, and to generate complex patterns with universal features.

Although we got the density distribution of potential program, there is lack of an urban structure to organize these urban element. So we converted the data to dot matrix and weight values. Then we use these points to influence the urban structure which is homogeneous grid.

After the completion of mass generation, some blocks have been left. Firstly, center points of these blocks have been connected by proximity lines. Under the logic of” shortest walk”, the road system has been generated. Actually all traffic nodes have been chosen as entrance points and exit points. Then the distance from one to any other one has been calculated. The shortest one is the better path at last. The simulation analysis of traffic field and traffic nodes have been completed.

ThePrinciples of generating topography is to keep building and people in the highest place. Thus, it has positive significance for the construction of water collection system and waterp roof.but also smooth flow of traffic. After the completion of the reconstruction of the terrain, we made a simulation of rainwater flow and traffic fi eld, and ultimately determine the parts of the area for rainwater collection. These regions will be made as part of an underground building space, such as public theater, plaza or resting area. So even there is no rain, these places also can be used as functional space.

DREAM • LIGHT CREATING 'DREAMS' WITH LIGHT 2020 Self Design What would it be like if the scene from the dream were to appear in real life? This project will analyse the creating techniques used in the film 'Inception' and experiment with different shades of light to create a dream world.

Most buildings are vertical to the ground.

Just imagine what the abandoned buildings At the same time, various vertical structures will look like in hundreds of years... in the interior will change accordingly.

Inception is a 2010 science fiction action film written and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film is the first in Nolan's timespace series, and he boldly USES dreams and time to create an iconoclastic film for audiences. In Inception, Nolan wanted to explore "the idea of people sharing a dream pace... That gives you the ability to access somebody's unconscious mind. What would that be used and abused for?" The majority of the film's plot takes place in these interconnected dream worlds. This structure creates a framework where actions in the real or dream worlds ripple across others. The dream is always in a state of production, and shifts across the levels as the characters navigate it.

In many scenes of the movie, light is also an effective way to create 'dreams'. Reasonable use of light, can build different atmosphere for the space, such as melancholy, happy, serious and so on.

Forest of Ligh / Sou Fujimoto Architects / Italy / 2016

Maybe it will looks like this...

If add two mirrors in the both side of the structures...

The object will be endlessly repeated in the mirror.

The 'Silence' room is lit in cool tones of light to reflect a sense of coolness and tranquillity. This is contrasted with the warm tones lights of the surrounding spaces to create a sense of isolation from the outside world.

Room 'Silence'/ 静

Room 'Slant' / 天 • 地 Section

The interior of Room 'Slant' is filled with large inclined steel columns. As a link between the first and first floors, these unconventional sloping steel columns and the mirror-covered ceiling not only create a sense of mystery for visitors, but also link well with the upper floors.

The building is largely made of steel and concrete, and the lighting is used to adjust the atmosphere in each area, thus creating different ’dreams‘.

Room 'Sun & Moon'/ 日月同辉

Room 'Slant' / 天 • 地

Room 'Endless'/ 幻

Room 'Vision'/ 视 • 界
