VIRTUAL RETREAT PROGRAM

ROOT & BLOOM a (re) generative retreat for new mexico’s creatives Dear Beloved Artists, Creatives & Agents of Change, Dear Beloved Friends, Families, Neighbors & Collaborators ~ Welcome, and thank you for being (here). We don’t yet know who you are, exactly, but we do know that you deserve nourishment. We understand that you may feel as galvanized as you do devastated, that you may be carrying wounds as deep as y/our medicines are in/finite. And we acknowledge that – for as much as inspires you alight, in life and in creation – there are myriad forces with vested interest in burning you out. But the world simply cannot afford that loss. We need you and all of your brilliance. Root & Bloom was inspired and formed with you in mind, heart, and spirit, by and for your fellow New Mexico Creatives. It took years to plant and cultivate, with a multitude of gardeners. At every turn, we’ve been reinforced in the beauties of the universe and each of her souls. The intuitive and healing wisdoms of ancestors, elders, and womxn; fierce devotion to arts activism and social justice; our community partners’ shared vision and generosity; and magic and synchronicity all played equivalent roles in making this offering to you. We are grateful to you for all that you are and for all that you root and bloom in the world, just by virtue of your very being. We hope you will allow us and our retreat co-creators the honor of supporting you through Root & Bloom. We look forward to spending time with you, exactly as you are, already more than enough, and however you are able to show up. With light and love, in healing and solidarity, Dani Belvin & Julia Mandeville

Co-Curators, Root & Bloom Cooperative Leadership Team, Harwood Art Center

ROOT & BLOOM a (re) generative retreat for new mexico’s creatives LANDS, PEOPLES & LIVES ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

As one step towards honoring truth, nurturing healing, facilitating reparation, and achieving reconciliation, Harwood Art Center and Root & Bloom offer our acknowledgments and commitments. We are on Tiwa Land. These are the traditional Native homelands of 23 Indian Tribes, 19 Pueblos, 3 Apache Tribes, and the Navajo Nation, lands called New Mexico. We recognize that these lands represent wealth of many kinds, wealth conferred on its thieves and occupiers, and that violent repercussions linger for the Indigenous peoples from whom it was taken. We recognize the devastating impacts colonization, patriarchy, bigotry, racism, and white supremacy have on lives and livelihoods every day, with atrociously disproportionate violence afflicting people who are BIPOC, LQBTQIA, and/or womxn. With humility and consciousness of our shared history, we understand that such acknowledgment statements are truly meaningful only when coupled with authentic relationships and sustained dedication. We therefore remain committed beyond words – to actions, platforms, and programs – that support the rights of people who are BIPOC, LGBTQIA, and/or womxn. We center and resource diversely representative creative voices to share and shape their own stories, and to support community in sharing and shaping their own realities. We reinforce our dedication to learning, expression, and amplification, as we recognize they offer the most resilient pathways to global citizenship, justice, and peace. We are grateful to Honor Native Lands, U.S. Department of Arts & Culture, and New Mexico Montessori Network for your frameworks for and frames of reference on acknowledging our lands and her original peoples.

Keynote Dialogue Session Cultivating Peace Within Creativity

Zenju Earthlyn Manuel, born to parents who migrated from rural Louisiana at the start of WWII, has walked through many different doors spiritually and academically. She has a PhD; she’s a Zen Roshi; and she’s also a poet and author. Essentially, she’s a Seer in which she has woven herself into various frameworks to ultimately bring forth her visionary work. Zenju has embraced the active role of Seer, in watching for obstacles to awareness, despite the loss of such a role in the American culture. Her transmissions come through her books including, The Deepest Peace: Contemplations from a Season of Stillness, Sanctuary: A Meditation on Home, Homelessness, and Belonging, The Way of Tenderness: Awakening through Race, Sexuality, and Gender, and Black Angel Cards: 36 Oracles and Messages for Divining Your Life, her first visionary experience. Zenju also teaches from her experience of African and Native American Indigenous ceremony and her own awakening on the intersection of spirituality and systemic oppression. Learn more about Zenju at zenju.org

Unique currently leads program development for World Trust Educational Services, a racial equity organization that uses film, dialogue, and transformative education models to expand the capacity for individuals and organizations to create a world free from racism. Unique’s work as a collaborating artist and director has been performed and exhibited in the U.S. and internationally. This work is part of a long-term artistic and social engagement in conversations on equity, both in the arts and beyond. Keynote Dialogue // Albuquerque Dreaming: Knowledge, Relationship & Insights from Creation, Native & Indigenous Visions for New Realities Nani Chacon has more than twenty years of experience painting in public spaces. Early on, she began as a graffiti artist, learning and growing from the challenges the medium presented. Chacon worked to develop her technical skills as a large-scale painter, excelling in scale, color, design, composition and style. The experience also taught her about the public connection to art, marginalization in a public space, and how to reclaim space through community-based art. Chacon received a Bachelor of Arts in education, and has always felt that the importance of developing a skill and practice was to one day be able to share that knowledge with others. Chacon’s site-specific public art projects are community focused in that she directly collaborates and engages with the people from the community in which the work will be placed. Through conversations and research, her work reflects the landscape and people of that space. Chacon’s murals often address Indigenous thought, aesthetics, and identity, and, in effect, offer visibility to and empower Indigenous people. She places deep value in creating artworks that are accessible and offer the viewer a space in which they might contemplate important cultural and political connotations as they relate to the place in which the work is exhibited. Learn more about Nani at nanichacon.com Lynnette Haozous is Chiricahua Apache (of the San Carlos Apache Tribe), Diné, and Taos Pueblo. Haozous is a multi-medium artist, advocate and teacher, blending art and advocacy to bring attention to the current social conditions and injustices of Indigenous People. Mediums include acrylics, watercolors, and spray paint. Haozous received her Bachelors of Social Work degree in 2016 from New Mexico Highlands University and often blends her social work and art through teaching art at OffCenter Community Arts Project, and at Working Classroom Inc., both in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Haozous has received artist residencies through SWAIA, Nativo Lodge, Ute Mountain A.I.R., and more recently completed a residency at Santa Fe Art Institute for their “Truth & Reconciliation” Artist Residency in 2018. Haozous’ mural works can be found at Nativo Lodge Room 519, Hotel Chaco, OT Circus Gallery and Emerson Elementary School, all in Albuquerque, NM.
